Tad Kuntz
A Passion For Produce ad Kuntz, farm market and orchard manager at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, has an occupational hazard. Whenever he travels, he has to stop at the local farm market just to see what they have. “I live, eat and breathe this business,” he stated. “It’s not a job for me. It’s a lifestyle.” Kuntz’s passion for produce has paid off. He received the Outstanding Grower of the Year award from the State Horticultural Association of Pennsylvania (SHAP) during its annual Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention in February. The award was a surprise for Kuntz, who said it’s even sweeter
growing trees to running the cash register. He oversees a 50-acre orchard that includes 30 varieties of peaches, 63 varieties of apples, sweet and tart cherries, pears, apricots, plums, kiwi and pumpkins. He was elected to the board of SHAP, where he has held every office, including president, and he has served on the Pennsylvania Farm Show Food Court Committee, among other volunteer service. He’s been helping at the Pennsylvania Farm Show since he was 8 years old, when he stood on a milk crate to make change. In January, he completed his 45th year as a volunteer there. Kuntz said he can’t imagine doing anything else for a living. “I have a scientific brain, and I’ve always
been intrigued by what makes things work, what makes things tick,” he stated, noting that he has a Bachelor of Science in horticulture. “My passion is plants.” He said his favorite fruit changes with the season, and he loves the fact that agriculture is an evolving field. “There is still so much to discover,” he said of new varieties of fruits. Kuntz lives in Mount Wolf with his wife, Heidi. Although none of his three grown daughters plans to go into the business, he isn’t worried. He still has a lot of years ahead of him as a fruit grower. “I’m not saying that I don’t have bad days at work, but 98% of my days I really enjoy this job,” he remarked. “Not a lot of people can say that.”

because he was chosen the winner by his peers in the industry. “A peer-selected award is very special to me,” he said. “I have built many relationships with my agricultural peers over the years, and knowing they appreciate and respect what I have contributed is a true honor.” Agriculture is in Kuntz’s blood. A fourth-generation fruit grower, he was raised working on his family’s 650-acre farm in Adams County. His father, two uncles, grandfather and great-grandfather were fruit growers, and his grandfather won the same award in 1997. Kuntz has worked at Masonic Village since 1990. His title is “manager,” but he’s done almost every job in the farm market and orchard, from

There’s a lot happening in Maytown, and that’s a good thing. But so much is going on that at times, one organization might not know what another is up to. To solve that issue, the Maytown Civic Association was formed. “The purpose of this group is to know what each group is doing, so we can all help each other in any way we can,” explained Linda Good, who is the secretary of the association. “We have a representative from each organization in Maytown, and we’ll be meeting four times a year as a group.” The idea for the association is not a new one, Good said. “There used to be a civic association many years ago,” she recalled. “In 1960, there was a bicentennial committee, and after the bicentennial was over, they said, ‘We should have an organization here in town that can act like a clearinghouse for information. We should all work together for the town.’”

For years, that association held events and raised funds for Maytown projects, such as the beautification of the Maytown Square. “Any time there was anything going on in town, the civic association was a part of it,” Good stated. Fast forward a few decades, and the original civic association had dissolved, but the interest in promoting Maytown organizations had not. In 2019, Maytown resident Mike Guinivan proposed bringing the association back. “He said we should all know what each other is doing, because many times we plan events that are happening on the same day because we didn’t know,” Good noted. Guinivan passed away in 2020, before the new civic association could take off, but there was enough interest from others in Maytown to continue his vision. Using the constitution and bylaws of the old civic association, the new group officially launched in 2021, holding its first meeting in June of last year. “Our mission statement is to be a representative group whose purpose is to advance, promote and support local organizations and to maintain and manage the open space located within the Route 743 right of way, otherwise known as Maytown Center Square,” Good said. Members of the civic association include president Dan Blank, the pastor of Reich’s Evangelical Congregational Church; vice president Pat Vogel, representing the East Donegal/Conoy Christian Food Bank; and treasurer Chrisie Emswiler, representing the Girl Scouts. Other organizations in the association include the Memorial Day committee, the Boy Scouts, the American Legion and Auxiliary and the Maytown-East Donegal Township Fire Department. The group is working on raising funds to present a scholarship annually to a Donegal High School senior and is considering events such as a town CROP Walk or

