Decades On The Drums BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For more than 30 years, Liberty DeVitto sat behind a drum set, backing up Billy Joel on stage and working with him on 13 platinum albums that have sold more than 150 million copies. He also wrote and performed the drum parts on 22 of Joel’s 23 Top-40 hits and all six of his Grammy Award-winning recordings. His relationship with Joel was fraught with tension at
times, leading to a falling out later in his career. DeVitto will discuss it all when he comes to Elizabethtown College to read from his memoir, “Liberty: Life, Billy and the Pursuit of Happiness.” DeVitto will give a talk and will sign copies of his book on Friday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Brinser Lecture Hall, located inside the Steinman Center on the campus, 1 Alpha Drive. The event is free. See Drums pg 4
Tina Shyver-Plank
Hope And Healing BY CATHY MOLITORIS
his is the story of two people. One wanted to die. The other wanted to live. Through an act of kindness, they both found a second chance. Tina Shyver-Plank has written a memoir about her experience donating a kidney to her first cousin, Brian Shyver. “Second Chance: A Kidney Between Us” was published in January, but the story of the book dates back much further. Tina and Brian grew up together in Mountville. “He lived two doors away from me, and we were best buds,” recalled Tina, who now lives in Elizabethtown. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a child, Brian once went into insulin shock in front of Tina, and the experience made an impression. “From that day forward, I vowed that if I could be a conduit for his healing, I would be,” she stated.
“It’s good to be a living donor. It changes lives in so many ways.”
and knew that donating her kidney would be yet another step on her mental health journey to wellness. “I was finally able to help him heal, like I had wanted to do years before,” she said. “I begged him to let me donate my kidney.” The surgery was performed at Ohio State University in April of 2002. The transplant was a success, and Brian was able to achieve two of his goals: seeing his son graduate from high school and spending more time with his family. Nine years after the transplant, Brian passed away from diabetic complications unrelated to the donated kidney. Soon after the transplant, Tina began writing the book. She only finished about 40 pages before deciding she didn’t have enough material. She put it aside for years, but when she was laid off from her job in 2019, she revisited the subject. She went to visit Brian’s family
“This show ... is a two-act valentine for couples, near-couples and anyone who has loved or regretted not loving a special person,” said Joe Winters, describing “Love Letters,” which will be performed at Susquehanna Stage from Friday, Feb. 11, through Monday, Feb. 14. “It’s about regret, passion, romance and the mystery of what attracts two dissimilar people and how their lives are affected by their correspondence

A few years later, she learned that Brian was dying. “He was on dialysis, and he needed a kidney,” Tina said. “His (immediate) family members weren’t matches.” However, it turned out that Tina was a 99.9% match. Although Brian’s condition was heartbreaking, Tina felt her prayers had been answered

After Brian’s family moved away when he was a teenager, the two kept in touch as best as they could, but Tina’s life took a turn. A history of abuse and a broken relationship led to depression that eventually propelled Tina to attempt suicide. She spent a month in the hospital and intensive therapy before she began to heal.

and realized the book could focus on her entire relationship with Brian, not just the transplant. “I came home, and I had a fire in my soul to finish the book,” she stated. “I felt like my cousin was guiding me from heaven.” She finished the book and shopped around for a publisher before landing on TouchPoint Press. “They have a faith imprint, and faith plays a big part in this book,” she said. “It was a cathartic experience to write this book. I hope people will take away from this book that it’s good to be a living donor. It changes lives in so many ways.” Tina will discuss “Second Chance” on the “A Book and a Chat” podcast on Wednesday, March 30, at 7 p.m. A trailer about the book can be viewed on YouTube by searching for “Second Chance: A Kidney Between Us Book Trailer,” and the book is available for purchase on Amazon or at www.touchpointpress.com.

