Mentoring Across The Miles

At the end of each year, Lee Deremer, founder of LifeCycles, creates a presentation that shows each young man who participates in the program how far he has ridden a bicycle by taking part in regular weekly and added challenge rides. “We hold an end-of-the-year celebration (with) an awards ceremony,” said Deremer. “I list all the boys who have participated by name on a map.” Deremer uses the map to create a fictional trip for each boy. “From Lancaster to State College (equals) 160 miles of riding,” explained Deremer. “(Some boys) go as far as Fargo, North Dakota, or Miami,” Deremer is especially proud of one participant who is slated to See LifeCycles pg 5

Doris Kotch Over 30 Years Experience Boys ages 12 to 18 who take part in LifeCycles take rides in Lancaster County and beyond. LifeCycles is a bicycle ministry associated with Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster. Wednesday evenings from April through November. Since the organization is now in its fifth year, some of the participants are now looking forward to getting a driver’s license, while others are in college or working in the local area. “All boys are working on the same issues,” noted Deremer. “They are trying to figure out what it means to go from age 13 to young adulthood in a smart way. They have questions to work through, and we are thrilled to engage with them.” Deremer is especially excited about an upcoming fundraiser for LifeCycles. On

Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8, a number of experienced adult riders will take part in the Do Hard Things Challenge Ride, which will begin at the Pennsylvania and New York state line, near Elmira, N.Y. “We will ride (through the night) from there to Williamsport and then all along the Susquehanna River to Wrightsville,” said Deremer, who explained that riders will raise funds through sponsorships. To inquire about volunteering, readers may email director@lifecyclesteam.org or call 717-586-2511. More information about LifeCycles may be found at www.lifecyclesteam.org.

people who shared the vision of mentoring boys in a God-honoring environment (to) give them the opportunity to grow into the young men they were created to be.” In 2014, the couple took their vision to Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster, where they met with the pastors and director of community groups. “They were supportive and asked us to bring it to the mission group,” said Deremer, who also gathered friends who shared the vision to form a board and incorporate as a nonprofit organization. In May 2015, LifeCycles held its first ride. The organization now rides more than 50 times per year. “We have now traveled more than 77,000 miles together,” noted Deremer. “That’s three times around the planet without injury.” From the middle of April until early September, the group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays in outdoor locations in Columbia and Lancaster for about 90 minutes. “We have a welcome and a message, and we stretch,” said Deremer. “We ride about an hour and then we sit down for a hot meal.” All meals are donated by people who support the vision of LifeCycles. LifeCycles is a bicycle ministry associated with Community Fellowship Church and overseen by Deremer and his wife, Marcie. The program mentors boys from the greater Lancaster area in a bicycle touring environment. All equipment is provided to the boys free of charge. Deremer said that he began LifeCycles in 2014 when he reached a point of frustration seeing young men “derailed” by their circumstances. “I could no longer stand on the sidelines,” said Deremer. “I had to see if I could bring some resources together and do something.” Deremer was specifically concerned about boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who did not have a positive male role model in their lives. “It’s hard enough growing into an adult today,” said Deremer, adding that it is increasingly difficult without a mentor to provide guidance about how to get there. Deremer and his wife began to pray about how to proceed. “(We knew) if we did this we needed to step out in faith,” Deremer explained. “We needed to find

Daughters Of Zion Group Meets Local Needs Daughters of Zion is a group of ladies that meets at Zion Lutheran Church, 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim, with the mission to assist in church and community activities where there is a need. The group, which has been meeting since 1942, currently has approximately 25 members. One ongoing project is knitting and crocheting hats and scarves to be given to people in the Manheim area. This past year, the group worked with Manheim Central School District to provide a hat to every student enrolled in the backpack project. According to group president Nadine

Mazingo, 798 hats were made in 2018; about 175 of them went to the backpack project, and the rest were distributed among six other Manheim-area projects, including the Manheim Central Food Pantry and Barons’ Closet. Group members also collect food donations for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Other efforts have included purchasing coats to be included in the Blankets for Barons community project. The ladies were also involved in providing personal care kits for Lutheran World Relief. As part of this effort, they donated

the needed items and then assembled the kits at a meeting. Meetings often feature speakers as well, with topics varying from being a dementia caregiver to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to a presentation on flowers, birds and butterflies. The speaker at the February meeting, pastor Bill Malone, community care pastor for Manheim, spoke about the Manheim Project. The speaker for the next meeting, set for Monday, March 18, at 1:30 p.m., will be Manheim Police Chief Joseph Stauffer. He will share about safety in the home and

around town. The ladies also have “just for fun” meetings such as their “I know a story” meeting, which helps them to get to know each other better. The meetings always begin with devotions and conclude with refreshments, which can be home-baked items or even a sundae bar. The Daughters of Zion group meets the third Monday of every month at 1:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church. Area ladies are invited to join the group, and there are no dues or criteria. For more information, women may call the church office at 717-665-5880.

