EAHS Students To Present “Shrek The Musical” By Chelsea Peifer

Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) students are making final preparations for the spring production of “Shrek the Musical.” Performances are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday to Saturday, March 12 to 14, in the auditorium at EAHS, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. A 1 p.m. showing is set for March 14. “Shrek the Musical” will be directed by Christy Blaisdell and Jen Rutkowski, with musical direction by Rich Winey and pit direction by Corinne Kern. Leading the 40-person cast are seniors Jake Sevcik as Shrek, Claire Fritz as Fiona, Adam Evans as Donkey, Carter Rutkowski as Lord Farquaad, Mac Smith as Dragon, and sophomore Keli Georges as Pinocchio. A stage and tech crew of 25 students is led by stage managers Abigail Franz and Lara Hummer and tech

managers Tyler Faulkner and Jared Alvarez. “Shrek the Musical” features all-new songs from Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. Based on the book by William Steig and the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation motion picture, “Shrek the Musical” is a Tony Award-winning fairytale adventure that many EAHS cast members said they grew up watching and loving making the opportunity to perform it onstage all the more exciting. The movie released in 2001, just before many of this year’s seniors were born. “I grew up watching ‘Shrek,’ and now I get to play him, which is awesome,” said Jake. “I had to learn (to speak with) a Scottish accent, so that was tricky.” Hours of practice and watching the movie and lots of YouTube videos for insight helped him to nail that aspect of portraying Shrek, everyone’s favorite green ogre. “I’m really excited about my See “Shrek” pg 3

Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon is living up to its name with a busy spring schedule, which is keeping organizers on the run. GOTR will launch its spring season on Monday, March 16; the organization will hold a scholarship fundraising banquet on Friday, April 17; and the first GOTR summer camp program will be held from Monday, June 22, to Friday, June 26. This year’s season will include 100 teams in school districts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties using two different curriculums. The program, designed for girls ages 8 to 14, will teach about selfesteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals. The organization offers two curricula: GOTR, for girls in grades three through five, and Heart and Sole, designed for girls in sixth through eighth grades. Heart and Sole is facilitated by coaches, but led by the team members. The curriculum includes both discussion and journaling with a goal of giving girls the tools they need to navigate middle school and be successful in high school. “We are excited that in our 11th year in Lancaster and Lebanon, we have our biggest Heart and Sole season to date coming up,” said Jennifer West, who serves as program director for the organization. Girls who wish to take part in GOTR or Heart and Sole may visit www.gotrlancaster.org for more information. Readers who have questions about the program may contact West at jennifer.west@girl sontherun.org. GOTR’s Kickin’ Up Kindness banquet will be held on Friday, April 17, at Brick Gables, 800 E. Newport Road, Lititz, beginning at 6:30 p.m. According to Sarah Yohe, development director for GOTR, the theme will be “An Evening of Empowerment,” and the goal will be to raise funds for the GOTR financial assistance program. Yohe said GOTR expects 200 guests, including community leaders, GOTR sponsors, and community members. The event will feature a buffet dinner, an open bar, dancing to the sounds of Ink Vault, and a silent auction featuring at least 30 items, including a trip to Mexico, Barnstormers’ box tickets, and jewelry. Keynote speaker Meredith Jorgensen will speak on the topic “Empowering Girls,” and there will be a live appeal. “More than 53% of girls receive financial assistance,” explained Yohe. “This is a major annual fundraising event for scholarship needs.” Tickets to the banquet are on sale. Both table sponsorships and individual tickets are available. Readers who wish to purchase tickets may visit the previously mentioned website. The first Camp GOTR will be held from Monday to Friday, June 22 to 26, at the Greiner campus of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, 599 Chesapeake St., Lancaster. Camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. In the mornings, girls will take part in curriculum activities led by the

While in the show it takes time for Shrek to get used to the company of the oh-so-talkative Donkey, Jake and Adam are longtime friends - something they said makes playing the characters even more fun. Claire is also thrilled to be taking on the role of Princess Fiona. “I grew up watching all of the (‘Shrek’) movies, and when ‘Shrek the Musical’ came out on Netflix I watched that like seven times. Fiona became one of my dream roles, so it was really awesome to get this opportunity,” relayed Claire. “She is definitely the craziest character I’ve played, and she’s just a lot of fun.” Keli echoed those sentiments, noting that her entire family was obsessed with the Shrek movies. “I’ve found (Pinocchio) to be one of the most demanding roles I’ve ever done, because he has a very nasally voice, but it’s also very fun because I get to dance, and I love doing that,” shared Keli. “I make so many friends during these shows. Secondary students of Mrs. Eckert at Hershey Christian Academy recently researched local history and learned that Hershey Transit Company trolleys connected the towns of Hummelstown, Hershey, Campbelltown, Palmyra, and Elizabethtown from 1904 to 1946. They also learned that the first president, George Washington, stayed at the Warwick Hotel in Hummelstown. They also learned about a Susquehannock Native American village in the center of town and Hessian soldiers imprisoned in the Swatara Ferry House.

Place names have meaning, the students discovered. In the 1750s, Irish immigrant Barnabas Hughes honored his wife by naming Elizabethtown after her. Market and High streets were named by him as well. Johannes Palm, the founder of Palmyra, was a physician who participated in the Battle of Brandywine when he was 62 years old. In Palm’s lifetime, John Campbell was laying out a town that would bear his name just a few miles away on the “Horse-shoe Pike.” Milton Hershey returned to his birthplace of Derry Church in 1903 to create and develop the

town of Hershey. Hershey Christian Academy, which will offer prekindergarten through 10th grade in the 202021 school year, encourages students to think independently and purposefully. Teachers mentor with a grace-centered perspective in a safe classroom environment. For more information, readers may visit www.hershey christianacademy.org or call the school office at 717-312-7595.