“Liberty had a fractured friendship with Billy Joel,” noted Jesse Waters, director of the Elizabethtown College Bowers Writers House, who is hosting the event. “They did reconcile, though. Billy Joel wrote the foreword for the book.” Along with Joel, DeVitto played with numerous luminaries in the music industry, including Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Mick Jagger, Elton John and Meat Loaf. He was inducted into the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013, and he continues to lecture and play all over the world. “For decades, Liberty has been the backbone of so many different musical acts, and I’m so excited to be able to bring him to our campus community,” Waters said. “Aside from performance, he’s also been a pioneer for different social initiatives, so he definitely blends in with our Educate for Service mission.” Among the programs DeVitto has supported is Little Kids Rock, a program that
brings music education to children across the country. Prior to his lecture, DeVitto will give a craft talk at 3:30 p.m. in the Bowers Writers House, located at 840 College Hill Lane, Elizabethtown. Waters, a drummer himself, plans to bring his drum kit to the talk for DeVitto to use for demonstration. “The reading from the memoir will begin at 7 p.m., but we’ll have opportunities for photos and book signings starting about 6:20,” Waters noted. The Bowers Writers House hosts regular programming throughout the year that is free and open to the public. Upcoming programs include presentations by Scott LaMar of WITF’s “Smart Talk” and author T.C. Boyle. Reservations are requested for DeVitto’s craft talk and may be made by emailing Waters at writershouse@etown.edu. The lecture is first-come, firstserved. For more information, including the full schedule of events at Bowers Writers House, visit www.etown .edu/centers/writershouse.

character of Melissa as a wealthy, artistic free spirit, noting, “(She is) smart, funny, moody and prone to rash decisions.” By contrast, the character of Andy is more uptight. “He’s a bit of a stuffy person who grows up with all the expectations of his family and the society around him,” said Sturgis. “He is very ambitious, almost to a fault. He succeeds at what he sets out to
do, but pays prices along the way for his choices.” Koslosky said the show will appeal to a wide variety of audiences because it is a show about love and friendship. “I’d say pretty much anyone interested in human relationships - which is all of us - could see this play and come away with lots to think about and, hopefully, with a renewed faith in the sometimes messy, but always

Good-Zeiner agreed, pointing out that audience members may recognize themselves in the couple on stage. “Come and see two real people laugh, struggle, celebrate and grow as they find themselves, and each other, over the passage of a lifetime,” she stated. “You will laugh, maybe cry and find yourself in these two characters as they journey through the roller coaster we call life.” “Love Letters” will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. For the Susquehanna Stage production, eight actors will portray the characters, with a different duo performing each evening. Layne Zeiner and Deb Good-Zeiner, who are married in real life, will open the show on Feb. 11. Steve Sturgis and Christine Koslosky will perform on Saturday, Feb. 12. Bears Sit 7th in District Three Power Rankings
BY ERIC PYLES
Despite a recent 1-2 stretch the boys’ basketball team sits comfortably inside the 16-team District 3-5A bracket, their 11-9 overall mark has them seventh in the power rankings. On January 28, the boys won 62-47 over Conestoga Valley. Elizabethtown controlled all four quarters with the heavy lifting coming during a 14-5 second quarter spurt. That turned a onepoint affair into a 10-point cushion that the Bears extended to 15-points over the second half. Four players made it to double digits, led by Braden Cummings and his 17-points. Matthew Gilhool (16-points), Techeal Gonquoi (14-points) and Patrick Gilhool (12-points) followed with Nathan Johnson tacking on the final three points. Saturday the 29th Elizabethtown hosted the Pioneers and finished with a 55-42 loss. Lampeter-Strasburg controlled all but the second quarter where Etown’s 8-2 edge made it 2019 at the break. Matthew Gilhool netted 15 and Cummings added 10-points. February 1st the Cedars left E-town with a 40-37 victory thanks to a buzzer beating three-pointer. Patrick Gilhool (16-points) and Matthew Gilhool (11-points) paced Elizabethtown in the loss.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Momentum can be a fickle thing. One minute you have it, the next you don’t. Take the girls’ basketball team, on January 28th the Lady Bears cruised to a 12-point win over Conestoga Valley only to stumble and drop their February 1st encounter with Lebanon by seven. Add it up and you get E-town’s 8-10 overall record. Elizabethtown held a 9-7 edge after the first quarter. The Lady Bears kicked into high gear for the second quarter, outscoring the Buckskins 18-3 for a 27-10 lead into intermission. CV cut it to 12 with a 26-21 edge in the second half. Jade Love-Morris dropped 24-points in the win. Against the Lady Cedars, E-town put four players in double figures but suffered the 61-54 loss. Ainsley Raybold and Kallee Locker both tallied a team high 14-points with Taryn Hummer adding 13 and Love-Morris 10points. Maggie Clouser tacked on the final three. SWIMMING Over the last few seasons, the final week of January has been a big one for the E-town swimming teams. The reason, a late season meet with Ephrata that more often than not has decided the Section Two champion. This year was no different. The Mountaineers posted dual 95-75

