While shopping for books and holiday gifts that are offered at the Second Reading II bookstore, shoppers are asked to bring nonperishable food items for donation to the West Chester Area Senior Center. Donations collected during the food drive, being held through Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020, will be used by the senior center for its 2020 “Weather the Weather” food box program. As part of the program, qualified seniors age 60 and over, including those who are homebound, will receive boxes of food and snacks during the winter months. Distribution of the food boxes will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020. “Many times seniors cannot get out during bad weather,” explained Second Reading II store manager Ann Marie FletcherMoore. “This gives them peace of mind during those days.” Food items needed to fill the boxes include canned soup and vegetables, canned tuna fish, granola bars, crackers, dried fruit, trail mix, fruit cups, cereal and peanut butter. Food items that are expired will not be accepted. Fletcher-Moore noted that the holiday season is also a good time to visit the Second Reading II bookstore. All proceeds from the sale of books, as well as puzzles, games and greeting cards, are donated directly to the senior center. “We decorated the store (for the holidays), and the Christmas books are out,” she noted. “We have a gift table with higherpriced books that can be given as gifts. We also have a whole section of Christmas books for children.” Other gift items are also available, as well as Christmas cards. “We have calligraphy kits, quilting kits (that can be matched) with a quilting book, picture frames, movies and DVDs,” said Fletcher-Moore. “They go well

with the books.” Shoppers will find thousands of gently used books organized for ease of shopping. The fiction section is sorted alphabetically by author, and nonfiction books are sorted into categories such as sports, history, decorating, self-help, cookbooks and parenting. Books within each category are also sorted. In sports, for example, there are basketball, golf, hunting and fishing sections. In addition, titles are alphabetized within each section. Fiction is broken down into mystery, romance classics and more. Fletcher-Moore noted that the store also offers books of local interest, coffee table books and large-print books. Additionally, there is a children’s section where the books are also alphabetized. In the children’s area, visitors will find a checkers game and a miniature couch where children can read while their parents shop. Fletcher-Moore noted that the store is always seeking book donations. The public is invited to donate new or used books in good condition. Books are accepted on Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. “People are really generous; they give us such wonderful things,” she commented. In addition to shopping opportunities, the bookstore promotes reading by offering monthly specials and “Wacky Wednesday” sales promotions. For December, the store is offering 50% off one book that is not specially priced. A bag sale is offered daily at the bookstore. For a fee, shoppers can fill a bag with books; bags are provided. The Second Reading II Bookstore is located in the Parkway Shopping Center, 929 S. High St., West Chester. He and his wife, Tricia, will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in December. In 2010, Keesecker composed “Sing to the Lord a New Song,” dedicated to retired organist Joseph J. She explained that the 1-mile walk, which follows a shorter version of the 5K course, is ideal for families. Parents with children in strollers and pet owners with dogs on leashes are welcome. All race and walk participants will receive refreshments, including fruit, doughnuts and beverages. All those who pay the registration fee for the 5K and the walk will also

get a ticket for a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses such as gift cards and gift baskets. “We will have giveaways at the end for all participants,” said McFarland. “Everyone who registered will get a shirt and an entry into the drawing.” The 5K will be professionally timed, and awards will be given to the top three overall male and female runners in the 5K. This year, proceeds will benefit The Challenge, which is a new Chester County nonprofit. “We just started the nonprofit this spring,” said McFarland. “It will help young adults with their next step in life, (including) graduating seniors and those with special needs.” Currently, the organization is working with area groups and churches that assist individuals to determine what events or services The Challenge can contribute to or assist in planning. Downstairs in the church, vendors will offer a variety of crafts for sale, including knitted items, jewelry, lawn art, wreaths, holiday décor and home items. There will also be a silent auction offering donated creations by each of the craft vendors. A light lunch will be offered. The menu will include hot dogs, chicken salad sandwiches, chips and beverages. All food will be served by the men of the church. The Cookie Walk and Craft Sale is being sponsored by the Glen Moore United

Methodist Women. Proceeds will be used to fund various missions during the year. “Over the past year we have supported Colonial Woods, City Gate in Coatesville, area food banks, Glen Moore Fire Company, Good Works, Women Against Domestic Violence, Steeple to People and others,” Carter noted. Christmas Parade from pg 1 At the end of the parade, Santa Claus will make a special appearance on a Coatesville Fire Department truck to officially usher in the holiday season. Parade attendees can also expect to see elementary, middle and high school groups, along with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, dance

academies, cheerleading groups, hip-hop dancers and baton twirlers. The parade committee reports that that at least 150 acts will be featured during the parade. “The parade is at least two hours long, but sometimes it ends up being longer,” said committee member

Underground Railroad Talk Slated As part of the East Brandywine Township Historical Commission Speakers Series, a program about the Underground Railroad will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3:30 p.m. at the East Brandywine Township Building, 1214 Horseshoe Pike, Downingtown. The program, titled “Angel at Philadelphia: William Still and the Underground Railroad,” will be presented by Dr. William Kashatus. Between 1830 and 1863, nearly 9,000 runaway slaves escaped to freedom using southeastern Pennsylvania’s Underground Railroad, a clandestine network of abolitionists. William Still, a free black

Philadelphian, directed this so-called “Eastern Line,” maintaining an extensive network of communication with those who opened their homes to fugitives, providing food, shelter, and clothing. Still also interviewed every one of the nearly 1,000 runaways who came under his care. The talk will examine the history and operation of the Underground Railroad’s Eastern Line, as well as the findings of Kashatus’ recent statistical study of the 995 runaways Still interviewed, which challenges the existing historiography of the Underground Railroad.

