Look Inside
Tackling Winter Weather BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For Jeff Kinsey, public works director of Elizabethtown Borough, snow is much more than just a pretty picture. It means rallying his crew of 16, which includes both borough employees and contracted services, to keep the streets safe for travel. We talked with Kinsey about how the borough tackles the white stuff in winter. M e r c h a n d i s e r : How many miles does the borough plow? Kinsey: 41.4 miles

A Journey To Mental And Emotional Wellness BY CATHY MOLITORIS
uring the height of the pandemic, Melissa Rhoads saw a change in her clients at the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown. “My clients seemed lonely,” recalled the director of the food bank. “They wanted to talk more. They were experiencing more sadness and anxiety.” A new screening tool offered through a grant from the Elizabethtown HUB may help people take the first step toward getting the mental health support they need. Jewel David Ministries, a nonprofit that offers counseling in Elizabethtown, was awarded the grant, said Dolores Reidenbach, founder and counselor. Reidenbach had collaborated with Rhoads as well as Laurie Shepler, executive director of Cornerstone Youth Center, and Anne Marie
know it’s OK to do this assessment. There is no stigma attached to it,” she said. “If you need help, it’s actually beneficial to everyone in your life who interacts with you if you get the help you need. It benefits everybody when someone takes care of their mental health.” Reidenbach stated that although the assessment is only available for a limited time, if the tool is successful, the organizations hope to offer it again in the future. “We would all agree that many are struggling with distress in the wake of the enduring pandemic,” she said. “This is an easy way to get started for anyone who is struggling.” To make an appointment for an assessment, contact Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown at 717361-8149, Hope Within Ministries at 717-367-9797 or Cornerstone Youth Center at 717-367-0000.

Shepler said the screening provides a good place for people to begin their mental health journey. “People may be looking for support, but they don’t even know where to start,” she stated. “This will get them started.” McAlester noted that the assessment tool is meant to help people take care of their emotional wellness, which can have a ripple effect on those around them. “I want people to

K i n s e y : Yes, the public works crew will plow any time of the day; however, our preference is to plow in the middle of the night when there is less traffic. Merchandiser: When does the borough begin planning for snow removal, and how do you plan? Kinsey: The planning process starts in March as the borough must submit our expected salt quantities for the next year. The salt quantity ordered is based on a five-year average.
M e r c h a n d i s e r : What is a homeowner’s responsibility in terms of their property? Kinsey: Homeowners must clear the snow and any accumulated ice from the public sidewalk in front of their property. (It) must be cleared within 12 hours from the end of the weather event. Snow is not permitted to be placed back on the street. The Borough routinely educates and encourages homeowners to clear the snow around the fire hydrants and follow PA vehicle code for cleaning ice and snow from (car) windows before driving. Merchandiser: If a resident has questions on the snow policies, whom should they contact? K i n s e y : We ask that residents and property owners contact the Elizabethtown Borough office at 717-367-1700.

My name is Zach Nauss and I am looking for A NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK opportunity. I’m a local business owner in search of a retiring farm or land owner who is looking to downsize and would be willing to help me take over their property. As real estate prices have inflated it has become harder to obtain my dream of a farm due to 20% down requirements. Unfortunately, programs the USDA offers won’t assist funding for equine operations since they don’t provide meat or crops. Western horse activities are growing in popularity but quality facilities are fading fast due to lack of assistance. Hard work ethic combined with business sense and exceptional horse care knowledge isn’t found easily, and that’s what my family and I have to offer. We currently rent a farm in Hershey where we provide boarding with no option to buy. I also rent a shop in Middletown for my business and then I have my residence in Elizabethtown that I own. We are ideally looking for 20-100 acres in or around Etown. We are open to any options or agreement structuring. If this is something you would consider please don’t hesitate to give 717-696-5141. me a call to see if this can work for both of us. 717-696-5141 Thank you, Zach. R079122

Capital Blue Cross has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for the fourth consecutive year, placing 23rd among large companies. According to Capital Blue Cross president and CEO Todd Shamash, the designation is awarded based on employees’ evaluations of the company. Most Capital Blue Cross employees began working remotely in March 2020 to best ensure their safety and well-being, while a small number of staff continued to work on-site to provide critical support services. As the COVID-19 pandemic evolved, Capital Blue Cross did, too, reinventing the way its employees work. Many now have full-time remote working status, while some have hybrid inoffice/at-home schedules, and a smaller number work full time on-site. The Best Places to Work rankings were announced on Jan. 6 during a virtual awards ceremony. The annual Best Places to Work list honors 100 total employers, divided into small (15 to 99 employees), medium (100 to 249 employees) and large (250

