Lucky Dawg Continues Its Mission, Seeks Pet Fosters By Francine Fulton

Now in its second year of operation, Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue Inc. is continuing its mission to rescue homeless, abused or unwanted dogs and cats and find them permanent, loving homes. The nonprofit, no-kill, all-volunteer organization was founded on Jan. 1, 2018. “Last year, 100 dogs were adopted and 70-plus cats,” reported Mary Bauer, founder. “This year, we have surpassed those numbers already. We are at 150 for dogs and we are still tallying the cats, but we passed that (number) as well.” The rescue has also developed a relationship with the Coatesville Veterans

Affairs (VA) Medical Center. This past spring, the rescue was able to help homeless Vietnam veteran David Tillman provide care for his dog, Dakota, until the pair could be reunited. A foster family housed Dakota for several months while Tillman attended a program at the VA. Tillman and Dakota are now doing well and residing at the Whitehall Apartments in Spring City, a facility that provides permanent supportive housing for at-risk veterans in Chester County. Lucky Dawg will collect items such snacks and gift cards for veterans at its upcoming holiday craft show on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Freedom Village Brandywine,

Theater To Stage Play Inside Greystone Hall

By Francine Fulton

Just outside Exton at Boot Road Park in West Whiteland Township, visitors will be able to view a fun, educational Outdoor Science Center that features informational signs and a giant periodic table of elements. The display was created by Matthew Dakin, a member of Boy Scout Troop 21 and a township resident, as part of his Eagle Scout service project. Acquiring the rank of Eagle is the highest honor in Boy Scouting. Matt first had to receive approval from township administration and the board of supervisors before beginning the project. “When I was going through ideas of what to do, I really wanted to do something original,” he said. “I was brainstorming, and (the idea) came to

Greystone Hall in West Chester saw the show and said (to the playwright), ‘I have a Greystone in West Chester, Pa.,’” Barrett said, explaining how the show came to Chester County. “The playwright came out to visit three years ago and Velda looked around for some community theaters (to stage the play). We had a meeting, and we joined together to put (on) the show.” During the play, audience members will begin their theater experience in the Great Hall and then move to various rooms in the mansion. Each scene will be staged three times, and the audiences will rotate so that everyone sees the whole play, but in a different order. There will be a 15-minute intermission between Acts I and II when snacks and light refreshments will be served. Barrett said that staging a play inside a building is both fun and challenging. Currently the actors are rehearsing every Sunday at the location for “blocking,” which is determining the spot where they stand while saying their lines. “One of the really cool things is

Lucky Dawg from pg 1 15 Freedom Blvd., Coatesville. “We are always trying to help (veterans) when we can,” Bauer said. “Without having fosters in place, it’s really hard. At this point, we are helping them with

that we aren’t using a set. But that is a challenge, too, because you are pretty much doing theater in the round because the audience sits where they want,” Barrett said. “We put out a couple extra chairs in the rooms, and we encourage the audience to sit anywhere. So an actor may have the spot blocked, but when he gets there, an audience member might be sitting there. The play is not interactive, but you might see an actor sitting right next to an audience member to do their scene.”

Barrett encourages local residents to view the show, which is only performed at the two venues. “(Local residents) will only see it here,” she said. Tickets for “The Manor” should be purchased in advance at www.colonialplayhouse .net/the-manor-info. definitely need fosters,” said Bauer. “We have a lot of requests locally because of owner surrenders (due to) different situations. We need fosters locally.” In addition, Lucky Dawg has cats and dogs ready for adoption. One dog in need of a home is 3-year-old Cinnamon, a female pit bull terrier mix. “She was found as a stray in Chester and taken in by The Spay Club, who contacted us,” Bauer explained. “She basically knew nothing; she is a blank slate. She is going through an obedience program right now and is wonderful. She knows many commands. She likes other dogs and would make a great dog for anybody.” The organization is still seeking a permanent home for a special needs dog named Albert. Because his back legs are paralyzed, he uses a doggie wheelchair, also known as a wheelie cart. Albert, who is possibly a Labrador/hound mix, is currently being fostered by Bauer, with help from volunteers.

Additionally, some cats rescued by the organization but not in foster care can be adopted from Pet Valu stores, including the ones at 144 Eagleview Blvd. in Lionville and 408 Commons Drive in Parkesburg. In addition to fostering, other volunteer opportunities with Lucky Dawg include providing transportation from partner shelters to foster homes, known as “the freedom ride”; providing transportation to and from veterinarian appointments; assisting at meet-and-greet events; and volunteering as a kitten/cat cuddler at the PetValu locations. Bauer said she is very pleased with the success of the organization so far. “We are so busy,” she stated. “It is great, and I can’t be thankful enough.” For more information about the rescue, including how to foster, volunteer or adopt, readers may email LuckyDawgAR@gmail.com, visit www.luckydawganimal rescue.com or search for “Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue” on Facebook.

