DeMolay Celebrates Anniversary

On Feb. 27, House on the Rock Family Ministries purchased the property at 10-18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, from the Elizabethtown Lodge 596 Loyal Order of the Moose. The Moose commissioned highly decorated Lancaster architect Cassius Emlen Urban to design the building, which has been a hallmark of downtown Elizabethtown since it was constructed in 1924. Urban is well-known for his Classical Revival design, and his work can be seen in other local historical buildings such as Milton Hershey’s mansion, the Hershey Community Center Building, Stevens High School, See House On The Rock pg 4

House on the Rock Family Ministries (HOTRFM) recently purchased the Moose building from the Elizabethtown Moose. Taking part were (front, from left) Bob Fox of Remax, HOTRFM executive director Jeff Kime, Brenda Crosby of Berkshire Hathaway, HOTRFM founders Karen and Bruce McCracken, and (back) Denver McDowell of the Elizabethtown Moose. Open houses for the public are planned for April 30 and May 3.

The Early Childhood Education program at the Mount Joy campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) was recently designated as a CDA Gold Standard program following a quality review of its training and student services by the Council for Professional Recognition. The CDA Gold Standard award validates and acknowledges that an institution provides high-quality programming, training, and student support in early childhood education (ECE). The award demonstrates that an education program has in place the high-quality training and student services that ECE students need in order to prepare to earn the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. CDA Gold Standard programs must include sound business policies and practices and quality student services that meet students’ educational and professional needs. Downtown Mount Joy has another gem to offer visitors and locals alike. Another Chance Boutique, 87 E. Main St., Mount Joy, officially opened in December 2019, with a selection of antiques and collectibles, estate and costume jewelry, coins, sports cards, toys, books, and pet items. Proceeds from the business will benefit Angels Among Us Animal Sanctuary, which focuses on senior dog adoption and hospice care. Owner Cindy Miller Olweiler, who was born and raised in Mount Joy, is excited to be able to fuse two things she has always been passionate about: antiques and animals. She began the Angels Among Us Animal Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization located in Quentin, 11 years ago to help meet the needs of senior dogs that need to be adopted. Angels Among Us rescues senior dogs throughout central Pennsylvania from high-kill shelters, as well as discarded breeding dogs from local puppy mill operations. “Our focus is on dogs who are seven years and older,” explained Olweiler. “ We are extremely specialized because there is such a strong need for this locally.” The organization’s mission is to help as many homeless senior dogs as possible and to reduce the number of dogs being euthanized due to a lack of funding or space.

Angels Among Us provides all of the necessary veterinarian services for its adoptable dogs, in addition to specialized care for dogs with medical issues. “ We had more than $50,000 in medical bills last year for our senior rescues,” noted Olweiler. “We’re always fundraising.” With experience as an independent antiques dealer for the last 35 years, Olweiler decided to pursue a permanent storefront option as a way to bring in more funds to support the costs of operating Angels Among Us. Once a dog is brought to Angels Among Us, it is placed with a trained foster family that provides care until an adoptive family is found. Olweiler said that the organization is fosterbased due to the fact that senior dogs often do not function well in a shelter environment. In addition to dogs, Angels Among Us occasionally cares for cats and other animals as needs to arise; however, dogs are its primary focus for now. To adopt a dog, individuals must first fill out an application before undergoing a home visit and veterinarian reference check. A meeting also takes place with all family members and current pets in the home. The process is rigorous to ensure the animals receive loving, forever homes to live out their last days. “We deal with a lot of really sad cases,” shared Olweiler. “Some (of the dogs) come from

House On The Rock from pg 1 and the former Watt & Shand Department Store building in downtown Lancaster, which is now home to the Lancaster County Convention Center and Marriott. The Moose building was constructed by the Hoffer Bros. company in stages from 1924 to 1928 and was originally used as a movie theater, bowling alley, and social hall for the Moose fraternity. From 1828 to 1923, the lot where it stands was the site of a much-expanded two story woodframe structure known as the Hotel Greenawalt, run by Col. Abraham Greenawalt, a significant political figure in Elizabeth-

town’s history. Prior to that, it was operated by Michael Brenneman as Brenneman’s Inn. Brenneman purchased the structure from postmaster Michael Coble, whose brother Jacob ran a tavern there until 1822. House on the Rock Family Ministries is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2004 under the leadership of Bruce McCracken, with the express goal of rebuilding the family unit. Through its marriage ministry, The Marriage Hub, House on the Rock has been working to rebuild marriages in crisis by offering Marriage Intensive Retreat programs.

The Marriage Hub has been holding Marriage Intensive Retreats in Elizabethtown since 2015. The ministry has helped hundreds of couples on the brink of divorce to rebuild and restore their marriages. More information about these offerings may be found at www.themarriagehub.com. In addition to marriage retreats, House on the Rock Ministries offers seminars and events for men, parents, families, and churches as part of its efforts to build strong, healthy families and churches. House on the Rock Family Ministries will host two open

houses for the community to see the building in its current state and view plans the ministry has to renovate the facility and bring the historic 17,603-square-foot building back into the forefront of the community. Open houses are scheduled to take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, and from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. For more information about House on the Rock Family Ministries, readers may call executive director Jeff Kime at 717-2998969 or visit www.hotrfm.org or www.facebook.com/houseonthe rockfamilyministries.

