Kara Nissly and Hannah Slobozien love to write. The recent Donegal High School graduates also love theater, and they put their passion for both subjects together when they entered plays they wrote in the Apollo Awards competition for high school theater students. Both girls earned nominations in this year’s Outstanding Playwright category.

Kara’s play, “The Unhappy Beginnings of Happy Endings,” told the story of an author in the 1950s who was struggling to get his novel published because it lacked a happy ending. Hannah’s play, “Writer’s Block,” was also about an author facing a challenge: coming up with an idea for a play.

“Her husband tells her to write about her own life, but she thinks that’s too boring,” Hannah said. “In the end, she realizes, ‘I do have a story to tell, and my story is important.’”

Kara’s play also has a positive message. “He decides to write a happy ending,” she shared. “He realizes that this particular story can have a happy ending even if it doesn’t mean his entire story has a happy ending.”

Kyle Hess has lived and breathed baseball since he was a young boy. Now the former Mount Joy resident is pursuing the sport professionally. After a brief stint playing with the Stormers, Hess has signed with a team affiliated with the Minnesota Twins.

Kyle’s first taste of the sport came through T-ball. “My dad asked me when I was real young if I wanted to play T-ball,” said the son of Jeff and Stacey Hess of Mount Joy. “I’ve been playing ever since.”

Hannah has written a play for the Apollo Awards all four years of high school, earning nominations her freshman and sophomore years in addition to this year. Kara earned an honorable mention nomination for a play she wrote last year as well as the nomination this year.

Hannah entered the competition as a freshman after receiving

To be entered in the Apollo Awards competition, each play must be written to be performed within 30 minutes as a one-act show, and it must include stage directions and sets that could realistically be created. The winning play is performed in a live reading in Hershey.

encouragement from Donegal teacher Audra Brackbill.

“She told me about this competition and I was like, ‘Oh, give me extra work to do!’” she said with a laugh. “I love to write, but I’d never written a play, but I liked theater, so I thought this would be cool to do something related to theater and writing.”

Kara entered the competition last year after encouragement from Hannah.

“She said, ‘You should write a play,’” Kara recalled. “I liked writing other genres, mostly poetry and fiction, but then I wrote a play my junior year, and I thought it was fun.”

Kara said she was especially happy that she and Hannah both received nominations this year.

“I didn’t want to be competing against Hannah,” she said. “I was going to feel really bad if I got nominated and she didn’t.”

A 2018 graduate of Donegal High School, Kyle was a standout baseball player. In 2015, his team won the district title. After high school, he played for five years at the University of Pittsburgh before joining the Stormers in Lancaster as an outfielder this past spring. With the Lancaster team, he led the Atlantic League through the season’s first 12 games with a batting average of .433. He also had hits - including three home runs - in all seven games he started, as well as 10 RBIs and two stolen bases. Despite only playing with the Stormers for a few weeks, he quickly grabbed the attention of Major League Baseball. The Twins

While he couldn’t have known those early days playing T-ball would lead to a path to the majors, Kyle said he won’t take the opportunity for granted.

Young musicians performed for their parents and friends, along with residents of Juniper Village, in a recital on May 4. The program was presented by the piano students of Carole A. Bubacz and a violin student of Jill Placeway at Juniper Village in Mount Joy. The student performers were Lucy Downing, Stewart Carter, Lindsey Shaud, Dominic Juarbe, and Sarah Heinz.

The program was divided into two parts, the first of which focused on imagery. Each student had prepared two or three pieces with titles that evoked images, and the students had spent time reflecting on how the composer had sought to create a picture using sounds. Some students had created stories based on their pieces.

