A Sanctuary For Fur Buddies BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The historical society began in a one-room schoolhouse that dates to the 1860s.

Mad About Marietta BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Marietta means everything to Rebecca Carroll Baltozer. “I am an eighth generation Marietta resident,” she said. “I grew up in Marietta.” She’s taking her knowledge and love of the town with her in her new role as mayor of Marietta. She was elected in November and began her term on Jan. 3. Running for mayor was a natural choice, Baltozer stated, noting that her past involvement with community organizations includes serving as president and treasurer of Marietta

Throughout the rooms of the historical society, displays feature a look into the Elizabethtown of yesteryear. There are memorabilia from mills, churches, railroads, shoe factories and snack food companies. “We have an extensive collection of military history,” Kaley noted, adding that the society has records on veterans going back to the Revolutionary War. “We have handwritten deeds dating to the 1700s.” Wheelbarrows and other equipment from Buch Wheelbarrows are featured as well. “There was an amazing amount of craftspeople in this community,” Kaley remarked. “This town has an enormous, rich and deep history.” A small bookstore features books, artwork and DVDs about Elizabethtown. Currently, Kaley is cataloging all of the museum’s contents by hand, and it’s a time-consuming and tedious process. Every donation needs to be recorded and properly stored, including stacks of photographs, cabinets of books and piles of papers. She encourages anyone with an interest in history to consider joining the historical society as a member or donating time to help. “The historical society has a wealth of information and history for people to enjoy,” she stated. “Everything that’s here is part of why this community exists today.” For more information on the Elizabethtown Historical Society or to volunteer, send a message through the society’s Facebook page or visit https://etownhistory.com.
It’s hard to have an uninterrupted conversation with Lynn LeachYates. There’s always a furry head to pat, a chin to scratch or a belly to rub. And of course, there’s the barking - lots and lots of barking. And Leach-Yates wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s the founder of 2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue, 737 Taylor Road, Windsor. The nonprofit provides homes for cats and dogs looking to be fostered or adopted. The Rescue Ranch on the property is a sanctuary for senior and medically needy
dogs and cats that can live out their lives under the love and care of Leach-Yates and volunteers. Leach-Yates didn’t start out wanting to own and operate a rescue. An Elizabethtown-based real estate agent, she saw firsthand the positive effects pets can bring to people’s lives. When Leach-Yates’ brother died suddenly 15 years ago, it was a puppy that saved his wife’s life, Leach-Yates said. She noticed an immediate transformation when she introduced her sister-in-law to the dog. “It was really an ‘aha’ moment for me about how much animals can change our lives,” she said.

Prior to assuming her role of mayor, she served on the Marietta Borough Council, and she just co-chaired the 55th Candlelight Tour in December, which drew more than 1,200 people to Marietta. As mayor, Baltozer hopes to focus on diversity and inclusion in the town and inspire new residents to get involved. “I hope to get people … to realize the decisions that affect our daily lives truly happen at the lowest level of government,” she explained, noting that she’s also excited to show off everything Marietta has to offer to newcomers in town and visitors. Her role as mayor will include not only promoting Marietta and what it offers but also working collaboratively with other groups and individuals. “I will be a part of helping our police department and keeping our town safe,” she stated. When she’s not wearing her mayor hat, Baltozer works at the Turkey Hill Experience in Columbia. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, which includes her husband, Justin, and their fur babies, Jude and Eleanor, and being outdoors. “A campfire is my true place of peace,” she remarked. “We love spending time boating on the Chesapeake with our second family in Edgemere, Maryland.” As she gets into the rhythm of her new position, Baltozer said she hopes to continue to promote the town she loves. “I only want the best for Marietta today and for future generations,” she commented. “Truly the mayor’s role is

My name is Zach Nauss and I am looking for A NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK opportunity. I’m a local business owner in search of a retiring farm or land owner who is looking to downsize and would be willing to help me take over their property. As real estate prices have inflated it has become harder to obtain my dream of a farm due to 20% down requirements. Unfortunately, programs the USDA offers won’t assist funding for equine operations since they don’t provide meat or crops. Western horse activities are growing in popularity but quality facilities are fading fast due to lack of assistance. Hard work ethic combined with business sense and exceptional horse care knowledge isn’t found easily, and that’s what my family and I have to offer. We currently rent a farm in Hershey where we provide boarding with no option to buy. I also rent a shop in Middletown for my business and then I have my residence in Elizabethtown that I own. We are ideally looking for 20-100 acres in or around Etown. We are open to any options or agreement structuring. If this is something you would consider please don’t hesitate to give 717-696-5141. me a call to see if this can work for both of us. 717-696-5141 Thank you, Zach. R079122