During the pandemic in 2020, Quarryville resident Jim Fogarty decided to get himself mentally and physically healthy. To achieve this goal, Jim started running in the mornings and soon discovered his passion and enjoyment for long distance running. One of his favorite local places to run is the Enola Low Grade Trail, which, according to Jim, is a wonderful asset to the area. After completing two half marathons, he wanted to challenge himself further, so he began searching for fundraising relays in which he could participate. While scrolling on Facebook, Jim stumbled across MS Run the US. Four years before Ashley Schneider, founder of MS Run the US, was born, her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). She completed a 3,288-mile solo run across America in 2010 to raise $500,000 for MS research, but only raised 10% of her initial
goal. As a result, she decided to run across America again, but with more people. In 2013, MS Run the US launched an annual relay run in which 19 individuals each run six marathons in six days and fundraise at least $10,000. The money raised supports MS Run the US’ mission to raise awareness of the disease, aid research, and help those living with disability due to MS. Jim identified with Schneider, as his mother had also received an MS diagnosis. Witnessing the negative impact of MS on his mother’s quality of life for the past 20 years is what inspired Jim to sign up for MS Run the US. MS is a potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system. With MS, there are communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body, which can cause permanent damage to or deterioration of the nerves. There is no known cure, but certain treatments can help individuals manage their symptoms. In the case of

Jim’s mother, Mary Beth Fogarty, she experiences tiredness, fatigue, and mobility issues, and her body does not handle warm temperatures well. “I can’t imagine knowing there’s no cure for a disease you’ve been diagnosed with and that it will only get worse,” said Jim. “I want to help with the mental anguish and financial burden that comes with that.” Between Sunday, July 31 and Friday, Aug. 5, Jim will run a total of 169 miles from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to Brookville. This means that he will run about 28 miles each day to complete segment 17 of the 19-segment relay, which spans from Santa Monica, Calif., to New York, N.Y. “My goal is twofold,” said Jim. “To bring awareness to this disease and to raise money for finding a cure and helping those currently with it. Every dollar really does help with this effort.” To donate to Jim’s relay fundraiser, visit https://bit.ly/ JimMSRuntheUS. To learn more about MS Run the US, visit www.msruntheus.org.

UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT ISSUED COINS SEALED IN EACH BAG:
Silver Morgan Dollar 1878-1921
Q PENNSYLVANIA AREA RESIDENTS CASH IN: It’s hard to tell how much these unsearched Vault Bags loaded with rarely seen Gov’t issued coins that everyone will be trying to get could be worth someday. That’s because each Vault Bag is known to contain nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins some dating back to the 1800’s including all those shown in today’s publication. In addition, after each bag is loaded with over 200 rarely seen coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks are never searched to determine collector values. So you better believe at just $980 these unsearched Vault Bags are a real steal.

