But by using a scramble method of play, some of the pressure is taken off the individual knowing they have a partner. We stress this is a friendly competition, but there is still an element of ‘butterflies’ when you really need to make a good golf shot.” Teams are paired based on their combined handicaps and indexed according to the United States Golf Association (USGA) rating of the course. program that instructs participants on how to control bleeding in an emergency situation.” All of the sessions are designed to improve the lives of students of all ages and abilities by effectively resourcing educators, professionals, parents, and others who have an interest in education. The theme of the conference is “Together … We Can Do So Much.” Swisher noted that the title is part of a quotation from Helen Keller, who said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” “When we work together for a common purpose, we can achieve things beyond our greatest imagination. This is especially true in education where we share the common goal of making a positive difference in the lives of students and their families,” said Kathy Rose, early childhood and special education services program director for IU 13. “This year’s conference focuses on collaborating and working as a team to educate all students through innovative approaches to teaching. IU 13 welcomes everyone who believes that each and every day ‘together we can do so much.’” The keynote speaker for the conference will be Jeremy Anderson, who has become an author, businessman, and motivational speaker after recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. Anderson struggled to succeed in school, but he now holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees. During his address, “Diamond in the Rough,” Anderson will reveal how challenges can be used to develop endurance and previously concealed abilities within educators and students. He will also focus on establishing an environment in which student rapport and academic success can be cultivated, using his story to tie in strategies to engage at-risk students. During the morning breakout sessions, Anderson will lead a discussion on building allies in the classroom in order to help troubled students recognize their full potential. The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will open at 7:45 a.m., and a continental breakfast will be available. Attendees may visit sponsors’ tables and enter to win prizes from local businesses. Lunch will be provided and, along with breakfast, is included in the cost of attendance. E-town Baseball Moves to 3-2 Overall by Eric Pyles

Kyle Welch circles the bases after ripping a home run for the Bears during their 18-4 Section Two loss to visiting Lampeter-Strasburg last Monday.

If life is a dance then the Elizabethtown baseball team is in the middle of a one step forward, one step back version of the two-step. E-town has opened the season win-loss-win-losswin leaving the Bears 3-2 overall a quarter of the way through the season. The second of the two losses was a 14-2 defeat at the hands of Lampeter-Strasburg on April 1st. Elizabethtown was never able to get their bats going, tallying just five hits while the Pioneers rapped out 17 hits on their way to the victory. Starting pitcher Hunter Murry absorbed the brunt of those hits, 10 to be exact, which led to eight L-S runs, handing the sophomore the loss for his two and two-third innings. Zach Malone and Tyler Souders covered the final three and one third innings and six Pioneers runs. The trio combined for four strikeouts and three walks. Kyle Welch accounted for two of the five Elizabethtown hits with his

fourth inning blast breaking up the L-S shutout and making it an 8-1 affair. Cole Livingston picked up his lone hit in the first but it was his fifth inning sac fly that gave E-town their second run of the contest. Souders and Luke Adams picked up the final two Bear hits. Elizabethtown bookended that loss with two wins starting with a 5-4 extra innings victory over Conestoga Valley on March 29th. This time Murray enjoyed the win for his relief of starter Michael Baker. Murry surrendered just two hits over the final three innings, holding the Buckskins scoreless in the process, allowing the Bears to complete the comeback. Baker struck out six and walked three to go along with seven CV hits and all four of their runs during his five innings of work. Malone’s eighth inning double, his lone hit of the contest, proved to be the game winner, pushing across pinch runner Weston Kolaric. Kolaric subbed in for Jake Black who earned

his base via hit by pitch. Black added a third inning fielder’s choice RBI to his hitless game. Baker also enjoyed a third inning RBI via fielder’s choice making it a 4-3 game after three innings. Nick Kreider’s lone hit of the game accounted for Elizabethtown’s fourth inning run while one of Cole Livingston’s three singles pushed E-town’s initial run across in the second. Elizabethtown rebounded from the L-S loss with an 8-6 victory over Lebanon on April 3rd. Kreider picked up the win despite all six Cedar runs scoring during his three and one-third innings. During that time, he allowed eight hits to go with six strikeouts and two walks. Baker and Cole Patrick combined for four strikeouts and two walks with just one Lebanon hit over the final three and two-third innings. Black paced the offense with the lone multi-hit game with his two run first inning single helping to put the Bears up early. Livingston was unable to collect a hit but did drive in two runs thanks to a fourth inning error.

