District Names Athletic Director Elizabethtown Area School District has named William Templin as its new athletic director. Since 2004, Templin has been employed as a learning support teacher at Elizabethtown Area High School. Templin will replace athletic director Linda Ahern, who will retire in March. In addition to his knowledge of the school district, its students, and the community, Templin brings experience in the world of interscholastic athletics. He was the high school’s head coach for baseball from 2016 to 2018. He also served as an assistant coach in baseball from 2005 to 2015. When not coaching, Templin has played a key support role for the athletic department during his years at Elizabethtown, serving as the co-assistant athletic director, a
game manager, a scorekeeper, and a member of the security team since 2006. Templin was chosen by a team of district-level and school administrators, school board members, and current high school coaches. “I’m looking forward to working in this new role and to continue to grow our athletic and extracurricular activities in the district,” Templin said. Templin began his work as athletic director on Jan. 8. A transition plan has been developed to transfer Templin out of his teaching role and into his new role to minimize any disruptions to the classroom. Templin holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Kutztown University and Master of Education from Penn State University.

Mount Joy Minnie To Return For Quirky Tradition By Diane Bitting
In the 10 years that Mount Joy Minnie has been popping up out of her tree stump on Feb. 2 to predict either a welcome early spring or six more blasted weeks of winter, the groundhog has been correct eight out of 10 times, according to Minnie’s “handler,” Nancy Shonk. With Groundhog Day 2019 fast See Mount Joy Minnie pg 2
Members of Mount Joy Minnie’s Groundhog Day crew gather to promote the upcoming event, which is organized by the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce and will be held on Feb. 2. Joining Minnie, held by her handler, Nancy Shonk (second from left), are (from far left) Chamber president Carl Hackman Jr., Barbara O’Neal (holding a photo of the late Bob Myers, the event’s founder), Sharon Myers, Chamber coordinator Kerry Meyers, Chris Neiles of event sponsor Keystone Lawn Company and Keith Greenawalt of Breeze Designs Unlimited, which is providing the sound system.
Church To Host Clothing Giveaway, Community Meal Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy, will hold its 11th annual clothing giveaway and community meal on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is open to anyone who is in need of clothing. No one is turned away, and there are no qualifications to participate. Organizers ask that participants take clothing that is needed and be respectful of others in attendance. The doors will open at 9 a.m.; no earlybird shopping will be permitted. Event organizers noted that the clothing giveaway serves two purposes: It is a way for church members to answer the call to serve and take care of others, and it also helps to promote a “reduce, reuse, recycle” lifestyle. All sizes of clothing will be available, See Clothing Giveaway pg 5

approaching, Minnie and her posse - members of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce recently gathered to promote this year’s event, scheduled for the usual early hour of 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Rotary Clock, located at East Main Street and Marietta Avenue in Mount Joy. This reporter wanted to know: Does the magnificent marmot have a secret to her impressive 80 percent success rate? Minnie remained mum she was, after all, rudely roused from her hibernation for this publicity gig. And Shonk was not about to spill any secrets. “She just has that feeling,” Shonk said. “She’s competing with the big boys, so she has to be pretty accurate.” The “big boys” are, of course, the famous Punxsutawney Phil and Lancaster County’s own Octorara Orphie, who rarely agree on a winter forecast. Minnie was Lancaster County’s first (and only) female groundhog, thanks to the vision of the late Bob Myers, an eccentric, fun-loving Mount Joy businessman who hosted Minnie’s first Groundhog Day appearance in 2008. After Myers died unexpectedly in July 2008, the festivities were put on hold the following February. But in 2010, Shonk, then the Chamber’s executive director, got
permission from Myers’ widow, Sharon, to restart the quirky event. It has been held every year since, at times drawing up to 100 people, including families with children, according to Shonk. For those readers who are still wondering: No, Minnie is not a flesh-and-blood groundhog; she’s a puppet that lives in a tree stump made of chicken wire and papier-mache. But some confusion is understandable. Take Carl Hackman Jr., Chamber president, who admitted, “It took me three years to figure out she wasn’t real.” (Oh, but her powers are real, very real indeed.) About four years ago, a crazy hat contest was added to the fun, since Minnie herself sports a sprightly spring bonnet. Winners get Mount Joy Money gift certificates from the Chamber, which can be spent at downtown businesses. Last year, Minnie even donned a Philadelphia Eagles football helmet. “Last year she also predicted the Super Bowl winner, too,” stated Hackman, referring to the Eagles’ 2018 championship. So, what would the late Myers think of the event today? “He’d love it,” answered Sharon. “He would have probably had a parade,” added Shonk. Kerry Meyers, Chamber
coordinator, described it as “just a fun community event.” “The amount of people that we have out here sometimes, it’s a lot of people for as cold as it is,” Meyers added. “Everyone’s usually in a good spirit. And the hats just keep getting funnier every year, and more of them.” As in years past, hat-wearing fun-lovers will gather at the town clock starting at 6:45 a.m. As the sun rises, lots of noise will be made to lure Minnie out of her tree trunk, with the hope that, unlike last year, she will predict an early spring. Refreshments, including coffee, hot chocolate and cookies, will be provided by the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185 and a local business. In the case of inclement weather, festivities will take place under the portico of Union Community Bank, 101 E. Main St. For more information, readers may visit www.mountjoychamber.com or contact Shonk at 717-989-6452 or Meyers at the Chamber at 717-653-0773.
Mount Joy Minnie, shown with her handler, Nancy Shonk, will share her weather prediction on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, during a special event beginning at 7 a.m. in downtown Mount Joy.

