Runners take part in a previous Elizabethtown Rotary Mother’s Day 5K.

Celebrate Mother’s Day With A 5K “This is a fun way to do something healthy and celebrate moms,” said Rotarian Dan Brill, describing the Elizabethtown Rotary Mother’s Day 5K. The event will be held on Sunday, May 8, at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. Race-day registration and packet pickup will begin at 1:30 p.m., and the race will start at 3 p.m. “It’s a run/walk event, and we do encourage walkers,” Brill said. “It’s open for anyone, any age. It’s not a super competitive type of atmosphere. It’s just a family day, a celebration. It’s a fun way to get together and honor moms.” The race will be returning after taking a two-year break because of the pandemic. “This will be our

seventh year for the race,” Brill stated. Prizes will be awarded to the top overall male and female finishers as well as the top three finishers in various age categories. This year, the Rotary Club has partnered with Hope Within Ministries in Elizabethtown to raise funds for the organization. “They are a family health center that provides services for uninsured and low-income people,” Brill explained. “Our original goal when we started this 5K wasn’t to make it a fundraiser, but just to have it be a celebration of moms. This partnership is a nice way to support a local organization.” Along with the race, the event will include music, balloons and snacks. “We’ll have flowers for all mothers in attendance, whether

they are participating in the race or they are spectators,” Brill said. “It’s a fun atmosphere.” He noted that the race time was intentionally set to allow families to celebrate Mother’s Day before or after the 5K. “You can go out to brunch beforehand or go out for dinner afterward,” he remarked, adding that the event will wrap up by about 4:30 p.m. “This race is just a small portion of the day and a way to add another option to celebrate and honor mothers.” For more information on the Elizabethtown Rotary Mother’s Day 5K, visit www.elizabethtownrotary.org and click on “Fundraising Events.” Although race-day registration will be available, preregistration is encouraged. T-shirts will be available for preregistered participants.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Although the event has a long history, this is the first time it’s being held since 2018, Kingsboro said, adding, “We are really excited to bring it back.” This year’s theme for Mayfest is “Celebrate Maytown!” and everything about the event highlights that idea. Festivities will include a selfguided tour of Maytown, food, demonstrations, vendors and more. “New this year, we’re partnering with a car dealership in town, Siegrist Automotive, for a car show,” Kingsboro stated. “We’re also adding a scavenger hunt for children, and we’re hoping that can be a family event, where people can walk around the town and read signs depicting the history of Maytown.” Scavenger hunt participants will receive a wooden nickel to spend at the kids’ craft area in the square or at the Penny Candy Shoppe set up for the day. Tours will be offered of historic properties in Maytown, including the Old Maytown Bank, 13 W. High St., which is now The Bank House Airbnb, and the Frank-Brown Garage, in the rear of 100 S. River St. A variety of craft vendors will be set up throughout the event, and several historical demonstrations will be featured. “Our country needs prayers,” said Nancy Shonk, summing up the mission of the Mount Joy National Day of Prayer. “We want to honor the people in our community, to pray for them.” The community is invited to a prayer breakfast on Thursday, May 5, at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. Doors will open at 6:15 a.m. and breakfast will be served until 7 a.m., followed by a program and prayers from 7 to 8 a.m. “We do it early in the morning so people can get to work afterwards,” said Shonk, who is on the organizing team for the event. The Mount Joy National Day of Prayer is open to anyone of any faith, and it offers an opportunity to pray for the community, Shonk said, adding that this year’s theme follows the national theme “Exalt the Lord who has established us,” based on Colossians 2:6-7. Chaplain Stephen Weber will open the program, followed by remarks by Tim Bradley, the mayor of Mount Joy. SweetLife Music, featuring Matt and Carol Frigm, will provide worship music, and a variety of people will offer prayers based on the topics suggested by the national headquarters of the event. “We invited people and organizations who have a history in Mount Joy,” Shonk said. “We wanted to keep it as local as possible.” State Sen. Ryan Aument will pray for the government. Veteran Tracy Miller, who is the manager of Fulton Bank in Elizabethtown, will offer prayer for the military. Mount Joy Chief of Police Robert Goshen will pray for the