Patrick, Adams and Matt Ramsey rounded out the offensive leaders with one hit and one RBI apiece. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team got into the win column on April 2nd, blanking Cedar Cliff 11-0 to earn first year head coach Cassidy Bender her first career victory. Cam Poulos led the offense with three goals while Duncan Keller backstopped the defense with eight saves. Sam Azzalina added two scores while Jacob Wivell, Chad Heisey, Matt Pottgeiser, Drew Shaffer, Caleb Lord and Caleb Gerber all tallied one goal in the win. Before the Bears could get to their first win, they had to endure losses to Warwick and Penn Manor. First up was a 13-7 loss to Warwick on March 28th that saw the Warriors outshoot E-town 32-19. That left Keller with

17 saves in the loss. Alex Hartman and Sawyer Smith picked up two goals each with Hartman adding three assists. Pottgeiser, Heisey and Azzalina accounted for the final three scores. The Bears kicked off April with a trip to Millersville that resulted in a 15-4 Penn Manor victory. Hartman was at the forefront of the offense despite just one score as his passing set up both of Wivell’s two goals as well as the lone score from Poulos. Keller finished the loss with 14 saves. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team evened their overall record to 2-2 by knocking off Garden Spot on April 2nd. The Bears eked out wins of 26-24, 25-23 and 25-23 to leave New Holland with the sweep. See E-town pg 14

Chargers Win Three of Four in Six Days by Leah Sintic

knotted at two until Stewart produced his second double of the day in the top of the sixth. After stealing third, Stewart’s heads up base running allowed him to score the go-ahead run on an error by the Lion catcher. Eager to put the game away, the Chargers came out swinging in the seventh, including a RBI single from A. Masters, and a two run double off the bat of Wyatt Lamb, who went on to score MC’s seventh run on a wild pitch. “As a team, we need to continue working on putting the ball in play; we struggled with contact early on,” noted Sintic. “I was proud of the adjustments we made at the halfway point of the game.” Tuesday’s 6-3 home field loss to Christian School of York marked Mount Calvary’s first defeat of the season. The Chargers worked their way to a 3-1 advantage after four frames, but CSY managed to string together back-to-back strong at bats, to surge ahead. Stewart got the team off to a great

start from the hill, throwing seven strikeouts, walking two batters, and surrendering zero earned runs. “Hunter pitched great. We weren’t able to back him up defensively as well as we have been most of this season,” described Sintic, referring to the uncharacteristic four fielding errors. Momentum shifted in favor of the Crusaders after an RBI double from CSY’s centerfielder Ryan Quigley, his second double of the day, driving in the go ahead run in the sixth. A. Masters led the Charger bats, claiming two of their five hits, Stewart, Tyler Masters, and Damian Rutt each had one. “As a team we look at this game like any other, an opportunity to learn and grow from our mistakes,” summarized Sintic after the loss. “We did many things well, and I’m proud of our fight.” It was a long, chilly evening under the lights for Monday’s dual against Steelton-Highspire before the Chargers pulled away in the sixth to claim the game, 14-4, over