Unprecedented Vaccination Rates Among Residents & Staff
About the same time, a friend invited her to volunteer with the Humane League. Soon, she found herself fostering a mother pug and her seven puppies, and she noticed something else a transformation in her three children, who were teenagers at the time. “Animals really help us to communicate,” she said. She began working with another animal rescue before branching out on her own to focus on animals that needed special attention. She established the Rescue Ranch in 2018. “We have 12 acres here, 10 of which are fenced in,” she stated. She originally traveled back and forth from her home in Elizabethtown to the ranch, but recovering from a 2019 car accident made the trip difficult. Now, she lives at the ranch, while her husband lives in their Elizabethtown home. Ideally, she said, she’d like someone to take over day-to-day operations at the ranch, but for now, she spends her days among 40 to 60 dogs, eight therapy cats and about 20 kittens looking for homes. She’s joined by volunteer Cheryl Davis, who also lives at the ranch, The ranch relies on donations from community members and organizations and has thrived mostly due to Leach-Yates’ determination. She oversaw renovations to an outdoor shed to transform it into the Meow-Wow House and Catio, and work is underway to turn downstairs rooms at the ranch into a surgical center, groom room, exam room and quarantine rooms for animals when they first arrive. The dogs at the ranch vary in size and breed, and they average 13 years in age. Many are blind. Some are deaf, and some use carts to get around. Davis prepares a special mixture of hamburger and rice for their food since most of them no longer have teeth. Still, they have plenty of love to give, and that’s what Leach-Yates loves most about 2nd Chance 4 Life. “Every time I say, ‘I’m done. It’s enough,’ something happens to keep me going,” she stated. “Animals are healing. They don’t judge you. … I believe everybody has a calling, and this is mine. I have seen the miracles animals can work.” For more information, search for “2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue” on Facebook.

The Winters Heritage House Museum will host Elizabethtown College professor David Bowne on Thursday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. as part of its Conversation E-town lecture series. The event will be held in the H.U. Coble House Community Room, a red brick Victorian house located at 33 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Bowne will use climate fiction, also known as cli-fi, as a format for a creative short story writing workshop. An optional follow-up workshop will be held at the end of March. Cli-fi is a growing genre of fiction that centers on global warming concepts. Conversation E-town lectures are informal and interactive ways to discuss world situations, study their effects on the community, and consider a response strategy.

42-0 record heading into the back half of the season. SWIMMING Elizabethtown swimming has enjoyed a stellar start to the 2021-2022 season with both squads posting a 3-1 mark after thrashing Manheim Central on January 4th. The boy’s claimed a 130-20 victory while the Lady Bears posted an equally impressive 126-31 win. E-town’s other two victories, over Milton Hershey on December 10th and Penn Manor on the 21st, also came by lopsided finals. The boys blew by Milton Hershey 130-49 and Penn Manor 132-28 while the Lady Bears cruised to a 138-28 win over Milton Hershey and a 121-42 win over Penn Manor. The lone setback for both sides came on December 16th when the Bears tangled with Hempfield. The Black Knights took the boy’s meet 107-63 and the girl’s meet 111-59. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Back on the hardwood the Lady Bears sit at 4-3 with the highlight of the young season being a title in E-town’s own Tip-off Tournament. The Lady Bears opened the season on the 10th by surviving McCaskey 36-32 before claiming the title one day later with a 35-22 dismantling of Red Land. A 27-20 setback to Warwick followed on the 14th but Elizabethtown bounced back with a 44-30 victory over Conestoga Valley on the 17th. The Lady Bears’ final game before the holiday break went in the books as a 50-44 loss to Lebanon on the 21st and with a 51-31 setback to Columbia in the opening game of the Northeastern Holiday Tourney the Lady Bears had a quick two game slide. Elizabethtown did right the ship in the second half of the Northeastern Holiday Tourney, blowing out Kennard-Dale by a 49-16 final. Doesn’t handmade gnocchi in a buttery sauce with peas and prosciutto sound good right now? Or maybe you’re more in the mood for a burger? Whatever you’re craving, you can enjoy it at Infusions, the student-run restaurant located in the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center at 432 Old Market St., Mount Joy. In a typical school year, Infusions serves high tea on Tuesdays and a fixed-price lunch on Thursdays and Fridays. When the pandemic temporarily closed the restaurant, the staff and students got creative. “We needed an outlet for all the food we’re preparing,” explained chef instructor Tara Zhookoff. “If we have 20 kids making a quart of soup, that’s 20 quarts of soup. We had been giving food to the staff, but then we decided to open a carryout service to the public.” After operating on a takeout-only model for a few weeks, Infusions
reopened for sitdown service on Jan. 6. Menus are eclectic and change about every three weeks, and everything is made from scratch, including the sandwich rolls and desserts, which are prepared by students in the baking and pastry arts program. “The name ‘Infusions’ comes from the idea of taking different foods and fusing them together,” said Zhookoff. “We could serve anything from salmon to flat-iron steak to wings and sandwiches.” High school seniors in the yearlong all-day program learn everything from knife skills to working the food line to planning menus and purchasing food. They also learn front-of-the-house positions such as hostess and server. Senior Daniel Fisher said working in the kitchen has been a great learning experience. “A lot of the things we make, I had never made before,” he stated. “I had never worked with a fryer before.”