Elizabethtown’s undoing in the three-point loss to Cedar Cliff was the second half where they were outscored 22-16, erasing the threepoint edge the Lady Bears had carried into the locker rooms. Lonardi enjoyed another game high performance and was responsible for over half of the E-town offense thanks to her 21-point game. Emma Blyler (seven points), Carly Sedun (six points), Pierson (four points) and Ainsley Raybold (three points) took care of the remainder of the scoring. The highlight of Elizabethtown’s three game spurt came during a 67-38 throttling of Lebanon on January 11. “It was a good team win. We played well tonight,” said head coach John Myers. Lonardi entered the contest just 22 points shy of cracking the 1000point barrier for her career and nearly blew by the milestone in the first half. She collected 18 points through the opening half of action to lead Etown to a cozy 32-13 cushion. With all that first half scoring Lonardi needed just 41 seconds of the
third quarter to join her brother (2016 grad Joey) in Elizabethtown’s 1000-point club. “My teammates gave me a lot of great looks which always helps but without them I wouldn’t have been able to do it,” said Lonardi of her accomplishment. “It means a lot to me and means a lot to me that I’m right next to my brother on the banner, so that will be cool, two Lonardi’s up there.” The senior finished with 30 points as one of three Lady Bears in double digits for the game. Pierson and Elise Hassinger were the other two with matching 10 points games. SWIMMING The swim team enjoyed a double win on January 10th with the boy’s team rolling to a 121-40 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg while the girls hung on for a 91-79 win. The Lady Bears claimed one of the three relay races along with only three other event wins on the night. Lexi Fink accounted for one of those three wins, taking the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.74. Fink joined Rachel Handshew, Katie Locker
and Emily Kriner for a 1:50.90 in the 200 freestyle. Elizabethtown’s two remaining wins came from Sierra Kapcsos, who took the 100 freestyle with a time of 59.91, and Gabby Walsh, who won the 100 butterfly (1:06.57). Wins were not as hard to come by for the boy’s team with the Bears taking all but two events. Ben Azzalina was the lone swimmer to claim two individual events thanks to a 22.78 in the 50 free and a 57.23 in the 100 backstroke. Azzalina earned two more wins as part of the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Riley Runnels, Chase Shelly and Sam Azzalina took care of the remaining three legs of the medley relay while Runnels, Ethan Hall and Andrew Donahue joined Azzalina in the 400 freestyle relay. Shelly and Sam Azzalina helped E-town claim the final relay race with assistance from Donovan Arnold and Stuart Readinger. Runnels, Readinger and Sam Azzalina also picked up solo wins starting with Runnels’ 55.64 in the 100 freestyle. Readinger was the first to touch the wall in the 500 freestyle while Sam

