Country Fair And Market Has Something For Everyone BY CATHY MOLITORIS
et ready for some fun, fellowship and really great food. According to Marcia Brooks, that’s what you’ll find at the annual Country Fair and Market held at Glossbrenner United Methodist Church, 713 Church St., Mount Joy. This year’s event will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6. On Friday, a potpie dinner will be served, featuring chicken potpie with coleslaw, applesauce, a roll and water. Meals will be available to eat in house or for takeout. “This is homemade, Lancaster County potpie,” said Brooks. “We get a lot of great comments on it. It’s delicious.” On Saturday, food options will include hot dogs and homemade macaroni and cheese, along with chips and soda. A free hot dog will be offered to all children age 10 and
members and are available for purchase by donation. The Country Fair and Market is a project of the Caring Hands and Hearts outreach committee at the church. “Our mission is to help anybody in need, whether they are a member of our church or a member of our community,” Davis explained. Proceeds from the event will benefit the church’s kitchen fund and will go toward the purchase of a new stove. Davis said the Country Fair and Market offers a way not only to raise money for the church but also to help people connect with one another. “We will have tables set up for eating, but you can also just come in and sit and chat and enjoy the fellowship,” she said. “Everyone is welcome.” For more information on the Country Fair and Market, visit www.gumcmj.net or call the church at 717-653-5683.

“Messiah” To Be Performed In Concert BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Tom Berdos was growing up, he remembers hearing Handel’s “Messiah” during the holidays. “My parents often had it playing in the house, so I’ve always associated it with Christmas,” said the director of music at Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy. “I always wanted to conduct it, so finally I said, ‘Why not?’”

under. Homemade baked goods, prepared by church members, will be for sale as well. On both days, a craft show will feature items made by a committee of church members, who work on creating inventory year-round for the event. “We have a lot of fall and Christmas items,” Brooks noted. “We also have a lot of useful household items like tea towels, scrubbies and dishcloths.” Additional crafts for sale will include wreaths, snowman and other holiday décor, crocheted doll dresses and paintings by a local artist. Rounding out the activities at the event will be a yard sale, featuring a wide variety of gently used items, said Emmajane Davis. “There is something for everyone,” she noted. “We have clothing for all sizes, plus purses, shoes, kitchen items and household items.” All yard sale items are donated by church members or friends and family of church

“There’s a lot going on along this trail,” said Jeri Jones, describing the 14-mile Northwest Lancaster County River Trail as it runs from Columbia to Falmouth. “There are so many cool things to see.” Jones combined his knowledge of the trail and his passion for geology to write “Geologic Guide to the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.” The book, which was published in 2020, provides an overview of 26 stops along the trail, beginning at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and ending at the Falmouth boat launch. “There is no geological knowledge required to enjoy this book,” Jones stated, noting that the book begins with what he calls “River Trail Geology 101,” which introduces readers to types of rocks and geologic features such as faults and folds. “I know people who like to carry this book on the trail with them. It’s a tool to enhance their trail walk and give them a purpose while they’re on the trail.” The book was made possible with support from three sponsors Susquehanna National Heritage Area, Jones Geological Services (Jones’ Spring Grove-based business) and Rivertownes PA USA. Although it only came out last year, the book has sold well, Jones said, and it’s already in its third printing. The idea for the book came from Jones’ own experience along the trail. “I’m an educational geologist, and I used to take field trips to the Chickies Rock area,” he explained. “I wanted to share my knowledge of the area with people.” Chickies Rock is especially significant in geologic terms, he noted, because the outcrop is a classic example of an “anticline,” or a folded arch. “This is really the best example of this in the mid-Atlantic states,” Jones noted, adding that student groups from colleges throughout the region come to Lancaster County to study the site. A fossil known as skolithos was also discovered in the Chickies Rock area, he said. Jones had been thinking about writing the book for years, but when he retired from the York County Department of Parks and Recreation in 2017, he finally got to work on it. “I decided, ‘This needs to get done,’” he said. “I made it a priority.” Along with Chickies Rock, the book highlights the Haldeman Mansion, the Musselman-Vesta Furnace, Shocks Mills railroad bridge and the White Cliffs of Conoy. In his 40 years of geologic research, Jones has written several other books, and he said his next project might be revisiting a topic he’s covered in the past - where to pan for gold in southeastern Pennsylvania.
In the meantime, he invites people to pick up a copy of his river trail book and hit the trail. The book is available for sale at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., and the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. It is also available by contacting Jones at jonesgeo@comcast.net or 717-887-7103.

cannot operate without the service of volunteers. “I need a minimum of 70 volunteers each week,” Raffensperger noted. Volunteers can help with anything from checking people in or out to serving meals, cleaning or providing overnight supervision. Intake for the emergency shelter will begin on Monday, Dec. 6. The shelter season will run through Friday, April 1, 2022. “We know that homelessness doesn’t end after April 1, of course,” Anderson said, noting that the longterm goal of ECHOS is to open a year-round shelter. “For now, we’re just trying to serve the most people who have the greatest need for our services.” For more information on the ECHOS emergency shelter, visit https://echoslancaster.org.

