“Grease”
celebrates teenage life and love
BY CATHY MOLITORISIt’s a classic boy-meets-girl love story when Susquehanna Stage presents “Grease.” The show, part of the theater’s youth and teen production series, will be performed on select dates from Friday, May 10, through Sunday, May 19.
“This show follows a group of high school kids that are known as the bad kids,” said Paige Fairbanks, a sophomore at Manheim Township High School who plays Marty. “A new girl is introduced, and she’s a goody two shoes. She sees the guy she fell in love with over the summer, but he’s a completely different person, and the show goes through her finding herself and finding out about him.”
While audiences may be
familiar with the 1970s movie “Grease,” the cast members emphasize that the stage show provides a different look at the characters. “Where the movie revolves around Danny and Sandy, the stage show revolves

around more of the characters and gives them more of a personality and a heart,” said Titus Newswanger, a McCaskey High School junior who plays Danny. Maeve Sasse, an eighth-grader in Wilson School District who plays Patty, agreed, adding, “All of the characters have very unique
personalities. That’s a really cool aspect to this show. Everyone has a completely different back story and what their intentions are.”
Even though the show takes place in the 1950s, its themes are still relevant today, said Riley Fidler, a Conestoga Valley High School sophomore who plays Rizzo. “I feel like in schools, there is always going to be the good kids and the bad kids, and there’s always going to be conflict with that,” she said. “I feel like a good coming-of-age plot never really goes out of style.”
In fact, the cast members say they can identify with their characters. “Teenagers are really the same as they always were in how they act and how they interact with each other,” said Charlotte Evans, a Commonwealth Charter Academy freshman who plays

Rolling along to grant wishes
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen the Make-AWish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy rolls through town on Sunday, May 12, it will honor a tradition that began 35 years ago with the wish of one child.
“It all began with Wish Kid Matt Strawser,” said Michelle Ruel, director of marketing and communications for Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley. “Matt was fascinated with big rig
trucks, so it was no surprise he wished to ride in a big rig and talk to his sister, Heather, on the CB radio.”
Since 1990, almost 12,000 trucks have driven in the Convoy, and the event has raised more than $9.2 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.
This year’s Convoy will kick off with a carnival beginning at 9 a.m. at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. The Convoy will
BY CATHY MOLITORISTo say Teresa Peschel loves Agatha Christie would be an understatement. The Hershey-based author spent almost three years watching every Christie film ever made - all 201 of them - and reviewing them and publishing a book called “Agatha Christie, She Watched: One Woman’s Plot to Watch 201 Agatha Christie Movies Without Murdering the Director, Screenwriter, Cast, or Her Husband.”
She and her husband, Bill, who
together own the publishing company Peschel Press, will discuss their labor of love at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, on Saturday, May 18, at 1 p.m.
As Teresa recalls, the project was not pre-planned. “In July of 2020, I brought home the DVD of ‘Crooked House’ from the library,” she said. “We watched it and enjoyed it.” She reviewed it, and Bill published it on the couple’s book-focused website. A few weeks later, while working on

Narvon resident and author Joel Moore is a stickler for details. When presented with the design for the cover of his latest book, “Real Boys of the Civil War,” Moore noticed issues with the equipment the boys were carrying and with their uniforms. He worked with the designer, Gien Carlo Tan, to correct drums and uniforms until he was happy with the look. “It’s gorgeous,” noted Moore of the cover, which depicts more than a dozen boys in Civil War garb.
Moore pointed out that more than 200,000 underaged young men took part in the Civil War. “Real Boys of the Civil War” is Moore’s first work of nonfiction. The book begins with the historiography research paper Moore originally wrote as a student at West Chester University. The book also tells stories of the individual boys who served,
and it finishes with photo selections of many of the young soldiers.
One of the boys included in the book, Nathaniel McClean Gwynne, was still a civilian when he served, but his valor earned him a Medal of Honor. Moore explained that because Gwynne was too young to enlist, he went off to war as a camp helper. “At the battle of Petersburg, (Va.), the captain reminded the boy that he couldn’t go

