In 2019, Emily Kline and Melissa Faller, the founders of Emme Dance Collective, created a dance concert called “Bring Into Being” to introduce their company to the Lancaster area. This year, the pair has created “Veer” with a goal of distinguishing their dance company from other established organizations. “We want to be known for our thing, which is contemporarystyle movement,” explained Faller. “We are veering off into our own direction.” “Veer,” which will include 10 dance pieces and last about an hour, will be presented on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. The original pieces choreographed by Kline and Faller will be performed by more

than 20 dancers, including 12 apprentices. Dances for the family-friendly show have been kept intentionally short so that the performance moves quickly. As with “Bring Into Being,” “Veer” will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques pulled from modern dance, but the program will depart from the themes of “Bring Into Being.” “This year, we are incorporating some different themes,” Kline pointed out. “There will be similarities, but we both tried to branch out.” Faller agreed. “I think with the title ‘Veer,’ we both felt (the work) was jarring,” she said, adding that the movement and music will be edgier compared to the calmer “Bring Into Being.” “This time we are trying to pack a punch with our movement and everything we are showing,” noted Faller. completed approximately 50 mats that have been given away and well-received. The technique for making the mats begins with flattening basic plastic bags the two-handled ones used at grocery and convenience stores - and then measuring and cutting them into pieces that are rolled into balls of plarn. Next comes the process of crocheting the mats, each of which Selph said usually takes two weeks for her to complete, but it can take more or less time depending how much time per day someone has to devote to the project. “I usually spend a couple of hours each evening working on it,” shared Selph. One evening a month, Selph opens up her home for anyone from St. Mark’s UMC or the community to gather to work on Mats of Love. “It’s been pretty lively,” remarked Selph, adding that attendance usually ranges from five to 15 people. The beauty of the project is that people of all ages can help, Selph said, whether they have crocheting skills or not. Some members of St. Mark’s UMC assist by donating bags, and the church has a box designated for plastic bag donations. Others cut strips of plastic and roll plarn balls at home in their leisure time. “Some people find it very therapeutic,” commented Selph. Mats of Love participant Mary Rost agreed, chiming in, “It’s truly cheap therapy.” “There are a lot of people that just donate the bags, which is great because we’re happy to have them,” said Rost. Colorful bags are especially appreciated as Rost explained that it adds dimension and interest to the overall design and look of the mat. The concept of making and giving away the plarn mats is not new or unique to the Mats of Love group at St. Mark’s UMC, emphasized Selph. “There are lots of people doing it, even here in Lancaster,” she shared. In addition to giving mats to Mount Joy Helping Services, Mats of Love participant Deb Rupp delivers mats to Lancaster First Assembly of God, where the mats are given out as needed to homeless people who attend a free monthly meal hosted by that congregation. Even the excess of the plastic bags used in the process - the handles and very bottom portion of each bag - are put to good use, as they are donated to the Mount Joy Lions Club to later be used in making recycled benches. To learn more about Mats of Love at St. Mark’s UMC, readers may call the church at 717-653-5493.

