REYS - now RAISE28will host carnival and backpack giveaway
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The name sounds similar, and the vision is the same, but big changes are happening at a youth center in Mount Joy. Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) has become RAISE28, and the nonprofit has also updated its mission statement.
“Our mission statement is now more concise: to reach local youth with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Mark Unger, who became executive director in February.
The rebrand began under
former executive director Cristina Paden. “She had the vision to make this happen,” Unger shared. “This was Cristina’s work and the board’s work. I just had the opportunity to be the one that rolls it all out.”
RAISE28 takes its name from biblical origins. “‘Raise’ lets us think of Jesus being raised from the dead and ‘28’ comes from Matthew 28:19: ‘Go and make disciples of all nations,’” Unger explained.
Although the name and mission statement are new, the core values of the organization are unchanged.
“The heart of what we do isn’t changing at all,” Unger said. “We’re still primarily known as an after-school program for kids in the area.” RAISE28 serves students in grades one through 12 in Donegal School District as well as students from other local school districts.
Programming is offered Mondays through Fridays and includes free meals for students. Martial arts and music lessons are also offered.
Each year, the organization hosts a backpack giveaway, providing bags filled with schools supplies to local students. “Last

A quarter century ago, soon after the Milanof-Schock Library moved to its current location, a group of people got together to share their love of books and their support for the library. As the Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library marks its 25th anniversary, the
group invites all present and past Friends to a reunion. The event will be held at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, on Monday, Aug. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Spend time together with community members and first responders when Voyage Mount Joy hosts National Night Out.
The event will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Delta Street, directly across from the Mount Joy Borough office building.
“This is an amazing event and opportunity for the entire Mount Joy community to meet and learn more about the first responders that work tirelessly
to keep us all safe every day,” said Allory Melhorn, event director for Voyage Mount Joy.
“They can meet members of the Mount Joy police force, fire department, EMTs and others, as well as learning more about important first aid techniques and exploring some of their equipment that gets used during an emergency.”
Mount Joy’s National Night Out event will also include live music by Barkley Cove, a dunk tank, a bounce house and a kids’ painting area for families to enjoy.

The Mount Joy fire department will have a fire truck. Life Lion will have an ambulance, and the PA Fish and Boat Commission will have a boat. A tow truck will also be present all for kids and families to discover and check out up close.”
Held annually on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out began in 1984 as a way to bring police and community members together. Group takes backpacking trip
Glossbrenner United Methodist Church held its second Glossbrenner Experiential, Adventure, Responsible - Unique Pursuits/Department of Experiential Education Programming (GEAR-UP/DEEP) backpacking trip from May 1 to 4.
The participants were Eric Boyer, David Eichler, Andrew Miller, and Jordan York, who was the first Glossbrenner Church youth member to go on the trip. Eric, Eichler, and Miller all attended the inaugural GEAR-UP/
PUBLIC AUCTION
DEEP trip in July 2023, along with Alex Boyer and Glossbrenner members Pat and Steve Spence.
The group honed its land navigation skills on multiple trails, including the Black Forest Trail, which runs through parts of Lycoming, Clinton, Potter, and Tioga counties and is 42 miles in length. During their two and a half days of backpacking, the group covered approximately 10 miles in the area known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, which features steep ascents and descents. Participants camped along the trail for two nights, with the third night spent at the Black Forest Inn near Slate Run.
Skills learned during the trip included packing and fitting a backpack, using a topographic map, understanding one’s individual
physical condition, filtering and chemically treating water, cooking using camp stoves, tying knots and hitches for tarp construction, keeping a sleeping area dry and warm, and rigging a food hang to protect provisions from animals. Leave No Trace practices were used when brushing teeth and cleaning cooking implements.
As they did last year, participants read portions of “The Upper Room” and Scripture passages. Additionally, on the first night, York offered a nature-related quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, which he found in the North Carolina Outward Bound School’s “Book of Readings.” Of particular significance were the readings for the second day of the trip; the theme was “Source of Strength,” and participants read Joshua 1:1-9,

in which Joshua is charged with leading the Israelites. It was on the second day of the trip that the crew experienced significant uphill travel. York noted that his greatest accomplishment on the excursion was learning to read a map and use a compass. He also discovered that he could walk long distances carrying an approximately 45-pound backpack, beginning when the group traversed roughly 5 mountainous miles on the first day of the trek. One particularly difficult section was the lengthy, uphill Gas Line Trail. Additional frustration occurred for York on the second day, when he was tasked with navigating and become temporarily disoriented. With some instructor intervention, he corrected his course and soon led the crew onto the correct trail.