Marianne Scibek. The parade will honor grand marshal Jackie Milanese and the Milanese family. Jackie and her late husband, Gabe Milanese Sr., founded Milanese Remodeling in 1957. Jackie volunteered with the American Red Cross, served on the Coatesville School Board and is a past president of the Coatesville Garden Club, Century Club and the Congrega at Our Lady of the Rosary Church. The six Milanese children include Mike and Mark Milanese, the second-generation owners of Milanese Remodeling. “They are very generous and good to the community, and they are a very good choice (as grand marshals),” said Scibek. A special honoree at the parade will be Victoria Mullin, who won the title of Miss Pennsylvania Queen in May. The parade will include an automotive competition as well as other contests, including Best Appearing Fire Apparatus, Best Appearing Police Vehicle and Best Appearing Float. The all-volunteer parade committee raises funds year-round by gathering donations

Greens Sale from pg 1 Members of the Woman’s Community Club of Uwchlan (WCCU) will hold their annual Christmas Fair on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Uwchlan Meeting House, located at 5 N. Village Ave., Lionville. GPS users should enter Exton instead of Lionville for the address. Seasonal items offered for sale will include fresh-cut local greens, handmade wreaths and swags, holiday centerpieces and planters. Also offered for sale will be jewelry, homemade treats, homemade soup and hot dogs. There will also be an opportunity to win prizes. It is suggested that shoppers arrive early for the best selection. Proceeds from the sale will be used for the upkeep and restoration of the 1756 meeting house, which was once a Quaker place of worship and a school, as well as an Army hospital during the Revolutionary War. The building, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, is owned by the Uwchlan Conservation

Trust, and the WCCU is the manager of the building for the Trust. The WCCU and its garden class use the building for meetings and activities, including Christmas and spring plant sales. They also manage rentals of the meeting house for the Trust. An open house is held at the meeting house on the first Sunday of each month at 11 a.m. from April through November. Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations. According to Kueny, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a therapist or case manager. “People accepted in the program are screened, and they have the support of their mental health professional,” she said. Volunteers, who must be age 18 and over, are required to undergo an interview, get a background check and take part in a training session. Volunteers are asked to meet with their friends for four hours minimum each month for one year. The pairs can share activities such as meeting for lunch or going to a sporting event. As of this month, Thompsen reported that there are 45 Compeer one-to-one matches in Chester County; six calling matches, where pairs talk on the phone; and two e-buddies, where the friends communicate via email or text. “We need volunteers for everywhere in the county,” Kueny said. She mentioned that some volunteers with the program are students at West Chester University. To learn more about Compeer Chester County, readers may contact Kueny at 610436-4445 or dkueny@mhphope.org. More information, including a volunteer application, is available at www.compeer chesco.org. Readers may also learn more about the organization at www.facebook.com/CompeerChesco.

In his talk, titled “Reflections on 20 Years of Compeer,” Chisholm discussed that while people in recovery from a mental illness are treated by professionals and various therapies, they may lack the support of personal friends. That, he said, is why the Compeer program is so important and successful. “Compeer friendship matches are proven to create connectedness, offering measurable outcomes for both matched partners, such as overcoming feelings of social isolation, loneliness and hopelessness,” he stated. Chisholm remains involved in the program and still maintains two one-to-one Compeer friendships. During the event, the volunteer pairs were recognized, as well as members of the Compeer Advisory Council. The event also included a costume contest. Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partnerships (MHP), supported by the Chester County

She said that planning also takes place throughout the year, and the committee is always trying to come up with new ideas and ways to make the parade even more enjoyable for all. “We meet year-round after a break in January,” said Scibek. “We do try to tweak it every year. We look for new costumed characters that the kids would like. The kids love (the parade).” In the event of inclement weather in the forecast, a decision will be made on Thursday, Dec. 5, about the status of the parade. Cancellations will be listed at www .coatesvillechristmasparade.com and on the Coatesville Christmas Parade Inc. Facebook page. “We have been lucky with the weather,” Scibek added. “One year we actually held it in the snow.” For more information, readers may visit the website or the parade’s Facebook page.

EBYA Receives Donation

Joe Mason from Energy Transfer (third from left) recently presented a check to the East Brandywine Youth Athletics (EBYA). Accepting the donation were EBYA baseball committee members (from left) Azure Yoshitomi, Vic Ameye, John Montgomery, Catherine Courreges and Geo Yoshitomi. East Brandywine Youth Athletics (EBYA) recently announced that it was selected as one of 30 area youth baseball and softball programs to receive a substantial donation by Energy Transfer. The baseball committee was presented with the check at the East Brandywine Board of Supervisors meeting on Nov. 19. The contribution is in line with Energy Transfer’s long-standing community investment program designed to give back to the communities in which its employees live and

work. As a part of its recently launched #committed2PA campaign and its contributions to local youth sports programs, Energy Transfer recognizes that baseball and softball are part of the fabric that brings people and communities together. EBYA is a local sports association serving youths throughout Chester County. Registration for the spring season opened on Dec. 1.