Lady Bears Battle Knights, Mares on the Road
BY ERIC PYLES
The opening stretch of 2022 has not been kind to the Lady Bears basketball team. The first game of the new year sent Elizabethtown to Landisville to face Section One leader, Hempfield. The next game was a road trip to Quarryville. The results were a pair of losses. The Lady Knights stretched their lead from five points after the first quarter to 14-points at the break to a 54-36 final. Sophia Ott paced the
Knights with a game high 24 points. Ainsley Raybold led E-town with 13 points while Taryn Hummer checked in with 12 points. The Lady Bears remained on the road for their January 10th clash with Solanco and returned home on a two-game slide thanks to a 41-22 Solanco victory. Raybold netted a game high 15-points, but no other Lady Bear scored more than Olivia Marin’s three points. Add in two points apiece from Jadyn Lloyd and Hummer and you get E-town’s

22-point total. The Golden Mares, looking for their first win, outscored Elizabethtown in all but the third quarter where the two sides played to a 7-7 draw. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Sometimes there really is no place like home. That was the case for the boys’ basketball team as they cruised by Solanco 73-54 on January 10th thanks to Patrick Gilhool’s 31-points. Gilhool netted the final 11 of his game and career-high 31-points in the fourth but the Bears did their photo by Mona Steinhauer heavy lifting in the opening half. to take a comfortable 43-19 lead into the locker rooms. Solanco managed to chip five points off E-town’s cushion in the second half but that still left the Bears with a 19-point win. Techeal Gonquoi added 20 points and Matthew Gilhool chipped in with 12 points in the win. BOWLING With COVID wreaking havoc on high school sports schedules, the Etown bowling team had just one match on tap, a 7-0 win over McCaskey on January 10th. The Bears used seven total keglers with just three going the full series but still posted wins of 1052-795, 1070-762 and 1023-775 with the sweep coming thanks to Elizabethtown’s 31452332 overall pin count edge. Ayden Pope led that trio with a 724 series thanks to a match high 270 in game two. He bookended that 270 with a 208 and 246 for his 724. Zach Wentzel started slow with a 195 but added games of 239 and 248 for a 682 series while Derek Deardorff started strong with a 224 but faded to a 203 and 192 for his 619 series. RIFLE The rifle team continues to strive
for perfection and nearly hit it with their 498-486 win over Garden Spot on January 6th. The Bears enjoyed perfect scores from Rachell Broomell, Kylie Mummau and Kyle Lloyd with Kate Kruft and Branden Rain just missing with their 99s. The Bears were a bit off target in their January 11th clash with Wilson but still posted a 490-487 win to remain undefeated on the season at 60. Broomell and Kruft rounded out the top five with their scores of 97 with Luke Turner and Rain taking the top spot with matching 99s. Stuck in the middle was Parker Bryant and his 98. WRESTLING Elizabethtown’s wrestling team has kept busy as 2022 has moved along. The Bears enjoyed a regular dual meet win over Lebanon on January 6th before posting a 5-0 mark in their own Grizzly Duals to take that crown. The result is a sparkling 11-1 record with just a few weeks remaining in the regular season. Against Lebanon, E-town claimed eight of the 10 bouts that were contested with no matches held at 132, 172 and 215. The Bears opened with three straight wins but only Wyatt Mummau had to work for his win,
picking up six team points with a first period pinfall at 120. Samuel Yoder (113) and Ryan Findlay (126) each enjoyed forfeit wins. The Bears followed with back-to-back-to-back pinfall wins starting with Nathan Thomas at 138. Nick Smith (145) and Aiden Robinson (152) followed with second period falls before Lebanon picked up their first win at 160. Hayden Haver picked up another second period fall at 189 while Hayden Best finished the match with a 51-second fall at 106. Two days later the Bears welcomed Wyomissing, Palmyra, Muhlenberg, York Tech and Waynesboro for the 2022 edition of the Grizzly Duals. Etown cruised to wins over York Tech, 64-9, and Wyomissing, 54-18, while their 43-28 win. “It was a great team effort,” praised head coach Mike Sernoffsky Findlay, Thomas, Robinson, and Jake Rudy were a perfect 5-0 during the championship run while Haver was just off that pace with a perfect 40 mark. Best and Mummau also enjoyed four wins, but both missed perfection with one loss. Ian Brosey also suffered just one loss but did collect three wins on the day.

McDevitt noted that breaking through the stigma should result in a changed view of overall wellness. “We will be looking at mental health the same way we look at physical health because they’re intertwined,” she shared. “If you aren’t mentally well, you will not be physically well (and vice versa).” Noting that variables associated with COVID-19 have propelled attitudes toward mental health forward, McDevitt pointed to specific areas where See Mental Health pg 7

In Pennsylvania, young people age 14 and older may make their own mental health decisions. McDevitt noted that teenagers may contact MHALC directly to be connected to resources. Because the northeast portion of the U.S. has higher access to care, the prevalence of mental illness is lower, according to McDevitt. However, it still takes most people who experience issues more than a decade to seek help. MHALC supports and resources, including an online screening program, are available.
