Dog Days will feature shopping, music and more

Bring your family - and your pup - to Grandview Vineyard on Saturday, July 13, for food, music, shopping and more. Dog Days of Summer Sip & Shop Event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the vineyard, 1489 Grandview Road, Mount Joy.

“We currently have 63 vendors who will be setting up booths to promote their businesses,” said Christina Warfel of Utterly Simple Events, which is organizing the event at Grandview. “We also have two food trucks as well as an ice cream truck.” Grandview wine will also be available for purchase.

Jaded, an acoustic duo featuring Rebecca Jade and Ed Krepps, will perform live music from noon to 2:30 p.m., and additional entertainment will include appearances by Waffle Dog and Shaggy, Scooby-Doo characters who will stroll throughout the venue. A free activity for kids will also be featured.

Vendors will include Karri’s Creations, Opal & Silk, Utterly Simple Creations, Happy Pawz Bakery, Fetch! Pet Care, Mary Kay, Tastefully Simple, Cupcakes with a Kick! and more.

Warfel began hosting outdoor events like this during the start of the pandemic. Her first event happened in October of 2020. “The community response was so overwhelming,” she recalled. “From there, we have grown and added new elements to the events each year.” She has held events in Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon and Perry counties, but this will be her first event in Lancaster County.

The event is a fundraiser for the Delaware Valley Golden

Retriever Rescue. “With this being not only our first event in Lancaster County but also at this venue, I asked the owner of the winery to select the organization,” Warfel shared, noting that people from the rescue will be present with some adoptable dogs. “The majority of the vendors have been kind enough to donate items to be (given away), with all of the money raised going directly to the rescue. We have also advertised the wish/ needs list of the rescue as well for those who would like to donate items directly to them.”

Warfel said the event promises to be a fun summer day out. “There is free parking and

free admission as well as the free entertainment,” she said.

“People are more than welcome to bring a blanket and enjoy the day in the grass watching the band. … There will be some games and surprises throughout the event that for the meantime will remain a secret!”

Dogs may attend the event with their owners, but dogs must be leashed, cleaned up after and well-behaved. If it rains, the event will be rescheduled with the rain date to be announced.

Head to Paramount Senior Living, 2760 Maytown Road, Maytown, on Wednesday, July 17, for a car show to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

Registration will begin at 5 p.m., and the event will start at 6 p.m.

“We love to host community events where the whole family can come out to do something

fun together,” said Cindy Wivell, marketing manager for Paramount Senior Living. “Paramount has held car shows here in the past, but this will be the first one in a long time.”

Any type of car is eligible to participate in the show. “This event is for the enjoyment of our residents that were primarily born in the late ’20s to the ’40s, so antiques will be appreciated

One of the five human senses, hearing is something that can be easily taken for granted. But for those who can’t hear, there’s an element of appreciation that inspires creativity, ingenuity and a manifestation of the human spirit.

Through a wealth of services and resources, the Lancaster Center of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (LCDHH), located at 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, which is a subsidiary

of and overseen by Keystone Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services (KDHHS) of Reading, helps individuals with hearing loss learn to listen, communicate better and generally lead fuller lives.

LCDHH client services manager and language specialist Karen Pfortsch, who has been deaf since birth, was interviewed for this article with the help of sign language interpreter Kandy Reyes, KDHHS’ president.

“Deaf individuals are happy being deaf,” said Pfortsch. “We can do everything except hear.

Giant, customers raise money for initiative

Through its Healing Our Planet initiative, the Giant Company announced on June 27 that it raised $403,360 in partnership with its customers to support Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and Planet Bee Foundation. During the month of May, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores were invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar to support each organization.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, in partnership with the Giant Company, announced it will award grants to local community organizations for tree plantings across Pennsylvania, and funds will support Pick Up Pennsylvania and local cleanup, recycling and greening events.