Hockey Player from pg 2 time for hockey season in the fall. When it came time to brainstorm ideas for a Make-A-Wish request, Blake’s parents encouraged him to choose wisely. “We told him to really think about it. Make-A-Wish makes an effort to say to kids, ‘This is the one time it’s OK to be selfish,’ Shelby shared. “I said that I kind of just want to sit down and have lunch with the Flyers and have pizza, recalled Blake. Make-A-Wish and the Flyers took that request and ran with it. Blake, his parents, and younger brother Brent headed to Philadelphia for two full days of star treatment. “All we knew was that we were going to the practice arena, but we didn’t know any of the details, Shelby said. After watching the Flyers practice on Feb. 27, Blake suited up in his own practice uniform in the team locker room and took to the ice for a skills practice with Giroux. “After (Blake’s) practice, he came back in the locker room, got changed, and they took him up to the press room where the general manager signed him for a 24-hour contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, shared Shelby. Then it was time for a one-on-one lunch with Giroux. “I kind of forgot the questions I had in my mind to ask him, said Blake with a laugh. “He was asking me about my cancer experience, and he brought up how he was talking with Oskar (Lindblom) about his cancer experience. Lindblom, a Flyers forward, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in December 2019 and was out for the season for treatment. Make-A-Wish sent the Stiegaufs to Dave & Buster’s that evening and to the Franklin Institute for the day on Feb. 28 before the evening game. “We knew that Blake needed to wear a suit to the game Friday night, but that was it, Shelby said. “We had limo transportation to the rink, where he went into the player entrance and was escorted back to a guest locker room and had a full Flyers uniform with his name and number on a jersey. Blake suited up, announced the starting lineup in the locker room and led the team out of the tunnel onto the ice. He then took his official solo “rookie lap before taking a shot on goalie Carter Hart and warming up with the team. To top off the whole experience, Blake got to do a press interview with Giroux, who scored two goals in the Flyers’ win over the New York Rangers that night. “Make-A-Wish and the Flyers went so far above and beyond what we ever anticipated, remarked Shelby. “How do you ever say thank you for something like this?

Mount Joy Township Appliance & Tire Pickup

by Eric Pyles

The saying goes that all good things must end. For the Elizabethtown boys’ basketball team that meant their fantastic and historic 2019-2020 season had to end some time. For the Bears, that end came with a March 10th PIAA-5A second round clash opposite Archbishop Ryan that went to the Raiders by a 67-39 final. The loss puts Elizabethtown’s final record at 20-10. “We didn’t get the section championship or league championship or the district championship but we played later and went farther than any other

came early, allowing Archbishop Ryan to steal a one-point, 10-9, edge coming out of the opening frame. The Raiders built on that momentum, turning it into a 167 second quarter run that put E-town in a 10-point, 26-16, hole at the break. The defensive adjustments came at halftime for Archbishop Ryan and left Elizabethtown searching to find their offense. The uncertainty allowed Ryan to post a 19-13 edge coming out of the break, extending their lead to 16-points at 45-29. Despite a double-digit cushion entering the final eight minutes the Raiders kept their foot on the gas leading to a 22-10 advantage in the frame,

Chargers End Season With 26-3 Record by Leah Sintic

A second round PIAA tournament loss, 77-59, to Nativity BVM last Tuesday, March 10, brought the Chargers’ historic 2019-2020 season to close. The Mount Calvary club entered the contest riding a 22-game win streak, ready to take on Nativity, the champions of District XI, at the second-round showdown held at the Geigle Complex in Reading. Nativity gained the upper hand early with a 21-12 first quarter, but the Chargers are known for their late game resurgence and constantly battled to reduce the deficit. MC put together a stronger second period (17-15), that brought them within six points less than

team in the history of our program,” said head coach Rocky Parise. “That is something pretty cool to hang our hats on and I think the guys are pretty proud.” Parise mentioned missed layups and struggles adapting to the Raider’s defensive strategies as the culprit for the loss. “It was a bunch of things like that, just culminating in an ugly night,” said Parise. “I don’t think that team is 28points better than us and I don’t think anybody in our locker room did either but that happens sometimes and we had to accept it and be thankful for the great season we had.” The missed layups Parise mentioned

two minutes before the midway break. Despite their regrouping, Nativity found ways to answer, including a halfcourt buzzer beater that gave them an extra boost heading into the half as well as a 38-27 advantage. Aidan Masters led the Charger offense, accruing 18 points, supported by double-digit contributions from Jack Hilsher and Hunter Stewart with 10 each. “The final game was tough because we didn’t play our absolute best game and still had an opportunity to keep it close against a really good team,” commented head coach Kory Pruner. Though their run has come to an end, reflecting back on the accomplishments of the season creates quite the list of accolades, including a CCAC conference

title, a first ever District III basketball championship, and the team’s first ever PIAA state tournament victory, a 63-57 win over North Penn Liberty in round one. “I am proud of how we built and maintained a high level of character while at the same time keeping our expectations high throughout the season,” Pruner stated. The season’s stats and 26-3 overall record are impressive by any standard, but for this year’s graduating seniors, the meaningfulness of the year was particularly poignant. “It’s been great getting to see how our team matured,” expressed senior captain Harrison Crick. “We always strived to work hard and never give up.