The play is staged annually in Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, where the story upon which it is based actually took place. “They have been doing this (play) in California for 20-plus years. The woman who wrote it starred in it,” explained Barrett. “(Bates) used the original house, which is now a big tourist attraction. She wrote the play so that the audience moves from room to room to see the story.” This will be the third year that Colonial Playhouse actors have staged the show in West Chester. Chester County actors in the play include Greg Speca from Downingtown, who plays Greg, and Loren Delaney from West Chester, who plays Ellie. “Velda Moog, the owner of

conserving open space and protecting soil and water resources. Investing in a large system allowed both Longwood and Marlborough Mushrooms to stabilize their costs, and it aligns with their commitment to caring for the land. Engineer Mark Connolly gave tours along with staff members at Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, a farming, gardening and handcrafting community that includes adults with developmental disabilities. The community’s solar system powers several of its buildings, including a Community Health Center, a bakery and a café, and it charges the community’s electric vehicle. Another open house venue that generated the most curiosity was in northern Chester County at the home of Elizabeth Failor. She wowed visitors with her battery-charged robotic mower, which cuts her 2-acre property with no noise or pollution. The tour covered much of the county with 37 open houses in the greater Tredyffrin, Phoenixville, West Chester, Downingtown, Coatesville and Kennett areas. The local tour was organized under the auspices of the National Solar Tour and Solar United Neighbors. The tour concluded at Downingtown’s Victory Brewing Company with a brewery tour. The County Board of Commissioners joined the end-of-day celebration and awarded the Clean Energy Open House Tour a citation “thank(ing) the volunteers and partners of the Clean Energy Tour who have worked to promote a more sustainable future for Chester County.”

Attendees will learn more about its history and the mission of Green Valleys, visit and tour the historic estate house, and walk through the surrounding arboretum. In 1976, Everett and Grace Rodebaugh placed their home, Welkinweir, under conservation easement to provide permanent protection from development and for the public to enjoy the site’s natural beauty. More than 200 people spent a day learning about energy efficiency and renewable energy options during the Chester County Clean Energy Open House Tour on Oct. 19. Organized by the Sierra Club and endorsed by the Chester County commissioners and other local and state elected officials, the tour showcased the solar, geothermal and electric technologies some county residents are using to reduce monthly energy bills, reduce harmful carbon emissions and enjoy tax credits and cash incentives as they improve their property values. Several municipal facilities were on the tour, including Uwchlan Township. Uwchlan Township used state incentives to install electric vehicle charging stations at its township office. While providing a service to the community, the charging stations generate revenue that will be used to fund other energy and environmental protection activities in the township. Two schools were featured: Hillside Elementary School in Berwyn and the Delaware Valley Friends School (DVFS) in Paoli, both of which utilize solar power. Hosts of both newer and older homes on the tour explained how they were taking steps to reduce their emissions. Hosts explained that some of their reasons for going solar or installing electric or geothermal heat pumps were tied to wanting to be part of a community-wide effort to protect clean air for everyone. Efficient house design was also a main feature of the tour. Several homes were designed with “Passive House” design principles. Rick Davis of Downingtown has a home on 2 acres, and the home is situated to take full advantage of the sun. Part of the design included banking the home into the hillside with a fully day-lit first floor and a second story at the north side grade. Visitors got to enjoy Davis’ extensive gardens and beehives as well. In southern Chester County, participants visited two large installations at Longwood Gardens and Marlborough Mushrooms. One a nonprofit, the other a business, they share a longstanding commitment to

INTERIOR HOUSE PAINTING

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Downingtown/Exton Edition -

Scout from pg 1 more than 250 hours to complete. This included time with township staff members and the installation. The Outdoor Science Center includes three signs. The first, titled “Water in the Environment,” deals with the township’s stormwater management efforts. The second sign, titled “Renewable Energy,” explains how the township would like to use 100% renewable energy by 2050, which includes the use of solar power. The “Water in the Environment” sign is located next to the park’s water basin. “The rain retention basin is being used by the township as its flagship prototype to show other residents how they can be built and maintained,” said Matt’s father, Brian. The third sign is located next to the large periodic table. The periodic table is a chart of chemical elements that are displayed in horizontal rows. Each square on the table gives the element’s symbol and other information. For example, sodium is depicted on the chart as “Na” and helium is

represented by the symbol “He.” The outdoor periodic table that Matt created measures 18 by 9 feet. “Each element is a paver, like the ones you see on a back porch or walkway on the ground,” he said. “We bought the tiles and painted them ourselves. I did about 40 of them, and I got my friends and family to help with the other 70 or so. We used stencils and careful tracing.” The sign located next to the table explains the symbols. “The template explains the letters identifying each element and, in each corner, there is a symbol for the atomic number, which is how many protons are in each element,” Matt noted. He said that creating the periodic table was the most challenging aspect of the project. “The installation of the periodic table took about a week total, and that was all done at the end of summer,” he said. “The hardest part was one part of the installation process. In order to keep the pavers level, we put down a layer of sand. To keep that sand level was extremely difficult.” “We were very grateful for the help from West Whiteland

