Building A Strong Community BY CATHY MOLITORIS
enise Grove has a bucket list - an actual written list of things she wants to do at certain times in her life. Among those goals was skydiving, which she accomplished for her 40th birthday, even though initially the plane didn’t start. “It was a little crazy, but I loved it,” she said. Also on that list? Making Elizabethtown an even better place to work and live. Grove assumed the role of executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February, bringing with her a background that includes serving as an event planner, speaker, coach and consultant.

“I have been in Elizabethtown my whole life,” she said. “About three years ago, I started a group here called Women in Business for all the female-owned businesses.” She worked closely with the Chamber for that group and is also active with the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown. “I’ve always been very involved in our community, and this position seemed like a good fit for me,” she stated. “I’m eager to help businesses grow and thrive, because I believe when they grow and thrive, it’s good for everyone in the community.” She said her first goal as Chamber executive director is to understand the vision of all the businesses in the community and help business

A Flair For Design BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Olivia Hershey has always been a creative person. “I think I’ve been designing for most of my life,” she said. “I used to have those fashion drawing books that I remember having stickers or cut-outs to use and I would just ignore them so I could design what I wanted to make.” For the past few years, she’s been putting that creativity to use as a costume designer. Olivia, who grew
up in Elizabethtown, is a senior at Bloomsburg University, where she recently wrapped up a role as costume designer with the BU Players for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” “I have served as costume designer on a couple of shows,” Olivia stated, noting that one of her favorite shows was “Project F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.A.L.,” a studentdriven production that was created, written, directed and designed by herself and two other students. Olivia, who is the daughter of David and Megan Hershey of Elizabethtown, is double majoring in theater and communication studies, with a minor in business management. Serving as a costume designer provided opportunities to indulge her creative side while also honing her research skills, she said. “Being a costume designer entails a lot of different things,” she explained. “At a base level, my job is to make sure people have clothes on. Then from there, you look at the show you’re doing, you read and analyze the script, you have discussions with the director ... and the other designers and try to understand the aesthetics and themes of See Design pg 10

Feeding Families SAIL Begins Food Distribution BY ANN MEAD ASH

owners who have adapted and survived through COVID. “I want to see them keep moving forward,” she remarked. “I want to do all I can to continue to help generate a vibrant business community in the Elizabethtown area. We have some tremendous growth happening within our downtown, but also outside our downtown as well. I want to encourage and support that growth.” Throughout her career, Grove has focused on helping people reach their goals. “I like to work with people and help them figure out what they want and how to achieve that,” she said. When she’s not at work, she’s busy as the mother of seven children and seven grandchildren with her husband, Greg. The couple is active with Arm of Hope Ministry and has traveled to West Africa with the organization, which provides support to children living the slums of Ghana. Bringing Grove to the Chamber was a natural fit, said John Yoder, board president. “We are fortunate to have someone of Denise’s background and experience come on board,” he stated. “She will allow us to move back to full-time hours and to expand the role of the Chamber in the community.” As she settles in with the Chamber, Grove is also focused on her personal bucket list and incorporating some its overall themes into her new role. Next up is a possible firewalk, where she’ll traverse hot coals while barefoot. “It’s about overcoming fear,” she said of the Tony Robbins-endorsed activity. “People think I’m crazy, but it’s all about that mindset of overcoming whatever holds you back. I love trying new things. I want to experience all I can in life.” In addition to her other duties with the Chamber, Grove will be available in the Chamber office, 3 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, on Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and at other times by appointment.

With the advent of COVID19 and resulting restrictions, SAIL representatives knew they had to dig deeper to help families served by in-home child care providers. “One of the things we decided to do was to look at the emerging needs of the community in response to the pandemic,” said Ryan Fisher, assistant vice president of philanthropy with Luthercare. What they found resulted in SAIL honing its focus. “Through our collaborative with the United Way and with Lancaster General Health as our partner, we discovered there were a large number of families served by in-home child care providers that were food insecure and qualified for distribution from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank,” said Fisher. By February, that research resulted in a pilot program that brought free produce and nonperishable foods to some of the families of the approximately 40 in-home child care providers served by SAIL mentors. Boxes of food, which included onions, cantaloupe, pasta, canned fruit, and fruit juice, were delivered through the child care providers to

