Take A Journey “Into The Woods” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen Elizabethtown Area High School presents “Into the Woods,” you can expect to recognize some familiar characters, but they’ll be in some unfamiliar situations. “‘Into the Woods’ is about a bunch of fairy-tale characters,” said senior Bryan Murphy, who plays the Baker. “Everybody has a wish that they want fulfilled, and they go through a series of events to try to get their wish. But they end up realizing what they wished for might not be what they really want.” The plot follows the Baker and his wife, portrayed by senior Tori Bressler, who wish to have a child. They are joined on stage by Cinderella, played by sophomore Olivia Gable, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival, as well as Jack, played by freshman Brendan Fritz, who wishes his cow would give milk. “They are not your average fairytale characters,” said Tori. “You might think you know what’s going to happen, but there are a lot of twists and turns along the way. There’s laughter and there are

“It’s just a great show, and everyone should come and see it. Supporting local, live theater is more important than ever.” Keli Georges, who portrays the Witch, noted that as a senior, she’s excited to be a part of a challenging but entertaining show. “I really feel like we’re going out with a bang,” she remarked. Bryan agreed, adding, “The show is difficult, but we are having so much fun as a cast. We’re also working really hard.” Additional cast members include junior Elyse Hayden as Little Red,

Inside a home in Marietta, women are healing as they work through recovery from addiction. Outside the home, that healing can continue in the Serenity Gardens, situated on the 7.4-acre grounds of Riverview Tower, home of The GateHouse’s Residential Extended Care for women. Groundbreaking began on the gardens in September. The main construction - including installation of a waterfall and lighted brick paths - was completed in December, with plans for planting flowers and installing benches and engraved bricks scheduled for the spring.
Northwest EMS has a mission to support the community. To help fulfill that mission, the station signed on to participate with Child Life, an initiative that provides new toys to hospitalized children. “Our office manager’s granddaughter, Taylor, was a patient in the hospital over Christmastime in 2020,” recalled Lori Shenk, community outreach manager of Northwest EMS. “She spent about a total of two weeks in the hospital, and she had never heard of Child Life before.
Elizabethtown Area High School will present “Into the Woods.”
“When we held our grand opening for the house, we wondered, ‘How can we get the community, and potential donors, more invested in what we’re doing here?’” recalled Keith Stoudt, director of support services for The GateHouse. “The garden offers a resource beyond clinical services. It’s about helping the whole person.” Stoudt knows what he’s talking about. A recovering addict who got clean in 2005, he said he personally benefited from being outside in nature. “I know that in your recovery journey, you can get so much out of a place that provides a quiet space to reflect, recharge and center See Reflect pg 3

junior Kacy Hartman as Jack’s Mother, freshman Claire Hanlon as Rapunzel, junior Caden Zimmerman as Cinderella’s Prince, senior Tristan Lentz as Rapunzel’s Prince, senior Chloe Garber as Cinderella’s Stepmother, sophomore Catie Sikora as Florinda and freshman Madalyn Hampton as Lucinda. Tori emphasized that the students’ hard work can be seen both on stage and off. “Everyone has put so much effort into this show,” she stated. “There is a lot of talent on stage. Our set is great. Our pit is playing really hard music and playing it well. It’s just a great show, and everyone should come and see it. Supporting local, live theater is more important than ever.” “Into the Woods” will be performed in the Elizabethtown Area High School auditorium, 600 E. High St., at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, through Saturday, Feb. 26, with an additional 1 p.m. performance on Saturday. All tickets are general admission and can be purchased at www.showtix4u.com by searching for “Elizabethtown Area High School.” Tickets will also be available for sale 45 minutes before performances in the high school’s main lobby.