Virtual Bike Event Planned Lancaster Farmland Trust’s (LFT) Pedal to Preserve (P2P) bike ride will change form in 2019. For more than 20 years, cyclists have enjoyed scenic rides of 6, 20 or 50 miles over Lancaster County’s rural roadways as part of LFT’s charity bike ride. This year, though, LFT will hold a virtual event that encourages riders to set out on

their own favorite loop around the county. Along the way, LFT is asking riders to snap pictures of the classic Lancaster County scenery and share them on social media. Details for the virtual event are still being finalized. Readers may visit www.lancaster farmlandtrust.org in early April for more information and to register to participate.

Lady Bears Finish in Eighth Place in Districts by Eric Pyles

Over the course of a high school basketball season, there is never a good time to be entwined in a three-game losing streak. However, just about any other time of the season is preferred over where the Elizabethtown girls’ basketball team suffered their most recent three game slide of the season. That would be as the Lady Bears worked their way through the District 3-5A playoff bracket, starting with a 53-30 quarterfinal loss to Gettysburg on

February 22nd. The Lady Warriors took control of the game in the opening frame, outscoring E-town 15-7, to account for the bulk of their nine-point halftime lead. Elizabethtown did enjoy some success coming out of the break, posting a 10-8 edge in the third, making it a 34-27 affair heading into the final eight minutes. The Lady Bears struggled over those final eight minutes, managing just three points, while Gettysburg hit their stride with a 19-point outburst. The lopsided final frame pushed the final margin to 23 points and sent Elizabethtown to the consolation bracket. Marena Lonardi drained four from long range on her way to a 20-point game which tied Gettysburg’s Cheyenne Proctor for game high honors. E-town’s offensive funk carried over into the opening stanza of their consolation semifinal bout with Lower Dauphin on the 26th. That allowed the Lady Falcons to hold the Lady Bears scoreless in the first quarter, making it a 6-0 game after eight minutes. Elizabethtown was able to hang with LD over the final three quarters and actually held a 39-38 advantage. Unfortunately, the sluggish first quarter was too much for E-town to overcome leading to a 44-39 loss. Lonardi dropped in another 20 points, inching her closer to the school’s all-time career mark of 1352 set by 1993 grad Jen Williams. Lonardi needs just 33 more points to pass Williams and move into first place on that list. Lonardi’s scorching scoring streak continued in Elizabethtown’s next game but the result was a loss to Spring Grove that sends the Lady Bears into the PIAA-5A tournament as the eighth seed. That will pit E-town opposite the District 1 champion, either Mount St. Joe or Villa Maria with that first round game taking place March 9th. As for the tilt with Spring Grove, Elizabethtown actually controlled the opening half, taking a slim 27-25, lead into the break. After the half, the game flipped with the Lady Rockets ripping off a 19-4 run that covered the entire third quarter. The Lady Bears were able to regroup enough to post a 14-13 edge in the fourth but the damage had already been done. The 57-45 Spring Grove

victory drops E-town to 16-10 as they enter PIAA play. Lonardi netted a game high 22 with 10 points coming in the final frame while Sydney Pierson added 12 points in the loss. Lonardi’s efforts trimmed her magic number down to 11 before she can claim the school’s all-time scoring mark. BOWLING The bowling team took the next steps in their postseason journey which was a trip to ABC Lanes North in Harrisburg for the District 3 Championship. The Bears sent one member from the boy’s side along with a full five-member squad for the Lady Bears. Andrew Telenko represented the boys’ squad, finishing 31st with a six-game tally of 1015. Telenko posted games of 206, 166, 179, 145, 182 and 137 leaving him 200+ pins shy of the finals cut. Katelyn Garman and Abby Chaffins led the way for the girl’s team with both bowlers breaking the 1000 pin plateau. Garman enjoyed the highest Bear finish, her six-game qualifying tally of 1076 slotting her 14th out of the 36 keglers. Chaffins bowled games of 163, 167, 161, 165, 173 and 200 to finish seven places and 27 pins behind Garman. Alaina Telenko bowled games of 133, 150, 198, 208, 144 and 154 to finish 27th while Elizabeth Vuxta occupied 30th thanks to games of 170, 161, 158, 148, 167 and 155. Eryn Moore was the final Lady Bear to take part in the District 3 tournament, taking 36th with her six-game tally of 895. WRESTLING One lucky Elizabethtown wrestler received a welcome surprise that his senior season would continue. That grappler was Cameron Olson who finished fourth at 120 pounds in the District 3-3A sectional round, missing the automatic berth in the district championship that comes with a top three finish. However, his season was issued a continuance when one of those three dropped out, sending Olson to Hershey on February 22nd and 23rd for the 2019 edition of the District 3 Championship. Olson’s season did come to a final official close with his 1-2 record in Hershey. The senior dropped out of the championship bracket with an opening round loss to Garden Spot’s Garrett Gehr, falling by pinfall in the second period. Olson avoided a winless exit thanks to a 10-6 victory over York Suburban’s Bryson Neidigh in his first consolation match but he was not as fortunate in his second consy match. That bout went to Lampeter-Strasburg’s Arik Harnish by a 7-0 final, bringing Olson’s season ending record to 30-15. BOYS’ BASKETBALL It was a one step forward, one step back week for the boys’ basketball team starting with a63-46 steamrolling of Garden Spot on February 25th. The 17-point consolation semifinal victory assured the Bears no worse than See E-town pg 14

Chargers Place 5th in District 3 Playoffs by Leah Sintic

With a heartbreaking one-point loss in the opening round of the PIAA District III post-season, the Chargers were bumped into the consolation bracket, but rallied to take their next two wins, ending up in fifth place in the district and earning themselves a berth in the state tournament. Wednesday’s 70-57 triumph over Conestoga Christian was a milestone success for the Charger squad, being their 21st win of the season. Winning over 20 games in the season wasn’t a specific goal set by the Mount Calvary team, but comes as a result of their hard work and dedication towards the goals they did set for themselves at the very start of the season.

