They include the complete remodeling of the interior, the addition of a display cabinet full of Civil War exhibits related to the local region, a high definition video that visually enhances

History On The Rails:
Exploring York County’s Train Stations
M
embers of the Friends of the Heritage Rail Trail Corridor know that many historical moments are inextricably linked to the train stations located in the southern section of York County. History buffs joined forces with railroading enthusiasts to revive and reopen the New Freedom and Hanover Junction train stations in the early 2000s, and now both locations serve as insightful exhibits that celebrate the unique history of the railroad tracks that run through the region. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn the stories of both train stations during open house events that run from May through October. The stations will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
from May through October and on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. from June through September. Holiday hours for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day will be 1 to 5 p.m., and special evening hours will be available on Wednesdays, June 14 and 28, at Hanover Junction from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesdays, July 12 and 26, at New Freedom from 6 to 8 p.m. Hanover Junction, located at 2433 Seven Valleys Road in North Codorus Township, has been

renovated to resemble a bustling train station circa the early 1860s. Visitors will learn about the station’s significance during the tumultuous Civil War years, which included a raid by Confederate soldiers and a stopover from President Abraham Lincoln on his way to deliver the Gettysburg Address.
Admission to both stations is free; however, donations will be accepted to help maintain the sites.

New Freedom station, found at 117 N. Front St., brings to mind a train depot of the 1940s, during the heyday of the Northern Central Railroad. The station also houses a railroad museum with an array of artifacts, including an actual size K-4 engine diorama and an original working freight scale and safe.

Parks
So Much To Discover
York County is home to hundreds of acres of park land, and visitors are invited to discover the deeper regions of the county parks through the York County Department of Parks and Recreation excursion rides. The trips are an opportunity for nature lovers to enjoy the outdoors and learn more about the history and landscape of York County.
Adventurers will hop aboard the “People Mover, which is a specialized trailer with benches for seating that is pulled by a pickup truck. Hourlong journeys will be narrated by program coordinator Jeri Jones, and there is a set cost per person. Attendees are encouraged to dress for weather conditions, and in the event of rain, the excursion will be canceled. Registration is required. On Thursday, June 15, excursion participants will travel through John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York. Features of the park include visits to the Master Gardener gardens, the Canine Meadows off-leash dog area, and recreational areas, along with an opportunity to view the sun through a special telescope at the on-site observatory. Departure times will be at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The Heritage Rail Trail County Park will be the focus of the excursion on Thursday, July 27. The journey will begin at the Brillhart Station parking area, located at Days Mill Road and Brillhart Station Road. Travelers will traverse a section of the Rail Trail and pass through Howard Tunnel, which is the oldest stone arch tunnel in the country along an active railroad. Opened in 1840, the tunnel was enlarged in 1875 to allow two trains to pass through side by side. Leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg, nearly 300 Union soldiers were stationed at the tunnel to guard it from any Confederate attack. Departure times will be at 11 a.m. and 1 and 7 p.m. An additional excursion at Heritage Rail Trail County Park will be held on Thursday, Oct. 12, with the same starting location. The tour will discuss the history of the Howard Tunnel as well as geological information in honor of National Earth Science Week. Departure times will be at 11 a.m. and 1 and 5:30 p.m. To register, readers may call 717-8407440. More information is also available at www.yorkcountyparks.org.

SPOTLIGHT:
Abounds At YorkFest Fine Arts Festival
The arts take center stage during the city of York’s weekend-long fine arts festival, known as YorkFest. The annual event, slated for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 26 to 27, with an opening reception on Friday, Aug. 25, brings together the best in visual and literary art and offers plenty of imaginative activities for budding young artists, as well. The event centers around the Adult Juried Art Exhibition on display at Creative York, 10 N. Beaver St., with an opening reception and awards presentation on Aug. 25. The Adult Literary Awards, including readings from each winner, will also take place during the opening reception. The celebration of art will continue on Aug. 26, when young artists from across York County steal the spotlight at the Youth Art and Literary Exhibition, on display at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum, 217 W. Princess St. Awards will be presented at 2 p.m.
Families can take part in an array of artrelated activities on Aug. 26 and 27 at the Creative York Family Pavilion, located at the corner of Market and Pershing streets. Crafts and other hands-on projects will be available for attendees of all ages. Downtown York will also be an artist hotspot with the Yorkfest Festival Marketplace offering more than 100 specially chosen fine artists displaying and selling their handiwork, along with multiple performance areas that will showcase local musical talent and entertainment acts. The Silken Literary Tent, inspired by Robert Frost’s poem “The Silken Tent,” will house an array of poets, storytellers, and playwrights who will share performances and readings of their literary craft. Additional activities will include walking tours of the murals of York, demonstrations, a chalk walk, spin art bicycles, a free jazz concert, and the Historic Codorus Creek Boat Parade. Ample food and beverage options will be available at various locations throughout the festival. Additional information, including artist entry details and a schedule of events, is available at www.york city.org/visitor/annual-york-cityevents/yorkfest/.

The York Fair, which traces its origins to 1765, offers an array of family-friendly attractions and entertainment. The weeklong event, scheduled to run from Friday, Sept. 8, to Sunday, Sept. 17, this year, will attract thousands of people to the fairgrounds located
at 334 Carlisle Ave., York. Agricultural and craft displays will spotlight the skills and creativity of York residents, and the highly anticipated butter sculpture will take its place in a climate-controlled display case in Memorial Hall West.

Center. The 4-H Club of York County will also offer educational activities for children in the Farm Animal Learning Center, which features learning centers and a petting zoo each year. Continued on next page

Community Courier Day at the York Fair will be held on Monday, Sept. 11. Typical fair attractions such as games, rides, and musical
entertainment can be found at the York Fair, and this year’s headlining musical act will be Southern rock pioneers Lynyrd Skynyrd on Thursday, Sept. 14. The fair will also offer an array of strolling acts, such as the Danny Grant Variety Show and
the Pink Cowboy. After taking in all the sights and sounds, fair visitors can bring their taste buds into the mix and choose sweet or savory treats from the many unique and inviting food vendors. Funnel cakes,
soft pretzels, milkshakes, sausage sandwiches, and other mouthwatering options will satisfy any culinary craving. For an overview of the events and offerings of the 2017 York Fair, check out www.yorkfair.org.

Magic Of C
Each holiday season, York County’s Rocky Ridge Park, 3699 Deininger Road, York, becomes a glowing beacon of Christmas cheer thanks to Christmas Magic, a light display that is truly a sight to behold. More than 600,000 lights adorn the
half-mile trail, which includes several holiday scenes and five heated pavilions. Visitors will find all the trimmings of the holiday spirit, such as model train displays, animated exhibits, and the man himself: Santa Claus. The festive attraction was christened in 1984, featuring 10,000 lights and props, and it has grown into the largest program presented by the York County Department of Parks and Recreation each year. More than 4,100 volunteer hours go into preparing the massive display. Christmas Magic was named a York County

Christmas Heritage Event by the York County Planning Commission in 2014, and the event continues to build on that title by offering additional entertainment and concessions. Guests may enjoy a variety of fare including french fries, chicken strips, hot dogs, funnel cakes, nachos, and, of course, ample hot cocoa. Musical acts are lined up each year, including local acoustic performers, full rock bands, school choirs, and solo vocal acts.
updated admission prices, dates, operating hours, and a list of entertainment acts, as well as other information, at www.yorkcountypa.gov under the Parks and Recreation menu.
The event also spotlights local organizations and charities such as Toys for Tots, the York County Food Bank, Steam Into History, and the York County Conservation District. Interested
