Christmas Parade To Usher In The

Holiday Season BY FRANCINE FULTON

After being canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic, the Coatesville Christmas Parade will return to usher in the holiday season on Saturday, Dec. 4, beginning at 10 a.m. The parade will travel on Lincoln Highway (Business Route 30), starting at Strode Avenue and ending at the performance and judging area at 11th Avenue and Lincoln Highway. “We are really excited,” said parade committee member Marianne Bassett, who said the committee was very disappointed to have to cancel the event last year. “It’s great to put a smile on (people’s) faces for one day.” The parade’s grand marshal will a representaive from Brandywine Valley Active Aging (BVAA), formerly known as the Coatesville Senior Center. Returning performers in this year’s parade will include the Lukens Band, the Coatesville Area High School Red Raiders Marching Band, the Reilly Raiders Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps, the Philadelphia Eagles Pep Band and Sixers Stixers from the West Powelton Drummers, which is the official drum line of the Philadelphia 76ers. New this year will be an appearance by Miss Pennsylvania, Meghan Sinisi. Parade attendees can also expect to see elementary, middle and high school groups, along with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, dance academies, cheerleading groups, hip-hop dancers, baton twirlers and cartoon characters. “A lot of fire companies and police bring all their (vehicles),” said Bassett. “The parade is at least two hours long.” She noted that fire companies will not be permitted to hand out candy this year. The parade will end with a special appearance by Santa Claus, who will be riding on a Coatesville Fire Department truck. The parade will include an automotive competition as well as other contests, including Best Appearing Fire Apparatus, Best Appearing Police Vehicle and Best Appearing Float. The all-volunteer parade committee generally raises funds year round by gathering donations and holding fundraisers, but events and sponsoring opportunities were limited this year because of the pandemic. Penn Medicine is the major sponsor of this year’s parade. In the event of inclement weather sion will be made on Thursday, Dec. 2, parade. Cancellations will be listed at parade.com and on the “Coatesville Facebook page.

Santa Claus, riding on a Coatesville Fire Department truck, will be the finale of the Coatesville Christmas Parade.

Chester County Launches Teen Talk Line hours expanded, and the line is now open seven days a week from 3 to 7 p.m. “Our volume is predominantly in text,” reported Kerri Hoogenhuis, assistant director. “Occasionally a teen will reach out by phone, but that is rare.” Teen Talk Line staff members would like to see the number of callers increase. “So many don’t know about it, but there is such a need for teen services,” said Crusemire. “Once they do know, it’s also making sure that it’s not a scary place for them to reach out.” “We just want to let them know that it is a place just to talk - not when you are in

crisis,” said Hoogenhuis. “People hesitate to reach out because they think their problem is not big enough. But they can reach out about anything, even to talk about their day.” “A lot of (the calls and texts) seem to be about friend problems, people at school, problems with parents and feeling lonely or isolated,” Crusemire added. “Some of them just want to vent about (feeling) alone. Some people reach out to say hello.” Calls or texts from teens who are in crisis are referred

to the Valley Creek Crisis Center, which responds to mental health emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Teen Talk Line is contracted through the Chester County Office of Mental Health. The line is staffed by certified peer specialists from Access Services, a nonprofit organization that runs other mental health programs, including a Teen Talk Line in Montgomery County, which also uses teen volunteers to take calls. Hoogenhuis hopes to recruit teen volunteers in

Chester County as well. She is also looking for a host school where student volunteers would take calls after school in a designated area. “We have been contacting the schools, trying to set up appointments and sending out digital flyers,” said Hoogenhuis. “Now that our hours have expanded, we’re hoping to get additional materials - bracelets, clings, stickers and tear pads (that list the Teen Talk Line numbers) - and drop off materials in person and maybe hang up the clings on the bathroom

GivingTuesday To Encourage Generosity

The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is widely referred to as the holiday season. Holidays such as Chanukah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa all take place in this typically six-week window. During this period, there is another, possibly lesser known, event that can elicit many of the same warm feelings generated by more recognizable holidays.

Although my dad was German, I grew up in an Italian household for sure. While my mom did prepare my dad’s favorites like sauerkraut, filled cabbage and borscht, which is red beet soup, our general menu was definitely Italian. There was also a sense of community in our Italian home. There was always something cooking on the stove, whether a pot of chili or meatballs or endive soup, also known as Italian wedding soup. Neighbors, family members and friends stopped frequently to enjoy whatever was cooking. There was always plenty of freshly brewed coffee available day and night. Another tradition is that if someone in the neighborhood, a family member or a fellow church member passed away, casseroles, homemade

Our family still celebrates Christmas Eve, not with five kinds of fish or singing, but with family togetherness. We still tend to speak our minds about money, politics and religion while sharing plates of food, and we all cannot wait for the next holiday or Sunday dinner to get together again.

Of all the holidays, Christmas Eve was the biggest celebration of the year at the home of my grandparents, who were both from northern Italy. And, although they both spoke fluent Italian, they would not let their seven children speak the language in their home. “We are in America, now,” my grandfather would say. As is the Italian-Catholic tradition, we ate five different kinds of fish for dinner that night. I don’t remember all of them, but I do remember smelts, which are very small fish that were breaded and fried. There were also some tuna meatballs, which is using tuna rather than ground beef. They were actually quite tasty when paired with homemade spaghetti. Christmas Eve dinner also

included a lot of singing. The grandchildren were required to stand up and sing Christmas carols, occasionally accompanied by a cousin on guitar. We were not big fans of the public display of talent (or lack thereof), but it made everyone feel happy and festive. My grandfather also joined in, singing in Italian. In addition to holidays, my grandmother made homemade pasta weekly, hanging it to dry on racks in her basement in preparation for Sunday dinner. Even as her sons and daughters grew older and had children of their own, many of them returned on Sundays for spaghetti with homemade sauce. While both Christmas Eve and Sunday dinners included polite conversations and family updates, there were always discussions about money, politics and religion,