As the days in March melt away, the bowling team continues on with their postseason. The most recent action had the Bears at Leisure Lanes on Friday March 4th for the Eastern PA Regional Singles Championship and at 222 Dutch Lanes on Saturday the 5th for the team battle. Elizabethtown sent a combined 11 bowlers to the two championship events with the highlights coming in Friday’s singles competition. The headline belonged to Ella Eberle, but Derek Deardorff was able to steal the spotlight for a brief moment. Deardorff’s moment came in the second game of qualifying when he dropped 12 straight strikes on his score card for a perfect 300. That tied him with Roman Catholic’s Evan Garland and Conwell-Egan’s Matt Coppola for high game honors. Deardorff rounded out his qualifying with games of 202, 189, 179 and 167, slotting him 23rd in the 144-
person field with 1037 pins. Eberle’s headline grabbing day saw her finish qualifying tied for fifth with Warwick’s Taylor Miller, each tallying 966 pins. Eberle put her total together with games of 186, 197, 179, 211 and 193, dropping her into the bracket finals with Danville’s Abbey Crumb, Midd West’s Mackenzie, and Central York’s Madison Brenneman for an opening round quad-match. Eberle bowled a 181 in the quad-match, finishing second to Brenneman’s 214, bringing an end the freshman’s singles run. As one of the 12 finalists, Eberle did qualify for the PA State Championships to be held at 222 Dutch lanes on March 18th. The rest of the Lady Bears slotted in behind Eberle, starting with Hannah Griffie. She tallied 863 pins over her five qualifying games, putting her 28th in the 112-member field. Kendra Griffie and Alaina Telenko ended up with just four pins separating their qualifying totals with Griffie’s 843 giving her 32nd while
Telenko finished 35th thanks to her 839. Ally Evans was up next, rolling games of 182, 116, 114, 147 and 151 to end up 82nd. Rylee Bender was the final Lady Bear to compete on Friday, tallying a 634 and finishing 104th. Despite Deardorff’s perfect game, Ayden Pope was the top qualifier for the boy’s, tallying 1056 pins with games of 171, 256, 245, 214 and 170, putting him 17th. A mere 29 pins separated Zach Wentzel’s 972 and Daniel Eberle’s 943, but it was enough to give Wentzel 52nd place while Eberle was 70th. When the Bears got back to action on Saturday for the team competition, their ‘A’ team of Telenko, Deardorff, Daniel Eberle, Wentzel and Pope competed on the boy’s side. They finished 30-pins off the qualifying mark, settling for eighth place with a 4076. Eberle earned All-Star honors thanks to his team leading 680 series. Pope checked in next with a 600 series while Wentzel followed with a 576.
Telenko and Deardorff finished with a 539 and 532, respectively. Elizabethtown was able to field an all-girls team to compete in the girl’s team championship where they finished 11th thanks to their 3182. Hannah Griffie led the way with a 540 series while Ella Eberle was just off that pace with a 535. Evans followed with a 476 while Bender was the final Lady Bear to bowl all three games, posting a 366 series. Kendra Griffie took games one (126) and two (164) as the fifth bowler with Candice Bixler stepping in with a 106 game three. Asked to sum up his team’s weekend, head coach Frank Telenko responded, “I am just proud of the way my kids performed. Derek is just a sophomore and experiencing success and how to become a future leader, and the girl’s team had two freshmen and a brand-new bowler and finished 11th,” with a final exclamation, “I am proud and honored to be the head coach of this program!!” See Sports pg 7

