Gretna Theatre is producing and touring “No Easy Road to Freedom,” a one-hour play that celebrates the importance of diversity and inclusion in America’s history. During February, the educational show is being performed at local schools and retirement communities. Gretna Theatre is known for its summer productions, but it concentrates on educational outreach efforts during the offseason. Gretna Theatre tours four different social and curriculum-based productions each year. “No Easy Road to Freedom” is an

educational show that uses poetry, drama and song to illustrate individual bravery and determination in the face of oppression. The story travels through American history with scenes on immigration, women’s rights, the Civil Rights Movement and more. Professional actors perform roles such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. The playwright is Tom Quinn, the play is directed by Renee Krizan, and the production is considered suitable for sixthgraders to adults. is working on a speech when Camae, a maid working at the motel, interrupts to deliver his coffee. A conversation ensues examining King’s achievements, failures, and unfinished dreams. Patterson said “The Mountaintop” will likely challenge audience members’ preconceived ideas about King and who he was. “It’s going to be a mixture of how Katori Hall and (SSC director) Jim Johnson view him and an exploration between Pilisa and myself,” described Patterson. “If we’re doing our jobs right, people are going to leave wrestling with the work about (King) and his story.” That the timing of the play coincides with February being Black History Month is a mixed bag for Patterson. “It’s a blessing and a curse,” said Patterson. “It’s great to have the opportunity to take the month that is nationally recognized as Black History Month and participate in (a play) that recognizes something so historically relevant, but it’s also a thing where you go, ‘Had to be in February, huh?’ But it’s a great start.” “I celebrate Black History Month every month, but I definitely do really go a little more extra for February,” Mackey remarked. “I really like the idea that it’s written by a black playwright because I want to be about that. It does paint a really great picture of Martin Luther King that is not whitewashed.” As for the character of Camae, Mackey describes her as “unapologetically black.”

“I love that. I relate to that 100%,” she shared. “I definitely identify with the pride and the dignity that she takes in being a black woman, especially in a time that black women were treated like dirt.” “She really embodies the three different prevailing stereotypes of black women: the mammy, the jezebel, and the sapphire,” continued Mackey. “Camae has to be the caregiver and also

activism - regardless of how unglamorous taking a stand may be. “I think this show should be a reminder that activists are human,” said Mackey. “This work is not easy and it’s not quick, but it is ultimately worth it to take a stand for what you believe in for justice.” Interested individuals may purchase tickets at www.susquehanna stageco.com or at the box office prior to each performance. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students under age 18.

she has that sensuality about her, but then at the same time she can be sassy and loud. I’m hoping I can incorporate all of those and then transcend into actual humanity.” “I like that she is not shy about each element of those stereotypes, but ultimately she doesn’t let them define all that she is,” Mackey stated. “It’s almost like she overcomes each of them as she plays into them, in a sense.” Mackey hopes that audiences will leave reminded of the importance of

Lady Bears Qualify For District Hoop Playoffs by Eric Pyles

In the world of music, many artists have opined that breaking up is ‘hard to do’ but in the world of high school basketball, repeating a title run is even harder, just ask the Elizabethtown girls’ basketball team. One year after using a 16-7 record to capture the Section Two title, the Lady Bears finished their regular season slate 13-9 and a few rungs lower in the Section Two hierarchy. In fact, E-town finished in third place behind title winning Ephrata and second place Warwick, missing the LancasterLebanon League playoffs all together. Despite missing out on an L-L postseason invite, the Lady Bears did make the District 3-5A dance and will battle York Suburban on February 18th in York with tip-off scheduled for 7pm. As for the end of the regular season, Elizabethtown finished with four straight losses after falling to the section champs in the season finale. Ephrata used a 19-point Gabi GerolaHill effort to turn back the upset minded Lady Bears via a 44-39 final in that finale on February 4th. The Lady Mountaineers needed the help of their scoring ace after Elizabethtown used the opening half to build a slim 21-18 lead. Gerola-Hill did not disappoint, scoring 11 of her game high 19 in the third, which helped Ephrata post a 15-12 edge in the frame and sent the teams into the final eight minutes knotted at 33-33. The Lady Mountaineers stepped up their defensive efforts over the final quarter, holding Elizabethtown to a mere six points which allowed the visitors to post an 11-6 edge to capture

