Sometimes genealogist Darvin Martin finds himself in the role of scientist. More specifically, Martin has found himself becoming well-versed in genetic science. He has developed an understanding of DNA and how it is passed from generation to generation. With the advent of basic genetic testing available through companies like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com, a whole new aspect of genealogy has opened up.

The unofficial kickoff of the local yard sale season will take place on Saturday, March 2, when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will host an indoor yard sale. Shoppers are invited to search for bargains at the 20th annual event, which will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church’s fellowship hall. “Spring starts soon after (our event), so we are the first ones in the yard sale circuit because we have it inside,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers, noting that a variety of goods will be available for sale. “People bring all kinds of stuff from clothing, books, puzzles and games to collectibles - you name it.” Gray noted that more than 40 standholders will participate in the yard sale. “Most are church members, but we also have friends in the community that come every year,” she said. Additionally, a food stand will be open, offering items such as soup made by church members, homemade baked goods, hot dogs and sauerkraut, fried egg sandwiches, coffee and other beverages. Proceeds from standholder donations and the food stand will help fund the activities of the Sunshine Sunday school class at Ruhl’s UMC. “We have four adult Sunday school classes, and that is one of

them,” Gray explained. “We use (the proceeds) for our ministries and mission work. We support a Compassion (International) child and local missions in our church and local projects.” The Sunshine Sunday school class also purchases Bibles that are distributed during the church’s clothing giveaway, God’s Clothing Closet, held annually in August. “We have a senior citizens banquet that we fund every year that we host, (and) we pay for mulch and flowers for the church cleanup day in the spring,” Gray reported. On Sundays, Ruhl’s UMC offers a traditional praise service at 8 a.m. and a 10:30 a.m. contemporary praise service. Sunday school is offered for all ages at 9:15 a.m. Free parking will be available during the yard sale and the church is handicapped-accessible. All stands are already reserved. No pets or smoking are permitted inside the building. For more details, readers may contact the church office at 717665-3400. “There are huge benefits of DNA testing, but they lie in the deeper testing - not the basic ethnicity testing - which can reveal relatives,” Martin said. “You can share family trees and see how you connect.” There are some myths about genetic testing, however, and Martin hopes to dispel them during his presentation “The New DNA Reality: Forging the Path Between Discovery and Privacy,” which he will give on Friday, March 29, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, as part of the 40th Lancaster Family History Conference. “Everyone assumes their DNA is private, but that’s not the case,” remarked Martin, conference committee chair. He explained that while a particular combination of DNA might be unique to a specific person, the components of those genes may be accessed through other avenues, as they come from their parents, who got their DNA from their respective parents, and so forth. “The way that we think about DNA is an illusion because See Family History pg 9

The PAWS … and Think Club spreads the word about the positive, healthy choices EAHS students are making in their lives. Throughout the month the club will share information about mental health through videos on the morning announcements and posters in the halls and bathrooms. A social media campaign is planned to go along with the “#BeTheChange” theme for the month. Students will be encouraged to take a selfie that shows their own hand with the words “I Am the Change” written on it. The photos represent the students’ pledge to know the five signs and their willingness to support their peers. The five signs of depression are personality change, agitation, withdrawal, poor self-care and hopelessness. An emphasis is also being placed on students having the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Text Crisis Line on their devices. Students who put the numbers on their phones will be entered into a drawing for a gift card. Bears Top Elco, Upset L-S in L-L Playoffs wrap up the Bear scoring. RIFLE While the majority of high school sports teams are just getting into the postseason groove, the Elizabethtown rifle team has put the entire 2018-2019 season in their rearview mirror. After a program best 11-3 regular season, the Bears descended on Conestoga Valley High School on February 9th for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Individual Tournament. E-town finished third in the team competition part of the tournament, slipping one spot in the rankings after a second-place regular season. The Bears finished one point behind Ephrata, 988-987, while Manheim Township maintained their grip on first with a 994. Arabella Albino led the way with her 10th place finish. The junior was one of eight shooters to register a 198 but tiebreakers slotted Albino in the 10-spot. Manheim Central’s Hunter Shoop and Brayden Groff tallied more centers than Albino’s single center giving

Postseason basketball is a different animal then what is played throughout the regular season. It was no surprise then that it took the E-town boys’ basketball team a bit to find their postseason footing in their February 8th L-L play-in game with ELCO. The Bears, making their first L-L tournament appearance in six years and first under third year skipper Rocky Parise, shook off that early postseason rust to win going away, 64-48. “I thought it was a great night for us,” said Parise. “This is our first playoff game that these guys have ever played in, it was a different atmosphere.” That different atmosphere kept things close through the opening eight minutes with E-town holding a slim 13-12 lead as the second quarter got under way. The Bears finally got their postseason legs as the second quarter progressed, leading to a 21-13 edge in the frame and a 34-25 cushion at the break. Photo by Cheri Sine

E-town’s Amos Kollie zeros in one of his three three-pointers during the Bears’ 64-58, Lancaster-Lebanon League playoff win over Elco at Warwick on February 8.

