The cemetery, which was established in 1851, is one of the oldest African American cemeteries in Chester County. It is the final resting place of many soldiers from the Civil War, as well as World Wars I and II. The cemetery is owned by Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) of Downingtown. Thanks to Warren’s efforts, as well as those of his fellow Scouts, the cemetery is almost completely restored, graves are mapped and only a few headstones are waiting to be repaired. After funds were raised to purchase needed materials, the project included hundreds of See Scout Project pg 6

Nearly 400 participants turned out for the 28th annual Turkey Bowl held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. This year’s runners and walkers had to brave blustery conditions. “Despite the wind, we had 389 participants this year,” said camp director Bruce Gregory. “Some runners commented how windy it was around the lake, but they otherwise enjoyed the race.” The Turkey Bowl, which included a 5K race, as well as a 1-mile fun run for children, attracted local residents and those from out of town who were visiting relatives in the area. “As is the case each year, we had many local runners as well as participants from all over the country from Florida to Maine and from New Jersey See Turkey Bowl pg 3

The Downingtown Blue and Gold Marching Band combines the Downingtown East High School and Downingtown West High School marching bands to create a single-uniform team of performers. STEM students perform with whichever band would be their home school. Downingtown’s high school band directors are Andrew German of East and Ed Otto of West. In late December 2020, close to 400 ninth- through 12th-grade students and their chaperones will travel to Pasadena to participate in the performance. During this collaborative opportunity,

not only will students march in the parade, but they will also perform in the event’s Bandfest, which will feature field shows from all participating bands. As part of the application process, bands must send in a video submission, a resume of the directors, a unique story about the band and a list of accomplishments. More than 600 bands from across the country and internationally regularly compete to participate. Selection criteria include musicianship, marching ability and entertainment or special interest value, according to the tournament’s website. The band’s unique story was easy to find. Ten years ago, the band took this same journey, but ran into a few bumps along the way. The ordeal included flight changes due to inclement weath-

His twin brother, Iain, also completed the 5K, finishing third overall. “I just wanted to have fun with it and see what happened,” Noah said. “I didn’t think about (winning) until halfway through when there was no one around me.” Noah received a large trophy as a reward for his win. Other competitors in the 5K were the Johnson family of Elverson, including David and Susan Johnson and three of their children, Cameron, Celia and Rosa, who attend Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown. “There are six of us and five of us ran the 5K, so it was fun,” said Susan, noting that this was the second time the family took part in the event. “My boss’s parents moved to Tel Hai (Retirement Community) and his mom passed last year, so my boss’s family and (our family) ran it last year in memory of his mom. The organization is known for its annual Frog Leg Party, which began in 1934 and continues today. In addition to social events, the lodge is active in the community and gives back to charitable organizations to benefit neighbors in need. Over the past 100 years, St. Anthony’s Lodge has contributed an estimated $1 million to churches, hospitals, medical research, veterans organizations, education, scholarships, adult and youth activities, annual community events, local charities, and youth organizations. In recent years, the lodge has experienced a resurgence of activity and involvement from younger residents and their families. Today, its membership numbers are approximately 200 beneficial members and about 2,000 social members. The banquet rounded out a year of centennial celebration events, including a wine tasting, classic car and motorcycle show, bicycle ride, family picnic, Mass to honor St. Anthony, and dedication of a stained-glass window at the new St. Joseph’s Church in Downingtown. In addition, an original painting, “The First 100 Years” by Adrian Martinez, was unveiled at the banquet. For more information, readers may visit www.saintanthonys lodge.com.

KINZER FIRE CO.