Before each student played, Bubacz spoke about the pieces, and the student played excerpts that illustrated different elements of the image or story. The student then played the pieces in their entirety. The selections included “Whirlwind,” “The Planets,” “Clair de Lune,” “Sunrise,” “Square Dance,” “Teasing Song,” “In a Japanese Garden,” “Bridling,” “On the Blue Ridge,” and “Why Am I Blue?” In the second part of the program, the audience heard compositions by Kuhlau, Massenet, Bastien, and others. A folk song and a selection from “Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach” were included. The program ended with Sarah playing a violin solo accompanied by Bubacz.

Encore! Home School Productions cleans up at Apollo Awards

This past school year, students from the region took the stage in a play and a musical through Encore! Home School Productions. Their performances earned them nominations in the Apollo Awards, a program that recognizes high school theater students for their achievements. An award ceremony was held in May at The Hershey Theatre, and several Encore! students took home top honors.

“From our fall play, ‘The Curious Savage,’ and our spring musical, ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ we had a total of 10 nominations, and Encore!

won four awards,” said Caleb Steindel, a member of the board of directors and marketing lead for Encore! Brock Sunday won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play for Hannibal in “The Curious Savage.” Alice Tomasetti won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Play for Fairy May in “The Curious Savage,” and Encore! took home both Outstanding Play for “The Curious Savage” and Outstanding Musical for “The Wizard of Oz.”

Shore school districts as well. Encore! performed “The Wizard of Oz” in March at The Junction Center in Manheim.

Participating in the Apollo Awards provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the hard work of the performers, Steindel said.

Additional nominations for Encore! were MaryKate Kenny for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play as Mrs. Ethel Savage in “The Curious Savage” and for Outstanding Featured Performer in a Musical as Aunt Em in “The Wizard of Oz,” Josiah Evans for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play as Titus Savage in “The Curious Savage,” Ian Riethmiller for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical as Hunk/ Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz,” Alice Tomasetti for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical as Dorothy Gale in “The Wizard of Oz” and Outstanding Dance Number in a Musical for “The Jitterbug” in “The Wizard of Oz.”

Encore! performances feature students from throughout Lancaster, Dauphin and surrounding counties. Locally, Josiah Evans lives in the Elizabethtown Area School District and “The Wizard of Oz” featured students who live in Donegal, Columbia Borough, Lower Dauphin, Annville-Cleona, Camp Hill and West

“It’s important to validate the importance of the art form and how much it brings happiness to people,” he commented. “It’s also important because these kids dedicate time and effort for a project outside of normal school hours, and it’s lots of hard, excruciating work. They need to know that there is a lasting impact with this art form that stays with people beyond curtain call.”

Steindel said the students enjoyed interacting with other performers at the ceremony and seeing their peers recognized on stage.

“We love the Apollo Awards because they’re such a wonderful opportunity for us to meet and interact with other schools and celebrate their accomplishments,” he stated. “Encore! is grateful for these awards, but all the other schools did so incredibly well, too. (We are) grateful to be a part of this program, grateful for the all-volunteer team that makes up Encore! and grateful to God for giving us these talents with which to perform.”

Bringing the islands to the Lancaster Liederkranz

When Lancaster Liederkranz holds its annual Parrot Fest on Saturday, July 20, don’t expect a flock of birds. Instead, the event will feature “Margaritaville at the Liederkranz,” with food, beverages and live music providing an island vibe.

“Our first Parrot Fest was held in 2008, and one of the questions we got prior to the fest was a call from a lady looking for information on what kinds of parrots we were going to have and how many,” recalled Paul Stanavage, fest chairperson.

“So of course we told her we would have Parrothead fans, not parrots, but we would be throwing an island-themed party.”

“Parrotheads” is the term for Jimmy Buffett fans, people who love Buffett’s music and the island lifestyle.

Parrot Fest will run from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim.

Tropical Sunz will perform from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by headlining band Jimmy and the Parrots, which will play from 7 to 11 p.m.

“They are from the New Jersey area and were a Jimmy Buffett cover band when we met them at an Oktoberfest being held at a German restaurant in center city Philly called Ludwig’s,” Stanavage recalled, adding that the experience of seeing the band at an Oktoberfest event was unusual. Stanavage and his wife run a German Schuhplattler dance group called Alpenrose, and they were hired to dance at the Oktoberfest. Due to a scheduling conflict, no German bands were available, so the cover band stepped in.