police, first responders and firefighters. Chaplain Bunny O’Hare will pray for the business community, including commercial, agriculture and trucking. Donegal High School history teacher Justin Neideigh will offer prayer for educators, followed by Tom Weber, pastor of Florin Church of the Brethren, who will say a prayer for the church. Andrea Riefenstahl, executive director of Friends of Donegal, will pray for families and will offer a short talk on the Friends of Donegal organization. Cristina Paden, executive director of Rainbow’s End Youth Services, will provide a message and prayer as well. Shonk noted that the event would not be possible without the support of sponsors, including Bud Handwerk/Annamar Associates, Buch Funeral Home, Florin Church of the Brethren, J.B. Hostetter & Sons, Kleen-Rite Corp., Greg Sallade/State Farm Insurance, Sheetz Funeral Home and Stauffers of Kissel Hill. “Sometimes I think the importance of community is overlooked, and this is a way to not only honor the community, but also to let other people know what’s going on in their community,” Shonk said. Tickets for the Mount Joy National Day of Prayer must be purchased by Sunday, May 1, and are on sale at J.B. Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy; Jim Roberts West Main Auto, 14 W. Main St., Mount Joy; and the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce office, 62 E. Main St. Tickets may also be purchased by calling Shonk at 717-989-6452. The unit offers two private showers to accommodate families and children, along with clean towels and toiletry kits. Women’s hygiene kits, made up by the Lancaster Pilot Club, include encouraging cards, nail files, wipes, mouthwash, lip balm, shampoo, and conditioner. Items for men include razors and shave gel. “We have socks, underwear, bras, undershirts, and we have some things for children too,” stated Morales, who added that a partnership with GROVE, a cleaning supply company, helps stock the kits and provides cleaning supplies for families. The unit also offers pregnancy tests and resources. But Refresh is more than just a place to freshen up. Lancaster EMS offers a community care medicine program, which visits homes of those referred by Lancaster General Health or who qualify under insurance. “The goal is to help prevent unnecessary hospital stays,” said Morales, who noted limiting emergency room visits is another aim of the program. “I am fully capable and stocked to

monitor vitals and in the near future, we will be doing diabetic screenings through (Lancaster General Health),” said Morales, who also has phlebotomy training, but noted she would need to be informed ahead of the need for a blood draw. “If someone is in a diabetic emergency, I have glucose to try to help reverse that,” she added. “We have ways to help with medical aspects.” While the trailer can carry 40 gallons of water, Morales noted it is better to hook up to a water source at the location than to haul water, so weather is sometimes an issue. “If it’s below freezing, we will not deploy because our water lines will freeze,” she explained, adding that another issue is high winds that make it difficult to haul the trailer safely. “If we don’t bring the trailer, I will still go out in the truck or the ambulance or another vehicle to at least provide medical attention,” said Morales. Readers who would like to know more about the program may call 717-690-6538 or email alexandra_morales@lemsa.com.

LANCASTER LANDFILL Lancaster Landfill, LLC is providing notice that a Major Permit Modification Application will be filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Southcentral Regional Office in April 2022. This Application is being submitted to permit the acceptance of select residual waste in the landfill that can be used as an alternate operational cover which requires revision of the Waste Analysis and Classification Plan. Additionally, minor changes are being made to update the Contingency Plan. The Landfill is located in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Copies of the application have previously been forwarded to the appropriate municipality, county and adjacent property owners. This public notification is being provided in accordance with Chapter 271.141(a) of the Pennsylvania Municipal Waste Regulations. As stated above, this request includes the use of select residual waste materials as alternate operational cover, including recycled paper deinking sludge, foams, auto shred fluff material, non-petroleum contaminated soil, soils with different texture classifications, processed construction and demolition waste, and Posi-Shell (a cement-water-fiber product). These waste streams have been previously approved by the PADEP as alternate operational cover materials under the design alternative procedures in §271.231. Lancaster Landfill has been designed and constructed with a dual-liner system meeting the Subtitle D criteria for a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill, and as such was permitted to accept Module-1 residual waste for disposal in the original permit dating back to 1992. To be clear, Lancaster Landfill intends to remain a construction and demolition (C&D) facility. We are simply seeking the ability to use pre-approved residual waste streams as cover to help support the landfill operations and minimize the use of clean soils that consume landfill airspace. In accordance with §271.141(a)(2) the host municipality and county may submit comments to the PADEP within 60 days of receipt of the Application, recommending conditions upon, revisions to and approval or disapproval of the permit, with the specific reasons described in the comments. A copy of the Application will be available for review by the public at the PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Requests to review the Application can be made by calling 717-705-4700. Fees for copying may be charged by the PADEP. The PADEP will accept and consider comments from the public during the permit review. Persons who wish to comment on this application should contact the PADEP at the following address: PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, Attention: John Oren, P.E., 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Company Offers Spring Cleaning Schedule The dumpster company Bin There Dump That has developed a four-week, day-by-day spring cleaning schedule that offers tips and tricks to help property owners welcome the new season by cleaning up and clearing out every room in their home or business. According to Mike Kernaghan, CEO of Bin There Dump That, the spring cleaning schedule walks property owners step-by-step through a one-month program of clearing out and cleaning up that will leave their properties fresh and free of clutter, inside and out. The spring cleaning calen-