into battle,” said Moore. “(Gwynne responded), ‘That’s not why I’m here,’ and he went in.” Gwynne rescued the flag when the color guard went down, but he lost an arm to cannon fire and suffered a leg wound as well. When Gwynne’s story made the newspapers, he was nominated for the Medal of Honor. That is when administrators in Washington, D.C., discovered the war hero was not enlisted. “They backdated his enlistment to when he first joined, and he got full pay,” noted Moore.
Moore, who has been researching and writing about the boys of the war between the states for 20 years, was in communication with professor Jay Hoar, a University of Maine at Farmington retiree, until Hoar’s death in 2023. Moore has permission to use Hoar’s research, and Moore included Hoar’s story of Benjamin Franklin Williams of Georgia in the book. Williams was a member of the home guard - boys as young as 6 years old who served as lookouts, couriers, and supply movers, among other duties. “Williams became a wagoneer at age 7, and he served the entire four years of the war,” relayed Moore, adding, “At age 11, he was a veteran.”
Moore has more than four decades of experience as an educator and he recalled teaching the Civil War through the eyes of the boys who took part. More information about Moore and his books may be found at www.jarthurmoore.com.
Moore is known for his many works of historical fiction, including “Journey Into Darkness” and “West to Freedom.” “Real Boys of the Civil War was launched at Moores Memorial Library, Christiana, on April 27. Moore will be featured at several upcoming events, including the Civil War Living History Encampment in Quarryville, from Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19, and the Memorial Day event in Maytown on Monday, May 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. In June, Moore will be at the Strawberry Festival in Bainbridge on Sunday, June 2, from noon to 4 p.m., and the Burning Bridge in Columbia on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to noon. He will appear at the White Chimneys Estate in Gap on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 9:15 p.m., and in August, he will be featured at a 2 p.m. presentation at Hopewell Furnace in Elverson on Sunday, Aug. 11.

Agatha Christie
annotations for “The Complete, Annotated Secret of Chimneys” by Christie, she investigated whether a film adaptation existed. It did, so they watched it as well. It was terrible, Teresa shared, but it prompted her to watch more films in the library’s DVD collection.
“That’s when Bill made the fateful statement, ‘If we watch all the movies, you can review them, and I’ll make your reviews into a book,’” Teresa said with a laugh.
At the library, Teresa will discuss Agatha Christie’s two most famous detectives, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and how they’re portrayed on film. “I have 13 Poirots and seven Miss Marples in all,” she commented. “I illustrate each detective with a film clip so you can see the variety of actors and actresses portraying them.”
Teresa’s literary accomplishment is so impressive that she was invited to participate in the International Agatha Christie Festival in England this fall. “I was invited because I’m the only person to watch every Agatha Christie film and review them, publishing my reviews online and in book form,” she said. “I’ve been invited to numerous podcasts, which helped bring me to their attention. … Bill will come along with me because I can’t do it without him.”
Teresa said she loves Agatha Christie because

the author is so versatile. “She is very readable. She offers dozens of entry points for any reader. She writes far more widely than most people realize. She can be quite funny in a sly, dry manner,” she said. “She’ll fool you completely, and she makes it look easy.” When she’s not writing (or reviewing films), Teresa enjoys gardening and spending time with Bill, their three children and their four rescued cats. She also writes science fiction romances under the pen name Odessa Moon. “I want people to know that I didn’t start writing until I was about age 53,” she said. “I’m 64 now. It’s never too late.”
Stephanie Funk, operations coordinator for the library, said Teresa and Bill have spoken at the library in the past, and both are very entertaining speakers. “They’re engaging and passionate about what they are sharing,” she stated. “If you’re an Agatha Christie fan or are just dipping your toes into the extensive Agatha Christie world, you’ll want to come to this program.”