The new shelter has also eliminated bunk beds in favor of single beds, making each bed more accessible to guests, and also features multiple electrical outlets for people to charge their devices. Lockers will be provided as well for guests to store items during the day when they may be at a job or other appointments. A new commercial kitchen will allow for easier prep and service of meals, with more room for guests to eat and socialize. The new site also features two commercial washers and dryers, allowing volunteers to do laundry on site for the first time. A small de-escalation room will provide space for guests to get away from the general population if necessary, and an expanded room for overnight volunteers has also been added. On the main floor of the new building, an enrichment center offers access to job and community resources as well as the opportunity to work with a case manager. In early 2022, six apartments will open in the building as well. The new site couldn’t have been ready at a better time, Anderson said. “We are anticipating this year to be our most full year,” she stated. “We’ve seen an increase every year in the amount of shelter guests we’ve served.” The ECHOS emergency shelter is a low-barrier shelter, Raffensperger explained, meaning there are minimal requirements to be eligible to use it. The shelter is open to anyone from or with connections to the area ECHOS serves - Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Rheems, Marietta, Mount Joy and Maytown. Both Anderson and Raffensperger stress, however, that the shelter

Donegal Football Earns First League Win
BY LEAH SINTIC
The Indians picked up their first league triumph on a road trip to Ephrata on October 15th, outpacing the Mountaineers 35-27. After a scoreless opening quarter, Donegal made some adjustments and the offensive line opened up pathways for Noah Rohrer (140 rushing yards) to run the ball into the endzone three times. When the running game was not optimal, Donegal quarter back Landen Baughman threw 127 yards finding Ian Brown for a pair of
touchdown passes, 52 and 33 yards, respectively. “We had to adjust a little bit to how they were playing us,” commented coach Chad Risberg. “We took what the defense was giving us.” When it came to the Indians’ turn on defense Rohrer (10 tackles), and Baughman (two interceptions), once again came up big. Rohrer also punctuated three TDs with successful PATs. The momentum-boosting victory came after a tough 55-0 setback the previous week on a trip to Lampeter-Strasburg.

“The kids showed a lot of character after that loss,” acknowledged Risberg. “It was a great team win.” FIELD HOCKEY The Lady Indians suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Manheim Township in the semifinal round of the L-L League Tournament last Tuesday, October 19th. Neither team was able to connect with the back of the cage in the first three quarters of the showdown held at Donegal, despite a barrage of 15 shots from the Township offense. Donegal keeper CC Emswiler came up big with 14 saves, but Township was able to slip one in early in the fourth. The Tribe provided a dramatic entrance to that semi-final contest, earning their 2-1 victory over Lancaster Mennonite after a 1-1 stalemate forced a shootout, which went Donegal’s direction by a count of 31 on October 16th. Emswiler was the hero of the day forcing one Mennonite shot wide and making stops on another two
on the way to the 3-1 tally, in addition to five saves in regulation. “CC played amazing in goal and was confident going into shoot outs,” praised head coach Gina Allessie. Netting the three Donegal successes in their one-v-one showdowns were Reagan Clark, Marie Gehman, and Grace Dickinson. “It was a great team effort,” celebrated Allessie. Regulation saw just one goal apiece from the dualling teams, and both goals were netted in the second quarter. Gehman got the job done for Donegal on a penalty stroke, but Mennonite answered minutes later, and the score remained deadlock until time expired. Double overtime was no more successful in determining a victor despite a game total of 16 corner opportunities for the Indians and seven for the Blazers. Marleigh Ballard crossed in 32nd and Addison Houck secured 37th. The squad’s combined efforts earned them fifth place team honors and a ticket to the District Championship. “All the girls ran great,” encouraged head coach Philip Koser. “Going into the meet, we talked about running as close to 100 percent of their fitness level as possible, and to be confident and patient in the first mile.” Sam Rothstein produced a standout 12th place finish out of 174 harriers in the boys’ race. The senior’s time of 17:11.7 was Donegal’s best of the day. “Sam had a great race. John Spackman took 77th with a time of 18:48.9. Collectively, the boys grabbed an eighth-place finish, and took third of the participating 2A teams earning them a spot at the upcoming 2A District Championships. “The boys eighth place finish out of 24 teams was outstanding,” Koser added. “We are now ready to gear up for the District Championships.” BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer club earned their way into the L-L League playoffs after an 8-2 regular season but were bumped out of the tournament in by a 2-0 loss to Hempfield on October 16. “We played hard against Hempfield,” noted head coach Andrew Wagner. “Hempfield is a very experienced team and can handle the ball very well. We have to get more possession in order to be effective.” Though their L-L playoff run ended, the squad will get another opportunity to demonstrate their improvement in the PIAA District III playoff bracket. “We have a lot of experienced players, and they will respond to the challenge,” summarized Wagner.

“The first year I conducted it was a learning experience,” Berdos said, “but we got through it. It’s not the easiest to conduct.” Despite the rigor of conducting such a challenging piece, Berdos doesn’t envision stopping any time soon. “I do this for the glory of God,” he stated. “And it also gives people in the community the opportunity to sing this wonderful piece of music as part of the chorus or to enjoy it as part of the audience.” For more information on the concert or to order tickets, call the “Messiah” ticket line at 717-742-5254 or email ccmusic.tom@gmail.com.

Yovanovich, tenor Brian Ernstes and bass Justin Beck. Berdos, who became director of music at Chiques UMC in June, is joined in rehearsals by his wife, Deborah, who is the church organist. She’ll also sing soprano in the concert.