Planet Bee Foundation drives awareness for pollinators and the importance of bees as a pathway to STEM, conservation and innovations in agriculture. Funding raised by the Giant Company will support local beekeepers, research programs and school and community programs.

Giant’s Healing Our Planet campaign has raised more than $6 million over the past four years. For more information on the Healing Our Planet initiative, visit www.giantfoodstores.com/pages/ our-purpose.

by many of them,” Wivell shared.

“However, the more cars that enter, the more enjoyable the event will be for everyone. We are offering trophies and bragging rights for Best Car, Best Truck, Best Paint, Resident Choice and People’s Choice.”

Registration of a car is by donation, and the public is invited to attend the event for free. Handdipped ice cream will be offered alongside a make-your-own sundae bar.

“Attendees are also encouraged

to come hungry and patronize the local food Spud Muffin truck that will be on-site,” Wivell said. “Spud Muffin is owned and operated by a father-daughter duo in Marietta.”

Proceeds from donations will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, an organization Paramount has supported for years.

“Paramount Senior Living is a personal care residence that offers assisted living services to seniors that may have physical and/or cognitive impairments that limit their ability to live independently,”

Wivell commented. The senior living facility hosts a team annually in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, she said, adding, “The Alzheimer’s Association is an organization that is focused on funding research to end Alzheimer’s disease while also being a multifaceted resource and support to those impacted by the disease through education, care and advocacy.”

Wivell invites everyone to enter the car show, noting that older cars are especially appreciated. “We would love to attract show-worthy

Presentation to focus on Quakers

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Ernest Schreiber as guest speaker at its meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 15, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. His program is titled “The Forgotten History of Quakers in Lancaster County.”

Schreiber will examine the arrival of Quaker missionaries in the area in 1658 and the eventual construction of the modern day Friends Meeting House in 1954. He will discuss Quaker involvement in the Revolutionary War, the slave trade and resulting abolitionist movement, the Civil War, Prohibition, and both world wars.

Schreiber was a reporter for the Lancaster New Era for 27 years and its editor for 10 years. He is a co-founder of Respect Farmland, an adviser to the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, part of the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy, and a member of the Lancaster Meeting and the Religious Society of Friends. Schreiber graduated from Millersville University and the University of Pennsylvania. He is a resident of Lancaster Township. The ancestral

home of his mother’s family - the Mummas - was a pair of farms at Rock Point and Colebrook roads east of Maytown. The event is free and open to the

public. Refreshments will follow the program.

The historical society building is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Community

cars of all ages,” she said, “but if we could get some cars from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, that would really thrill our residents.”

Paramount is hoping to offer music from a DJ at the car show. Interested parties may call Wivell at 717-405-1930. Preregistration is required for all car entries and may be made up until the event by calling 717-426-0033. Registered participants will enter the grounds from the Maytown Road entrance while spectators will enter from Enslow Road.

members may conduct research and view the displays of Mount Joy memorabilia. For more information about the historical society, visit www.mountjoyhistory.com.

Old-fashioned fun will be in the spotlight when Ruhl’s Church hosts its annual community picnic. The fun will take place at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim, on Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Our church picnic is a long-standing tradition that started over 100 years ago,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the picnic planning committee. “We feel that it is important to honor the traditions of generations gone by. It is our hope that our church and community will embrace this tradition and that it will continue on for many years to come.”

The picnic will feature homemade chicken corn soup, following a recipe that has been used for generations. Takeout soup sales will begin at 9 a.m., and people are encouraged to bring their own container or buy the soup by the quart.

A full lunch menu will also be offered, including soup, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, hot sausage sandwiches, homemade desserts and beverages.

“There is space to enjoy lunch either at picnic tables under the trees outside or inside the pavilion,” Ruhl said, adding that a playground is also on-site.

In addition to the picnic, the church will host worship services in the grove on Sundays from July 14 through Aug. 18.