Those two wrestlers were Nathan Thomas and Aiden Robinson with Austin Reitmeyer, Ryan Findlay, Jake Rudy, and Bradley Candy rounding out the podium finishers. Robinson did his work in the 152-pound bracket where he posted a win over Solanco’s Wade Adams to secure the bronze. The junior opened his day with a bye and a quarterfinal win over Donegal’s Ian Brown before a semifinal loss to Warwick’s Andrew McClune dropped him into the consolation bracket. There he picked up a win over McCaskey’s Tellin Cintron before taking bronze with the win over Adams. Thomas kept his season alive with a fourth-place finish despite ending his day with a loss to Hempfield’s Clay Gainer in the consolation finals of the 138-pound draw. Thomas’ two wins came over Andrew Smith (Solanco) in the championship quarterfinals and over Warwick’s Bryn Hess in the consolation semifinals. In between was a loss to Manheim Township’s Aliazer Alicea. One Bear managed to finish his sectional round in fifth place and that was Rudy. Despite entering as the sixth seed in the 160-pound bracket, Rudy found himself on the mat for a first-round match opposite Donegal’s Andrew
stepladder finals. That meant the end of the season for Gabriella Eberle (969), Kendra Griffie (959), Makenna Locke (781), Rylee Bender (778) and Pauline Kuty (756). Alaina Telenko posted the top qualifying score in that trio, rolling games of 199, 164, 229, 160, 190 and 193 to finish third in qualifying. That set Telenko up in the finals opposite Willow Hee of Penn Manor with Telenko taking the battle 177-169. Her second-round battle was opposite Lacey Slaymaker, with another Lady Comet posting a 166-164 win to end Telenko’s day. Slaymaker also ended Allison Evans day, topping her 172-163 in the opening round of the finals. Evans earned her way into the match-up with qualifying games of 180, 152, 201, 149, 198 and 200 for the seventh best pin count. Hannah Griffie was the last of the trio to qualify, doing so in eighth thanks to her 1052. Her championship run ended with a loss to Eva Brubaker, another Lady Comet, by a 234-186 final. The Bears sent four bowlers to 222 Dutch Lanes on February 18th where the boy’s took center stage for their singles championship battle. Only one of those four advanced to the final but that was enough as Zach Wentzel posted five straight wins to take home the boy’s title. “He started out fantastic,” said head coach Frank Telenko. “Then he started to struggle but kept positive throughout. I was proud of how well he performed and didn’t give up. His final five games to win the title were so good, that he was going to be tough to beat.” Those final games saw Wentzel bowl a 221, 214, 233, 230 and 235, knocking off Ryan Muckle (Conestoga Valley), Connor Firestone (Cedar Crest), David Broich (Manheim Township), Derek Warfel (Penn Manor) and Manheim Township’s Nick Tomlinson in the title game. Ayden Pope just missed the finals. His 1130 qualifying score fell just short of the 1164 cut line. Derek Deardorff ’s 1067 and Daniel Eberle’s 989 completed Elizabethtown’s championship bowlers.

MEADE GOODMAN BIERLY Meade Goodman Bierly, 78, of Elizabethtown, passed into the spiritual world to join his wife Sat., February 19, 2022. Meade was born June 18, 1943, in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, to Kathryn Goodman and Meade Snyder Bierly. He grew up in McElhattan, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and graduated from Lock Haven in 1961. Meade graduated in 1965 with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University where he met Melissa. In 1965, he married Melissa Pendleton Croft of Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. Meade became a permanent resident of Elizabethtown where he was a founding member of the Central Pennsylvania New Church Group, which has met monthly since 1969. Meade, after many spiritual conversations, joined the General Church of the New Jerusalem in 1989. Meade started his career as an electrical engineer at AMP, Inc., in Elizabethtown. He earned his master's degree from Penn State - Capital Campus in 1970. In 1981 Meade and six others started Advanced Conversation Technology in a garage; the company now has more than 110 employees. Meade was an inventive and respected electrical engineer; he was responsible for power supply designs that won influential contracts for the company. He retired after 36 years. Meade served on Elizabethtown Borough Council for 40 years and served as president for many of them. He was involved in Gourmet Club, Bridge Club, Historical Society, and GEARS. In addition, he was a member of the Masonic Brotherhood (Abraham C. Triechler Lodge No. 682, F&AM). Family, friends and acquaintances remember his deep commitment to the community and to his family. Meade loved to watch PSU football, and he enjoyed the tradition of sharing a kiss with Melissa with each touchdown. He loved volunteering with anything that involved his kids - from Boy/Girl Scouts, to making egg sandwiches and timing heats for Willowood swim meets, to coaching softball. Normally, if a prank happened in the neighborhood, Meade was involved, and if a window broke, the kids were never blamed because Meade was normally at fault. He loved his trains, and his family teased that he accidentally became the wrong type of engineer. Meade was a great cook, and he loved making his famous sticky buns and handing them out at the annual Christmas Eve party to friends. He could always be counted on for a good joke. Meade was also the master of the 15-minute nap; he could nap anywhere and did so on his many adventures with Melissa, friends and family. Meade is survived by: Son, M. Gregory (Karen) of Mountville, PA; daughters, Pamela (Kenneth) Oland of Snow Hill, MD, and Catherine Diaz of Hudson, WI; grandchildren Sarah, Elizabeth, Christopher Bierly and Kate Oland; brother, Kenneth (Linda) Bierly of Jersey Shore, PA. Meade was preceded in death by his wife, Melissa (2019); mother, Kathryn Goodman (1999); father, Meade Snyder (1985); and infant son, James Goodman (1969). To honor Meade, a Celebration of Life service officiated by Rev. Prescott Rogers will be held on Wed., March 30, 2022, in Elizabethtown, PA, with a time and place to be determined. Interment will be in the Elizabethtown Mennonite Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Meade’s name can be made to GEARS, 70 S. Poplar Street, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 or Winters Heritage House Museum, PO Box 14, Elizabethtown, PA 17022