The Chargers ended the contest early, racking up the 10-run lead thanks to a three-run sixth inning performance that displayed patience at bat, including two walks, two hit batters, a RBI single from D. Nate Seeger led the way with 20 assists and three aces with Jacques Mortha posting a team high seven kills. Jake Sevcik added five digs and Casey Lyons two blocks. The Bears’ second loss of the season came on March 29th to an Exeter Township team that began the season ranked in the PA Volleyball Coaches Association Top 10. The result was a 3-0 loss (25-8, 25-17, 25-9). Nick Chapman tallied a team high six kills while Sevcik added two aces and nine digs. Seeger finished with 12 assists, two digs and one block while Mortha added three kills, two digs, one assist, one block and one ace. In between the two regular season matches the Bears made a trip to Denver to participate in Cocalico’s tournament. E-town finished the day 6-5 overall and 5-4 in pool play with a 3-0 win over Wyomissing accounting for the bulk of their pool play wins. That 3-0 mark combined with 1-2 records against Ephrata and Hershey gave E-town their 5-4 pool play mark. A first round victory over Cedar Cliff and another setback opposite Hershey in the quarterfinals finished the 6-5 day. TENNIS The boy’s tennis team continued their strong season with wins over Ephrata and McCaskey to improve to 6-1. E-town blanked McCaskey on April 3rd was a 7-0 final where only Ethan Lown’s match against William Fenimore offered any suspense. Fenimore took the opening set 6-4 forcing Lown to play from behind to win 6-3 and 10-2 to take the match. Nacho Bartolome, Trent McBride and Evan Schneider all claimed their singles match with straight sets sweeps with Bartolome’s 7-5 first set win the only close match. The doubles pairings of Lown and McBride and Jon and Chris Gartley each enjoyed 8-3 wins while Bartolome and Schneider got by Chad Haiges and Ermias Wogari 8-2 in number two doubles. The Bears only non-sweep win of the season came on April 1st, a 5-2 win over Ephrata. Elizabethtown had to sweat out all but their number three doubles win where the Gartley brothers posted an 8-3 victory. Bartolome and Schneider gave E-town their second doubles win, this one by a much closer 8-6 final. Bartolome also earned one of the three singles wins, topping Ellis Martin 7-5, 7-5. McBride needed three sets to get by Jaron Wenger while Lown topped Chase Wilson 6-3, 7-6. SOFTBALL The softball team moved themselves to the right side of .500 with wins over Conestoga Valley and Lebanon offsetting a 13-0 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on April 1st. Kristin Geesey took that loss with Alyssa Hamilton getting a bit of time in the circle in relief. Hayden Calaman picked up the lone Lady Bear hit with her fifth inning single. E-town closed out March with a 103 win over CV with Geesey tossing a complete game. Sadie Seaman carried the big bat with two hits and three RBI while Makenzie Cummings, Jessica Zimmerman and Megan Gray added one hit each, contributing to Etown’s eight run fourth with Cummings and Seaman each adding two

three-for-four. Stewart started and ended the game on the mound, registering his own save, striking out three and

allowing zero hits or runs in nearly three innings pitched. During Columbia’s final at bat, the Crimson Tide managed to get the tying run on base with one out, but left fielder, Nate Lerro, and center fielder, David Ellis, snagged two difficult pop ups to capture the

remaining two outs and close the contest. “Nate got a great read on a tough line drive to save a run, and David’s speed on the looper down the left field line allowed him to make an amazing catch,” Sintic described of the final two outs.

This time it was the first inning, paving the way for Brooke Bryan’s easy win in the circle. The freshman allowed two hits and two runs to go with four strikeouts. Hamilton had just one hit but drove in two runs thanks to a sac fly in that big opening frame. Calaman, Gray and Brianna McCaulley all added one hit and one RBI while Cummings drove in a run without registering a hit. TRACK The track teams suffered a double loss with a trip to Lebanon on the 1st with the boy’s team falling 79-71 and the girls 85-65. Derek Heisey accounted for three of the Bears seven wins with two coming in a hurdles sweep. He also took the top spot in the high jump by clearing 5-8. Frank Miele (shot put), Steven Dixon (discus), Jesse Myers (javelin) and Collin Hudak (long jump) finished up the winning for E-town. Katie Locker paced the Lady Bears with two solo wins to go with a leg of the winning 3200m relay. Locker won 800m and 1600m after teaming with Madeline Quinn, Sierra Kapcsos and Cat Shontz to win the 3200m relay. Quinn finished the distance sweep with a win in the 3200m while both Alicia Underkoffler (100H and 300H) and Megan Rider (long and triple jumps) added two wins apiece. Carly Sedun (shotput) and Olivia Anson (discus) earned the final solo wins with the 400m relay team

One hundred years have passed since the Marietta Community House (MCH) was donated to the people of Marietta by the Hiestand family in memory of Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who was killed while serving during World War I. In remembrance of the reason for the donation of this historic building and to recognize the service of Marietta veterans, the MCH board has planned a Veterans Day agenda for this centennial year of its existence. Using the service of Benjamin as a springboard, the Community House plans to compile a registry of all Marietta residents who are currently serving or have served in the Armed Forces. Fairly detailed records up to World War II are available for those Marietta Borough enlistees who were in the military during a conflict, but records since that time are scarce. The MCH board is

GSS Launches Campaign Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is a Chester County- and Lancaster County-based organization that provides emergency shelter and transitional and permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness. To honor the 10th anniversary of CEO Nate Hoffer’s leadership at Good Samaritan Services (GSS), GSS board and staff have launched a campaign to fund permanent housing rental assistance for the organization’s Bridge of Hope @ GSS program.

