When Glen Leib formed the Donegal Alumni Band in 2004, he had a dream. The longtime Donegal High School band director wanted to gather 100 people to participate with the group in a Memorial Day parade.
After Leib’s death last July, members of the group are working in earnest to make his wish come true.
The Donegal Alumni Band is looking for members - and you don’t have to be a Donegal grad to join. Anyone is welcome, especially people who live in the Donegal area or are connected to Donegal alumni.
The band formed 20 years ago during the 50th anniversary of Donegal High School, said Jason
Spickler, who is a member of the band steering committee.
“Before that, alumni were invited to participate with the high school band at football games and various things like that, but the Donegal Alumni Band formed to be more of a parade band for Memorial Day events and other special events,” he said.
Joining the alumni band was a no-brainer for the current members, said Sharon Boyer, who is also on the steering committee and who enjoyed playing in the band in high school.
“It was always a whole lot of fun. I loved the camaraderie with everyone,” she said, noting that Leib was a persuasive influence. “Anything Mr. Leib wanted you to do, I would do it.”
Stan Tucker, a former drum
major and current band member, agreed, adding, “Mr. Leib was one of those guys who was just energetic all the time, and his energy was contagious.”
Currently, the Donegal Alumni Band has about 50 active members. The group performs with small ensembles at events such as Winterfest in Mount Joy and has played in the Manheim Memorial Day Parade.
This year, the group will participate in the Mount Joy Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 25; the Marietta Memorial Day Parade in the morning on Monday, May 27; and the Maytown Memorial Day Parade in the afternoon on May 27.
The alumni band will hold a rehearsal for anyone who can attend on Thursday, May 23, but attendance is not required
Thanks to the Donegal Music Association (DMA), students in Donegal School District have the support they need to foster their musical pursuits. Now you can help support the organization by attending Spring Thing.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 11, on the front lawn and in the parking lot of Donegal Junior High School, 915 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.
“We will have flowers for sale, a bake sale and a car wash,” said Ashley Zell, president of the Donegal Music Association.
BY CATHY MOLITORISStudents in grades three through eight will showcase their creativity at the Kraybill Mennonite School Art Show.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 4, in the program room at Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.
A wide variety of mediums will be featured, including some 3D artwork such as pinch pots and aluminum foil sculptures, said

Jan Betty, director of children and youth for the library.
For the second year in a row, Betty worked with Kraybill Mennonite art teacher Bre Martinez to organize the show.
“It was such a success last year, we decided to do it again,” Betty noted. The idea for the event came about after a Kraybill parent attended the Donegal Art Show held at annually at the library and inquired about doing a similar show featuring Kraybill students. Kraybill Mennonite School is open to students in

Tucker noted that the band is looking for band front members as well, and he emphasized that there is room for everyone in the band.
“There are people I run into who say, ‘I can’t play anymore,’” he said.
“And we say, ‘That’s OK. Just come along and walk with us. Just join us.’” The group will also have a truck or trailer to transport people who want to participate with the band but aren’t physically able to march, and the group has instruments for players to borrow if needed.
Uniforms of hats and T-shirts are provided, and the shirts display a message that has special meaning for the band members.

“The back of the shirt says, ‘Smile and Wave,’ and that is our theme,” Tucker explained. “It came from one of the first times we played in a parade, and to say the spectators were a little hostile is an understatement. While members of the community may view the artwork any time during the show, students will be available for a meet-and-greet to talk about their pieces from 10 to 11 a.m.

“Some of the art is based on the work of Georgia O’Keeffe,” she said. “It’s very exciting.”

For more than 20 years, Jerry Cole has dedicated his time to supporting the mission and programming of GEARS in Elizabethtown. To honor his contributions to the organization, a tree was planted in front of the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St. Current GEARS board members, GEARS staff members and program participants joined in the celebration, and thank you cards were presented by students from the GEARS preschool and kindergarten programs, as well as participants from the senior center.
“Jerry served 23 years on the GEARS board and played an integral role in starting GEARS in 2000,” said David Wendel, executive director of GEARS.
“Jerry served as the chairman of the GEARS board and helped lead the
organization through some difficult times, most notably the pandemic. Jerry could always be relied upon to volunteer his time outside of his duties as board chairman, especially with programs that targeted children and seniors.”
Cole said volunteering has always been important to him. “I have a strong passion for recreation and its importance in our community,” he shared. “Being able to give back to my community as a member of the GEARS board was so important because recreation impacts all members of our community, from children to seniors. The benefits are endless.”
Cole, who lives in Mount Joy Township, served as a Mount Joy Township supervisor for 30 years. “I helped start three park projects in Mount Joy Township, so I understand the value of recreation,” he said.
Volunteers like Cole play a critical role in supporting the operations and management of GEARS, Wendel commented. “In addition, they act as ambassadors by promoting the programs and events provided by GEARS in our community,” he said.

even something sweet for Mom.”
Proceeds from the event will support the DMA, which acts like a booster club for music programs in the district, Zell said.
“We support the music programs by holding several fundraisers all throughout the year, including sub and sandwich sales, whoopie pie and pie sales and our annual Tomahawk Feast, which will be coming up the first Saturday in August,” she explained. “We also sell candy grams at each of the schools’ holiday and spring concerts so that friends and family have the opportunity to encourage students, and all proceeds from those sales also go to the DMA.”
Funds raised by the DMA are used to help purchase equipment throughout the year, cover fees for transportation

to competitions and more.
Zell noted that student support is necessary for Spring Thing to be a success, since the students actively participate in the event, but the fundraiser also relies on the community coming out as well.
“This is a wonderful event and a great way to meet some of our awesome students and support their love for music,” she said.