the 67-39. “It just wasn’t supposed to be our night,” said Parise. Six different Bears cracked the scoring column led by Ryan Parise with 16 points. Parise added three rebounds and two assists to his team high point tally. Fellow senior Elijah Eberly was the only other E-town player to crack double digits with 11 points, leaving him just shy of the 1,000-point club with 975 for his career. Eberly finished the game with a double-double, adding two assists and two steals to his 10 rebounds. Alex O’Shea (four points), Patrick Gilhool (four points), Luke Pierson (three points) and Brenden Lehman (one point) rounded out the remainder of the scoring for Elizabethtown. As a senior it’s been great to see the younger guys grow spiritually and physically both as teammates and basketball players.” Having closed the books on the season, lifelong lessons have been learned and growth beyond the basketball court has certainly been a result that will continue to produce great things in these student athletes. “The defining characteristic of the season was accountability. They were accountable to each other for their attitude, effort, execution and testimony during games and practices, pushing each other to be better and building each other up when they fell,” summarized Pruner. “We wanted to focus on God, team and others. With that outward focus, a strong inward focused bond was built.”

Neighbors Group To Host Chalk Talk

The choir and organist-choirmaster Paul Reese will present a service of Choral Evensong and a half-hour organ recital on Sunday, March 22, at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Church, East Market and Chestnut streets, Marietta. This will be the second return visit of this choir and Reese, organist-choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster. The service will include Scripture, prayer, and music - a tradition that began in cathedrals and university chapels in England and spread across the entire English-speaking world. The main choral singing will include settings by John Dykes of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis texts, the two traditional choral pieces in this ser-

vice. Dykes is known around the world for his hymn tune to the “Holy, Holy, Holy” text and in the U.S. as well for the music of the Navy hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save.” The choir will also sing the anthem “Give Ear, O Lord, and Visit Me” by James A. Rogner, a late 20th-century Chicago-area church choir director. Dr. Karl E. Moyer, co-organist at the Marietta church, will accompany the choir. The Rev. Regina Bautista, rector of the Marietta church, will read the parts of the service that are commonly spoken, and Reese will intone those texts that are usually sung. The congregation will be invited to join the choir in singing several hymns.

A sermon or organ recital is often added to the Choral Evensong service, and Reese will precede the musical prayer service with a half-hour of organ music on the church’s organ. The major work of his recital will be the Prelude and Fugue in E-Flat by Bach. The fugue is often referr to as the “St. Anne Fugue.” Two other organ pieces will round out the recital, and at the close of the Evensong service, Reese will play “Piece Heroïque” by César Franck. A reception will follow in the social hall, where the congregation may greet Reese and the choir. For more information, readers may contact Bautista at 717-557-3682.

Central Penn College and Widener University Commonwealth Law School have partnered to offer a “2+3” agreement that will allow students to earn a law degree in five years. A signing ceremony was held on Jan. 30 at Widener’s administration building in Harrisburg and was attended by leaders, faculty and staff members from both institutions. Under this 2+3 agreement, Central Penn students in a bachelor’s program can now transfer to Widener Law Commonwealth after just two years or 90 credits, with the final 30 credits earned while attending law school. These same credits will be used toward a law degree, as well. To qualify for the 2+3 program, Central Penn students in a bachelor’s program must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) no later than February of their junior year and are encouraged to

take it earlier if possible, earn an LSAT score at or above the median for Widener’s prior year entering class and have no disqualifying character issues With locations in Summerdale and Lancaster, Central Penn College offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees and certificate programs in a variety of professional fields. Central Penn College and Widener University Commonwealth Law School joined forces recently on a “2+3” agreement that makes earning a law degree in five years a reality for highly motivated, high-achieving students. Typically, attaining a law degree takes seven years. Dr. Linda Fedrizzi-Williams, president of Central Penn College, and Christian A. Johnson, dean of Widener Law Commonwealth, made the 2+3 program official by signing an articulation agreement between the two educational institutions. The signing ceremony was held on Jan. 30 at Widener’s administration building in Harrisburg and was attended by leaders, faculty and staff members from both institutions. The articulation agreement enables legal studies students at Central Penn to earn their final 30 credits of their bachelor’s degree at Widener Commonwealth Law, while simultaneously pursuing their juris doctorate at the Harrisburgbased institution. Upon successfully completing 30 credits at Widener Law Commonwealth, students in the program then will have earned their baccalaureate degree from Central Penn College. Central Penn College operates on an accelerated schedule of four, 11-week terms each year, which enables students - if they take 12 credits or more per term - to complete a bachelor’s in three years.