Pictured on front: Secondary students of Mrs. Eckert (second from left) at Hershey Christian Academy display posters they made after researching local history. Participants included (from far left) Sarah Eckert, Jacob Snyder, Dakota Chestnut, Sara Marshall, Shyanna Hoffer, Lauren Kreiser, Brianna Nelsen, and (not pictured) Lyniah Hoffer.

Athletic Hall Of Fame Inductees Named The Elizabethtown College Ira R. Herr Athletic Hall of Fame will induct six former Blue Jay student-athletes at an induction ceremony in May. The 2020 class includes Matthew K. Hurley, wrestling; Casey K. Moore, swimming/soccer; Christopher D. Romig, baseball; Michelle Morris Rullo, softball; Mandi Ewing Romig, field hockey; and Stacey B. Wasserman, volleyball. The Blue Jay Athletic Association (BJAA) will also honor

former head trainer Michael Sweger with the Joseph A. Whitmore Outstanding Service to Student-Athletes Award and Martha A. “Marty” Eppley with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Induction ceremonies will be held on the Elizabethtown College campus, 1 Alpha Drive, during the annual Blue Jay Athletics Alumni Reunion on Saturday, May 9. A 13-7 Charger run spurred the team towards the six-point win. “We played a very good team and did not have a great start, but we kept working hard to get stops on defense and we were able to put together some better offensive posby Leah Sintic

session as the game went on,” noted head coach Kory Pruner. In addition to being the first win in the state tournament in team history, the contest held an individual achievement for Chargers’ lead scorer Aidan Masters, who crossed his 1000-point career threshold early in the fourth quarter, hitting an exhilarating three-point basket. “Aidan fought through being pressured a lot and some foul trouble to lead us in scoring and get over 1000 points,” pointed out Pruner. “I know

he has always been focused on winning as a team, so it was fitting that it came on a huge shot that helped us maintain our fourth quarter lead.” Masters, a junior, entered the contest 14 points shy of the milestone, and poured in more than enough to hit the benchmark, netting a total of 22 to lead all scorers. “It was a great feeling and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches,” Masters said after the game. “It’s an even better feeling knowing that our state run will continue and that we will continue to thank the Lord for our successes and learn from our mistakes.” Freshman Brett Taylor put in big minutes for the MC squad, tallying 11

points, four assists and three steals, while fellow freshman up-and-comer Reagan Mummau came off the bench to boost the team’s defensive intensity with five rebounds. Hunter Stewart’s contributions produced a double-double, with 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Chip Stambaugh pulled down another 13 boards as the duo dominated the glass giving the Chargers a collective 40-34 rebounding advantage over Penn-Liberty. “I was really proud of the win because it was one that we had to earn with a complete game,” summarized Pruner. The victory improves MCCS to an overall record of 26-2, and advances

Bears Capture First PIAA Win, Beat Mars by Eric Pyles

‘If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again’ is a phase most commonly associated with British educational writer W.E. Hickson but it easily applies to the 20192020 edition of the Elizabethtown boys’ basketball team. This year’s Bear squad ventured into the PIAA postseason for the second straight year and for the fourth time in program history but those previous trips proved to be unsuccessful with all ending in losses. That meant Elizabethtown entered this year’s state Photo by Cheri Sine Brett Taylor drives past North Penn Liberty’s Koleton Roupp dur- 5A battle in ‘try again’ mode, looking to ing Mt. one of the four semifinalists from last year’s 5A tourney, the Bears can ditch ‘try again’ mode for ‘do it again’ mode. Elizabethtown captured their first PIAA win by surviving the Fightin’ Planets of Mars Area High School, 58-56, in a firstround overtime thriller. The long trip to Valley High School in New Kensington did not seem to effect Elizabethtown as the Bears opened the game with a 15-9 run through the opening quarter. The Fightin’ Planets, playing without Michael Carmody, their star center serving a one-game suspension, answered E-town’s first quarter flurry with one of their own. The result was a 19-12 edge in the second period that

sent the teams into intermission with Elizabethtown trailing 28-27. The Bears used a Luke Pierson fueled third quarter push to outscore Mars in the frame and set up a rush to the finish. Pierson collected eight of his 12 points in the third, helping E-town post a 16-15 edge and knot the game at 43-43. The two sides traded buckets throughout the fourth leading to a 13-13 draw, keeping the teams’ deadlocked, this time at 5656, while extending the game another five minutes. Defense took over in the extra frame with points extremely hard to come by, so much so that just two were scored in overtime. Thankfully, for the Bears, it

was Ryan Parise collecting those two points to secure the win for Elizabethtown. Parise added five assists to his co-game high 16 points while Pierson nearly netted a double-double, adding nine rebounds to his 12 points. Patrick Gilhool and Elijah Eberly also just missed the double-double mark with both matching Pierson’s nine rebounds while also rounding out a quartet of double-digit scorers for Elizabethtown. Gilhool finished with 10-points on the nose while Eberly matched Parise for game high honors with 16 points and five assists. Alex O’Shea picked up the final four points and hauled in six rebounds.