Sports from pg 6 BOYS’ BASKETBALL The boys’ basketball team had their foray into the PIAA5A playoffs cut short thanks to first round setback at the hands of District 7 champ, Laurel Highlands. The 55-33 loss took place March 8th with the Mustangs holding serve on their home court behind a strong second half. Laurel Highlands needed that second half surge because Etown hung with the undefeated champs throughout the opening 16 minutes, leading to a 2421 game at the break. The Mustangs more or less put the game away in the third quarter, holding the Bears to just two points while scoring 17 of their own. That took the slim three-point halftime margin and ballooned
it to 18-points. A 14-10 edge through the final stanza for the home team set the final. Matthew Gilhool tied Laurel Highland’s Joe Chambers for game high honors with 18 points. Patrick Gilhool chipped in 10 points while Techeal Gonquoi (four points) and Braden Cummings (one point) rounded out the scoring. SWIMMING The Elizabethtown swim team made one final appearance for the 2021-2022 season with a trip to Cumberland Valley High School for the District 3-3A Championships. No Bears made it to the podium although Everett Rachael had two near misses. The first came when he finished ninth in the 200-freestyle, despite
his 1:47.37 eclipsing his seeded time by nearly two seconds. Racheal added another ninthplace finish, this time in the 500-freestyle with the string of missing a district medal eased by lowering his school record to 4:52.56. The Bears also had a relay team make the district cut with Rachael, Nathan Yohn, Riley Runnels and Wyatt Rachael finishing 13th in their 200-freestyle run with a time of 1:33.07. The Lady Bears sent three different swimmers to Cumberland Valley with two of the swimmers pulling double duty. Morgan Conway’s top finish came with a 1:09.80 in the 100-breatstroke, placing her 12th. She added an 18th
place finish in the 200IM with a time of 2:18.67. Genna McDonald finished 27th in the 100-breaststokre (1:12.71) and 30th in the 100-butterfly (1:05.78). Ali Fink rounded out the E-town contingent, placing 27th in the 100-butterfly with a time of 1:04.89.

With the average farm in Lancaster County being 77 acres, Glory Be Farm in Manheim is considered small. Duane and Tina Sauder purchased the farm, where they raise Berkshire pigs, 23 years ago. Still, it wasn’t until January 2020 that they took the crucial first steps to make their small business dreams a reality. Just before the pandemic hit, the Sauders launched their pork snack
line. Fast forward two years, and the business continues to grow. In addition to online sales, several Glory Be Farm products bearing the PA Preferred label can be purchased at locations in Manheim, Mount Joy, Lititz, Ephrata, and Elizabethtown. While selling their products is vital to the farm’s success, it’s the lifestyle that makes it meaningful for the Sauders. Like many local farmers, Duane and Tina come from multigenerational farms. The ninth generation of Tina’s family is currently working the Elizabethtown farm where The Sauder family consists of Tina, Duane, Morgan and Riley. she grew up. For the Sauders’ two daughters, helping out on Lancaster County the farm is part of their normal day. Farming from pg 8 important for us to inspire others to go after their dreams because there were times in our lives that were hardships, and the dream seemed unattainable. One time my husband and I were talking about it, and my husband said, ‘Well, if that ever happens, glory be to God,’ and that’s where the name (of the farm) came from,” Tina said. When asked if she had an advice for those considering farming or achieving any goal, Tina responded, “You have to take that first step of faith, because you can’t steer a parked car very well.”

more time on the farm. When talking about launching the pork snack line just before the pandemic hit, Tina said, “People were (focusing on) getting back to their roots, shopping local. So, while the world was turning upside down, it was a good time to start the business, but we didn’t know that.” The Sauders share their farm life with followers on social media. With the popularity of farmhouse style, Tina says, many people think farming is a peaceful way of life, and they romanticize it. Using social media allows her to connect with people to share the culture and dispel myths associated with farming. “We love our livestock, and we always say that they have one bad day. …We give them the best life we can (before that day),” she noted. The Sauders’ other goal is to raise awareness. “We’re looking to bridge the gap. … Americans are at least three generations removed from the farm. … It’s our job not only to provide but to educate,” said Tina. Though Glory Be Farm may be small, Duane and Tina’s passion for farming is vast. “It’s so

the story everyone is trying to tell. Then, at least in my process, there’s a lot of looking for inspiration and researching.” She noted that she conducts research through everything from Pinterest to music videos. The most challenging part of designing a show begins when her job is finished, she said. When it’s time for rehearsals and performances, the wardrobe crew takes over where she left off. “I take a lot of ownership over my designs and my costumes,” she stated, noting that she served on wardrobe crew every semester she’s been in college and has really enjoyed it. “So, the idea that I have to give them to someone else during the show because I, as the designer, am not backstage, has been a
major challenge for me, because I want to be backstage helping.” As she prepares to graduate and is finalizing her plans after college, Olivia is certain of one thing: She’s proud of the job she’s done with the BU Players, and she hopes people will acknowledge the hard work of costumers. “I feel like costuming in general is an area that ... the general public (overlooks), because they’re just clothes, right?” she said. “However, costume designers make so many choices. From the hats on people’s heads to, oftentimes, what socks they’re wearing, those are all choices to tell you more about the story or about characters.” To see some of Olivia’s work, search for the BU Players’ YouTube channel.
