Exploring history in Mount Joy
BY CAT SHANNON
“Offering programs is a core part of our mission,” said Sue Hostetter, president of the Mount Joy Area Historical Society. “We collect and preserve our community’s history and make it accessible to visitors, homeowners and researchers through our programs, speaking engagements, displays, oral histories and online catalog.”
The historical society will kick off its 2025 lecture series with a presentation by Robert Frick on the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The program will
be held on Monday, March 17, at 7 p.m.
All programs are held on the third Monday of the month from March through November at 7 p.m., in the society’s Cemetery Road schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy.
On April 21, members of the Patriot Daughters will share their story. On May 19, Jean-Paul Benowitz will discuss Anabaptist presidents. The June 16 program will feature Stephen Shaw, who will talk about the court martial of Paul Revere. Mike Gerhard will discuss water dowsing on July 21. On Aug. 18, Michael Cassidy will present “Working
Gardens in 19th Century PA Dutch Country,” and on Sept. 15, Patrick Clark will share “James Buchanan: How He Spent His Retirement at Wheatland.” The Oct. 20 program will feature Michael Jesberger and a presentation on “The True Story of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
Nancy Groff will close out the 2025 season with a program called “Watt & Shand: East, West: Home’s the Best” on Nov. 17.
“In addition to hearing an interesting speaker with a Q&A session afterwards, you can tour the museum and enjoy light refreshments,” Hostetter said.
She noted that a committee of

Harvey’s Main Street BBQ will be for sale. Tickets may be purchased in advance from a member of the DFCA, or meals may be purchased at the event while supplies last.
DFCA has been holding an outdoor show for six decades. “Donegal Fish and Conservation Association is a 501(c)(3) club that has been around for 60 years, started by Ken Depoe and others to stock and raise trout for the Donegal Creek,” Hower shared. “We have fisherpersons visit Donegal Creek from all over the country and enjoy the surroundings of the creek and the ability to be able to catch trout on a fly rod year-round.”

DFCA operates a cooperative nursery, raising and stocking 3,000 to 5,000 trout annually to stock Chiques Creek, Little Chiques Creek and

Donegal Creek. The group also assists the state with stocking trout in other waterways.
“We stock several creeks for kids fishing derbies including the Conoy, Swarr Run and Donegal Presbyterian Church spring for our event coming up in April,” Hower said. Volunteers also hold regular trash cleanups on local waters and in local parks, plant trees and
maintain riparian buffers.
Proceeds from the DFCA’s outdoor show help the group pay for trout for stocking, fish food, the cost of running aerators and more, he said.
The show offers an opportunity to explore outdoor opportunities in the region and to promote the vision of the DFCA. Holding it in the fire company’s building also supports that
community effort.
“We have a mission to get adults and kids alike to participate in trout fishing on a local creek,” Hower remarked. “(This is) a great day to explore new adventures and communicate with the fire department volunteers and what they bring to the community.” For more information on DFCA, visit https:// donegalcreek.com.
Youth program to accept applications
The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is accepting applications for its next class of cadets, which will begin the program in July 2025. There is no tuition cost to attend. Meals, housing, uniforms, and school supplies are provided at no charge.
The KSCA is designed to give academically challenged teens a second chance at obtaining their basic education, as well as opportunities to learn leadership, self-discipline, and responsibility, to build a better life. The opening of the academy at Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG) in Lebanon County in July 2022 formally established the National Guard Bureau’s Youth ChalleNGe Program in Pennsylvania.
The program is open to
16- to 18-year-old Pennsylvania residents who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating, or who are unemployed or under employed. Applicants must be willing to be drug free. They must be free of felony convictions and voluntarily commit to the program. The first 22 weeks of the program consist of residential training at FTIG followed by 24 months of mentorship back in participants’ home communities.
The KSCA conducts two classes a year, one starting in mid-July and the other in mid-January. Applications are accepted throughout the year.
The KSCA is a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Department of Military and
Veterans Affairs (DMVA) and the National Guard Bureau in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Cadets are introduced to the military structure and focus on eight core components: academic excellence; physical fitness; leadership/ followership; responsible citizenship; job skills; service to the community; health and hygiene; and life coping skills. Graduates often receive high school credits, credentials, or a GED.
The award-winning National Guard Youth
ChalleNGe Program was launched in 1993, and it currently operates 38 sites in 29 states and territories. The program is both federally and state funded. More details, including the online application, can be found at www .pa.gov/agencies/dmva/ keystone-state-challenge -academy.html. New applicants also have the option of having an application mailed to them by emailing the academy at RA-MVPACHALLENGE@ pa.gov or by calling 717861-7767 or 717-861-8831.

