founding members of the program, was shown. “(Nestleroth) talked about the heart behind starting a program like this to reach out to students,” said Stephanie Smith, assistant director of Bible2School. See Bible2School pg 12
When nursery teacher Dawn realized that Sherry, the mother of one of her students, was on the verge of homelessness, she connected her to Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services (GSS). The program saved Sherry, the mother of four, after a family conflict jeopardized their living arrangement. Dawn also pulled together a “neighboring” group at their church, which became an essential support system for Sherry during her two years in the Bridge of Hope program. Through those essential two See Golf Outing pg 13

Bears Win Back-to-Back Five Set Matches by Eric Pyles
Ask any high school volleyball team if they like playing five set matches and the most common answer would be no but the Elizabethtown boys’ team would be one of the few that might answer yes. The reason, back-to-back five set wins have the Bears in sole possession of second place in Section Two with just over two weeks remaining in the regular season. The first of those five set wins came on April 15th when Cocalico came to town. E-town dropped the opening set 25-20 but laid the groundwork for the 3-2 victory by outlasting the Eagles 33-31 in a marathon second set. The Bears kept control and positioned themselves for the win by taking the third set 25-23. Cocalico had other ideas and knotted the match at 2-2 with a 25-21 win in the fourth set. Elizabethtown was able to secure the victory with a 15-8 win in
the deciding set. Nate Seeger dished out 55 assists to go with two aces. Jacques Mortha tallied 18 kills and four blocks. Jake Sevcik added 33 digs to the winning effort. One day later, E-town topped Lancaster Mennonite by the same 3-2 final. This time the Bears found themselves on the ropes thanks to 27-25 and 25-18 Blazer wins to open the match. Elizabethtown bounced back with three straight wins (25-21, 25-13, 17-15) to leave town with the victory and a 7-3 overall record. Seeger’s monster game included 47 assists, 13 digs and one ace with Nick Chapman adding 13 kills, 15 digs and one ace. Mortha collected 20 kills and Sevcik 20 digs while Gavin Gilhool chipped in with four blocks. TRACK The track teams made their annual trip to Landisville for the Blank Knight Invitational on April 13th and came home with 16 podium performances. Two of those involved gold medals with the highlight being the Lady Bears’ 3200m relay team of Madeline Quinn, Cat Shontz, Sierra Kapcsos and Katie Locker. The quartet’s 9:24.29 not
only broke Hershey’s year-old meet record by 10 seconds, they also shattered the school record of 9:47.4 that was set back in 1996 by Kim Goodson, Wossie Mazengia, Carrie Booth and Jamie Getz. Additionally the time checked in as the second fastest girls 3200m relay in Pennsylvania during the outdoor season and helped the girls secure an invite to the upcoming Penn Relays. “The plan in going to the invitational was to post a time under 9:25 to get a solid entry for the Penn Relays,” said head coach Derrick McDonald. “We realized on Saturday morning that doing so would also put the girls in the Pa #2 spot and break the previous school record of 23 years by 22 seconds.” Also grabbing a gold was Locker for her solo work in the 800m where her time of 2:16.53 was just a half-second off another meet record. Locker also secured one of two silver medals for Elizabethtown, taking second in the 1600m with a time of 5:12.78. Shontz nabbed the other silver, clocking an 11:17.05 in the 3200m with Quinn crossing just over five seconds later, snagging bronze in the process. Underkoffler finishing sixth in the 300H with a time of 49.72 while Derek Heisey captured fifth on the boy’s side with a time of 41.40. Heisey was able to secure seventh place in the 110H with Underkoffler taking the final podium spot on the girl’s side with a time of 17.27. Heisey made two more trips to the medal stand, placing eighth in the high jump with a 5-8. He also teamed up with Aiden Weaver, Aiden Hellein and Riley Drager to claim eighth in the 1600m relay. Hellein added a solo eighth place finish, turning in a 52.62 in the 400m while Frank Miele picked up the final medal for the boys with a toss of 46-1.75 in the shotput that landed him in sixth place. In the field, Megan Rider and Carly Sedun both finished eighth in their events with Rider clearing 4-10 in the high jump while Sedun recorded a 97-2 in the discus. Anson snagged a