dar breaks tasks down into four weeks, with daily tasks in each week. Week One - “The Purge: Big Picture Organization” is focused on eliminating clutter because it does not make sense to spend time deep-cleaning items that are no longer needed. Week Two - “The Cozy Places: Living Areas, Bedrooms and Closets” focuses on creating spaces that help people improve the way they sleep, work and relax. Week Three - “The Gritty Places: Kitchen, Bath, Garage, Basement and Attic” covers spaces that have the potential for harboring health-threat-

“God is using the work and ministry of Mt. Hope to be a light for our community,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim. “Some families even describe Mt. Hope as an ‘answer to a prayer.’” You can help support the retirement community’s mission by having dinner on Friday, May 13. Mt. Hope will offer a curbside pickup barbecue meal from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the LCBC Manheim campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road. The meal will include fire-grilled chicken from Peters’ Barbecue, saucy smoked baked beans with bacon, a baked potato with sour cream and butter, a dinner roll with butter, a fruit cup and a homemade dessert. Proceeds from the meal will benefit the residents and facility, which provides skilled long-term nursing and rehabilitation care for seniors and disabled residents, regardless of their ability to pay. “ With a heart to serve seniors and the disabled on low and/or fixed incomes, Mt. Hope is home to 50 residents who need nursing care in

Rapho Township, Manheim and beyond,” said Wilson. “Most of our residents at Mt. Hope do not have the financial resources or the broader supportive network to cover the cost of their care. There is an average gap of about $150 a day per resident between the state Medicaid reimbursement rate and the actual cost of care for our residents on state assistance.” Last year, Mt. Hope covered approximately $1.4 million of unreimbursed care costs or charitable care. As part of a capital campaign renovation project, Mt. Hope has fully upgraded its 29 resident rooms and has fully renovated the first-floor women’s and men’s public restrooms. Funds are still needed to upgrade the main parking lot of the facility as well as the resident common areas such as the resident first- and second-floor lounges, the dining hall and the conference room. “The Medicaid funding gap makes it increasingly difficult for Mt. Hope to absorb the cost of benevolent care without searching for other alternatives to offset rising costs and continuing with creative fundraising initiatives,” Wilson said. “The drive-through meal … provides a way to not

Etown Boys Top Lebanon for First Track Win

It may have taken the boy’s track and field team nearly half of the regular season but a 9357 win over Lebanon on April 19th gave the Bears their first win of 2022. Juan Lopez led the way with two solo and two relay wins. Lopez won the 100m and 400m while getting help from Owen Dommel, Zachary Verghese and Carlton Wise to win the 400m relay and from Dommel, Varghese and Taidou N’Dikwe to win the 1600m relay. Verghese (200m) and Wise (pole vault) also picked up wins while Nathanael Moynihan added wins in the discus and javelin. Caleb Fuge (110H), Branden Shaud (300H) and Zackery Lippold (shot put) also picked up wins. The Lady Bears enjoyed a 102-39 win over Lebanon with wins coming from all corners. E-town won all three relay races starting with the work of Jillian Wivell, Lilah Drager, Julia McAlonis and Olivia Shenk in the 3200m. Addy Haak, Lily Heistand, Genna McDonald and Drager closed out the meet with a win in the 1600m relay. In between it was Jadea Pinkerton, Haak, Heistand and McDonald winning the 400m. McDonald also won the 100m and 200m with Ally Evans doubling in the high jump and triple jump. Shenk added a win in the 300H while Ruth Wright claimed the 100H. Elizabethtown took all three distance races thanks to the work of Sierra Kapcsos (800m), Ali Fink (1600m) and Julia McAlonis (3200m) while Charlotte Hershey (shot put) and Annabelle Price (discus)