Chargers Improve to 6-0 in Conference Play by Leah Sintic
The Chargers split their results last week, adding both a win and a loss to their 9-4 record, but the win came at the right time, preserving the teams unblemished 6-0 record in conference play. Tuesday’s home court, 55-21 triumph over the New Covenant Flames belonged to the Chargers from the tip off through the final buzzer. MC rocketed ahead on an unanswered 15-0 run in the opening quarter. “We were working on several of our offensive sets and concepts,” explained head coach Kory Pruner. “We asked the guys to focus on setting good screens, making hard cuts, and doing things that go beyond just knowing where to go.” The cushion allowed the Chargers to give all players ample playing time and try new rotations, resulting in nine different players to contributing
to the score count. Tyler Masters led the offensive charge with 11 points accompanied by five steals. Sophomore Sam Robinson notched eight second half points matched by an additional eight from Jack Hilsher. “Sam Robinson made a big impact in the game off the bench,” credited Pruner. “He played really well on defense, and was able to get a lot of transition opportunities as well.” Another sophomore with a big contribution was Evan Barnes, who knocked down one of the Charger’s three buckets from beyond the arc, bringing his total point count to seven. Hunter Stewart and Chip Stambaugh controlled the boards pulling down a combined 18 rebounds, and Stewart also snatched up four steals. walked to the mat at 120 for their next win. Nagel picked up an easy forfeit win leaving Cole Rice and his 8-3 decision over Austin Sauder at 152 as the final Elizabethtown victory. Wins were even more difficult to come by on the 16th when the Bears fell to Donegal by a 63-12 count. Etown managed just three victories starting with Elijah Stackhouse at 285. The senior claimed his heavyweight bout opposite AJ McCarty via pinfall. Rice picked up another decision, this one by an 8-6 final over Mason Ober at 152 while Bobby Walters claimed the third E-town win, topping Jeremy Algoe by a 9-4 count at 138. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Fans of the Elizabethtown boys’ basketball team endured a rollercoaster ride over the last three games. The Bears posted a solid win over L-L foe Lebanon on the 11th to kick off the stretch before falling to 5A front runner Northern York one day later. E-town rebounded on January 16th with a win against another non-conference 5A foe in Milton Hershey. Tally that altogether and the 9-7 Bears sit 10th in the unofficial District 3-5A rankings with six games remaining in the regular season. Elizabethtown took control of the Lebanon game early with a 22-14 run through the opening quarter
but the teamwide effort of the Chargers still allowed them to stay ahead, responding with 14 points of their own to squelch the comeback attempt. The previous Friday, the Chargers went on the road to face the Millersburg Indians, and came up short, 59-41. The first half was a back-and-forth battle displayed by a tight scoreboard reading 23-21 Millersburg advantage at the break, but from there the Indians put together two strong frames to extend their lead before the final buzzer. “We had a good first half,” acknowledged Pruner. “We played with them, but never really gained control.” Giving up position under the basket coupled with too many shooting fouls were MC flaws that led to second chance buckets and free throws for Millersburg. Capitalizing on these errors, Millersburg nailed 10-of-12 from the line and pulled down 36 rebounds collectively. Recognizing areas of weakness provides opportunity for growth, as Pruner pointed out. “I was proud of how the guys reacted to the environment. My hope is that we can take our downsides and improve for the next time we have a close game,” he added. Sophomores Aidan Masters and Hunter Stewart led the offense netting 13 and 10 points respectively. Stewart also pulled down eight rebounds extending his influence the span of the court. T. Masters had a quiet day with only two points, but his energy was displayed in other efforts accumulating five steals, four assists, and four rebounds. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Chargers experienced a similarly mixed bag of results last week, picking up a conference victory and slipping behind in a non-conference match. Tuesday, the MC girls edged out the New Covenant Flames by a final score of 39-24, led by 17 points from sophomore Kara Locker. Locker turned on the heat in the first and third quarters, accumulating 14 of her points in those periods. Naomi Ewing balanced Locker’s efforts, dropping in all 10 of her points in the second and fourth quarters to propel the Charger offensive through all four frames. “We definitely are getting closer,” acknowledged head coach Phil Ferrari, when discussing the team goal of putting together four consistent quarters of solid basketball. “We knew they would make some adjustments and come out strong in the third quarter. The key was that we only allowed them to cut two points off of our lead.” The contest held a bit of redemption for the Lady Chargers, who had previously fallen to the Flames in a December loss. “The key for us was to make them beat us from outside by not allowing them to get easy baskets in transition or by driving the ball into the paint,” explained Ferrari. Ewing and Haley Witmer each went two-of-two from the line, and

control away from E-town. Ryan Parise added 17 points behind four three pointers and a five-of-six night from the stripe while Elijah Eberly joined the pair in double digits with 12 points. One day later the Bears traveled to Manheim where the Barons were hosting this year’s edition of the Lancaster Lebanon-Mid-Penn Showcase. E-town battled Northern York until the end but the Polar Bears managed to slip out of town holding a 59-56 victory. “Our guys were just exhausted. It was our fourth game in five days and you saw a little of that come out in the fourth quarter but Northern York is a good team,” Parise said. “They are very balanced, very well coached and they made more plays then us down the stretch and that was the difference in the game.” Eberly notched a team high 12 points while Locker delayed his entry into the 1000-point club one more game with a 10-point effort. Locker finally joined the exclusive club on January 16th in the 68-61 win over Milton Hershey. “It was a really big win for us from a district playoff standpoint,” Parise said. “It was also cool that Larry got his 1000th in a big run that we were making. I think his 1000th point put us up eight with about three minutes to go.” Locker entered the contest needing 19 points to eclipse the career milestone and finished the seven-point victory with just enough, logging a team high 20 points. Luke Pierson added 16 points on the strength of four long range bombs while Parise chipped in with 10 points.

