Scholarship honors longtime educator
BY CATHY MOLITORISFor many years, Kathy Bower made a positive impact on the Manheim and Mount Joy community. Now the longtime member of the Women’s Club of Manheim will continue to influence others even after her unexpected death in May of 2023. The Kathy Bower Memorial Scholarship was created for senior girls in Manheim Central School District who may experience a financial barrier while pursuing their education in teaching or writing.
As Shayna Sharp, education committee co-chair of the Women’s Club, explained, a member of the club suggested starting the scholarship as soon as news was shared with club members of Kathy’s passing. The option to donate to the scholarship was included in her obituary.
“Kathy’s genuine love for
reading and writing prompted our organization to offer this scholarship,” Sharp said. Kathy taught at Lafayette Elementary School in Lancaster and both Sporting Hill and Doe Run elementary schools in Manheim. Prior to teaching in the district, she served on the Manheim Central School Board. After her retirement, she became the

Molly Leaf loves wrestling. The Donegal eighthgrader is in her third season of the sport, but this year has been especially important to Molly. After wrestling on a boys’ team in the elementary school program and last year, she joined Donegal’s new all-female wrestling team this year.
“I absolutely loved getting to wrestle with a team of such amazing, talented girls,” Molly said. “There are many different challenges to overcome with a new growing sport. I love that girls’ wrestling continues to grow

“It is definitely a growing sport, and we are excited to see the team grow,” said Tiffany Sullivan, president of the wrestling booster club. “While Donegal only has a small team of 10 high school and junior high girls, we are anxious to see the team grow as our seven elementary girls join the Donegal girls’ team in a few years.”
Donegal will showcase girls’ wrestling at a tournament at the high school on Saturday, March 2, beginning at noon. “This will be the first only girls’ tournament that the Donegal Wrestling Booster
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen they started planning this year’s banquet and benefit auction, the committee members at Susquehanna Waldorf School chose a name - Gather Around - that reflects the school’s mission.
“This is a message of togetherness as we gather to support Susquehanna Waldorf School and the community that relies on us,” explained Courtney Kokus, development and marketing director.
Gather Around will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 6 to 10 p.m. at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville.
The evening will feature a catered meal by John Wright Restaurant, live music, a wine toss, and both a silent and a live auction.
“We will have a large array of art, local experiences, handmade products and custom offerings, including themed dinners and a murder mystery night,” Kokus said of the items

Proceeds from the event will benefit the school, located at 15 W. Walnut St., Marietta. Kokus explained that Susquehanna Waldorf School, which serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade, is affectionately known as “The School by the River.”
“Our independent school is dedicated to fostering a deep and enduring passion for learning, with a focus on nurturing the holistic development of each child through their educational journey,” she stated. “What makes us truly unique is our adherence to the principles of Waldorf education. Our approach goes beyond academics, emphasizing the development of
the whole child. Our curriculum integrates the arts, movement and experiential learning, time in nature, ensuring a well-rounded education that nurtures creativity, critical thinking and a sense of wonder.” Waldorf education began in the early 20th century, based on the principles of artist and scientist Rudolf Steiner. Today, there are more than 1,000 Waldorf schools in 64 countries around the world.
Susquehanna Waldorf School has been serving students in York, Lancaster and Dauphin counties for more than 35 years, and it currently enrolls more than 130 students. It relies on events like Gather Around to continue providing services to students.
“The proceeds will support the gap between our tuition and the amount it takes to run the school,” Kokus shared. “We also have a special appeal to support increasing the funding for our professional development fund, which is used to fund the many trainings our
teachers attend, some of which are held out of the country.”

Club has hosted,” Sullivan said. “The idea came from our elementary coach Scott Drace. Scott wanted to give our young girls an opportunity to have time on the mat with other young girls learning the sport.”
The tournament will feature elementary-age girls, and the public is encouraged to attend to cheer on the athletes while learning more about the sport.
The junior high and varsity girls’ wrestling team just wrapped up a successful inaugural season, said coach Liam McWilliams, despite the fact that many of the girls were new to the sport.
“It took a little bit to get going, but after a few of them stepped on the mat against real competition, it opened their eyes as to what they needed to do to succeed,” he said. “I always told the team that as far as this year goes, I do not care if they win or lose, only that they improve upon their losses as well as victories and get better.”
That’s exactly what happened, he shared. “I enjoy looking back to the first day of practice and thinking about how much every single girl
has improved,” McWilliams said. “Every girl should be proud of how they did this year, no matter if they won or lost, because they are the ones that are paving the path for Donegal girls’ wrestling.”
Harlee Fenicle, a fourth-grader, encourages other girls to try the sport. “Step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself at succeeding in the toughest sport,” she said. “And of course, be better than the boys.”
She plans to continue wrestling into high school, noting that she’s loved wrestling since she started the sport as a kindergartner.
Molly said that wrestling has taught her three important lessons: Don’t give up, work hard and be a good teammate. “Overall, wrestling has faced me with many challenges, emotions and life lessons,” she said. “That’s why I love wrestling.”
Although the wrestling season wraps up in March, information will be shared in late summer about the 2024-25 season. For more information, contact the Donegal athletic department at 717-492-1232 or follow “Donegal Wrestling Booster Club” on Facebook.

director of MCFEE, the Manheim Central Foundation for Educational Enrichment.
Kathy gave her time and talent to a variety of organizations in her community, said her friend and fellow Women’s Club member Sue Kopp.
“(She) was an active member in the Women’s Club of Manheim. She willingly served on the auction committee, grant committee and the education committee for many years,” Kopp shared. “In addition, Kathy was involved with the Manheim Library, and she held many leadership roles in her church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy.”
Kathy was married to Bill Bower for 53 years. They have two grown sons and four grandsons.
“Spending cherished time with her family was very important to Kathy,” Kopp said. “She loved to cook and bake and share those delicious talents with family and friends. Traveling was another great passion of Kathy’s, and she loved visiting places she had read about in books.” In the summer of 2022, Kathy and Bill fulfilled a longtime goal of driving the length of Route 66.

Model railroad club sets open houses
The Masonic Village and Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will hold open houses from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, March 2 and 3.
Attendees will be able to watch trains of various scales running on more than 1,600 feet of track in the club’s “train station,” which features seven display areas. The gauge sizes run from G scale (also called garden scale) to the tiny Z scale.
The Model Railroad Club building is on Freemason Drive on the grounds of Masonic Village at Elizabethtown. Once on the campus, follow the directional signs. Ample parking is available.
shared her love of writing poetry and reading with her students.
“No student was going to fall through the cracks if she could help it,” Kopp remarked. “She willingly and generously provided not only for the educational needs of her students, but also for the physical needs of their families.”
When the Women’s Club of Manheim members created the scholarship, they planned for it to be a $1,000 award. In January, they voted to increase it to a $2,000 scholarship.
Interested applicants may pick up an application in the Manheim Central High School guidance office or email Sharp at shaynae sharp@gmail.com. Applications are due to the guidance office by Friday, April 5.
The train club has operated on the Masonic Village campus since 1997.