seventh-place medal in the javelin with a 103-9. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The girls’ lacrosse team enjoyed a small winning streak with a 21-10 win over Cedar Crest on April 12th. The two-game run helped move the Lady Bears up the L-L standings but their movement was short lived as losses to Central Dauphin and Cocalico followed to put E-town at 4-7 overall and 2-5 in league play. Cyrose Conteh accounted for 11 of the 21 goals against Cedar Crest, finishing what head coach Cheyenne Benson called “a huge confidence booster for my group” with 100 career goals. Kate Weissend added five scores while Marena Lonardi added an assist to her hat trick. Jaide Epler and Brooke

Horst finished the scoring with one goal each. Corrie Baker earned the win with nine saves. Central Dauphin handed the Lady Bears a 15-11 loss on the 15th. Baker finished with five saves, the same number of goals that Weissend picked up in the loss. Conteh added four goals while Epler and Morgan Miller tacked on one apiece. Elizabethtown hosted Cocalico on April 16th and the Lady Eagles left town with a 14-3 victory. Conteh scored all three Lady Bear goals while Baker finished with seven saves. See E-town pg 8

Chargers Split Results, Move to 7-3 Overall by Leah Sintic
It was another mixed bag of results for Mount Calvary last week, picking up a conference win before dropping a non-conference clash 24 hours later. Tuesday’s home field win over Conestoga Christian held big CCAC ramifications for the Chargers, and they rose to the occasion securing a 7-1 win over the Cougars. Aidan Masters earned the victory from the mound, and he certainly Photo by Cheri Sine Charger shortstop Hunter Stewart reaches to late to make the put in the work to do so-striking out tag at second base during last Tuesday’s Mt. “Aidan did an excellent job getting ahead of hitters. He was consistently putting pressure on their hitters to put the ball in play,” pointed out head coach Jim Sintic. “His efficiency allowed him to pitch the entire seven innings.” While Masters was busy throwing strikes, his teammates were a united force behind him, making quick work of their time in the field. “Defensively we played phenomenally,” praised Sintic. “Conestoga put the ball in play and we just made plays, backing up our pitcherjust like we talk about all season.” Second baseman Damian Rutt came through with two big defensive plays in the field, putting a halt
to the Cougars’ attempts at getting into an offensive rhythm. Good hitting is contagious, and MC’s Hunter Stewart’s bat, with two hits and three runs batted in, sparked some of that momentum. Wyatt Lamb and A. Masters each supplied a pair of hits, and Chip Stambaugh’s two quality at bats included a RBI. Lamb’s awareness while base running allowed him to swipe two bases, and score the initial tally on the scoreboard on a wild throw and error by the Cougars. “We had offensive contributions up and down our order,” summarized Sintic. “What really separated our performance in this game was
attention to details and making good decisions.” The following evening, the Chargers headed to Millersburg, and after holding the initial three run lead, fell behind the Indians in the 6-4 loss. The Chargers had a strong night at the plate, outhitting Millersburg 9-7, but after holding the Indians scoreless over four innings, the momentum shifted in the bottom of the fifth when a Millersburg double drove in their first two runs. The Indians backed up their performance with a four-run sixth to overtake the Chargers. Dakota Lamb led the MC hit See Chargers pg 8

E-town from pg 6 TENNIS The boy’s tennis team added two more wins to their season tally knocking off Lebanon and Donegal to improve to 11-1. Their 5-1 Section Two mark puts them in a first-place tie with Cocalico, the team that handed the Bears their lone loss. The Bears took care of Lebanon on April 12th, shutting the Cedars out 7-0. Ethan Lown, Nacho Bartolome and Trent McBride all posted 6-0, 6-0 wins while Evan Schneider finished up the singles sweep with an 8-1 win. Chris and Jon Gartley enjoyed the same success in their number one doubles win, taking out Cameron Maya and Cody Zang by an 8-0 final. The Brecken Musser/Tyler Bixler team as well as the duo of Scott Bucher and Jimmy Overmoyer had a bit more trouble securing their wins but Musser/Bixler came away with an 8-5 win while Bucher/Overmoyer claimed an 8-6 victory. April 16th sent the Bears to Mt. Joy where they posted a 5-0 win over Donegal. Lown and McBride posted the only straight set wins with Lown claiming the number one singles with a 6-4, 6-2 final. McBride got by Nathan McNece with matching 6-2 finals. In between, Bartolome needed a tiebreaker to get by Evan Stehman, 7-5, 7-6(9-7) to finish singles action. Jon and Chris Gartley also needed a tiebreak to get rid of Luke Yuninger and Noah Hoffmaster, pulling out the 6-2, 7-6(7-2) win. Schneider and Overmoyer needed three sets and a