Brie Lehman knocked in a triple to round out the scoring efforts. “We played really well defensively, both individually and as a unit,” praised Ferrari, referring specifically to the first half where the Chargers held the Flames to only six points. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer two classes focused on fraktur, both of which will be taught by local artist Emily Smucker-Beidler. Fraktur, a fractured calligraphy surrounded by birds, swirls, and flowers, has evolved to become a distinctly American folk art. The first class, “Fraktur Introduction,” will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn how to create fraktur, rendering traditional motifs in ink before painting them in watercolor. By the end of the class, each participant will have his or her own small work of fraktur to take home. SmuckerBeidler will also give a presentation on the history of fraktur, looking at the three distinct styles from southeastern Pennsylvania. A starter kit containing the basic supplies is included with the class.
Separate costs have been set for LMHS members and for nonmembers. The deadline for registration is Friday, Jan. 25. The second class, “The Illuminated Letter,” will take place on Saturday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to noon. It will pick up where the first class left off, but participants do not need to have taken the first class. It will focus on learning lettering and calligraphy within the context and history of fraktur. Participants will learn how to use a nib pen and India ink and learn both traditional techniques and modern adaptations. The registration cost, which will be discounted for LMHS members, includes all materials required, including paper, handouts, tracing paper, pencils, and uncoated, machine-finished paperboard. The deadline for registration is Friday, March 8. Experienced students can take the advanced fraktur workshops, available to those who have previously taken fraktur classes at the LMHS. Workshops have been set for 8 a.m. to noon on Feb. 2 and March 16. Participants will receive one-on-one assistance from 8 to 9 a.m. and have studio time until noon. The per-session registration fee is due by Jan. 25 for the Feb. 2 class and by March 8 for the March 16 class. To register, readers may call the LMHS at 717-3939745 or visit www.lmhs.org.
Emily Smucker-Beidler will teach classes on fraktur at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society. “Fraktur Introduction” will be offered on Feb. 2, with “The Illuminated Letter” on March 16. Advanced fraktur workshops, for experienced students, will also take place on both days.

School Opens Aquaponics Facility Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), a Pennsylvania public cyber charter school, recently unveiled AgWorks at CCA, a public educational aquaponics facility. AgWorks at CCA provides students with hands-on learning experiences in a 6,100-square-foot, stateof-the-art controlled environment agriculture center located at CCA’s Capital Campus in Harrisburg. The laboratory, funded through
a federal grant, is one more tool CCA uses to teach about and train students for careers in various fields, including agriculture, environmental science and trades, through curricula, internships, field trips and partnerships with local businesses. Under the guidance of teachers and horticulture experts, students manage the AgWorks at CCA facility by growing and maintaining nearly 3,000
plants and approximately 400 fish, all while learning about aquaponics, hydroponics and aeroponics. Students also have access to three labs to conduct scientific experiments in the areas of research, genetics and culturing tissue. Additionally, AgWorks at CCA is open for other schools, universities and nonprofit organizations to tour and participate in a variety of educational activities. Students have the opportunity to grow and harvest organic fruits, vegetables and herbs, including avocados, bananas, lettuce, microgreens
and basil. They also have the opportunity to raise and maintain tilapia, koi and prawn, which play an important part in the aquaponics lifecycle. The produce harvested at AgWorks at CCA is already being donated to feed local communities or sold to retailers and restaurants. The AgWorks at CCA facility is a sustainable, zero-waste ecosystem. It uses fish to fertilize plants, and bio-controls are used in place of pesticides. Solar panels located on the roof of CCA’s Capital Campus supply 100 percent of the energy AgWorks at CCA, located at CCA’s Capital Campus in Harrisburg, See Aquaponics pg 16 is a new public educational aquaponics facility.

Aquaponics from pg 15 needed to power the AgWorks at CCA facility. In addition to the facility, CCA has created a fully functional, smaller-scale, traveling version of AgWorks at CCA to visit communities throughout Pennsylvania, creating opportunities for all CCA students to participate in aquaponics activities and handson lessons. Furthermore, CCA has created virtual experiences allowing students to engage with the AgWorks at CCA facility from afar through live cameras, hightech water monitoring sensors and an online digital dashboard
that processes real-time data. CCA welcomes partnerships with businesses, researchers and communities that can benefit from AgWorks at CCA and that are willing to create learning experiences for kindergarten through 12th-grade students. The unveiling of the facility was attended by CCA students and faculty, elected officials, business leaders and community partners. The event included a ceremonial harvest, a tasting and tours of the facility. A donation of 300 leafygreen vegetables was made to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.