the five-point victory. Elise Hassinger was the lone Lady Bear to reach double figures with a team high 11 points. BOYS’ BASKETBALL While the Lady Bears’ hoop squad searches for a way to stop their slide, the boy’s team had no such trouble, instead closing out their regular season on a four-game winning streak after a 78-41 dismantling of Ephrata on February 4th. The run jumped to five straight games on the 7th when Elizabethtown survived a one-point, 50-49, scare from ELCO in a LancasterLebanon League play-in game in Warwick. The Bears needed everyone of Elijah Eberly’s 23 points and six rebounds as well as Luke Pierson’s 13 points and five assists to survive the scrappy Raiders and earn a spot opposite Lampeter-Strasburg in the L-L quarterfinals on February 10th. ELCO used a 23-point effort from Braden Bohannan coupled with 10 Asher Kemble points to reign Elizabethtown in after the Bears opened an eightpoint, 17-9, just eight minutes into the game. A 24-point second quarter that was split down the middle-kept E-town up by eight at the break but that 29-21 lead began to shrink in the third. ELCO used a 16-11 run through the frame to make it a three-point game with one quarter remaining. The Raiders managed to win the quarter 12-10 but Elizabethtown was able hang on for the one-point, 50-49, victory to earn that quarterfinal slot. Things were not as tight in the season finale as the Bears ripped off a 297 first quarter run that all but ended the game before it started. Add in a 25-11 advantage in the second quarter and Elizabethtown waltzed into intermission sporting a 36point cushion.

the third to push their lead to 42points heading into the final frame. Etown eased up in that frame which allowed Ephrata to hold a 13-8 edge to set the final at 78-41. Eberly led a quartet of Bears in double figures with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists but Brady Beach drained five from long range to finish just off that pace with 15 points. Ryan Parise chipped in with 14 points and eight assists while Patrick Gilhool rounded out the quartet with 11 points and six rebounds. BOWLING Typically, a loss would dampen the mood for a sports team but the Elizabethtown bowling team still celebrated despite their 5-2 setback to Hempfield on February 4th. The reason...Warwick’s 7-0 loss to Penn Manor on the same day dropped the Warriors to 61-30, securing a Section Two title for the Bears thanks to their 65-26 mark. “We are section champs!!” said head coach Frank Telenko. “It is a great feeling...especially with two

kids on the team.” One of the two Telenko kids, Andrew, doubles as a senior co-captain for the bowling team and along with junior co-captain Eryn Moore earned praise from coach Telenko. “Andrew and Eryn, our captains, did an incredible job of leading this group.” The pair also registered the two highest E-town pin counts in the Hempfield match with Andrew Telenko the lone bowler logging three games for a 634 series. Moore opened with a 257 and added a 149 before sitting out the third game. The remaining member of the Telenko family on the team, Alaina, also took part in games one and two, posting scores of 177 and 204 for a 381 total. Ben Davis was the final Bear to bowl two games, finishing with a 349 total. Daniel Eberle filled the open slot in game two with a 175 while Gabe Berrier (122), Logan Ginder (166) and Zach Deardorff (143) finished up

game three. Elizabethtown finished the regular season on the 6th with a weather make-up match opposite LampeterStrasburg that ended with E-town on top 7-0. Ten different Bears took part

in the win with Connor Alleman posting a team high 340 to lead the way. Eric Barnes was next among the two game bowlers, going 165-165 for a 330 total while Hannah Griffie rolled games of 174 and 155 for a 329 total. See Etown pg 8

Lady Chargers Earn No. 2 Seed in CCAC Playoffs by Leah Sintic

Three games last week brought in an additional pair of wins and one loss, wrapping up the Lady Chargers’ regular season at 16-6, and setting the groundwork for their playoff berth this week. Friday night, the MC club succumbed to a slim, 34-32 loss to Millersburg in the final game of the regular season. Mount Calvary held a one-point lead, 18-17, at the half, and not much changed before the fourth quarter with MC still clinging to a 23-22 advantage, but the Indians were able to outscore the Chargers 12-9 in the final period to go ahead by two just before the final buzzer. Last Thursday, the Lady Chargers headed to New Covenant Christian for their final conference matchup of the regular season, another low-scoring affair, but got the job done in a 35-25 triumph. The Falcons briefly held the lead, 85, after the completion of the first period, but three solid Charger quarters followed, sparked by 15 points from Kara Locker to turn the tide in Mount Calvary’s favor. Haley Witmer pulled down seven rebounds, four on the offensive glass to give the Chargers multiple second look opportunities, and Julia Martin’s defensive intensity garnered three steals and five rebounds.