tiebreak to claim the final win. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team finds themselves in the middle of a rough patch with a losing streak that has reached six games with to losses to Cedar Crest, Central Dauphin and Manheim Township. Nineteen Duncan Keller saves were not enough to help the Bears leave Lebanon with a win as E-town fell to the Falcons 105. Sam Azzalina had two of those five goals while Chad Heisey, Alex Hartman and Cam Poulos accounted for one each. April 15th brought Central Dauphin to town and the Rams left with a 6-3 victory. Keller kept things close with 22 saves but goals by Azzalina, Matt Pottgeiser and Jacob Wivell were not enough to overcome the Rams. Elizabethtown took a trip to Neffsville on the 16th where the defending PIAA-3A champions handed E-town a 16-3 loss. Sawyer Smith tallied two of the three goals with Azzalina tacking on the final score. Keller turned away 23 shots in the loss. SOFTBALL The Lady Bear softball team did their best to keep pace with first place Lampeter-Strasburg posting wins over Hempfield and Cedar Crest and doubling their win streak, hitting four straight, to improve to 8-3 overall and 7-2 in L-L action. E-town used a three-run burst in the fifth to slip by Hempfield 4-1 on April 12th. Kristin Geesey tossed seven strong innings, allowing just the single Lady Black Knight run on four hits and no walks, adding four strikeouts to her day. She also helped
her cause with run producing singles in both the fourth and fifth innings. Hayden Calaman and Alyssa Hamilton added RBI singles in the fifth to push across the final two runs. Elizabethtown kicked off the new week with a 16-3 win over Cedar Crest on the 15th. Geesey was hit for all three Lady Falcon runs in the third but the Lady Bears had already built a 5-0 lead by that point. Geesey issued no walks over seven innings in the circle but did ring up 10 strikeouts. BASEBALL The baseball team had the same Hempfield/Cedar Crest double but the Bears took the loss in both games to slip to 3-7 on the year. Cole Patrick absorbed the brunt of the 12-4 loss to Hempfield on the 12th, surrendering seven runs on four hits and two walks. A slew of Etown errors meant only three runs were earned but Patrick still took the loss for his one and two-third innings. Zach Malone picked up the next three and one-third innings and saw three more Hempfield runs cross on his watch. The junior picked up two strikeouts and two walks during that time. Josh Kreider finished by covering the final inning and two Black Knight runs. Kyle Welch enjoyed a one hit, two RBI day at the plate while Matt Ramsey posted a two-hit game with a third inning single putting E-town on the board. Nick Kreider picked up the final RBI when he reached base on a fourth inning Hempfield error. A visit from Cedar Crest on April
15th played out in similar fashion with the Bears falling 10-2. This time it was Nick Kreider on the hook for the loss with Malone and Jake Black finishing things up. The Falcons forced Kreider from the game after just three innings and six runs with Malone (four earned runs) unable to slow the Crest attack. Blank covered the final three innings and kept Cedar Crest stuck on 10 runs. The trio combined for nine strikeouts and six walks. The Bears picked up both runs on Falcon miscues, a wild pitch in the second and an error in the third. Chargers from pg 7 count with three, and A. Masters, W. Lamb, Stewart, and Evan Barnes each drove in a run. “As a team, I felt like we never quit, we just couldn’t break through, noted Sintic. Stewart lasted five innings on the hill, striking out three, walking five, and allowing three earned runs and five hits. “Hunter pitched well and our defense was strong, Sintic pointed out. “Ultimately, Millersburg got key hits when they needed them. Photo by Cheri Sine The split week brings the Chargers Charger second baseman Damian Rutt makes the play on a Con- overall record to 7-3, with their estoga Christian ground ball during Mt. MHS, formed in 1985, sponsored Mayfest celebrations from 1985 through 2011 and then reinstated Mayfest last year with plans to continue it as an annual event. The society also has a goal to construct a building in which to display the town’s artifacts and historical documents. Mayfest publicity chairperson Autumn Kingsboro said that the MHS welcomes new, active members. “We want to keep the spirit and support of our little town, to keep that closeness,” she stated. Mayfest will take place rain or shine. For more details, readers may visit www.may townhistory.org or call Linda Good at 717-725-2437.

