Donegal students recognized at Apollo Awards
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For a moment last month, Derek Palmeri knew what it felt like to win a Tony Award. The rising junior at Donegal High School earned an Apollo Award for his performance as the Emerald City Guard in the school’s production of “The Wizard of Oz.”
He described his reaction to hearing his name called at the May 19 ceremony as “complete and utter shock.”
“I jumped out of my seat and started to make my way down the aisle,” he recalled. “There were goosebumps and a warm fuzzy feeling that began to course all throughout my body, as well as a sense of accomplishment and self-pride.” Derek won the Outstanding Featured Performer in a Musical award.
Created in 2008, the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards are presented annually to recognize outstanding achievement by local public and private high school theater programs in the central
Pennsylvania area, explained Shawn Newlin, production manager and publicity for Donegal Performing Arts (DPA). Produced by the Hershey Theatre Education Department, the awards are modeled after the Tony Awards that recognize Broadway shows and performers.
“Twenty-five schools this year were recognized for outstanding work in a high school play or musical,” Newlin said. “Each nominated student and school receive a monetary scholarship and certificate, while the winners receive a glass trophy and additional scholarship money.”
DPA had five students nominated in the awards this year, all in various categories for the spring production of “The Wizard of Oz.” Zoe Snyder was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Musical for her por trayal of Glinda the Good Witch. Rachel Wallace was nominated for honorable mention in the same category for her role as the Wicked Witch of the West. Landis
Cramer, who played Hunk/ Scarecrow, and Aiden Hipsky, who portrayed Zeke/Cowardly Lion, were both nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical. The school as a whole was nominated for Outstanding Dance Number in a Musical for “Jitterbug.”
“In a separate category, Hannah Slobozien was nominated as an Outstanding Student Playwright,” Newlin shared, noting that Hannah also played the role of Dorothy Gale in “The Wizard of Oz.” Danica Guydish and Isabella Herman received Donegal’s two Spirit of Theatre awards at the ceremony, and multiple Donegal students performed in the award ceremony’s opening song and dance number, “I See Stars” from the Broadway production of “Mean Girls.”
Newlin said it’s a well-deserved honor for so many DPA students to be recognized.
“Our students put in countless hours for each production, both on- and off-stage and behind

Long’s Park has a history with music in Lancaster.
It’s a history of culture. It’s a history of diversity. It’s a history of symbiosis.
It’s a history that continues to evolve.
The 62nd season of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s (LPAF) Summer Music Series is upon us. More than bigger and better, this Summer Music Series is as varied as ever.
“What we’re trying to do is
bring diversity in genre and people from different areas of the world to Lancaster,” said Kristin Chronister, LPAF’s president-elect. “I think rather than top ourselves each year, we’re looking for high-end music we haven’t showcased in a while. We’re looking for different themes in order to bring different kinds of music to Lancaster. It’s more about, ‘Let’s do something different and have fun.’”
This summer’s music series, which includes 12 concerts at

Along with books of every genre, the sale will feature DVDs and CDs.
“We also have a lot of collectible-type magazines,” shared Diane Rice, who is co-chairing the book sale with Lora Jones. “That was a category we had stopped for a while, but we still get donations, and there is value to the magazines.” Magazines will be grouped by topic, ranging from dragons to woodworking.
Each book sale offers unique titles and a wide variety of genres, Rice said. “This year we have a very, very strong history section,” she commented. “We have had a lot of really good donations of history books. We also have a strong special-pricing section.”
A concession stand will offer hot dogs, barbecue, sweets, treats and drinks during the book sale. Proceeds from the book sale and concession sales will benefit the Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library, a nonprofit group of volunteers created to support the library. All revenue from the sale supports new materials, programs and equipment, and proceeds go directly to library programs and services.
Rice noted that the sale relies on volunteers who sort books year-round in a storage shed behind the library and work
shifts at the event. The Friends also voiced their appreciation for library staff and board members, who are helping to defray the cost of moving the approximately 800 boxes of books from storage to the high school for the sale.
“We are also very thankful to Donegal High School, because they bend over backwards for us,” Rice said.
She hopes people will come out to explore what the sale has to offer, adding, “There’s just such a wealth of books for everybody. These are quality books at good prices.”
Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted at the sale. Shoppers are encouraged to bring tote bags. The Friends group is always seeking adult volunteers. For more information, visit https:// friendsofmsl.org or search for “Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library” on Facebook.

Long’s Park Amphitheater, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, will feature artists performing genres of music from American rock to gospel rock, from the blues to bluegrass, from country to pop rock. All of the shows will be performed on Sundays starting between 7 and 8 p.m., and most of the concerts last from 90 minutes to two hours.
The sponsor-supported, publicly funded, all-weather shows are free to attend.
“As a foundation, we believe that music is not only important to a community but vital,” said Chronister. “Art is meant to be consumed, whether you can afford it or not. The summer series can enable people to experience music without leaving their community and not spending any money. We regularly have people thanking us because that particular artist got them through a hard time. That’s important to us. We believe music is part of every thriving community.”
LPAF’s 2024 concert lineup kicked off on June 2. The Summer Music Series will feature soul/funk group Snacktime at 7:30 p.m. on June 16; Carolyn Wonderland’s blues at 7:30 p.m. on June 23; the U.S. Army Band’s patriotic performance at 8 p.m. on June 30; the three-act “A Night in Nashville,” featuring Jeff Cohen, Brett Sheroky and The Close at 7 p.m. on July 7; American singer/songwriter Marc Broussard at 7:30 p.m. on July 14; Canadian/Colombian world music artist Ramon Chicharron at 7:30 p.m. on July 21; the three-act Watkins Glen Tribute at 7 p.m. on July 28; gospel rockers The Sensational Barnes Brothers at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 4; the high-flying United States Air Force Band at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 11; and the all-female bluegrass band Della Mae at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 18.
Local artist PA Mambo Orquesta will perform a 45-minute opening set on June 16, as will locals Los Monstros on July 21.
“Each night brings a new flow,”
said Chronister. “You shouldn’t expect to sit there and have a chill night. There’s excitement just to be there. It can be infectious, and the excitement permeates. You want to jump up. You want to move your body. The vibe is alive. It’s something that gets stronger as the evening goes on.”
On average, about 3,000 spectators make up the audiences for each performance.
“There is such a deep history with the Summer Music Series. It’s almost Lancaster lore,” said Chronister. “Not long after Long’s Park was founded, the amphitheater was built. The mission of the foundation became, ‘We’ve got this amazing venue, so let’s see what we can do to bring music into Lancaster.’ From an evolution experience, we’ve grown it and then maintained it. We’ve taken cues from the public about what they want to hear.”