“We will gather each night for a time of gospel music, worship, Bible-based messages and great fellowship for all ages,” Ruhl shared. “All are welcome.” Speakers will be the Rev. Blaine Wenger on July 14, pastor Tim Fray on July

21, the Rev. Rob Timlin on July 28, Seth Achey on Aug. 4, the Rev. Rick Rimert on Aug. 11 and the Rev. Joe DiPaolo on Aug. 18.

Ruhl’s Church will host vacation Bible school (VBS) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 29, through Thursday, Aug. 1, with a theme of “Everest: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power.” VBS is open to children age 4 through fourth grade.

Ruhl hopes people will make time to attend the picnic or other church activities, noting that all activities offer opportunities for fellowship.

“Our annual church picnic is a way to reconnect with friends and meet new people in a casual environment,” she said. “Grove services are a way to step back in time and worship as our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents used to.”

For more information on upcoming events at Ruhl’s Church, visit www.ruhlschurch.org or call 717-665-3400.

We can drive; we can work. American Sign Language is a beautiful language. What’s important to us is our eyes and being able to see.”

At LCDHH, individuals with hearing loss and their family members are directly and indirectly connected with services like sign language interpreters, sign language education, hearing aids, speech therapy, amplifiers, closed caption video phones, doorbell signalers, smoke and fire alarms, workshops, community activities and social events.

People who are deaf or hard of hearing also employ lip reading, facial expressions and body language as ways to receive communications, but they are more informal and learned skills that are often less accurate than sign language.

“The goal is barrier-free services and community access,” said Pfortsch. “Our goal is to empower our clients with whatever services

are needed. It’s like a one-stop shop. When a person comes in here, they need to discuss their needs with us. Some might be looking for a job, and we’ll connect them with employment agencies. Some people might be struggling with reading. Some people have limited language skills. Some might need to know how to get their pensions. We’ll get them connected to the right people. There are a variety of things we’ll do to get them help, and sometimes we do advocacy.”

LCDHH serves about 300 clients on a regular basis. According to numbers from a recent census, approximately 80,000 Lancaster County residents have some sort of hearing loss.

“We are only scratching the surface,” said Pfortsch. “Some people have a mindset about deaf people from what they’ve seen on TV. They label all deaf people as ignorant.

We have to work to prove ourselves because it’s considered a disability. But deaf people don’t think they’re disabled.”

KDHHS employs a total of 10 individuals, two of whom work out of the LCDHH office. LCDHH is a nonprofit that receives funding from donations, grants and fees from its interpreter services.

“We are known in the deaf and hard of hearing community,” said

Child heatstroke prevention tips

As the weather gets warmer, the Municipal Emergency Services Authority of Lancaster County (MESA) reminds parents and caregivers to not leave children in hot cars. Vehicle-related heatstroke is one of the leading causes of non-crash, vehicle-related death for children age 14 and younger in the United States. A busy parent or caregiver may unintentionally forget that a quiet or sleeping child is in the back of the vehicle. These deaths can even occur at home.

Internal vehicle temperatures can rise quickly and become up to

50 degrees warmer than outside air temperatures. So even if it is a cool day outside, a vehicle may still pose a threat to a child. A child’s body temperature increases three to five times faster than an adult’s.

Parents and caregivers should form a habit of looking in the back seat every time they get out of a car. They should never leave a child in a vehicle unattended, even for a minute, and they should always lock the car and put the keys out of reach of children.

Warning signs of heatstroke include red, hot, and moist or dry skin;

no sweating; a strong, rapid pulse or a slow, weak pulse; nausea; confusion; or strange behavior. If a child exhibits any of these signs after being in a hot vehicle, the caregiver should call 911 or a local emergency number immediately. They should also quickly spray the child with cool water or with a garden hose. They should never put a child in an ice bath.

MESA provides 911 emergency medical services previously provided by Northwest EMS to member municipalities in northwest Lancaster County. More information is available at www.mesalancasterpa.gov.