Also featured at the museum will be a history of the bank and of the life of police chief Marvin Foltz. “Made in Maytown” is the theme of the event this year, according to MHS chairperson Linda Good, who leads a 21-member Mayfest Committee. The Community Room at Three Center Square, known to longtime locals as Shenk’s Store, will host an exhibit with that title. “Everything we are selling or promoting at Mayfest has a historical component. Our goal is to restore the history of our town,” she explained, “and to rekindle the community spirit.” To that end, vendors, historic exhibits, and demonstrations will be evident throughout the square and its sidewalks on High and River streets. New this year will be a display of Maytown High School yearbooks in the newly restored Peter Brown’s Garage. Historic cars will be on exhibit on North River Street, as well. Also new this year will be Cupcake Corner, located at Shenk’s Store, with tasty donations made by local churches, organizations, and individuals. Food trucks will be in the area, too, selling ice cream, soft pretzels, french fries, and more. Earth Day from pg 1 lawn chair or blanket if they prefer to sit during the show. At 3 p.m., the Lancaster County Conservation District will conduct a stream study with the purpose of investigating what aquatic insects are present in order to determine the health of the stream. An electrofishing demonstration will take place immediately afterward. An electrical current will be run through the water, temporarily stunning the fish. The fish will then be collected in nets, temporarily placed in a fish tank, and identified to assess water quality. All fish are affected by electricity, so this method potentially produces fish that often elude anglers. Food will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the TCCCA. Food may be purchased using cash only. Giveaway drawing tickets will be sold as a fundraiser. Attendees may go home with free wildflower seeds or a native tree seedling. Before the festivities begin, a tree planting will take place at the same location, starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers will receive a free meal from the food stand. Admission to the Conewago Creek Earth Day Celebration is free. The event is sponsored by the TCCCA, part of the Conewago Creek Initiative. Other members of the Initiative, including Penn State Extension, are partnering with TCCCA to offer the day’s activities. GEARS Sets Programs
Bible2School from pg 1 In 1979, Section 1546 of the Pennsylvania School Code was amended to allow children to be released from public school for religious training of their choice. The Manheim Ministerium responded by organizing Weekday Religious Education (WRE). “At that time, in the late 1970s, divorce rates were rising, and children were missing church because of dual home situations,” noted Smith. “(The founders of WRE) wanted to be a support piece for those children.” Smith noted that 40 years later, according to some statistics, less than 25 percent of children attend church. “The need to have a program like this hasn’t gone away,” said Smith. “It has increased.” WRE, now called Bible2School, provides a program that comes alongside the churches to reach the children, but the program is no longer restricted to Manheim. About a decade ago, Bible2School expanded into the School District of Lancaster (SDL), where the program was embraced and now serves grades two, three, and four in seven of 13 elementary schools. Kori Pennypacker became executive director around that time. At the banquet, Smith spoke with a second-grade teacher from SDL who talked about how the students need a program like Bible2School and noted that he sees a dif-
Your
ference in the behavior of the students who attend the program. Growing beyond the Manheim Central School District was a cause for celebration at the event. “We celebrated the direction of growth (of) this membership model that allows Bible2School to be picked up anywhere,” said Smith, who said the program grew out of requests from parents. “Parents were saying, ‘I see the need for this. How do I get this into my community?’ That was a catalyst for us.” While the Manheim office oversees Bible2School in the Manheim Central School District and SDL, a number of other school districts within and outside the county are utilizing the program through a special membership affiliation. “Membership gives a nonprofit or church an opportunity to subscribe,” explained Smith, who noted that the membership fee affords the organization access to an online toolbox, which includes curriculum, curriculum support, videos, training, and a connection to the central office staff. “We also set them up with their own Bible2School website … which allows them to do online student registration,” noted Smith. Bible2School has members in a number of county school districts, including Conestoga Valley, Manheim Township, Hempfield, and Elizabethtown, which, along with
Students greeted guests at the 40th anniversary celebration of Bible2School, a released time effort first founded in Manheim, which through its membership affiliation program has spread to several county locations and even out of state.
