The inaugural Plastic Purge of the Lower Susquehanna, a cleanup event around Lake Clarke on the Susquehanna River, will take place on Saturdays, Oct. 31 and Nov. 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and its partners, including the Penn State Master Watershed Stewards of York, Lancaster, Lebanon, and Dauphin counties; the Watershed Alliance of York; and the York County Coalition for Clean Waters.
This large-scale cleanup will take place around Lake Clarke on the Susquehanna River on both sides of the river and everywhere in between. Plastics, tires, litter, and other debris continue to get flushed into the Susquehanna River from the lake, and the cleanup will help protect downstream neighbors and aquatic and avian species.
Registration is required. Registration tables and trash containers will be available at the Lock 2 lower boat ramp on Fishing Creek Road, Wrightsville, and Susquehanna Boat Works, 516 Boathouse Road, Wrightsville. Personal flotation devices are mandatory for any volunteers on the river.
To learn more and to register, readers may visit www.eventbrite.com. For details, readers may contact Ted at 717-478-1780 or lowsus river@hotmail.com or Jeff at 717-495-2015 or jdmiller89@ gmail.com.

Veterans frompg 1 to honor our area veterans through this program,” said Randy Wolgemuth, president of the Rotary Club of Mount Joy. “Thank you, veterans.”
While the club traditionally offers a free breakfast buffet for veterans, changes were made this year to promote safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although the format of this year’s meal has changed from previous years, it was still important to the club to recognize veterans, said Barbara Basile, public relations chair for the club..
“We wanted to make sure our veterans were still honored, but in a safer manner this year,” she explained.
The lunch will include roasted turkey, filling, mashed potatoes and dessert. Food will be prepared by The Gathering Place with funding from the Mount Joy Rotary.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently posted guidance for holidays, including Halloween. The federal agency encourages people to avoid higher-risk activities, including door-todoor trick-or-treating; attending crowded, indoor costume parties; visiting indoor haunted houses; or going on hayrides or tractor rides with strangers. Local residents are invited to create new traditions that still allow families to spend time together and make memories. Jill Walls, an associate professor of early childhood, youth, and family studies at Ball State University, suggests that families watch an age-appropriate, Halloween-themed movie together; make a Halloween craft; play board games, bake holiday-themed food; or read a Halloween- or fall-themed book aloud.
Families may also want to “visit” friends in costume via Zoom or other online video platforms. Additionally, parents can set up candy bowls in various rooms of their home and have children trick-ortreat around the house or apartment.
Residents in communities that are taking part in trick-ortreating are encouraged to place wrapped candy outside their homes in open bowls, instead of handing it out.