Through the “It’s Good to Be Home!” campaign, GSS is seeking businesses, churches, schools, community groups and individuals to make donations or set up fundraising teams to help avert eviction and homelessness for single women with children in Chester and Lancaster counties. Manheim Central Lunch Crew Supports Kraybill Program Around noon on a recent Tuesday, seventh- and eighth-graders at Kraybill Mennonite School walked into the multipurpose room at the school, stopping at a long table to pick up a hot lunch. Standing behind the table were members of the “lunch crew” from Manheim Central High School. Clad in aprons, hats and food service gloves, they spooned up pasta, mixed vegetables and watermelon

onto the students’ plates. On this day, the lunch and cleanup crew consisted of five special-needs students in Manheim Central’s life skills support class who are learning the real-world skills needed in food service work. Led by teacher Gail Troutman and accompanied by aides and an occupational therapist, this class, with a total of eight students, visits Kraybill on Mondays and Tuesdays. On Wednesdays or Thursdays, students in Manheim Central’s

Intro to School to Work class, led by teacher Kim Hatfield, serve lunch at Kraybill. Kraybill parents volunteer for lunch duty on the remaining two days. A food vendor delivers the food to the school, which does not have a cafeteria. After students are handed their lunch plates, they return to their classrooms to eat. The cooperative project between Manheim Central’s special education program and Kraybill, a private Christian school in Mount Joy, began last fall, when Kraybill began serving hot lunches to its 120 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Both Troutman and Kraybill’s principal, M.J. Smith, described the public-private partnership as a “win-win” situation that benefits both the special-needs and Kraybill students. According to Smith and Sarah Schaefer, a Kraybill parent and board member, Kraybill’s board decided to begin the hot-lunch program as part of the transition to becoming independent from the Lancaster Mennonite School organization. The plan is to keep the school open despite decreased enrollment. Other incentives, such as lowering tuition rates and adding Spanish instruction and before-school child

care, have helped reverse that trend, Smith and Schaefer said. Kraybill will become fully independent on Monday, July 1, which is also the start of the school’s 70th year, Smith pointed out. “It’s been a vital part of the community. It’s the center of life for many people. They just have great memories of being here,” she said. The school never had a hotlunch program before. “We wanted to provide that option,” said Smith. As the possible lunch program was being discussed, Schaefer, who is supervisor of pupil services for the Cornwall-Lebanon School District, suggested that special-needs students could be of help while also getting some much-needed work experience. Local districts were contacted, and Manheim Central was able to sign on. In addition to serving the food, the Manheim Central students count and wrap silverware in napkins based on how many students sign up for a hot lunch on any given day. On a recent Tuesday, student Isaiah Collins busied himself at a chalkboard, recording the count for each class. Student Dustin Martin said he enjoys wrapping up the utensils. Kayla Boyer likes doing the dishes. After finishing their own lunches, Kayla and Isaiah, accompanied by paraeducator Amy Dissinger and personal care assistant Karen Beck, collected bins of dishes and took them to the kitchen to be cleaned off and loaded into dishwashers, with Dustin joining them for that task. Troutman pointed out that Kayla had the chance to do dishwashing work at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. “The skills that she’s been learning here are opening her to some other opportunities,” Troutman said. While Troutman’s students may not have the same communication skills as other students, she has seen them grow socially through their interaction with the Kraybill students. It’s like “welcoming a friend that we see every Monday and Tuesday,” she added. At Christmastime, the Kraybill students made a big thank-you poster for the Manheim students, which hangs in their classroom. As Troutman put it, “It’s now stretched our community to include (people) outside of our own school.”