Craft Show from pg 1 between the rescue and the VA. “Our rescue has helped several veterans and their dogs while they were going through programs at the VA or seeking housing,” said Janet Stone, event organizer. The items collected during the craft show will be used for a holiday party for veterans at the VA. Those who wish to donate to the veterans but cannot attend the craft show are asked to contact Peggy Watson at the Coatesville VA at 610-3847711, ext. 4228, and mention Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue. Offered for sale during the upcoming craft show will be handknit and crocheted items, horseshoe metal art, tote bags, custom-painted signs, Christmas décor, Christmas trees and

stitched blankets. There will also be dog and cat items, including homemade treats. Stone explained that all items at the craft show have been made by the rescue’s supporters and volunteers. “The stuff is all completely handmade by people who have adopted dogs or fostered dogs and people who have skills,” she said. “ We make (nearly) 100% of everything we sell. (The craft show) is an extra-special event because of that (aspect).” Stone noted that the auditorium at Freedom Village will be filled with craft goods for shoppers to choose from. “People tell me (in advance) what they are making, and I organize it and we have tables with similar items,” she said. “We will have 18 tables.

Township,” added Brian. “They assisted with excavation at the site, and they were very supportive throughout the project.” Matt is currently completing his required paperwork and anticipates hosting his Eagle Scout Court of Honor next month at his home church, SS Philip and James Catholic Church in Exton. Matt said that the new Outdoor Science Center would make an ideal outdoor science classroom for teachers and students. “(Students) could spend time looking around, and teachers could explain what each of the symbols mean on the periodic table,” he said. West Whiteland Township officials invite teachers and students, as well as the general public, to check out the Outdoor Science Center. The GPS address for Boot Road Park is 110 W. Boot Road, West Chester. The park also offers a .58-mile walking path, a playground, ball fields and restrooms. The park is open dawn through dusk yearround. The science center is located along the park’s walking path behind the ball fields. “(Its location) encourages people to explore the park more,” Matt added. This year is the biggest event yet.” In addition to the craft sale, there will a silent auction table and an opportunity to win gift items. A local veterinarian will be on hand to answer questions and offer free pet nail clippings from 10 a.m. to noon. “We will also have adoptable cats and kittens on-site,” noted Stone. “We almost always (adopt) cats to (Freedom Village) residents.” The holiday craft show will be held in the fourth-floor auditorium at Freedom Village. Visitors should follow the event parking signs, enter the main entrance at Freedom Village and ask in the lobby for directions to the auditorium. Those who would like to donate handmade goods to be sold at the craft show should contact Stone at ldarhandmade@ gmail.com. Items will be accepted through Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, the chief rabbi of a Jewish community in Uganda known as the Abayudaya, or “People of Judah,” will speak at Beth Israel Congregation in Chester Springs on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. Sizomu is the first native-born black rabbi in sub-Saharan Africa and the first Jewish member of his country’s parliament. Rabbi Jon Cutler from Beth Israel personally spent time with Sizomu and his family in Uganda when Cutler was deployed in Africa with the military. “When I was in the military in 2011, I was stationed in East Africa to be director of religious affairs for the military and for the State Department,” said Cutler. “My job was to go to five African nations and to engage with key religious leaders to support them in developing programs by giving grants and job opportunities for

groups to fight extremist religions. In the process, I met with Catholic bishops, Muslims and various religious leaders and was told about the Jewish community in Uganda.” During the upcoming meetand-greet, Sizomu will speak about his Ugandan village and its 100-year-old history, including how Jews were persecuted in the area. “It was his great-grandfather who founded the Jewish community,” Cutler pointed out. Sizomu will tell the story of how his great-grandfather converted from Christianity to Judaism. He will also share about his own evolution of faith and how the community, which now numbers approximately 2,000 Jews, has grown through the years. Sizomu will also detail his efforts to elevate the Abayudaya and surrounding communities by building a health center that has helped reduce death from Pictured on front: Rabbi malaria by 90%. Gershom Sizomu