State Sen. Andy Dinniman recently joined with members and families of St. Anthony’s Lodge to mark the 100th anniversary of the Italian-American fraternal organization that has influenced the lives of Chester County residents. In recognition of the milestone event, Dinniman presented Anthony Mascherino, secretary of the board of trustees and cochair of the 100th Anniversary Committee, with a special Senate citation at the organization’s 100th Anniversary Banquet. St. Anthony’s Lodge was established on Nov. 26, 1919, with approximately 40 members at a building at the corner of Stuart and Lancaster avenues in Downingtown. The purpose was to encourage a social and neighborly atmosphere, accumulate funds from dues for members who fell ill or injured, and provide for wives and families after death. Over time, the group moved from place to place before breaking ground at its current location on Church Street in 1929. The lodge added a women’s auxiliary organization in 1949, a swim club in 1959, and other facility improvements, including a fullservice restaurant with a banquet and catering hall. It has also offered many other social and service opportunities.

Protection Against Financial Scams

OneRunTogether (ORT), a nonprofit organization that provides spiritual and financial support to cancer patients undergoing treatment, held its fifth annual fundraising dinner and silent auction on Nov. 8 at the Downingtown Country Club. Vernon Murphy, ORT founder and executive director, explained that because local businesses sponsored the cost of the evening, 100% of the night’s donations benefited the charity. “Sponsors paid for the dinner so guests could attend for free and be able to donate,” said Murphy, noting that more than 140 guests were in attendance. “We were blessed to raise over $36,000 that will go directly to help local cancer patients.” In addition to the meal, the event included a silent auction where attendees placed bids on more than 35 items such as artwork, gift baskets, gift certificates, tickets to sporting events and more. Each year, the dinner features a guest speaker who was helped by the ORT organization. “This year, our speaker was Nichole, a local cancer patient who was diagnosed with uterine cancer with metastasis to the lungs last year. We were able to help her

pay bills,” Murphy noted. Murphy founded the ministry after losing his wife, Beth, to breast cancer in 2009. He explained that the name of the organization refers to the 5K runs that are held by ORT throughout the year, along with other fundraisers. The charity’s motto is “OneRunTogether - so no one fights cancer alone.” “We are a nonprofit organization based in Coatesville that helps local cancer patients in Berks and Chester counties,” Murphy said. “We assist them with paying bills like rent, mortgage, utilities, car payments, taxes and child care, just to name a few. With financial scams becoming more sophisticated, the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities (DoBS), the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and the AARP are working together to share tips to help Pennsylvanians spot a scam and protect their money and personal information. The PSP works closely with local, state and federal law enforcement partners to investigate fraud and scams. Consumers are reminded

to be cautious when sharing financial and other sensitive information this holiday season. Common scams include fake charities, phony websites and Social Security fraud. Strategies that can help Pennsylvanians protect themselves include verifying that a charity is legitimate, never following links in unsolicited emails, typing the website directly into their browser, being wary of any transaction involving checks,

He said that it is never too early for youngsters to learn the importance of giving to others. “(We tell the Cubs that) while they may be comfortable and have something to (eat) everyday, not everybody does,” Groben stated. “Scouting has a lot to do about being civic-minded and your placement in the world outside your house - in your church, neighborhood, school, community, etc.” In addition to taking part in the Scouting for Food program, the Cub Scouts recently held a caroling night at St. James Place Apart-

and girls in Pack 23, who are students in kindergarten through grade five, collected nonperishable food from friends, family members and neighbors and hand-delivered more than 700 items to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown. Scouting for Food is an annual BSA program where Cub and Boy Scouts leave bags for their neighbors, asking them to fill the bags with donated canned food items. One week later, the Scouts return to pick up the bags of food and deliver them to a local charity. Pack 23’s version of the program has the Cub Scouts bringing the filled bags of food donations to CPC, after which they are transported directly to the Lord’s Pantry. “We get the bags, which are provided by the Boys Scouts in midOctober, and (collect food) in November,” explained Cubmaster Peter Groben. “The Scouts collect the food and bring all of the bags to our meeting location at the church. All the bags are loaded into multiple parents’ vehicles. We are literally up the street from the food pantry, so we bring food directly there.” The Cub Scouts brought the food bags into the sorting area of the pantry by “bucket brigade” from the transport vehicles in the street. “It’s amazing to watch them do the bucket brigade,” Groben noted. The Cub Scouts learned how the food delivered that day would be sorted and provided to families in need throughout the area. “Every time we go to the food pantry, the volunteers there provide a little bit of insight (about their work),” Groben explained. “You walk into the distribution area, and there is a lot of food there, especially because of Thanksgiving. One of the things

