Connecting to the community: EPC at 70
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.
“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.
As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.
“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to
do his own thing.”
In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their children - Charlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.
Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers

On the road to health
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen Jennifer Angeles helps others on the path to healthy living, she knows what she’s talking about.
“I have struggled with being overweight and obese since childhood,” she said. “I was always trying a new diet, losing weight, gaining weight and continued to watch my weight climb and my health get worse and worse as the
years went by.” Determined to get healthy, she lost 100 pounds through diet and exercise, only to gain it back - and more.
She realized a piece of the puzzle was missing. “I felt utterly defeated,” she recalled. “I knew how to lose weight. I knew how to eat healthy. I knew what I was capable of physically.”
For the first time, Jennifer met with a therapist to focus on anxiety, depression and her

relationship with food, and everything clicked into place. She lost more than 60 pounds and decided to have gastric sleeve surgery in August of 2018.
“I have never stopped fighting to get myself to the healthiest I can be, and that includes self-awareness,” she said. “Being honest and real is an important part of getting to the results that I want.”
When she started therapy, Jennifer decided to document her journey on social media. “I wanted people to see that obesity is more than just moving more and eating less. I was very open about therapy,” she stated. “I shared what I was eating. I shared how I would exercise. I would share the bad days. … I shared all of it.”
At the end of 2019, she earned a certification in personal training to help connect with other women struggling with their weight, and she ultimately created a business, 2FAB Weight Loss and Fitness Support, which opened a storefront on Main Street in Mount Joy in February.
She teaches group fitness classes, including classes for kids, mothers and toddlers; cardio classes; and strength training sessions. She also employs instructors who teach yoga, Zumba and dance fitness classes, and she offers small group training and personal training.
“I teach a class in a few different assisted living centers,” she said. “Fit ness has no age limits or

In all of her classes, Jennifer focuses on the impact fitness has on mental health, physical health and weight.
“I think the most rewarding part of what I do is seeing how the classes make people feel,” she shared. “They sweat and laugh. They do more than they think they can do, and they feel exhausted yet accomplished.”
She also focuses on sharing her own truths.
“One of my gifts is vulnerability and authenticity, and I embrace it,” she commented, noting that her personal story helps her connect with other people on their health journeys. “I truly get it.”
A lifelong resident of Mount Joy and 1996 graduate of Donegal High School, Jennifer has been married to her husband, Alejandro, for 24 years. The couple has two children, two dogs and a cat.
She hopes her personal story will inspire others to take the first step on the road to healthier living.
“There is no one way. There is no perfect way. There certainly is no easy way,” she said. “However, it is possible. If you can dream it, you can achieve it.”

by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.
“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’”
Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”
Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.
Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Commu -
nity Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.
Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.
“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”
EPC publications focus on telling the good news happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.
“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down. There are so many good things happening in our community,
and we want to shine a light on them.”
Asked about the secret to EPC’s longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer. “We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees, some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”
As for the next 70 years, Charlie and Jocelyn envision a bright future. The company is transitioning into providing digital solutions for clients, while continuing to support local businesses and tell positive stories through its community newspapers and online at www.townlively.com.
“I love the legacy my grandfather started,” Jocelyn said. “I never met him, but I know his goal and his
mission was to support the community, and we won’t lose that connection to the community. We will continue to be hyperlocal, providing our advertisers with options to target just their region and news specifically about your school district and local community. We’re focused on right here, where we live, and all the good things that are happening.”

Program will bring history to life
BY CATHY MOLITORISHead to the Winters Heritage House Museum on Tuesday, March 26, and you can watch history come to life.
Dr. Daisy Century, a historical interpreter, will present the story of Mary Fields, the first Black woman to become a contracted U.S. Postal Service route mail carrier.
“(Century’s) performances are educational, transforming and empowering, just a few adjectives to describe the program,” said museum director Teresa St. Angelo, who noted that the program will feature a question-and-answer period.
Century’s presentation
fits nicely with the museum’s current exhibit, “No Matter the Dress, Women Making a Difference,” as well as the 2024 theme for the National Women’s History Alliance, “Women Who Advocated for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion,” St. Angelo said.
“When I started to research the extensive list of women whose accomplishments paved the way for other women, I said to myself, ‘If only they were here to tell us their story in person,’” she recalled. Inspiration struck when she discovered Century and her programs.
“I read about the characters she portrayed, and there was no question as to which woman I would love to talk to right now,” St. Angelo said of Century’s portrayal of Fields. “How did Mary forge ahead with the choices she made in positions women had never taken on before? Then I read about Dr. Daisy Century! All (Century) has experienced and accomplished will be such an inspiration.”
An award-winning science teacher who taught for more than 20 years in the Philadelphia school system, Century is also the author of four books as well as an actress and historical interpreter. She brings to life historic figures including Harriet Tubman, Madam C. J. Walker and Sojourner Truth.
People who attend
Century’s program will also have the opportunity to explore the museum’s exhibit.
“Women have made impactful change around the world, largely while wearing dresses, though not always the case,” said Lauren Fox, museum manager. The March exhibit features various topics and materials related to women and history, including clothing items dating to the 1800s on loan from local resident Jan Parola.
“We will have multiple vintage wedding dresses, a hat collection, a brooch collection, as well as formal and regular wear. There will be historical information about women’s clothing through the ages throughout the world,” Fox shared. “Addi -

tionally, in honor of Women’s History Month and this year’s theme, ‘Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,’ we will spotlight several women throughout history and career fields who had major impacts on the world. There will be a tribute to Barbie and the impact she had over young girls and women alike, which includes a vintage Barbie collection and history about the creator, Ruth Handler.” The exhibit also features hands-on activities for children.
On the day of Century’s program, the exhibit will be open from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the museum, located at 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Doors to the H.U. Coble House, part of the museum complex where Century will hold her program, will open at 6:30 p.m., and the performance will begin at 7 p.m.
St. Angelo hopes both Century’s program and the exhibit will leave people with an appreciation for history and women’s roles in making it.

“Daddy Long Legs” is based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster and follows the story of an orphan named Jerusha Abbott. Living in the John Grier Home in New England, Abbott is given a college education to become a
writer by a mysterious benefactor. She dubs the donor Daddy Long Legs after seeing only his elongated shadow. Abbott sends him a letter once a month, describing her newfound experiences beyond the orphanage.
LBC students will take charge of all aspects of the two-actor show, including performance, directing, music, costumes, props, light design, sound and tech. The students leading the production are part of an LBC workshop course taught by director of musical theater Stephen Atherholt.

School to host Family Game Night
Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy, invites the community to a Family Game Night and Open House on Friday, March 22, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event will offer an opportunity to have fun and to strengthen connections and foster a sense of belonging within the school community.
Food will be available from Ezzy Eats, Dutch Country Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzels, Sweet & Salty Handcrafted Rolled Ice Cream, and the school’s concession stand. Activities will include board games, card games, and outdoor activities like cornhole.
Attendees may meet Kraybill Mennonite School parents, teachers,
and community members at the event. Guided tours of the school will be offered, and staff members and student ambassadors will be on hand to answer questions.
From prekindergarten through eighth grade, Kraybill seeks to provide a nurturing environment where students receive a Christ-centered education. Classes are small to allow teachers to support their students spiritually, academically, and socially, often fostering friendships that last a lifetime.
People do not need to have children to attend the game night. For more information on this event or enrollment, contact the school office at 717-6535236 or office@kraybill mennonite.org.
