Downingtown Swimmer Named To National Team
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Alexa Fulton, who is a member of the Upper Main Line YMCA (UMLY) swim team program, was recently named to the roster of the 2022-23 Na tional Junior Team by USA Swimming. Only 72 swimmers from across the country were selected for the team.
Alexa, 17, a senior at Downingtown East High School, has been swimming with the UMLY swim program for five years. “I first started swimming (10 years ago) just during the summers because I had a lot of friends who were swimmers,” Alexa said. “Initially, swimming was just a fun way to spend time with my friends, but as I got older, I got more involved and interested in the competi tive aspect.”
The National Junior Team consists of athletes age 18 and under. Members at this year’s class of swimmers are from 61 clubs and from 26 states.
“The four fastest 18-and-under swimmers in each Olympic event (at the YMCA Nationals) are invited to join the National Junior Team,” Alexa explained. “As a member of the National Junior Team, I am invited to attend a training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs with the rest of the Junior Team in April (2023). I will also have the opportunity to represent Team USA internationally this upcoming summer.”
Alexa specializes in sprint freestyle, competing in 50- and 100-meter events. “The 50 is such a fast event, there’s not really much time for think ing. I love just being able to get up on the blocks, turn my brain off and swim as fast as I can,” she said.
Currently, Alexa practices two hours a day, six days a week with the club team at UMLY. “I also do a bit of strength training and dryland (training) two days a week,” she noted.
Alexa said that she enjoys being part of a swim team. “By far, my favorite aspect of swimming is the team elements. While swimming is often thought of as an individual sport, I wouldn’t be where I am without the support of my team mates,” she stated. “I’ve met all my best friends through swimming, and they are the reason I am able to motivate myself to get through practice each day. As fulfilling as personal success can be, it’s nothing compared to succeeding with your teammates. I have always loved competing at YMCA Nationals because of the emphasis put on the team at that meet. The relays are always a highlight and stand out to me as some of my happiest moments in the sport.”
Since 1971, the UMLY swim team has had ath letes go on to represent the country in interna tional competitions, qualify in multiple Olympic Trials and swim competitively for colleges and universities across the nation. To learn more about the program, visit www.ymcagbw.org/UM LYswimteam.
“I am so grateful for all of the opportunities swimming has brought me. I owe so much to my amazing coaches Jamie Krull and Todd Conrad, who have had such a huge impact on my swim ming career,” said Alexa, who will attend Univer sity of Texas next fall. “I also need to thank my family, who has always been so supportive and willing to spend countless hours at swim meets only to watch me swim a 25-second race.”

Seeking The Gift Of Life
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Many theater goers have enjoyed performanc es by AJ Tantala, a cast member with Chester County’s SALT Performing Arts. Now, the 23-yearold is hoping that one of those audience members will consider giving him the gift of life by becom
ing a living kidney donor.
Tantala was born with posterior urethral valve syndrome (PUV). Doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) per formed surgery to remove the valves, but damage was done to his kidneys.
Tantala has posted his
need for a new kidney on the National Kidney Reg istry (NKR) website, where he describes his situation. “This past summer I was to work an internship be fore graduation and it was necessary for me to have a blood test done, and that is when we discovered how poor my kidney function was,” he stated. “Anything below 20% functioning is transplant ready; currently my function is at 11%.”
Getting a new kidney would eliminate the need for Tantala to go on dial ysis. “The goal is to find a living donor before I ever need to go on dialysis. That way the second the doc tors determine it’s time for me, we will go right to the transplant,” he said, noting that his parents are unable to donate because they are medically ineligible.
Tantala recently com pleted his role as Prince Charming in SALT’s produc tion of “Cinderella.” Direct ing the show was Down ingtown resident Sandy Chadwick. “I look at how vibrant and outgoing he is and how much he gives to those around him and can’t imagine him enduring a lifetime of dialysis,” she shared. “We want to do all that we can to help AJ find a kidney from a living donor as that will give him the best possible outcome.”
Tantala’s other roles with SALT include the title role
in “Shrek the Musical” and Quasimodo in “The Hunch back of Notre Dame.” He also appeared in SALT’s “Elf the Musical,” “Matilda the Musical” and “The Secret Garden.”
Although he lives in Bucks County, Tantala said he was willing to make the commute to Chester Coun ty to perform. “I discovered SALT my freshman year of college (at Rider University) when I was looking for a show to do,” he said. “I saw that SALT was doing ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame,’ which is one of my favor ite shows ever, and I audi tioned on a whim at this theater an hour away from my home. I was cast in that
one and many more be cause I can’t bring myself to stop auditioning there.”
Tantala is currently di recting a production of “The Lion King” with one of SALT’s offshoots called Stagelight, which is a per forming arts program geared toward children in kindergarten through eighth grade.
“A kidney from a living donor would be the ulti mate gift to my family and I because it would allow
me to continue pursuing my hopes and dreams,” Tantala stated.
For more information about the kidney dona tion process, visit www. nkr.org. The link to learn more about Tantala can be found at www.facebook. com/neshaminysummer stock in a post dated Oct. 21. Tantala is requesting that people share the link on their social media pag es to broaden the scope of the search for a donor.

For The Love Of Christmas
BY FRANCINE FULTON
For many of us, the holiday season is the best time of the year. Christmas is the celebra tion of the birth of Christ and an opportunity for everyone to exchange gifts, decorate their living spaces, eat great food and spend time with friends and family.
However, the season does have its minor annoyances. While it is fun to decorate the tree, inevitably the light strings become a tangled mess de spite your best efforts to put them away neatly the previ ous year. And, even though you test the lights before you put them on the tree, there is always one light string that does not work, which you al ways find out about after all of the other decorations have been put on. This also hap pens with outdoor displays, especially ones where heights and ladders are involved.
Other not-so-fun aspects of the season include over spending, hard-to-wrap pres ents with odd shapes, gifts that must be put togeth er, radio stations that play
Christmas music too early, Christmas displays at the stores before Halloween, the dreaded ugly sweater party and shop ping in mall crowds. There are also people who are impossible to shop for, and occasionally there’s that awkward moment when someone has bought you a gift, but you did not buy one for them in return.
However, while Christmas brings stresses and challenges, it also is a time for cherished moments like opening presents on Christmas morning, driving through the neighborhood to see the Christmas lights and trekking through the Christmas tree farm to find the perfect tree. During the holiday season, people can donate to local or ganizations in need like Toys for Tots, the Salvation Army and lo cal food cupboards. These oppor tunities bring out people’s sense of generosity and kindness.
Plus, Christmas makes us feel warm and joyful. Christ mas means the smell of fresh evergreens and candles, candy canes, gingerbread men, holly and bright red poinsettias. Lo cal churches have live Nativity displays and schools present
Christmas concerts. There are Christmas cookies to eat, new toys for the kids to play with and, if we’re lucky, a fresh layer of snow to add to the atmosphere.
I remember one Christ mas morning attending Sunday Mass at my church. Rather than preaching a homily, which is a sermon or message, the priest had the congregation sing “Si lent Night” instead. Every one stood up and sang, men and women, young and old, and even those who with not-so-perfect voices who generally remain quiet. It was a poignant Christmas moment. In fact, it made me realize that my least-fa vorite part of the holiday season is not the decorat ing, shopping and gift-giving challenges - the worst part is that it comes to an end.