ments. They provided cookies and other snacks to the senior residents. Santa was also on hand to distribute pinewood derby car kits to the Cubs. The Cubs also took part in Wreaths Across America at Hopewell United Methodist Church on Dec. 14, placing wreaths on the graves of veterans. Later that day, the Cub Scouts marched in the Downingtown Christmas Parade. For more information about Cut Scout Pack 22 and troop activities, readers may visit www.downingtown23.mypack.us. Scout Project from pg 1 hours of manual labor that took place over the course of a year. Warren said he learned of the cemetery from the Rev. Richard Lackey, pastor of Bethel AMEC, who contacted the troop about the work that needed to be done at the cemetery. “The project was appealing because I like history so much,” Warren stated. Warren explained that the cemetery is situated near the Woodmont condominiums located off Route 113. “The driveway is on Hollow Lane; (the cemetery) is hidden within trees,” he noted. Warren discussed the scope of the project with the pastor during a meeting held at the church. When visiting the site, the Scouts discovered ground that was covered with dead trees, brush that had grown nearly three feet high, trash, debris and broken headstones. “We started off by cutting down trees and removing branches,” Warren explained. “We had one of our local tree removal guys mulch them up for us. Then, we had to mow a lot of the areas and weedwhack. It’s a small cemetery, but a lot of the gravestones are hidden.

“We are currently working on getting some tombstone work done for the some of the gravestones by a local monument company,” he continued. “We composed a diagram of the all the gravestones there and who was (buried at) each of them at least, the ones we could read.” Warren held a car wash to raise funds for materials. “We used that money for a lot of the tools we needed, fuel for the weed-whackers and lawn mowers and gloves and eye protection so all the workers were safe,” he said. He said that while the group completed tasks in the cemetery, every effort was made by the Scouts to work in a reverent manner. “There’s a lot of history in the cemetery because it’s so old and so sacred,” Warren stated. “There were so many graves there of the dead soldiers, so we had to be respectful while working in there.” When asked what the most difficult part of the project was, Warren replied, “Planning was the most challenging. There were so many moving parts - getting the repairs together, making sure we have everything we needed -

all the logistics.” Warren, a junior at Downingtown High School East, is currently completing the requirements necessary to earn the Eagle Scout honor, including finalizing his written report about the service project

and earning the appropriate merit badges. He hopes to have his Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony by the end of his junior year. The event will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lionville, where the troop meets.

As part of his Eagle Scout service project, Warren Pixley and his fellow Scouts removed debris, mapped the graves and restored headstones at the Lindley Hill Cemetery in Downingtown, one of the oldest African American burial grounds in Chester County, where soldiers from various conflicts are buried.

Legislator Visits School Brandywine Wallace fourthgraders recently received a visitor from state Rep. Danielle Friel Otten, who stopped by to learn about the district’s mobile innovation lab and to engage students in a dialogue about how they can make a difference in their communities. Fourth-grade teacher Jennifer Moghaddam originally had the idea to invite Otten when the class began studying the government on the national, state and local levels. She noted that the class toured the state Capitol in Harrisburg on Nov. 8. Otten’s first stop during her visit was the district’s Mobile Innovation Lab. The converted school bus is a state-of-the-art STEAM mobile classroom that travels to each of Downingtown Area School District’s (DASD) 10 elementary schools. A project of the Downingtown Community Education Foundation, the Mobile Lab offers students throughout the district the opportunity to interact with advanced technologies and participate in unique educational experiences. Using a Makey Makey closed circuit kit, Otten helped students build a game control and then play Pac-Man. Students then learned some of

the fundamentals of electrical conduction and reflected on their teamwork abilities. Next, Otten visited fourthgrade social studies students. Students have been learning about their local legislators and how a bill becomes a law. Otten, who has a kindergartner in the district, asked students questions about what it means to protect the health and safety of their communities and how students can make a difference. She shared the story of how she became a legislator and encouraged students to take ownership in making positive changes in their communities. Students offered suggestions for change, including planting trees, recycling, using composters and using metal straws. Students became especially engaged when Otten used her proposed recess bill as a way to walk students through the steps it takes to create a law. Student volunteers discussed the pros and cons of increased recess time, and the room took a vote. To learn more about the Downingtown Community Education Foundation, the Mobile Innovation Lab or other opportunities for students in the district, readers may visit www.dasd.org.

