Proclaiming the Good News
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The members of Proclamation Presbyterian Church in Mount Joy like to use a phrase to sum up their ministry: “All are welcome, all are needy and all are needed.”
“Christ gives His invitation to everyone, so are all welcomed in that sense,” said pastor Troy De Bruin. “We are all sinners in need of a Savior, so we are needy, and God has given gifts to every person, youngest to oldest, to be used in service, so we are needed.”
As the church marks its 10th anniversary, De Bruin and associate pastor Collin Gingrich are looking forward to continued growth while looking back on their journey so far.
“We are a daughter church of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster,” De Bruin shared, noting that Westminster has a history of planting churches. De Bruin, who joined Westminster as a youth pastor in 2000, worked with Westminster staff to look for a new church home in the Mount Joy/Elizabethtown area in the fall of 2013.
By February of 2014, Proclamation Presbyterian Church was welcoming worshippers to services at Mount Joy Church of God. The church met on Sunday evenings, but after a few years, the congregation changed locations to be able to offer Sunday morning services. Proclamation met at Florin Church of the Brethren from April 2016 to March 2020 before moving to its current home at Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy.
Both De Bruin and Gingrich note that Proclamation offers the strength of the Presbyterian denomination combined with a small-town, community spirit.
“As a denomination, there’s a high focus and priority on
preaching the Word of God,” De Bruin said. “Our worship is both with reverence and with joy. … We intentionally rehearse the Gospel in our worship service, and we partake of the Lord’s Supper every week. Being a smaller church, that helps us
to be more of a family, with a welcoming feeling. There is a true welcoming spirit and love for one another.”
Added Gingrich, “It’s in our name: Proclamation. Our weekly proclamation is the Gospel. We remember the Good News that

Building character through bicycling
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Over the past decade, Lee DeRemer has watched great things happen with Lifecycles.
The nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program aims to build young people of character through bicycling.
“This program appeals to a wide range of young people with
different gifts and skills, but it seems to really attract teen boys and girls who haven’t found their way in a team sport or another program in school,” he said. “For many kids, this is the first thing that clicks, and that’s very rewarding.”
Lee and his wife, Marcie, started Lifecycles with a mission of supporting youths in the

Getting back in the game for a cause

At any age, amputees and individuals born with limb loss or limb difference face many challenges. But children in America often face additional obstacles when seeking prosthetics and therapy due to a decreased likelihood that their family’s insurance will cover the cost. Nonprofit organization Iron Leg Corp. seeks to provide support for children in Lancaster County who are in need of assistance with obtaining prosthetics.
Iron Leg is one of the few
organizations of its kind, and it will hold an equally unique fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville. The event will begin at 7 p.m., and it will entail full-contact football games for individuals above the age of 34 and amputees who are 18 or older. Registration is available online for residents in any part of Lancaster County, and the football teams will be helmed by both former and current coaches from several local school districts, including

Donegal, Hempfield, Solanco and Penn Manor.
Practices for the game will begin at the end of May; exact dates and additional information will be announced by Iron Leg once they are available. The registration fee will include equipment such as a uniform, a helmet and shoulder pads. Players are required to bring a seven-pad girdle and turf cleats. To register online, visit https:// ironleg.org/interest-form.
The primary goal of the fundraiser is to acquire the resources that allow Iron Leg to provide financial support and to purchase prosthetics for children with limb
loss or limb difference. Due to how quickly children outgrow prosthetics, insurance often will not cover the cost; if it does, it typically only allows the child to obtain a basic prosthetic that is unsuited for physical activities such as playing sports or hiking. “Most of the time, insurance companies won’t pay for a $30,000 leg if the kid is going to grow out of it in within two years,” said Iron Leg co-founder Matt Millhouse. “But the thing is, that means the kids miss out on being more active. A basic leg will allow them to walk, but to us that’s not good enough. A kid can run track and field with a good leg.”
In addition to raising funds for children in the community, the goal of Iron Leg’s fundraiser is to give football players an opportunity to play one more game under the lights of the Millersville Marauders’ stadium. Not only do Millhouse and fellow Iron Leg co-founder Sean Laukhuff hope to engage adults who want to stay active and enjoy a full-contact football match, but they also see the fundraiser as an opportunity for players’ children and grandchildren to see them out on the field.
“It was really cool to see the comradery among the coaches when we had our first meeting,” Laukhuff said. “When they coached for their school districts, they were always playing against each other. But now they’re on the same team, and they’re excited to plan out their plays and strategies.”
Sponsorship opportunities are available on Iron Leg’s website. To purchase a ticket to spectate the game, visit www.717shows.com/ events/iron-leg-football-game.

community. “This program always has been and still is 100% free for the boys and girls who participate,” Lee said, noting that bikes, helmets and other safety gear are all provided if needed, along with a free hot meal every time the group gets together for a ride.
“This year, we’ve got 139 boys and girls registered, and 38 of those are first-time participants,” he shared. “The bulk of our participants are from Lancaster County, but we have folks from York, Lebanon, Dauphin and Perry counties, too.” The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and Lifecycles teams are split into boys’ and girls’ groups. Boys’ and girls’ teams ride from Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, on Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m., and boys’ and girls’ teams also ride from Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville, at 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays.
In addition to the groups enjoying rides around the countryside of Lancaster County, some of the more seasoned participants are training for longer, challenging rides taking place this summer. A girls’ team will ride a six-day, 230-mile route along the coast of Lake Michigan, finishing at Mackinac Island. Boys’ teams will ride a six-day, 320-mile route from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., on the Great Allegheny Passage/C&O Canal trail; a six-day, 290-mile route to Niagara Falls; and an eight-day, 350-mile route from northern Pennsylvania through the Adirondack Mountains. A boys’ team will also take a 13-day, 430mile ride in Colorado, finishing with a summit of Mount Blue Sky on North America’s highest paved road at 14,271 feet.
“It’s going to be a very fun summer,” Lee said. “We are also rolling out an internally devel -

Teams will ride locally during the week through the end of August, and Lifecycles will continue with rides on two Saturdays in both September and October.
Although the season has already started, youths can join the program at any point. Volunteers are also welcome at any time, Lee said.
He noted that as Lifecycles celebrates 10 years of serving youths, he continues to appreciate the impact the program has on its participants.
“It’s common for a lot of teens to feel unseen in their school environment,” he said. “They are flourishing in Lifecycles.”