“The vaults at Federated Mint are going empty,” said Laura A. Lynne, Director of Coin and Currency for Federated Mint. That’s because a decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins, some worth up to 50 times their face value, means unsearched Vault Bags loaded with U. S. Gov’t issued coins dating back to the 1800’s are now being handed over to U.S. residents who find the first three digits of their zip code listed in today’s publication. “But don’t thank the Government. As Director of Coin and Currency for Federated Mint, I get paid to inform and educate the general public regarding U.S. coins. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen Gov’t

issued coins to the general public — I’m being asked how much are the unsearched Vault Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and is known to contain rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollars and these coins alone could be worth $40 - $325 in collector value each according to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins. So there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search through all the coins. But you better believe at just $980 these unsearched Vault Bags are a steal, “said Lynne. “These are not ordinary coins you find in your pocket change. These are rarely seen silver, scarce, collectible and non-circulating U.S. coins dating back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Lynne. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is very important. After the Vault Bags were loaded with over 200 Gov’t issued coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $1,500 for residents who miss the 48-hour deadline, but for those U.S. residents who beat the 48-hour deadline the Vault Bag fee is just $980 as long as they call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsearched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. And you better believe with each bag being loaded with nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins we’re guessing they’re going to go quick,” said Lynne. The phone lines will be ringing off the hook

Q UNSEARCHED: Pictured above are the unsearched Vault Bags being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the 48-hour deadline ends. And here’s the best part. Each Vault Bag is loaded with over 200 Gov’t issued coins, including all the coins pictured in today’s publication, some dating back to the 1800’s and worth up to 50 times their face value. Each coin is verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above before the bags are securely sealed and the dates and mint marks are never searched by Federated Mint to determine collector value. beginning at precisely 8:30 a.m. this morning. That’s because each unsearched Vault Bag is loaded with the rarely seen coins pictured left and highly sought after collector coins dating clear back to the 1800’s including iconic Morgan Silver Dollars, a historic Peace Silver Dollar, stunning Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars, the collectible Silver Eisenhower Dollars, spectacular Silver Liberty Head Half and Quarter Dollars, rarely seen Silver Franklin Half Dollars, high demand President Kennedy Silver Half Dollars, beautiful Silver Standing Liberty Quarter Dollars, American Bicentennial Quarters, rare Liberty V Nickels, one cent Historic Wheat Coins including 1943 “Steel Cents”, one of the beautiful Winged
Liberty Head Dimes, scarce Indian Head one cent U.S. coins and the last ever minted Buffalo Nickels. “With all these collectible Gov’t Issued coins up for grabs we’re going to do our best to answer all the calls,” said Lynne. Thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to claim the U.S. Gov’t issued coins. That means U.S. residents who find the first three digits of their zip code listed in today’s publication can claim the unsearched bags of money for themselves and keep all the U.S. Gov’t issued coins found inside. “February is often known as the month of love,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim. While many associate that love with flowers, candy or other Valentine’s Day gifts, there’s a bigger love at work at Mt. Hope, Wilson stated. “It’s a time of remembering Christ’s love for us and the call to love others as Christ first loved us. In turn, we emphasize the importance of looking out for our neighbors, but the journey of love doesn’t stop there.” February, she notes, is also the month during which Random Acts of Kindness Week is commemorated, offering an opportunity to bless others with expressions of love. That makes February the perfect month for Mt. Hope to hold a sweetheart to-go banquet, Wilson noted. The curbside pickup meal will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. Each meal will include barbecue fire-grilled chicken, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans, applesauce, a dinner roll and butter and a dessert.
care for him herself before contacting Mt. Hope. Dickson moved into Mt. Hope in May of 2021 and passed away peacefully on Oct. 19. Participating in the sweetheart to-go banquet will help Mt. Hope continue to provide care for residents like Dickson. “It’s the heartfelt gifts that keep Mt. Hope going and able to provide a wonderful place for people to call home,” Wilson stated. “Mt. Hope continues to step in and say, yes, when other doors close for people with situations like Chris Dickson’s story.” Preorders will be taken for meals and saved under the name provided when ordered. To preorder or for more information, call Wilson at 717-6828026 or email advancement@ mthopenazarene.org by Saturday, Feb. 19. Extra meals will be available on-site while supplies last. No handling of money will occur on the day of food pickup. When picking up meals, customers may leave payment in a drop-box in the form of exact change or checks made payable to “Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.” The cost of the meal is $17.