yourself,” he stated. “For me, I do a lot of meditation and prayer. I need that spiritual connection. That’s what we’re hoping the gardens will provide for the women here.” While the gardens are started, there is still work to be done. Plans include expanding the brick paths down to bus stops on the main road to provide the women with easy access to transportation. A greenhouse will be added onsite, offering hands-on gardening opportunities for the residents, and Stoudt said plans are in the works to create walking trails throughout the woods on the property. He noted he’s already received calls from local churches and organizations that want to volunteer in the gardens, and he’s excited about that. “ We want to invite the community in to see what we’re all about here,” he said. “We want the women here to get involved in volunteer work in the community as well. We’re doing everything we can to reduce the stigma associated with people in recovery.” And he’s looking
for additional donors for everything from purchasing an engraved brick to planting a tree or sponsoring a bench. When The GateHouse opened Riverview Tower in 2019, it transformed a late 19th-century house into a home for up to 30 women, who can live in the house for up to 90 days before moving to transitional housing. With headquarters in downtown Lancaster, The GateHouse operates a behavioral health outpatient center and other extended-care residences as well as transitional living homes in Lancaster County. Stoudt said the organization may use the Serenity Gardens as a model for similar projects at its other locations. “We are hoping the women will use the gardens as a place to relax and reflect,” Stoudt said. “It’s another tool on their recovery journey.” A grand opening of the Serenity Gardens is planned for the spring, but a date has not been set yet. Bears Post 39 PR’s in L-L League Championship
It may not have been the ending most pictured in their dreams but for the Elizabethtown swimmers, their showing at the L-L Championship Meet on February 11th and 12th was still solid. The Lady Bears ended up fifth in the final team standings while the boy’s side was one spot lower in sixth place. “We had a great meet, and a great end to the season for the majority of our swimmers,” said head coach Chad Houck. “It was awesome to see the senior class off the way we did, with many doing lifetime bests.” Houck pointed out that of the 43 total races that E-town participated in at Wilson High School’s Roy G. Snyder Natatorium, the Bears posted 39 personal best times, shaving a total of 1:49.38 off those previous best times. He even mentioned how a few swimmers position themselves to either end up at the District 3 meet or end up just
outside the qualifying cut lines. Everett Rachael was one of those he mentioned, and the freshman continued his stellar season by lowering his school record in the 500-freestyle to 4:58.39, good enough for third at the L-L meet. He added a solo fourth place finish in the 200-freesytle, setting a new school record in the process, as well as matching fifth place finishes in the 200-medley relay and the 200-freestyle relay. Wyatt Rachael, Riley Runnels and Nathan Yohn made up the other three legs of both relays with the quartet posting a new school record in the 200-medlay relay with their 1:43.86. Morgan Conway was the other swimmer Houck felt had a good chance of earning a spot in the district meet. That was thanks mainly to her solo work in the 200 IM where she finished fourth (1:49.02) and the 100-breaststroke where she captured bronze with a 1:08.24. She also took part in
the 200-freestyle relay that finished sixth and the 400freestyle relay that claimed seventh. Conway was joined by Sierra Kapcsos, Tessa Cronin and Genna McDonald in the 200-free relay and by Cronin, Ali Fink and Julia Garber in the 400-free relay. McDonald, along with the boy’s 200-meley relay, is one of the swimmers Houck expects to be just in or just out after the junior finish sixth in the 100-breaststroke and 10th in the 100-butterfly. She, along with Fink, Garber and Kapcsos, also helped the Lady Bears take fourth in the 200-medey relay, posting a 1:58.19. Kapcsos was not able to enjoy the podium with her solo work, but the senior did add a 10th place finish in the 50-free and a 15th place finish in the 100-free. Garber’s 19th place in the 50-free and Lily Rutkowski’s 18th place in the 100-backstroke rounded out the top 20 finishers for the Lady Bears.