Founded more than 50 years ago by a group of citizens who had a vision to preserve the community’s history, the Mount Joy Area Historical Society is open year-round on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and by appointment.
“Thanks to them, we now have a gem of a
museum, housed in two historic buildings - an African Methodist Episcopal church and a former one-room schoolhouse,”
Hostetter said. “We are out of space! Donations of objects that tell the story of the Mount Joy area keep coming, so we are beginning a capital campaign to build an addition onto the church.”
She also hopes people will step up to help the organization move forward with its mission of saving the past.
“As an all-volunteer organization, we need more members and volunteers who believe in preserving the past for future gener -
ations,” she shared. “Some members join the society in memory or honor of parents and loved ones to carry on their legacies.”
The historical society features something of interest to people of all ages.
“We have a photo scavenger hunt for children; many displays of objects; maps; a large collection of newspaper ads, articles and obituaries; photos; and postcards,” Hostetter said. “If you want to quickly get up to speed on Mount Joy and Florin history, the booklets and books we offer are the perfect way to do that.”
Reservations are not necessary for the monthly
programs. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. There are entrances in the front and back of the buildings. Parking is available across the street at RAISE28 or in back of the museum on the grass and along the alley. For more information, visit www.mountjoy history.com.

“All 19 of our Scouts participated in the Pinewood Derby this year,” said Stephanie Steele, Wolf Den Leader for Pack 39, who noted that nine of the Scouts had never participated in a Pinewood Derby before. “In addition, a few leaders and younger siblings enjoyed racing cars they made during an intermission just for fun.”
To prepare for the derby, each Scout received a block of wood, wheels and axles in December. They spent time shaping, painting and adding weight to their cars at home.
The race, which featured various heats on a three-lane racetrack, ended with a close finish for the top three spots.
Sarah Heisey took first place with a time of 2.5530 seconds. Noah Steele earned second place with a time of 2.5760. Mara Yoder came in third with a time of 2.5800.
Carson Cassidy’s car was voted “best design” by the Scouts. It featured a Minecraft design.
“The kids were eager to race their cars in the Pinewood Derby,” Steele said. “The room was filled with many cheers and mumblings of excitement as each Scout brought their car up to the starting line of the track and then anxiously waited for the race to begin. Family, friends and community members all attended and supported the Scouts during the event.”

Each Scout raced his or her car six times. After the race, awards were handed out, and many of the Scouts stayed longer to race their cars again and again on the track just for fun, she said.
Cub Scout Pack 39 has grown over the last year and is led by Bob Adams. The pack is supported by many parent volunteers and is sponsored and supported by The Rotary Club of Mount Joy and BSA Troop 39.
“Cub Scouts is a great organization that builds confidence, encourages kids to work with others, fosters friendships and teaches important life lessons,” Steele said. “One of my favorite aspects of Scouting is the fact that it encourages kids to try a plethora of outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing and

Five years ago, Nickolas Sieber held an event to raise money for a cross-country trip. The experience awakened a passion for event planning in Sieber, and he’s since used that interest to help others.
“Organizing the volunteers, hanging decorations and preparing the food was more fun than I could have ever anticipated,” he said. “After my inaugural event, I was hooked. Since then, we transformed the dinners
into a means of helping others. We have raised money for the Wounded Warrior Project; now-18year-old Charlotte Funk, who was severely injured in a car accident; a local Lebanon County family in need; and this year, Trevor Higgins.”
Trevor, a 17-year-old senior at Hurricane High School in Utah, was involved in a dirt biking accident on Oct. 27, 2024. His injuries left him in the ICU with a long road of recovery ahead, Sieber said.