The American Heart Association (AHA), a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, together with its signature movement, Go Red for Women, encourages men and women to wear red on Friday, Feb. 7, in honor of National Wear Red Day. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and many groups across the country observe National Wear Red Day each year on the first Friday in February to raise awareness about heart disease as the leading cause of death among Americans, especially women. The AHA notes that heart disease and stroke symptoms can present differently in women as compared to men. The Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and supported locally by companies throughout central Pennsylvania. CVS Health will offer no-cost heart health screenings at MinuteClinic locations nationwide on select Thursdays in February. Two nights later the Bears wrapped up their Section One-Section Two crossover games by hosting Hempfield. The winning streak became official with a 73-42 thrashing of the Black Knights. “That was by far our best game of the year, and I’ve been saying to anyone that will listen, that I don’t feel like we’ve hit our peak yet. Hopefully this was a step in the right direction,” said Parise. Elizabethtown, as the final would suggest, controlled from the start with a 23-15 burst through the opening eight minutes. “We did get the game moving. We did some things defensively at the beginning, even though we gave up some points that got the game moving,” said Parise. “Then in the second and Photo by Doug Hilton third quarters we really dug in defenGavin Gilhool handles the ball for the Bears during their 61-58, sively, man-to-man, because we knew Section Two win over Lebanon last Tuesday in E-town. they couldn’t hold the ball because they were losing. “Our goal was to win the section but that didn’t materialize. Getting in the playoffs is good,” said Parise. “You get in the playoffs anything can happen.” A win over Conestoga Valley back on January 24th started the threegame run but a 61-58 win over the Cedars on the 28th pushed the Bears down the path to a winning streak despite the oddities of the game. “It was a real strange game,” said Parise, “I think the first half was one of the best halves of basketball we’ve played all year and the second half was just a weird half. There were technicals and they started hitting shots and getting
which is what we do best.” Doing what the Bears do best led to single digit outputs for Hempfield over the middle section of the game, allowing E-town to stretch their lead to 17 points at intermission and 26 points heading into the final frame thanks to a 33-15 run. The Bears closed out the contest with a 17-12 advantage in the fourth. This time is was Luke Pierson dropping a monster game with 19 points to go with 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Parise added 11 points and 10 assists while Eberly added eight rebounds and one block to his game high 25 points. SWIMMING The Elizabethtown swimming teams wrapped up their 2019-2020 regular season with a sweep over Cocalico on January 29th. The Lady Bears collected an easy, 127-39, win while the boy’s squad had to sweat out their 91-79 victory. Regardless of the path, the end result is identical 83 overall records with 5-1 marks in league play, leaving both teams in second place in the Section Two standings. The boy’s team claimed just four events on their way to victory with Ben Azzalina accounting for two of those four. The junior posted a 22.26 to lead a sweep of the 50-freestyle with his 50.52 taking the top spot in the 100-freestyle. Braden Newsome, with a 5:49.15, earned the final individual event win. The freshman was the first of three Bears across the finish line in the 500-freestyle. Stewart had another big evening earning a double-double in Tuesday’s decisive 69-43 triumph over the West Shore Bobcats. Stewart paired his 24 points with 16 rebounds to pace the squad, while classmate Damian Rutt also rose to the challenge, knocking down another 15 points for the Chargers. “Hunter and Damian both stepped up for us, both scoring and rebounding,” pointed out head coach Kory Pruner. “Jack Hilsher and Harrison Crick have also been leading by setting a tone of gritty play on defense,” he added. are giving us all they’ve got,” noted Pruner. “We had to adjust to what they were doing, and it was nice to see the guys push through some adversity.” Those halftime adjustments paid off, allowing the Chargers to pull away for the significant win. On Monday, the club conquered Lebanon Catholic by a comfortable 54-36 margin, this time with Masters leading the scoring with 15, and Hilsher netting 11. Masters and Rutt sparked the defense with five steals apiece, and Stewart and Chip Stambaugh dominated the boards each collecting eight rebounds. Lebanon briefly held a 10-8 lead after the first eight minutes, but once again the MC club adjusted their strategy and doubled the Beavers point contributions in the following two quarters, opening a 37-22 lead heading into the final period. “Our team depth has started to really benefit us,” explained Pruner, noting that while injury or foul trouble can cripple a team’s productivity, the deep and talented Charger bench affords the team the luxury of strong substitutions. “We have gone to guys off the bench for long stretches of time, and they have helped us build leads in all cases,” he credited.