E-town’s Trevor Nolen turned in a time of 1:08.10 to place 15th overall in the 100-yard breaststroke in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships at Wilson High School on February 11,12.
The boy’s 400-freestyle relay team of Jared Louie, Ethan Hall, Dalton Fink and Carter Ketchum enjoyed an eighth-place finish with their 3:35.81. Hall added a 13th place in the 100-backstroke while Runnels picked up a 12th place for his work in the 100-breaststroke and a 20th place in the 100-freestyle. Three other Bears managed to crack the top 20 with Wyatt Rachael taking 11th in the 50free. Jake Rudy added a 15th place in the 200IM while Connor Alspaugh was the last Bear to slip into the top 20, finishing 20th in the 100-butterfly. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Thanks to some early January winter weather, the girls’ basketball team had one last game to play, a February 10th battle opposite Hershey. Elizabethtown’s visit to Chocolate Town was anything but sweet as the Lady Trojans posted a 45-39 win. Only four players managed to score for E-town, led by Jade Love-Morris and her 17-points. Ainsley Raybold added 14-points while Taryn Hummer (seven-points) and Jadyn Lloyd (one-point) finished the scoring. WRESTLING The wrestling team capped their 17-3 Section Two title winning regular season on February 9th with a 42-24 win over Governor Mifflin. Despite the comfortable final margin, the early portion of the match made things look bleak for Elizabethtown as Governor Mifflin claimed five of the first seven matches leading to a 24-9 Mustang lead. The Bears’ Sierra Kapcsos finished the 50-yard freestyle in 26.32 to place 10th overall at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships in Wilson’s Roy G. Snyder Natatorium on February 11, 12.
Jake Rudy at 160 were the Bears that broke up Mifflin’s opening run while Bradley Candy brought it to an end with his second period fall at 285. Falls by Hayden Best at 106 and Wyatt Mummau at 113 erased E-town’s deficit and put the home team up 27-24 with three matches remaining. Elizabethtown claimed all three of those matches starting with Austin Reitmeyer’s fall at 120. Ryan Findlay followed with an easy forfeit win at 126 before Nathan Thomas closed out the match with a 9-2 win at 132. RIFLE Oh, what a season for the Elizabethtown rifle team. The Bears put a bowtie on their perfect 14-0 regular season with a monster showing at the Lancaster Lebanon League Individual Tournament. That included winning the team title, 993-991, over Manheim Centra while placing all five shooters in the top 20, including the top two, and picking up four separate All-Star nods.
“This has been a coach’s dream come true,” said head coach David Reinfried. Rachel Broomell led the way, nipping teammate Branden Rain for the top spot despite both shooters finishing with a perfect 200. Broomell got the gold thanks to her four centers to just one for Rain. Luke Turner and Emily Bonsall both finished with a 198 and one center, leaving Tuner in 14th and Bonsall 15th. Kyle Lloyd was just off that pace with 197 and two centers, good enough for 18th place. Broomell led the quartet of Elizabethtown All-Stars with her 99.33 average, falling just 0.17 out of the top spot that was shared by James Gossert (Governor Mifflin), Leksi Bender (Garden Spot) and Anna Haldeman (Manheim Central) and their 99.5 average. Rain slotted in behind Broomell with a 99.17 average while Turner (98.83) and Lloyd (99.83) also made the All-Star cut. See Sports pg 5

BOWLING The bowling team’s run at the L-L title came to a crashing halt with a 4-0 second round loss to Hempfield on February 15th. E-town’s five of Alaina Telenko, Derek Deardorff, Daniel Eberle, Zach Wentzel and Ayden Pope were all off, leading to Black Knight wins of 956-921 and 845-838. Deardorff (242) and Eberle (212) posted the only two games over 200 for the Bears. Elizabethtown earned the spot opposite Hempfield with a 4-0 first round win over Columbia. This time the Bears managed five games over 200, including both by Wentzel, to post a 941-832 and 161-953 victory.

Toys from pg 1 She said it made all the difference to her and her experience was so much better because of Child Life.” She came home and asked her grandmother if the station wanted to collect toys for the program. Shenk said the station began collecting in the spring of 2021 and so far, she’s made multiple deliveries to both Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital. “We collect toys year-round at all four of our EMS stations,” Shenk said, referring to the locations in Maytown, 186 Rock Point Road; Brickerville, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz; Elizabethtown, 380 W. Bainbridge St.; and Manheim, 60 W. Colebrook St. “We accept new toys only. When people drop them off, they should either label the toy for Child Life or let the person they give it to know it’s for Child Life.” Shenk collects the toys and makes a donation when she has enough to split between the two locations. Her aim is to deliver two to three times a year. Toys are accepted for boys and girls of all ages, from newborn through age 18. “If a child is undergoing a procedure or having surgery, he or she can come back to a new toy, and it’s just a little bit of joy for them,” Shenk

said. “It gives them something fun to do in the hospital and lets them know someone is thinking of them.” Participating in the Child Life program is part of the station’s goal to connect with the community, Shenk said. “We try to do community outreach because we have a unique window into the community,” she stated. “We see the need, and if we can do something as simple as be a drop-off location, we want to do that.” Along with Child Life collection, the station is collecting food for the three food banks in the geographic locations the station serves. “We’re collecting for the Manheim Central Food Pantry, the East Donegal/Conoy Christian Food
Bank and the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard,” Shenk stated. While Child Life collections are accepted at all of the station’s locations, food is collected only at the Elizabethtown station and the Manheim station. Personal hygiene items will also be accepted, and no food items may be outdated. Collection will run throughout the month of February, with food delivered prior to Friday, March 4. A shoe drive is also underway at the Manheim station to benefit Hope Served, a Manheim-based nonprofit that supports people with disabilities. For more information on the Child Life program or other donations at the station, contact Shenk at 717371-8282.