Elizabethtown’s offense was not able to keep that second quarter pace up through the second half but they still outscored the Raiders in both quarters. A 13-10 run through the third quarter pushed the lead to 12 points while a 17-13 edge in the final stanza made it a 16-point final margin. “Even though they haven’t played in playoff games before, they looked like they had a sense of urgency,” said Parise of the senior trio

that paced the offense. Larry Locker topped that trio with a game high 24 points while Amos Kollie chipped in 14 points and Dylan Sweger added 10 points. Junior Brody Beach drained three triples to finish with nine points. With one L-L tournament win under their belts the Bears looked to add a second in the quarterfinals where they matched-up opposite the bracket’s top seed, Lampeter-Strasburg. After a few postponements due to bouts of winter weather the two teams finally tangled on February 13th in Lampeter with the Bears pulling off the upset, 47-44. The two sides went back-and-forth throughout, with each side coming out on top of two quarters. E-town controlled the opening frame thanks to the work of Sweger. The senior sniper drilled three from long range, collecting nine of his game high 15 points and pushing the Bears to an 11-7 lead. The Pioneers answered in the form of a 138 second run that put the hosts up 20-19 at the break. Elizabethtown regained control in the third behind the work of Ryan Parise and Elijah Eberly. Parise scored seven of his nine points in the frame while Eberly netted half of his eight points to help E-town post a 16-10 edge. That flipped the one-point halftime deficit into a five point, 35-30, lead with just eight minutes between Elizabethtown and their first L-L semifinal since 2013. The Pioneers did battle back in the fourth but their 14-12 advantage was not enough to overcome E-town, leaving the visitors with a three-point win. Beach hit two more three-pointers in the win while Locker finished with nine points to

them eighth and ninth place. E-town’s Matthew Risbon was another one of the eight with a score of 198 but the senior was unable to find the center of the target, pushing him down to 14th place. Elizabethtown’s three remaining scorers, Cole Ginder, Rachel Broomell and Jagger Gilleland, along with six other shooters, finished with a 197, leaving the final places to be sorted by tiebreakers. Ginder was the lone Bear to hit the center during his time on the range and was rewarded with 20th place for his efforts.

Broomell and Gilleland both finished with zero centers putting them in 23rd and 24th place once all the tiebreakers were sorted. After all the postseason action was complete the shooters turned their attention to regular season hardware where the ten highest averages are honored. Elizabethtown ended up with one shooter on that list, Risbon, who finished the regular season with a 99.58 average. That put Risbon in second, 0.09 behind Ephrata’s Brianna Bowers (99.67) and 0.08 in front of Nicole Johnson (99.5), another Lady Mountaineer. SWIMMING The swimming team kicked off the postseason on Friday February 8th and Saturday February 9th by participating in the LancasterLebanon League Championships at Wilson High School. The boy’s managed five top eight finishes, putting them 10th in the team standings while the Lady Bears collected four top eight finishes but finished ninth in the team standings. Ben Azzalina led the way on the boy’s side, finding his way into the top five in two solo events while taking part in two eighth place relay teams. Azzalina did his best work in the 50 freestyle where his 22.08 was the third fastest time of the competition. The sophomore nearly collected a second bronze metal, settling for fourth place, in the 100-backstroke instead thanks to his 55.75. Azzalina picked up his first relay hardware by joining Riley Runnels, Kyle Welch and Sam Azzalina to post a 1:50.97 in the 200 IM relay. His second eighth place relay finish came in the 200-freestyle relay where he was joined by his brother Sam, Runnels and Stuart Readinger to post a 1:35.30. The Bears also locked up eighth place in the 400-freestyle relay with Readinger, Chase Shelly, Andrew Donahue and Wyatt Rachael picking up the hardware with a time of 3:47.98. The Lady Bears had no swimmers make the podium in individual events but they did take home two relay medals. The team of Emmy Kriner, Rachael Handshew, Sierra Kapcsos and Lexi Fink posted a 1:50.10 in the 200-freestyle relay which was the seventh best time of the championship meet. Kapcsos, Fink and Handshew picked up another relay medal by teaming with Gabby Walsh to finish eighth in the 200 IM relay with a time of 2:00.65. The final two Elizabethtown medals came from Walsh and Fink in solo events. Walsh’s 1:02.03 came in as the sixth fastest time in the 100-backstroke while Fink’s 1:09.99 gave the junior a seventh-place medal in the 100breaststroke. Up next for the swimmers is a two-day trip to Cumberland Valley for the District 3 Championships. The district meet will take place Friday March 1st and Saturday March 2nd in the