Only two additional showdowns remain in the boys’ regular season, facing both Covenant Christian and New Covenant and hoping to keep their undefeated CCAC record intact before heading into the postseason. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Chargers picked up a pair of wins, taking down CCAC opponents West Shore Christian and Dayspring, to boost their conference record to 9-1. Friday night the squad headed to Dayspring and dealt the Warriors a 54-36 loss. Rocketing out on a 15-4 run to open the contest, the Lady Chargers won three-of-the-four quarters for a comfortable differential between them and the Warriors, spurred by a game-high 22 points from Kara Locker. The team wide effort has propelled the team to their positive position heading towards the post-season, with each member of the squad contributing whether or not that can be seen in the stats. “I’d like to recognize that our bench players show up every day and work really hard in practice in order to make the team better,” pointed out coach Phil Ferrari. “Without their efforts we would not be in the position we are now, so we appreciate the work they are putting in out of the spotlight.”

Kenzie Baughman poured in 24 Charger points in last Tuesday’s 51-26 win over the West Shore Bobcats. Baughman’s high score wasn’t her only contribution as she dished out five assists, picked up two steals, grabbed six rebounds and went seven-of-nine at the line. Excellent free throw shooting was contagious for the Chargers, with Locker (four-of-four) and Julia Martin (two-of-two) each shooting 100 percent from the line. “We place a lot of importance on free throws as it is one of the most efficient ways to score,” emphasized Ferrari. “We’ve done a great job all year getting to the line, especially in the fourth quarter where those shots are high pressure and often the difference between a win and a loss,” he added. Haley Witmer picked up half a dozen rebounds at both ends of the floor to collect a total of 12, and Naomi
Ewing, Brie Lehman and Locker pulled down seven apiece. Three opponents are slated for this week, bringing the regular season to a close. Hoping to finish strong and build momentum for both CCAC and District III playoffs, the club has several goals. “We want to work on our defense. We’ve been struggling to keep teams out of the paint on drives, and we want to get better in that area,” noted Ferrari. Turning the corner into the final week of the regular season, Ferrari knows the team needs to strike a balance when it comes to recovery from injuries, overall team health, and additional experience for second string players in order to be at their best for the postseason. A three-game lineup this week will test the Lady Chargers’ stamina as they seek to build momentum for playoffs.

streak snapped just shy of the finish line with a loss to Manheim Central on January 28th. The setback, coupled with a January 30th win over Garden Spot, has the Bears at 9-4 with one match remaining. Central stopped the winning streak at seven by combining four perfect scores and one 99 for a 499 to counter Elizabethtown’s 495. Emma Kreiser and Rachel Broomell collected perfect scores for E-town while Kyle Lloyd and Tyler Chapman each posted a 98. Aivery Shuck slipped in between with a score of 99. Two days later the Bears got back to winning with five near perfect score pacing a 495-490 victory over Garden Spot. Kreiser, Shuck, Broomell, Emily Bonsall and Arabella Albino were those five shooters, each with a 99. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL There is never a good time to experience a three-game slide but late in the season, as the playoffs appear on the horizon, is definitely the worst time. Unfortunately, that is where the Lady Bear basketball team finds themselves with setbacks to Lebanon and Hempfield following
the January 25th loss to Red Lion. The result is a 6-6 mark in league play that leaves E-town outside the L-L playoffs. Their 13-8 overall mark keeps them in the 5A field and has them on track to host a first round District 3-5A playoff game. Things went sideways in the January 28th loss to Lebanon in the third quarter. The Lady Cedars used a 1910 run to flip E-town’s 22-14 halftime lead on its head. Elizabethtown recovered in the fourth but Lebanon matched E-town point for point to maintain their slim one-point edge for the 50-49 victory. Macy Seaman netted a team high 16 while Carly Sedun chipped in with 10 points. Two nights later, the Lady Bears were unable to get their offense going until the fourth quarter. That allowed the Lady Black Knights to hold a 30-4 lead heading into the final eight minutes. Elizabethtown Photo by Doug Hilton did post a 15-4 edge in that final frame to make it a 34-19 final. Camp from pg 1 Purpose” is set to take place on campus from Sunday to Friday, July 19 to 24. “This is a project we’ve been thinking of for several years,” explained Cristina E. Ciocirlan, department of business chair and associate professor of management. “The focus of the camp is on social enterprise, and (the students) will be using a market approach to solve community and social and environmental problems.” Countless examples of thriving social enterprises exist locally and globally, and Ciocirlan cited the Grameen Bank founded by social entrepreneur, banker, and economist
Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh as one of those. “That bank focused on giving small loans to female entrepreneurs in Bangladesh, and with those small loans they could build a business for themselves,” Ciocirlan explained. “The main difference between a social enterprise and a charity is that a charity gives away things without offering any compensation, but social enterprises actually charge a price for the good,” Ciocirlan described. “It’s the idea that (people) could use entrepreneurship to make the community or the environment better.”