popular, they often sell out. “ We have people who ship them out of state,” she said. “People also freeze them because they freeze well.” Volunteers are invited to help with the fastnacht bake and they’ll be offered hands-on training, Mahan said, noting that no one is striving for perfection. “Our fastnachts are like snowflakes. No one is like the other,” she stated. “They are all handmade. No machines are used.” And on the rare occasion a fastnacht turns out that can’t be sold, it won’t go to waste. Explained Lutz, “There’s nothing better than getting to eat a reject.” Orders will be taken online only for fastnachts until sold out. To place an order, visit www.holytrinitycolumbiapa.com. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a first-come, first-served basis. For almost 100 years, Holy Trinity Catholic Church members have been serving up “a little bite of heaven.” That’s how they describe their homemade fastnachts, which will be sold at the church beginning on Monday, Feb. 28. Sales will continue Tuesday, March 1, and Wednesday, March 2, followed by Mondays and Wednesdays through March 23. Preparing the fastnachts which volunteer Jim Knapp said number 620 dozen each day - requires a full battalion of workers. “We make the dough at night, and it rises overnight,” explained volunteer Karen Sahd, noting that the dough rises in special cupboards set up in Our Lady of the Angels School across the street from the church. “The next day, it gets rolled out and rises more, and then it’s fried.” The rolling process is an allday job that begins at 4 a.m., and it includes exact steps, said volunteer Betty Mahan. “There is a specific way you have to roll them, and you never turn the dough,” she remarked. “You release the dough up from the table before you cut them. It’s a specific process.”
Knapp, who has been volunteering with the fastnacht bake for about 15 years, is in the charge of the frying room and the glazing room. The fastnachts are available by the dozen either plain or glazed, and Knapp said the latter is the most popular choice. “Sixtyseven percent of what we sell are the glazed ones,” he noted, adding that the fastnachts are dunked fully in the glaze. Knapp explained that Holy Trinity’s fastnachts are nothing like a doughnut, although both have a hole in the middle. “A doughnut is cake-based, and these use yeast dough,” he said. “Ours have a unique taste you won’t find anywhere else.” Fastnachts were traditionally made on Shrove Tuesday to use up lard before Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Easter. “We don’t use lard in ours, and we don’t stop making them the day before Lent,” Sahd said. “We actually go three weeks into Lent.” As Knapp joked, “We’re slow eaters.” In all seriousness, the sale is held annually as a fundraiser for Our Lady of the Angels School, which provides instruction to children through grade eight. Volunteer Kathleen Lutz said the fastnachts are so

Winter might not seem like yard sale season, but if you can’t get outside for a bargain, you can still find deals inside at the Ruhl’s Church 22nd annual indoor yard sale. The event will be held in the church fellowship hall, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, from 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5. “We have 32 stands selling all varieties of items,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. “Friends and family of church members and people from the community have stands. Some people have had a stand for years.” Along with yard sale stands, the event will feature a food stand serving egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, beef barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and drinks. New this year, there will be a table of new and used Bibles and devotional books for people of all ages offered free of charge. “We have done a table like that at our God’s Clothing Closet event in August in the past, but we thought this might be a nice way to get devotional material into people’s hands if we added it to our yard sale,” Gray explained. The yard sale is a fundraiser for the

missions and activities of the Sunshine Sunday school class. The class organizes and distributes food boxes for local families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter and supports the church’s participation in filling shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse at Christmas. The class also hosts a banquet for senior citizens and plans to donate some of the proceeds to local ministries. In addition to supporting the church, the yard sale serves another purpose, said Barb Dunmire, one of the event organizers. “It’s a chance to reach out to the community,” she stated. “I personally really like to talk to the people who come out year after year. I like the relationships you build with people you don’t see from one yard sale to the next. It’s nice to chat and catch up.” She emphasized that the event is handicapped-accessible and open no matter how chilly the weather is outside. “It’s a really convenient way to go to a bunch of yard sales all in one place, rather than having to go to individual houses,” she said. “People are itching to get out and get their yard sale fix, and they can do that here.” Neither pets nor smoking is permitted inside the building. Masks are optional. For more information, visit https://ruhlschurch.org or call 717-665-3400.
