Donegal Class of 2024 celebrates graduation
BY CATHY MOLITORISClass president Andrew Steinkamp infused his speech at Donegal’s 2024 graduation ceremony with a bit humor. He thanked all of the people who have helped him over the years, including his parents. “I know my parents were my biggest help, from waking me at 8:02 so I could be at school at 7:50, to always keeping money in my lunch account so I could eat eight slices of pizza every week,” he said at the ceremony held on June 5 at the high school.
He reminded his peers that although high school may be over, the students have really only completed a small portion
of their lives, and there are lots of adventures to come. “As my favorite race car, Lightning McQueen, also had to learn, ‘You can’t turn back the clock, kid, but you can wind it up again,’” he said.
The graduation ceremony included a performance of the national anthem sung by senior Zoe Snyder, members of the senior chorus performing “I Lived” by OneRepublic and speeches from principal John Haldeman, superintendent Gregory Kiehl and school board president Oliver Overlander III.
Hannah Slobozien was named valedictorian. She will attend Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University this fall, where she plans to major in
communications and political science.
She began her speech with a surprising statement: “In sixth grade, I almost burned down the school library.” She went on to explain that she had accidentally left a glue gun plugged in over the weekend, and she worried it would catch on fire. It didn’t, but she burned her hand on that same glue gun, and she compared that story to the future the graduates face. It’s important, she told her classmates, to know when to let
BY CATHY MOLITORISCovering 24 acres in Mount Joy, Little Chiques Park provides recreational opportunities including fishing, picnicking and birding. To make the park even more enjoyable for the public, the Mount Joy Borough Park Advisory Board has created
a survey, encouraging residents to submit their feedback on what enhancements they’d like to see on the property.
The survey is part of a master plan to update and improve the park, located at 229 Park Ave., and the surrounding area, said David Christian, a member of the committee. “We didn’t want
BY CATHY MOLITORISMusic is entertaining and fun, but it can also be an effective learning tool. Students at Donegal Primary School (DPS) experienced that firsthand this past year during an initiative called “Music Mondays with Mr. Matt.” For the program, singer-songwriter Matt Wheeler presented monthly videos featuring his original songs focused on social emotional learning
(SEL) vocabulary students were learning in class. Songs featured topics including exploring emotions, self-control and solving problems.
“I love listening to music, as I imagine you do, and I also love to make music,” Wheeler told students in his introductory video in September. “Music is a great way to express your thoughts and feelings, and also it’s simply fun!”
This is Wheeler’s fourth year
the results of what we recommended to our borough council to just be coming from our board of seven people,” he explained. “We want to seek community input. The park is used pretty heavily by our residents, so we wanted them to be involved in the process of telling us what they want this park to be.”
Hearing care is not only

The borough has hired a consultant, York-based YSM Landscape Architects, to prepare the master plan. Questions on the community survey, which is anonymous and brief, include input on the types of active and passive recreational opportunities people would like to see added to or improved upon at the park.
Currently, the park features walking paths, multiple pavilions that can be rented for birthday parties or other gatherings, a nine-hole disc golf course, a small children’s play area, charcoal grills and more. Several local churches routinely hold services in the park.
providing you with personalized support in any situation.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission as well as other local organizations stock trout in the creek that borders the park. Christian, who lives adjacent to the park, said he’s seen firsthand how much use the park gets. “It’s a great passive respite,” he said. “It’s quiet. It’s well-kept and maintained. It’s just a great, quiet little place within the boundaries of the nice little village of Mount Joy.”
Long-term plans for the area around the park include a stream bank revitalization project already in progress as well as a large-scale initiative that would lead to further park improvements, Christian said.
“This park is part of the Emerald Necklace plan, which is a circuitous hiking and biking trail all the way around the perimeter of Mount Joy,” he said. “That’s just a glimmer in everybody’s eyes at this point. However, there has been some talk recently here of maybe moving forward with the first phase, and the first phase could be Little Chiques Park.”
In the meantime, the committee members hope people will take a few minutes to complete the survey, said Alyssa Zevallos. “As a community member, this is your way to have influence on what we’re doing here,” she commented. “It’s not just the borough spending money on things. … We need to know what people are looking for. Otherwise, we might build something thinking this will be great, and the people will say, ‘We didn’t