The victory marked the 11th conference success for the squad, having only dropped one CCAC contest all season, a mid-January loss to Christian School of York. Two days prior, the Chargers took down Covenant Christian by a 49-23 differential. This time, Kenzie Baughman set the offensive tone, netting 19 points in addition to nine rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Witmer pulled down another nine rebounds, and Locker chipped in 11 points for the MC cause. “Overall we’re playing well,” evaluated head coach Phil Ferrari. “We still have some things we are trying to correct heading into playoffs, but our main focus is getting everyone healthy and on the same page so we can give our best effort through playoffs.” Their 11-1 CCAC record has earned the club the number two seed in the CCAC West division, making them the host in the first round of this week’s tournament, slated for a Tuesday showdown against the Eagles of High Point Baptist, the number three seed in the CCAC East. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Wrapping up the regular season schedule with another two wins last week, the MC boys’ team shows no indication of slowing down, finalizing their CCAC record with a 12-0 sweep, and achieving the 20th win

Chargers’ 49-23, CCAC victory over visiting Covenant Christian last Tuesday. season home game for Mount Calvary prevented the Falcons from gaining

benchmark to give them an overall record of 20-2. “While the number of wins does not always reflect the amount of success, we knew that 20 to 22 wins was within reach this year and that to do so meant improving our play each week,” noted head coach Kory Pruner. “We learned a lot during our two losses early in the year, and 20 wins is a huge accomplishment for our program.” The final two MC conquests were New Covenant Christian and Covenant Christian Academy, both having fallen to the Chargers previously in the season as well. Thursday marked the final game of the regular season, but the Chargers were still giving their full effort,

claiming the contest 93-23, and holding their opponents to 10 or fewer points in each quarter. A grand total of 13 Charger athletes contributed points in the runaway win with Aidan Masters blazing the way, gathering a career high 35 points, cashing in on 21 of those points from three-point range. Rounding out his contributions, Masters also snatched up five steals and doled out six assists for a wellbalanced performance. Jack Hilsher netted nine points, all in the first half, to help the Chargers surge ahead, and freshman Reagan Mummau was a second half presence, putting in six of his eight total points in the final quarter. Tuesday held the final regular

and produced an 83-48 triumph over the Covenant Christian Falcons. This time Masters poured in a game-high 30 points, while Hilsher and Hunter Stewart supplied 15 and 14 respectively. “We showed a lot of improvements in moving the ball against their zone, finding openings, and being patient,” explained Pruner. That patience was demonstrated in the teams’ 16 assists, four of which were dished out by junior Damian Rutt. Hilsher’s five steals coupled with another four from Harrison Crick, sparked the defensive intensity and

their offensive footing. Despite the large margin by which the Chargers claimed their final showdowns, there is plenty to work on while preparing for tougher playoff competition. “We limited our turnovers and shot well from inside, which are two things we are emphasizing as we prepare for post-season play,” added Pruner. Securing the top CCAC West seed, the team earns a first-round bye and anticipates hosting the victor of an early week clash between Lancaster County Christian and West Shore Christian in the semifinal round on to be held on Thursday, with the See Mt. win over Wilson on February 4th before finishing up their 2019-2020 campaign with a trip to Conestoga Valley for the L-L Individual Championships on the 8th. Rachel Broomell carried the Etown flag in the individual tournament, taking third behind a pair of Manheim Central competitors. All three shooters, Broomell and Central’s Anna Haldeman and Gage McCabe, worked their way through the two rounds of action with perfect scores of 200 meaning the winner would be crowned based on the num-

ber of perfect ‘center’ shots. Broomell saw two of her shots count as a perfect center shot but both of the Baron shooters eclipsed that tally with McCabe taking second with three center shots and Haldeman taking the crown with six center shots. That left Broomell taking home the bronze. Arabella Albino, Emily Bonsall, Emma Kreiser and Aivery Shuck rounded out the top five that gave Elizabethtown a fourth-place team finish. Albino finished 13th with a 198 that included one center while

Bonsall claimed 26th with a 196 and one center. Kreiser just missed the top 40, finishing 41st with a score of 194 while Shuck closed things out with a 188. Broomell also picked up regular season All-Star honors for her season average of 99.33. The Bears did not need to be perfect in their regular season finale, topping the Bulldogs despite just one perfect 100 from Shuck. Bonsall, Broomell and Tyler Chapman added near-perfect 99s while Jagger Gilleland rounded out the scoring five with a 98.

This year, VITA opened a new location, VITA Central, at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. This site will replace the Janet Avenue site and will be open year-round to assist clients with tax services. VITA provides free tax preparation services for federal, state, and local tax returns to taxpayers who make less than $62,000 and live, work, or go to school in Lancaster County. Last year, United Way’s IRS certified volunteers assisted more than 11,000 individuals and families in Lancaster County complete their tax returns and receive in excess of $14 million in refunds. The volunteer tax preparers at United Way’s free tax preparation sites go through at least 40 hours of tax law training and are certified by the IRS. Volunteers are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. Seventeen VITA sites opened on Jan. 21 to ensure that clients receive their refund as quickly as possible. To schedule an appointment at one of VITA’s tax preparation sites around Lancaster County, taxpayers should call 211.