The Rev. Dr. James Simmons (left), president of the Coatesville Area Branch of the NAACP, recognized former state Rep. Harry Lewis (center) and his wife, Regina Lewis. The Coatesville Area Branch of the NAACP held its 57th annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Oct. 26 at the R.L. Davis Fellowship Hall in Coatesville. Two area residents were honored for their contributions to the community. Former state Rep. Harry Lewis was recognized for his service to the community during his tenure as state representative, and Judge Grover Koon was recognized for his service as district magistrate for his life membership in the NAACP and membership in other civic organizations. Both received the Pathfinder Award, which recognizes a local citizen who creates a path for others to follow. In addition to the bestowing of the Pathfinder Award by the Rev. Dr. James Simmons, president of the Coatesville Area Branch of the NAACP, citations were presented by Linda Lavender-Norris, president of Coatesville City Council; Renee Carey, president of Borough of South Coatesville; and state Sen. Andy Dinniman. Keynote speaker Jerome Reide, regional director of NAACP Midwest Region III,

shared about the importance of voting. He reminded those in attendance of the sacrifices made by others and encouraged those in attendance to utilize the voting power to make the changes they want to see in the country. He stressed not only registering to vote but actually casting the vote and mobilizing the community to help others to vote. He also encouraged those in attendance to join the local NAACP and support its mission to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights for all persons. Life memberships were awarded to Jarrett Jackson and 6-month-old Mia Marie Bellock. The Rev. Dr. James Simmons emphasized the importance of membership and noted that Mia is the youngest member of the Coatesville Area Branch of the NAACP. Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization. Groups Announce New Partnership Nonprofit organizations Natural Lands and Trellis for Tomorrow are partnering together on a program that introduces Chester County youths who have faced social and economic disadvantages to real-world career opportunities in caring for nature. The program, called Youth Environmental Stewardship (YES), began in 2018. The partners recently announced they are looking to expand the program in 2020. The YES program focuses on creating the next generation of land stewards. A cohort of 13- to 17-year-olds works on a variety of conservation projects at two of Natural Lands’ nature preserves: Binky Lee and Bryn Coed, both located in Chester Springs. Projects include planting trees, trail maintenance and construction, invasive species removal, and various beautification projects. The program emphasizes conservation and allows participants to explore possible career opportunities in the field. Additionally, experiences on the preserves are designed to be metaphors for the real world. The YES program is run by Trellis for Tomorrow, a nonprofit that creates transformative, real-world opportunities for their program participants. Through the lens of sustainability, young people learn to make choices that foster health and well-being for themselves, their communities, and the environment. During the most recent season of the YES program’s pilot period, the summer of 2019, participants endured hot temperatures and heavy rains. Connecting people - especially young people - to the outdoors has

become an increasingly essential part of Natural Lands’ work. One of its goals is to cultivate the next generation of conservationists. Participants must apply to the program, and they receive a paycheck. According to Bob Steininger, the director of Chester County Youth Programs with Trellis for Tomorow, youths join YES to try something new, to have something to do for the summer or on the weekends in fall and spring, to meet people, or to learn more about environmental stewardship. Natural Lands is dedicated to preserving and nurturing nature’s wonders while creating opportunities in the outdoors for everyone. The land conservation organization, which is member supported, has preserved more than 125,000 acres, including 44 nature preserves totaling more than 23,000 acres. Some 2.5 million people live within 5 miles of land under the organization’s protection. For more information, readers may visit www.natlands.org.