The Back to School Blastoff will be held on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16 and 17, at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy. It will feature silent auctions, food and drinks, live music, giveaways, a car show and more. On Friday, the carnival will run from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday’s hours will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Backpack pickup will occur from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. People are encouraged to contact RAISE28 by Friday, Aug. 9, to register for a backpack. Friends of Donegal will provide information about Power Packs for eligible families as well.
DJ Stan Tucker will provide music on Aug. 16, and Matt Wheeler will entertain on Aug. 17. The carnival will include rides and a celebrity dunk tank, with local dignitaries including state Rep. Tom Jones taking the plunge. Friday’s food truck lineup will feature Spud Muffin and Cupcakes by Casey. On Saturday, Kona Ice and Spud Muffin will be on-site.
“Our goal is to raise $40,000 through the carnival,” Unger said. “Money raised helps provide funds for our programming and pays for our five staff members’ salaries.” Founded in 1982 as Rainbow’s End Youth Center, RAISE28 fills a need in the community, Unger stated. “A lot of kids we serve need a place to go to connect, and we provide that,” he said. “We have three types of programming: academic support like homework help or teaching study skills; social support, including helping kids make friends or get referrals to community resources such as the food bank, clothing bank or mental health services; and the third type of programming is the spiritual connection, teaching about the God that’s in the Bible.” RAISE28 relies on support from community members, organizations, businesses and churches, Unger said. “It’s the community that makes this work,” he noted. “If it wasn’t for help from the community, we wouldn’t exist.” For more information on RAISE28 or to register for a backpack, visit https://reys.org/ events.
Reunion
by the members will also be on display.
“We have those going back to the start of the Friends,” Summers shared. “We invite people to look at those, reminisce and socialize.”
The library moved to its current home in February of 1999, and the Friends group incorporated in August of that same year, stated Joyce Hershey, who was the first president of the group.
“We started out with five people who were the officers,” Hershey recalled. “Maureen Albert, who was on the board of the library at the time, was a big help in getting the Friends started. She and I really worked together.” Along with Hershey, the original officers were vice president Gail Merchant, secretary Kim Beach,
treasurer Tracey Buller and public relations officer Donna Little.
Over the years, the Friends group has grown significantly, and it now includes about 20 active members. The group has supported the library with fundraisers including antique appraisals, bake sales and a bookstore. A monthly silent auction features items donated by Friends of the library that are displayed in a case in the lobby, and the Friends group hosts an annual book sale in the spring.
This year’s sale, held in June at Donegal High School, was its most successful to date. The group had a lofty goal in mind - presenting a check for $25,000 to the library to celebrate the 25th anniversary. They not only reached that goal,
but also surpassed it, raising just over $26,000. With that amount, the Friends group has donated a total of more than half a million dollars to the library, Summers said.
Pulling off a large fundraiser like the book sale is a team effort, said Friends member Diane Rice.
“We want to thank Donegal High School and the custodial staff,” she stated. “We want to thank the Rotary Club and John Coleman, who brought in kids from Donegal Performing Arts to help move boxes and set up the sale.”
JB Hostetter and Sons donated tables for the book sale, and the library board supported the sale with donations of concessions.
“We also had many volunteers from the community who came

in and put books out and manned the tables,” Rice said. “We really appreciate everyone who helped.” Summers invites anyone who has been a part of the Friends group to come to the reunion. “Come meet old and new Friends and see what we’re doing now,” she said. “You can look at the scrapbooks and see there are so many things the Friends have done over the years to raise money for the library, which we all know provides such a good community resource for lots of things beyond books.”
The Friends reunion will be part of a weeklong birthday bash at the library. To register for the reunion, contact Kim Beach at 717-725-5124 or mslfriends99@ gmail.com. For more information, visit https://mslibrary.org.