offering the series. This year, he played videos he created for the series last year to reinforce SEL concepts and supplemented them with second videos. “In those second videos, I expanded on the ideas from the vocabulary and songs,” he said. “I played a bit of that month’s song and talked more about the SEL concept from that month.” For example, in March, the SEL topic was kindness, so Wheeler shared his song “All About Kindness” as a springboard for further discussion about the concept, including the ripple effect of kindness.
“As I put in that video, when you act with kindness toward another person, that makes them feel good and more likely to be kind
to another person,” he shared. “If enough people treat others with kindness, we could find life is just that much better for us all.”
Wheeler came on board as the DPS resident musician in the spring of 2021. “The artist residency started as a way of bringing the joy of music and song during the pandemic, and it succeeded beyond my expectations,” Wheeler commented. For the second year of the series, Wheeler included in-person assemblies at the end of the school year, and last year, he finished a complete set of SEL songs that the students could sing along to at the assemblies.
The “Music Mondays with Mr. Matt” series is funded by a grant from the Donegal Foundation.
“This organization provides
Donegal School District teachers with grants to support learning and Donegal School District students with scholarships for further education,” explained Taylor Morgan, DPS music teacher. “’Music Mondays with Mr. Matt’ adds another element to our social emotional learning curriculum. Matt provides students with a musical outlet to explore and control their emotions on a regular basis.”
Morgan noted that students’ enthusiasm for the series is evident in their excitement to watch the videos and participate in the endof-the-year assemblies.
And while teaching is a big part of the series, Wheeler said that excitement from the students is also important.
“When I think of the artist
residency, the word ‘joy’ keeps coming back to mind,” he said. “This is so much fun - for me, to be sure, but I think that the students, teachers and other school staff would agree on that point - while being constructive and complementary to the school’s important learning focus of social and emotional health. It feels like a win-win for everyone involved.”
Professionals warn aspiring cliff divers not to jump to conclusions
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDIn the ever-changing world of social media and the online landscape, new trends often take the country - and even the whole world - by storm. Nearly every American will groan at the mention of formerly
ubiquitous internet trends such as the “cinnamon challenge,” which encouraged thousands of people to try swallowing an entire spoonful of the potent spice without coughing. As always, the general public gradually loses interest in these trends to make room for whatever hot topic
will take its place. Most online trends are relatively harmless, but some of them, including the budding fad of rock and cliff diving, pose a serious risk to people who engage in them without taking the necessary precautions.
In recent weeks, various social media platforms have seen an increase of content depicting thrill seekers who enjoy plunging from the top of steep cliffs into rivers and other bodies of water. The precarious pastime has been safely practiced by trained professionals and extreme sportsmen for years, but the abrupt and widespread interest among teenagers and young adults has prompted many local school districts to issue a warning to Lancaster County residents interested in trying it out themselves. Due to the county’s
proximity to the Susquehanna River, which is easily accessible to areas such as Pequea, Washington Boro, Holtwood and Columbia, local medical professionals have made an effort to discourage attempts to practice cliff jumping in the area. Recently, some school administrators sent an email to students and their parents to highlight a few specific concerns, asserting “there is nothing remotely safe about cliff jumping or diving into the Susquehanna River.” Due to the presence of a hydroelectric dam in Safe Harbor, the river has an unpredictable variation in depth that poses a threat to any diver, and many submerged objects are not visible from high above the surface. Additionally, many people

their hands to drive their first car.
“Imagine for a moment that each person and experience that you’ve held onto up until this point has etched themselves into the palm and the fingers of your hand, creating a beautiful one-in-a-million kind of story that makes you who you are,” she said.
Kara Nissly was named salutatorian. She will attend William and Mary, participating in a joint degree program with the University of St Andrews in Scotland and majoring in history. “I would like to begin my address to you by talking about rocks,” she said, noting that many children, including herself, loved to collect all types of rocks when they were younger.
Her favorites, she said, were geodes. “From the outside, geodes do not appear to be anything special,”
she said. “They’re not shiny or sparkly. In order to determine if a rock might be a geode, you must be intentionally looking for one.” She urged her classmates to intentionally look for the good in life as they face the future. She also reminded her peers not to focus too much on the big picture, but instead, to look at the details, adding, “I challenge you to value the little moments, the in-between moments.”

believe jumping into water is entirely safe because of the cushion the water provides. According to the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) website, most cliff diving related injuries are associated with the water entry, and divers’ entry position plays a key role in how severely an individual can be injured. During a study conducted in 2013, NLM determined foot and ankle injuries as

the most common result of cliff diving, and more than 50% of injured divers entered the water feet first.
While you’re brainstorming fun activities to try out this summer, it may be wise to heed medical professionals’ warning and remember that the Susquehanna River isn’t known for its diving-friendly landscape - no matter how exciting the activity may seem online.