Senior Jess Trauger agreed, adding that the work requires more than just cooking skills. “We have to be good listeners as people call out orders,” Jess remarked. “Somebody might want something on the side, for example, and we want to get that right.” About 80% of the program is hands-on for the students, with 20% focused on theories and practices they can use in the kitchen, something senior Mikaelyn Victorino appreciates. “I never knew you should cook chicken to 165 degrees before,” she said. “I thought, ‘If it’s not pink, you’re good.’” Emily See and Eian Totten
both credit their instructors with helping them succeed in the kitchen. “It was stressful learning how to use a fryer at first, but now I love making fish and chips,” Emily noted, while Eian added, “Our instructors are very supportive, and they help you figure out what you’re doing wrong or how to do something better.” For many of the students, Infusions is a step on their way See Infusions pg 11

PA residents scramble to get last Walking Liberty Rolls PENNSYLVANIA - Once Pennsylvania residents got wind that Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because some of these U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins are already worth hundreds in collector value. “It’s like a run on the banks. The phones are ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone is trying to get them before they’re all gone,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Restricted Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of Pennsylvania residents al-
ready have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped minting these Silver Walking Liberties in 1947 and there can never be any more which makes them extremely collectible. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why at just the $39 state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury it’s a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls are the only ones known to exist and Pennsylvania residents are grabbing them up as fast as they can. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Restricted Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.
Q GOT ‘EM: Residents all across Pennsylvania who get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls are definitely showing them off. That’s because they are the only ones known to exist. And here’s the best part, these Bank Rolls are loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty coins some dating back to the early 1900’s and worth up to 100 times their face value so everyone wants them.
Last State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to Pennsylvania residents Pennsylvania residents get first dibs on last remaining Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for the next 2 days STATE DISTRIBUTION: A strict limit of 4 State Restricted Bank Rolls per PA resident has been imposed SILVER: one of the last silver coins minted for circulation

HOW TO CLAIM THE LAST STATE RESTRICTED BANK ROLLS If you are a Pennsylvania State Resident read the important information below about claiming the State Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at 8:30 am: 1-800-979-3771 EXT: RWB3515
Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:
Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberties were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command hundreds in collector value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:
It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s are worth up to 100 times the face value and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Walking Liberties are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
Why are so many Pennsylvania residents claiming them:
Because they are the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. Each Bank Roll contains a whopping 15 Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value. Best of all Pennsylvania residents are guaranteed to get them for the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty for the next two days.
How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:
Pennsylvania residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-979-3771 Ext. RWB3515 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,770 for each Pennsylvania State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

PENNSYLVANIA - “It’s a miracle these State Restricted Bank Rolls even exist. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. For the next 2 days the last remaining State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls were loaded with 15 rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are worth up to 100 times their face value, so there is no telling what Pennsylvania residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s fifteen rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. The only thing Pennsylvania residents need to do is call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper publication before the 2-day order deadline ends. “Rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are now worth $40 - $825 each in collector value,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of Pennsylvania residents will be taking the maximum limit of 4 Bank Rolls because they make such amazing gifts for any occasion for children, parents, grandparents, friends and loved ones,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of Hotline Operators are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30 am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 2 days to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all.” Lynne said. The Lancaster Conservancy has acquired a 155-acre tract of stream, forests, and farmland that surrounds the Conewago Recreation Trail in Mount Joy Township. The property is within the federally designated Highlands Region, which encompasses the forested ridge that run from Maryland north to Connecticut between the Appalachian Mountain Range and the urban centers of the Mid-Atlantic to the east. The designation seeks to encourage conservation within the region to protect drinking water supplies, natural habitat, and recreation opportunities - all factors which are present and now protected on this 155-acre property. This tract preserves views of upland forests and farmlands from the Conewago Recreation Trail, which begins near Elizabethtown at Route 230 and travels to the Lebanon County line. The property first came on the market 10 years ago, but more recently the owners acquired additional properties to facilitate commercial access and marketed the property for commercial development as a future warehouse site. Development of this land would have impacted several acres of wetlands and over a mile of the Conewago Creek, which flows through the property and ultimately drains into the Susquehanna River. Development would also have made it challenging to proceed with a proposed stream restoration project that Londonderry and Mount Joy townships have been jointly working on for several years. The County of Lancaster awarded a $150,000 grant to help fund the Conservancy’s acquisition of this property. The total cost of the property’s acquisition and permanent stewardship is $2.4 million. The Conservancy raises both private and public funds for these properties and is currently undertaking a fundraising campaign to pay off a loan from Fulton Bank that helped initially acquire the property. This tract is just downstream from the Conservancy’s
Conewago Recreation Trail
Donegal Highlands and Bellaire Woods nature preserves and will become the Conservancy’s 50th nature preserve. The Lancaster Conservancy is an accredited land trust, founded in 1969, and manages over 8,200 acres for the public to hike and enjoy 365 days per year. The Conservancy’s efforts in the Highlands region, which runs through the
northern stretch of the county, includes over 2,300 acres of land protected through easements or owned by the Conservancy as well as several hundred acres protected through the Conservancy’s joint projects with other land trusts and state agencies. To donate or learn more about the Conservancy, visit www.lancasterconservancy.org.