Sizomu will also discuss the role music played in the community’s survival and his own personal journey. “They have their own music, which is like Ugandan Jewish music,” Cutler said. “It is fascinating. They put together a CD, and it was up for a Grammy (in 2005). They lost to Paul Simon.” Cutler said that Sizomu visits the United States annually, speaking at various locations throughout the country. It is his first time speaking at Beth Irsael. The event is being sponsored by the Kehillah of Chester County. The talk, which will also include a time for questions and answers, is free and open to the public. On Oct. 19, the residents of Sunrise Senior Living of Exton participated in Windsor Christian Preschool’s Trunk or Treat event. For the event, people decorated their vehicle trunks with different themes so that children could enjoy trick-ortreating from trunk to trunk. This year, Sunrise of Exton chose a “Wizard of Oz” theme in honor of the 80th anniversary of the movie. Residents and team members dressed in costume and reached out to families to get involved by purchasing or sewing costumes themselves. The residents also helped decorate the bus so that each section showcased a different part of the movie. The back of the bus had the Wicked Witch’s feet poking out from under the

Footlight, “Rumpelstiltskin,” the miller’s daughter is portrayed as boasting of her abilities to help bolster her social status. When the prince talks to her about this, he quotes from Proverbs 31, “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies … Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Dunfee also feels that good theater for a young audience should be enjoyable for adults, and he has included some content geared toward them as well. Future productions may include some plays geared toward an older audience. For more information or tickets, readers may contact Dunfee at 717-203-8670. The production will have a human cast, though puppets may occasionally be recruited as cast members. Footlight Theater’s goal is to present content that is consistent with traditional Judeo-Christian ethics. Some plays, such as for Christmas and Easter, will have more intensive Christian content, but non-Christian audience members are welcome. Sheriff Receives State Award no connections to the Pennsylvania Sheriffs’ Association (PSA), despite sharing common goals, Lee said. Welsh, a former PSA president, helped change that, he said, adding that the two organizations now enjoy a collegial relationship that has benefited both sheriffs and deputies throughout the state. During her nearly 20-year tenure as sheriff, Welsh has broken numerous gender barriers. Shortly after being elected in 1999, she was recognized as the first woman to be elected president of a graduating class at the National Sheriffs Institute at the Department of Corrections in Longmont, Colo. In July 2009, Welsh was sworn in as the first female president of the PSA. In January 2011, she was the first female elected to the board of the NSA, which oversees more than 3,000 sheriffs across the nation. She currently serves on the NSA’s executive committee as first vice president, the first woman to hold that post. This year’s DSAP conference was held at the Ramada Hotel by Wyndham in Greensburg. It was hosted by the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office.

Environmental Awards Available Residents of Chester County who have recently worked on successful environmental projects are encouraged to apply for the 2020 Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence, the state’s top environmental honor. Last year, the Valley Creek Restoration Partnership won this award for its work in Valley Forge National Historic Park. The Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence are open to all individuals, whether they led or participated in a project, and to all schools, nonprofit organizations, businesses, farms, and government agencies. People may also nominate individuals or organizations by applying on their behalf. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) oversees the award selection process, evaluating projects on seven criteria: degree of environmental protection, climate change, sustainability, partnership, economic impact, innovation, and environmental education and outreach. Projects do not have to meet all

criteria to merit an award and may be nonprofit or for-profit. Projects must have been completed before Oct. 15 to be eligible. Past winners may submit applications for new projects, but projects that have previously received an Environmental Excellence Award are not eligible. The deadline for application submission is Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 5 p.m. For applications and guidelines, readers may visit www.dep.pa.gov and select Awards under About DEP and then Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence. In 2019, one individual and 17 organizations, businesses, and local governments received awards. Their projects produced environmental workforce training, mobile renewable energy workshops, energy-saving LED light installation, natural gas fueling stations, cleaned-up coastlines, storm water retrofitting videos, conservation farming, creek restorations, and other positive outcomes for Pennsylvania.

Chester County Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh recently continued her string of firsts at the 44th annual Thomas J. McGinley Awards Banquet and Conference in Greensburg. Welsh, recognized as Chester County’s first female sheriff and the first woman to serve on the executive board of the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), became the first sheriff in the state to receive the Thomas J. McGinley Memorial Meritorious Award. It recognizes outstanding and dedicated service to the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of Pennsylvania (DSAP), which holds the conference each year. James Lee, executive director of the DSAP, said he was pleased to see Welsh receive well-deserved recognition. Lee said the award was first presented in 1997, a year after the death of McGinley, who had founded DSAP and had become its first president. Since then, the recipients have all been deputies. Lee said he told Helen McGinley, the founder’s widow, that Welsh would be this year’s recipient and she suggested her late husband would be pleased. In its early years, the DSAP had