Gathered at the Bible2School 40th anniversary celebration on March 28 were board members (from left) Gerald Hoover, Doug Hall, founding board member Hazel Nestleroth, Nicole Lehman, William Wells, and Donna Nicholson-Stief. Founded in Manheim, the organization has expanded into several county school districts.
SDL and Manheim Central, reach a total of more than 700 students within the county. The organization also has affiliates in western Pennsylvania and now in Delaware. Lisa Landis served as master of ceremonies for the anniversary celebration, and guest speaker Dan Kreider, a Manheim Central alumnus and member of a Pittsburgh Steelers NFL championship team, spoke
about the importance of his Christian roots as he moved into playing college and professional sports. The program concluded with the testimony of Dre Woods, a Schaeffer Elementary student who attended Bible2School. When Dre was baptized a year ago, he remarked that it was at Bible2School that he came to faith in Christ, Smith explained. Dre’s
father, Josh, who volunteered with Bible2School, shared the importance of being involved in a program where children from all backgrounds are coming to hear the Gospel message. Readers who would like to learn more about Bible2School may visit www.bible2school.com or call 717-615-2944.

years, Sherry learned budgeting skills, was promoted in her full-time work and found permanent housing for her family. Sherry is just one example of the many women that Bridge of Hope @ GSS has helped become independent and successful. Bridge of Hope @ GSS aims to reduce homelessness among all women and children in the local community. From 2017 to 2018, its Permanent Housing Services program served 208 women and children, provided $87,792 in rental assistance to single mothers across Lancaster and Chester counties and helped 12 families graduate from the program, according to www.good samservices.org. The organization’s services include case management and goal planning, resource development, life skills and parenting support, mentoring/volunteer support and financial assistance for rent, utilities and transportation. In 2017, Good Samaritan Services took Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties under its wing via a merger between the nonprofits. Both had the same mission but offered different services, so combining allowed them to be even more effective in accomplishing their goals. “As a result of the merger, families in our Bridge of Hope @ GSS program can now participate in our Matched Savings and Microloan programs,” explained Nate Hoffer, the CEO of Good Samaritan Services. “The Matched Savings program awards $600 and the Microloan program awards loans up to $2,500 to clients, which, when paid back, rebuilds their credit.” In October 2018, the Bridge of Hope @ GSS program was given several awards from Bridge of Hope National for being the highest-performing program site in the network across both the U.S. and Canada. “We received awards for serving the most families and successfully helping families move into permanent housing,” said Hoffer. Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) will again partner with Bridge of Hope @ GSS for the 12th annual Golf Outing, which completely benefits the nonprofit. “We have been supporting Bridge of Hope @ GSS for the past decade, impressed by the continued progress they continue to make in the lives of our neighbors,” said EPC publisher Jocelyn Engle, who spearheads the event. “We are passionate to benefit organizations that recognize the importance to

Students Honored For Doing Right Thing Two Elizabethtown Area School District students were recently recognized as Do the Right Thing recipients. Lilly Fulton, a third-grade student at Bainbridge Elementary School, was recognized for reporting bullying and being an “upstander” against bullying. Kaydence Kershner, a fourthgrade student at Bear Creek Intermediate School, was recognized for being aware and meeting the needs of a classmate. The students’ good deeds were acknowledged at ceremonies held recently at their respective schools, where they received a certificate of recognition, a Do the Right Thing Tshirt, and a gift certificate. Do the Right Thing is a national program
and a collaborative effort between Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), the Elizabethtown local police departments, and the Elizabethtown Area School District. The program seeks to recognize students in the community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude or outstanding efforts. It emphasizes random acts of kindness that otherwise may go unnoticed.