Cumberland Valley Natatorium. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL After capturing their first section title in 15 years, the Lady Bears went one and done in the L-L playoffs. E-town drew Section Five winner Lancaster Mennonite for their quarterfinal game on February 9th with the Lady Blazers using a second half surge to steal a 5846 win. Mennonite actually outscored Elizabethtown in three of the four quarters starting with an 11-8 edge in the opening frame but the Lady Bears countered with a 17-10 run through the second quarter. That gave the home team a four point, 25-21, cushion at the break. Lancaster Mennonite used the third quarter as the setup to their game swinging run through the fourth. The Lady Blazers trimmed the E-town lead down to just one point, 3635, with a 14-11 edge in the third. The wheels fell off the offense in the fourth as the Lady Bears managed 10 points while the Lady Blazers cruised to the win with a 23-point frame. Only four players scored for Elizabethtown which was nearly as many double-digit scorers as the Lady Blazers had in the win. Marena Lonardi tallied a game high 21 in the loss with Sydney Pierson adding 16 points while Ainsley Raybold (five points) and Carly Sedun (four points) cleaned up the remaining scoring. The Mennonite trio of Miriah Wilson (19 points), Amber High (14 points) and Chloe King (12 points) accounted for the Lady Blazers double digit scorers and nearly outscored Elizabethtown on their own.

Family History from pg 5 nature does not work that way,” Martin said. During his presentation, Martin will discuss two recent cases in which DNA from genealogical sites helped law enforcement officers trace and confirm the identity of perpetrators of crimes committed long ago. Additionally, Martin will address the concept of ethnicity and the uncertainty of genetic testing for ethnicity. “It’s a false assumption that you can quantify ethnicity. Ethnicity is not just genetics; it’s also history and culture,” Martin asserted. Martin explained that because of the way genes are randomly distributed, a pair of biological siblings might test as having genetic markers similar to people in completely different parts of the world. One way in which testing is helpful, however, is in men from Western European backgrounds. By tracing Y chromosomes, it is possible to see how surnames have changed over time. Martin related a story about two family groups in different states that discovered they share a Y chromosome and thus a common ancestor. It turned out that the last name of Carpenter was the English translation of the original German surname of Zimmerman. Martin’s presentation may be attended in person, or folks may

Director Dean Sauder considered a number of plays before settling on “Bye Bye Birdie” for the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) spring musical. Sauder noted that one reason for selecting the show was to contrast 2018’s “Wizard of Oz” production. “ We are intentional about choosing shows from different eras to help give our students a rounded theater experience,” said Sauder. LMHS will present “Bye Bye Birdie” in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28; Friday, March 1; and Saturday, March 2. A matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. on March 2. “Birdie” is the story of Conrad Birdie, played by Noah Schnabel. When Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, is drafted into the Army, his agent, Albert Peterson, played by Javon Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Kathleen Calix-Alvarado, concoct a scheme to turn the situation into a publicity coup by planning to have Birdie sing one final song to a female member of his fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss.” The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on

“The Ed Sullivan Show.” Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Willa Beidler, who wins the competition. Kim’s parents, Harry MacAfee, portrayed by Isaac Harnish, and Doris MacAfee, played by Mikayla Beers, are not exactly thrilled at the prospect of their daughter kissing a rock ‘n’ roll star. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. While the story of Conrad and Kim plays out, Rosie is struggling to move forward in her relationship with Albert. Garden Spot Village Partners With Students Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) senior illustration students joined members of the Garden Spot Village Art Guild and staff on Jan. 17 for the unveiling of the Destination Garden Spot Village spring 2019 magazine cover. PCA&D senior Annie Troller submitted the winning illustration, “Through a Child’s Eyes.” The unveiling was a culmination of hours of research, planning and design. In September, Christina Hess and fellow instructor Bill Dussinger brought their senior illustration students to Garden Spot Village to experience the community and learn about the project. Scott Miller, chief marketing officer, and Brandon Adams, graphic designer, presented the vision for the spring 2019 issue as a recap of Garden Spot Village’s envisioned future. They shared the five goals for the envisioned future, fielded questions and provided feedback on thumbnail concepts the students prepared for the day. In October, 20 students submitted covers for consideration.