“When we got there and saw there was a Buffett band playing, we were a tad surprised, to say the least,” Stanavage said. “But, they were really good and really entertaining. They played Buffett, and we did the German traditional stuff. We all had a great time.”

Stanavage stayed in touch with the band, and when he was looking for fundraiser ideas as then-president of the Liederkranz, he thought of Jimmy and the Parrots.

“They play a little trop-rock, Zac Brown, Bob Marley with plenty

of Buffett sprinkled in,” Stanavage shared. “They tell us they love playing for us because from the first song they play ‘til the end of the night, our dance floor is packed with people dancing and having fun.”

The club’s first Parrot Fest drew more than 800 people, and after a few years, the crowd had swelled to 1,500. That was just a few too many people, Stanavage said, so organizers have capped Parrot Fest at 1,000 tickets.

Along with live music, Parrot Fest will feature food, including hot dogs, hamburgers, “Cheeseburgers in Paradise,” pork barbecue sandwiches, jerk chicken, walking tacos, hand-cut french fries and vegan hot dogs and hamburgers. Food will be

Reading Railroad Days

planned

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will highlight the historic Reading Railroad during Reading Railroad Days on Wednesday to Saturday, July 3 to 6. Reading Railroad Days will take place during regular museum hours and is included in the regular museum admission.

A detailed HO-scale model train layout of the Reading Railroad, operated by members of the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society, is a centerpiece in the museum’s climate-controlled Rolling Stock Hall. Visitors also may view Reading Company equipment from the museum’s premier collection, including the 106-year-old tank engine No. 1251, multiple

unit car No. 800, Crusader observation car No. 1, and the 1928 turntable.

In its heyday, the Reading Company was a multifaceted industrial giant. Originally established as the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1833 to transport anthracite coal, the pioneering 94-mile line evolved into a large corporation serving eastern Pennsylvania as well as New Jersey and Delaware. Operations included coal mining, iron making, canal and sea-going transportation, and shipbuilding. With its complex of shops for locomotive and car building and repair, and constant advances in railroad technology, the company held a position of leadership in the railroad industry for

served from 5 to 9 p.m. A selection of German beers will be available on tap, along with a draft margarita wine and other beverages.

“The Lancaster Liederkranz offers a great venue just off 283 outside of Mount Joy along the scenic Chiques Creek,” Stanavage said, noting that Parrot Fest promises to be a fun evening out. “(There is) plenty of seating, a large dance floor, two great bands, food and drink.”

Stanavage encourages people to purchase tickets early for Parrot Fest. There is a discount for tickets purchased before Sunday, July 14. All tickets must be purchased in advance and may be purchased by searching for “Parrot Fest” on www.eventbrite.com.

Foundation supports local youth organizations

The Buffalo Wild Wings Foundation is dedicated to giving back to its communities across the country. Throughout 2024, it will donate more than $3 million to organizations that support various youth initiatives that help kids thrive, compete and belong to a team. Of the total donation amount, $1 million will go toward Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the remaining $2 million will support more than 300 local youth-serving nonprofits throughout the United States.

Locally, the Buffalo Wild Wings Foundation donated $1,800 to Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster; $3,225 to Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg; $400 to Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Harrisburg; and $2,000 to Junior Achievement of South Central Pennsylvania Inc., York.

The summer is a crucial time for children and communities - a time when they need additional resources as school is not in session. Guests can help support their communities this summer, and throughout the year, by purchasing sauce bottles at their local Buffalo Wild Wings. A portion of the proceeds from every sauce bottle purchased will benefit the Buffalo Wild Wings Foundation.

To learn more about the work of the Buffalo Wild Wings Foundation, visit www.foundation.buffalo wildwings.com.