“We worked hard at every practice to reach our goals,” explained head coach Kory Pruner. “We wanted to go unbeaten in the CCAC, win the conference, reach a district final, and a state championship. While we fell short of one goal, their determination to make states pushed us to two more wins this week.” Ball rotation and unselfish offense contributed to the win, with nine MC players tallying points, led by double digit contributions from Jack Hilsher (16), Aidan Masters (15), and Hunter Stewart (14). “They played together as a team with multiple guys stepping up. It’s been a joy to coach them,” summarized Pruner after the victory. The game that advanced the Chargers into the showdown against the Cougars was a head-to-head

battle against Harrisburg Academy last Monday in which Mount Calvary prevailed, 72-41. An evenly matched first quarter left the teams knotted at 11, giving little indication that the Chargers would eventually pull ahead to a 30-point lead, but a renewed MC squad took the floor with authority in the second frame to dominate the remaining three quarters and run away with the win. “In the second quarter, we began to turn up the pressure and many of the guys brought more energy,” noted Pruner. Tyler Masters, who leads the team in steals and defensive contributions, continued to prove he’s a threat on both ends of the floor, this time leading the Charger offense with 16 points, including four-of-six from the foul line. A. Masters evenly dispersed his 15 points over the four quarters to diversify the offense. Junior Chip Stambaugh had a quiet first half, but came alive in the second, registering all 10 of his points in the latter half helping the Chargers surge ahead. In addition, Evan Barnes netted a few crucial buckets, including a pair of treys, to boost the team’s momentum just when they needed it. “We got solid contributions off the bench which gave us fresh legs and a lot of confidence in each other for the second half,” elaborated

Pruner. The explosion of offensive success See Chargers pg 14

E-town from pg 12 sixth place in this year’s District 3-5A final rankings. Brody Beach led the way for E-town, collecting all of his points from behind the arc. The long-distance specialist connected on five of his eight three-points attempts to register a game high 15-points. Larry Locker added 13 points, five steals and two rebounds to provide backup. Despite the 17-point final margin the Bears actually entered intermission trailing by a single point, 32-31, after the Spartans posted a 17-13 edge in the second quarter. The Bears clamped down on defense coming out of the break, holding Garden Spot to just four third quarter points, while tacking 15points on to their game tally. Elizabethtown extended that 10-point cushion to its final of 17-points with a 17-10 run through the fourth.

The win over Garden Spot set up a fifth-sixth place show down with L-L foe Lampeter-Strasburg on the 28th. E-town was unable to replicate their Lancaster-Lebanon League quarterfinal result, instead falling by a 54-44 final. The two teams traded blows over the first three quarters with each side standing their ground. The result was that L-S’s six-point, first quarter edge remained through the third quarter. It took until the third quarter but E-town was able to answer the Pioneers’ strong opening frame with one of their own. The Bears’, six-point, 13-7 edge in the third knotted the game up at 35-35 with eight minutes remaining. Those

final minutes went squarely to the Pioneers as E-town managed nine points while Lampeter-Strasburg picked up 19 for the 54-44 final. Beach earned a second straight game high nod with his 16-point effort while Locker tacked on 12points as the only other Bear in double figures. With their sixth-place finish in the District 3-5A tournament the Bears will move into the PIAA-5A playoffs. There they will take on the District 1 champion, either West Chester East or Sun Valley, with the PIAA first round game taking place on Friday March 8th.

Chargers from pg 13 lead to a 23-13 run in the third quarter which solidified the Charger lead, and increased pressure from the MC defense held the Spartans to only six points in the final period. The playoff game held big ramifications, as a loss would have ended their season, but instead the win secured them a showing in the State tournament in early March. “They were extra motivated because we knew that if we were to lose, our season would end. Nobody on our team wanted that,” emphasized Pruner. The week before, the team suffered a setback losing to Berks Christian by the slimmest of margins, 55-54. Having held a 33-23 halftime lead, the Chargers allowed their opponents to work their way

back into contention, and Berks was able to grab the lead just before time expired. Though the defeat altered the team’s route through the District III playoffs, it also motivated them to respond with even more effort moving forward. “It was a crushing loss,” acknowledged Pruner. “But the guys responded well. We have had a great season and there are still some wins ahead for us. A loss like that comes with a lot of things to learn from and ways to grow-as players and as young men.” Turning their attention to those future prospects, the Charger team will embark on their State Tournament journey with a first round test on March eighth.