At camp, students will take a field trip to a local social enterprise to see the concept in action and ask questions. Another visit will be made to a local business accelerator and incubator to show campers first-hand about another avenue available for launching and growing a business. Ciocirlan noted that accelerators work with existing businesses to take their businesses to the next level, while incubators help entrepreneurs as they move from idea to launch. Campers will receive instruction on how to develop, refine, and test busi-
ness ideas; how to create a business plan; how to market and finance an enterprise; and how to persuade people that their idea is worth pursuing. Students will form small teams to research needs and develop an idea for a social enterprise. They will work toward presenting a live pitch on their projects to a team of judges in a friendlier “Shark Tank”-style format. Elizabethtown College offers both a minor and a concentration in entrepreneurship. Ciocirlan noted that the concept of social enterprise beautifully complements the college’s motto
Emme Dance Collective from pg 1 “Some movement is more animalistic,” said Kline, who pointed out that a piece called “Birds of Paradise” was influenced by tropical birds. “Some (numbers) are influenced by real-life events - even tragedies - and real-life relationships,” she explained. As with the debut of the company in 2019, Kline and Faller noted that dances will be quick moving and engaging, and
the choreography will be colorful and upbeat. For “Veer,” the costuming will be brighter as well. “This year, we branched out, with some of our costuming being more vibrant in color,” said Kline. “We have some that is more eccentric, and (we used) more abstract shapes.” Faller and Kline attended school together in Manheim Township School
of “Educate for Service.” “Basically, this model says that we should use our knowledge and skills to benefit community,” summarized Ciocirlan. Lodging for the week will give students the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life as two students will be assigned to a room in the adult-chaperoned residence halls. Meals will be served in the allyou-can-eat college cafeteria. Evenings will allow time for recreation for campers with outdoor games, board games, movies, and more. The Bowers Center for Sports,
Fitness, and Well-Being will be open for use, including the swimming pool. Registration for the camp is now open at www.etown.edu/ entrepreneur. An early bird discount rate with coupon code EARLYBIRD is available to anyone who applies by Sunday, March 1. Discounted rates are also available to children of Elizabethtown College alumni, faculty, and staff with coupon code BLUEJAY. Graduates of the camp will receive a $1,000 scholarship, renewable for four years, to attend Elizabethtown College.
District from a young age. Both took lessons at a local dance studio and, following graduation, majored in dance at DeSales University in Center Valley. At DeSales, Kline focused on choreography, while Faller was more interested in performance. The pair launched Emme Dance Collective in Lancaster at the end of June 2018. Emme Dance Collective is sponsored fiscally through Fractured Atlas in New York. In the past, Kline and Faller have used their talents to give back to the
community by contributing to other local organizations, an effort they plan to repeat. The yearly dance concert helps raise funds to make that possible. “(The annual performance) keeps us going and allows us to give back and hold fundraiser shows,” explained Faller. Tickets are necessary to attend the show. A discount will be offered for tickets purchased by Wednesday, Feb. 26. Tickets may be purchased at www.emmedancecollective.com. Tickets may also be available at the door.