Educators can receive free science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) kits from the U.S. Air Force through the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). Educators can be public, private, or homeschool workers as well as nonprofit advisers in community youth and educational groups. The kits, valued from several dollars to $500 each, can be ordered by Aerospace Education (AE) members who, after an initial fee, never pay an annual membership fee. AE members can also receive free orientation flights in CAP aircraft, and there is no requirement to be active in the local squadron. For more information, including a list of available STEM kits, visit www.gocivil airpatrol.com and look under Programs, Aerospace Education, AE Programs, and and then STEM Kit Program. Some school districts have created an in-school version of the CAP Cadet Program at no cost to the district. Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304, the local CAP squadron, operates out of the Venture Jets hangar at Lancaster Airport in Lititz. To learn more, contact the local squadron commander at cc010@pawg.cap.gov. The Civil Air Patrol is the all-volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude, or outstanding efforts or who embody Steven Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The program emphasizes random acts of kindness that otherwise may go unnoticed. Honorees and their achievements were as follows: Cheyenne Brocious, second grade, created and shared cards of encouragement with her fellow students and teachers; Yahir Velazquez Ruiz, fourth grade, returned a set of house keys he found to the school office; Easton Boyer, fourth grade, immediately removed and reported inappropriate notes found on the school bus; Sonja Cradic, fifth grade, used multiple recess periods to clean up debris from the school playground; Maijour Scipio, fourth grade, recognized that another student was in medical distress and sought help from a teacher immediately; Tommy Signor, first grade, returned money that he found in the hallway at school and turned it in to his teacher; and Timothy Leaman, second grade, turned in a wallet he found on the bus so that it could be returned to the student to whom it belonged.
Also, Willow Lloyd, ninth grade, took initiative in calling the appropriate responders for a friend in crisis; Briana Bender, seventh grade, helped a student in a medical crisis; Kylee West, eighth grade, took initiative in calling the appropriate responders for a friend in crisis; Nathan Woods, seventh grade, assisted his teachers and substitutes in class several times; Brice Pelletier, second grade, invited a student to hang out with him on the playground after noticing that the student had no one to play with; Masen MacCrate, 10th grade, turned in money he found in the hallway to the office; Alexander Watson, 11th grade, turned in money that he found to the school office; and Kayden Rettig, 11th grade, turned in a set of expensive headphones he found at school to the office. School staff members and police officers typically nominate students whose positive actions come to their attention, but any adult over age 18 can nominate a student. A volunteer committee reviews nominations and selects one or more winners for each month. Nomination forms are available at https://eactc.org.
AMT Nominated For Theater Of The Year The Academy of Country Music announced the nominations for the 57th Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards on Feb. 10. Lancaster County’s American Music Theatre (AMT) was selected as a nominee in the Theater of the Year category. This marks the second time that AMT has been honored with an ACM nomination. One of five venues in the nation competing for the award, AMT is the only theater in Pennsylvania to be nominated this year. Other nominees are Andrew J. Brady ICON Music Center, Cincinnati, Ohio; Blue Gate Performing Arts Center, Shipshewana, Ind.; Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, Fla.; and Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, Tenn. Known for its wide variety of performances, AMT features both touring concerts and original shows. Since 1997, the 1,600-seat venue has hosted numerous legendary country artists such as Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Vince Gill, Alabama, George Jones, Randy Travis, Merle Haggard, Charlie
Daniels and Marty Stuart along with some of today’s stars like Scotty McCreery, Josh Turner, Jennifer Nettles, Trace Adkins, Chris Janson, Martina McBride and Gary Allan. AMT has also hosted five of this year’s award nominees: Miranda Lambert, Chris Young, Little Big Town, Tenille Arts and Lily Rose. Theater of the Year nomination criteria involves industry reputation and includes buying or promoting at least 10 country concerts/dates during the eligibility period, remaining in good standing with all agents and helping to promote country ticket sales. This year’s winner will be announced during the Academy of Country Music Honors, a special event held annually in August at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The ACM Awards live show will take place on Monday, March 7, at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and will livestream exclusively on Prime Video. For more information about the Academy of Country Music, visit www.acmcountry.com.