All proceeds from a candlelit formal dinner
Sieber is organizing will be shared with the Higgins family. The dinner will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church of Colebrook, 58 Church Road, Manheim, on Saturday, March 29, from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
The formal dinner will feature a homemade three-course meal in a decorated dining room, with live music by Miss Maybell and Charlie Judkins.
“A social hour will provide time to mingle with other attendees, enjoy live jazz music

and even have a chance to win several door prizes,” Sieber said. The menu for the evening will include corn chowder and dinner rolls; roast beef served with a red wine au jus or horseradish cream sauce, herbroasted red-skin potatoes, and green bean casserole; and cheesecake with strawberry topping or pecan pie with vanilla ice cream.
Past charity dinners have featured themes such as the 1940s and the Wild West. “This year is a formal candlelit dinner, with participants encouraged to wear formal evening attire,” Sieber stated, noting that formal attire is not required.

“This year’s formal dinner is sure to be a blast while raising money for Trevor,” Sieber said. “Our incredibly talented musicians will perform two sets featuring early ragtime, blues, country and jazz music. It is a fun opportunity to dress to the nines while basking in the glow of a high-society evening. The food is always spectacular, and the fellowship is even better. It’s a special event that anyone won’t want to miss.”
He emphasized that he considers it an honor to help people in need, and he said it requires a team of volunteers who are as committed as he is to the cause to pull off a successful event.

more information or to purchase tickets, call or text Sieber at 717-598-8421. More information may also be found by searching for “5th Annual Charity Dinner” on Facebook. For more infor mation on Trevor’s story, visit his GoFundMe page under #Rev4Trev.

“It takes an army to make these dinners happen, and I have been very fortunate to have support from friends and family,” he said. “I have 12 volunteers arranged for this year’s dinner, and all of them have devoted countless hours of their time to support this endeavor. It is a very rewarding event, and I look forward to hosting it every year.”
The deadline to purchase tickets for the dinner is Wednesday, March 19. For

Ways to support local farmers
Farming has never been a vocation for individuals looking for easy work. Farmers typically work long hours, braving the elements regardless of how unpleasant the weather may be.
All that hard work is intended to ensure that individuals who live in rural, urban and suburban communities have constant,
readily available access to healthy foods. Such devotion merits support, and there are many things consumers can do to show their appreciation for local farmers.
• Buy fresh foods at a local farmers market. Farmers markets are many foodies’ favorite places, but they aren’t exclusive

to individuals with a passion for food. Everyone needs to eat, so why not eat foods grown locally, which are often more fresh and appetizing than imported fruits and vegetables? Additionally, people looking to buy more than fresh fruits and vegetables may find an assortment of other delectable items at local farmers markets, where anything from homemade tomato sauces to locally raised fresh beef and pork might be on sale.
• Order directly from local farms. Some farmers have embraced the e-commerce revolution and have begun selling the foods they grow to consumers via their own websites. Research local farms and determine if it’s possible to buy directly from them.
Farms may offer delivery or pickup, and consumers can enjoy fresh foods even more knowing that they helped farmers earn higher profits by buying directly from them.
• Check labels before buying in local grocery stores. Packaging

labels indicate where fruits and vegetables came from. When possible, choose items produced by local farmers. These products may include fruits, vegetables, meat, or even desserts like pies. Locally produced foods often taste more fresh than items sent from overseas or distant farms, and consumers will likely feel better knowing they helped to support local farmers.
• Spread the word. Get the word out after a satisfying experience with local farms and farmers. Whether it’s buying food from farms or enjoying family days that let kids enjoy time on the farm, sharing positive experiences via social media or word of mouth can be a great way to inspire neighbors to support local farmers, as well. Consumers can do much to support hardworking local farmers. In addition to feeling good about supporting their rural neighbors, consumers can also enjoy meals featuring locally grown, fresh foods.