also claiming firsts. A few days prior, the Bears tangled with Solanco in another Section Two clash. The Lady Bears posted a super-slim 75.5-74.5 win while the boy’s fell by a 10050 final. Once again, the girls were able to claim all three relay races. Drager, Jordan DiRisio, Kapcsos and Fink earned the 3200m relay win while Heistand, Drager, Haak and McDonald claimed the 1600m relay. Haak, Heistand and McDonald picked up some help from Felicia Morris to win the 400m relay. Fink added wins in the 800m and 1600m while Haak was tops in the 200m. All the Lady Bear field points came from the high jump where Evans took first, McAlonis claimed second and Julia Sikora tied for third. The boy’s side posted six victories with two coming in relay races. Verghese, Dommel and Lopez took part in both, getting help from Tavan Schoenberger in the 400m relay and from N’Dikwe in the 1600m relay. Lopez added the top time in the 400m, Dommel took 200m. In the field, Wise topping the pole vault standings and Moynihan the discus field. BOYS’ LACROSSE As the boy’s lacrosse team rounds the final bend for the home stretch of the 2022 season the Bears are searching for their first victory. Losses to Garden Spot, Manheim Township and Red Land dropped the Bears to 0-11 with six games remaining. A 15-0 setback to Red Land on the 13th opened the threegame stretch while a 20-3 loss to Township on the 19th

ended it. In between was a 10-3 loss to Garden Spot on the 18th. Elijah Poulos scored all three goals against Manheim while Matthew Cruz, Carson NyeSmith and Bryce Kauffman split the scoring against Spot. Joe Zink added 23 saves to his season. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Sometimes a win is not just a win and a great example of that would be the girl’s lacrosse team and their 7-6 victory over Cedar Crest on April 14th. The win was not only the Lady Bears first of the season, but it was also the first since April 30th, 2019, a span of 28 games. Photo by Cheri Sine “The pieces finally Genna McDonald runs the 100 meter came together,” said dash for the Bears in their win over head coach Cheyenne visiting Lebanon on April 19. We’re excited to do whatever they feel they need us to do.” Ruhl and her husband have been mission team coordinators for 14 years, and the trip to Kentucky will be a sentimental one for the couple. “Going there was the first trip my husband and I organized,” Ruhl recalled. “This will be our sixth or seventh time going

there, but we haven’t been for several years, so it will be kind of like a homecoming for us and a chance to see old friends.” The mission trips are intergenerational and offer an opportunity for youths and adults to learn from each other while serving alongside one another, Ruhl said. This will be the group’s first trip in three years since the pandemic canceled trips in 2020 and 2021. “We’re so excited to go,” Ruhl commented. “We’re ready to get our hands dirty again.” Reservations are not required for the breakfast, but Ruhl recommends arriving early since items often sell out. “It’s a low-key, friendly atmosphere, where people can be together in fellowship,” she stated. “Come and check out our church if you’ve never been to our church before and learn more about what we do.” For more information on the breakfast, visit https:// ruhlschurch.org or call the church office at 717-665-3400.

The meal will be held in the fellowship hall of the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, from 6 to 10 a.m. or until sold out. Proceeds will benefit a mission trip in June. Along with strawberries and waffles, the breakfast will feature pancakes, eggs, breakfast casserole, bacon, sausage, home-fried potatoes and assorted beverages. “There’s lots of good food to eat,” said Gail Ruhl, mission team coordinator. “It’s a great time to come and visit with friends or family, sit around and talk and just enjoy a very relaxing atmosphere. We don’t rush people in and out. You can stay and converse, catch up with old friends or meet new ones.” During the meal, the church will show a video spotlighting

expanded season. The market will be held in the American Legion Post 185 lot, 560 Clay Alley, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month from May through October, beginning on May 5. Voyage Mount Joy was formed in early 2021 to market Mount Joy as a destination for shopping, dining and more. Business leaders, community members and residents have volunteered with the organization to not only promote the town, but also to create keystone events for Mount Joy, said Sheri Bare, president of Voyage Mount Joy. “We knew right away that one of our first major community collaborations was to bring a market back to Mount Joy,” she said. Katie Roering, director of marketing and social media for the organization, added, “The original market in Mount Joy was a beloved weekly outing for many residents. We believe in the importance of supporting our local small businesses and hope that our market can be an incubator for future businesses in town.” As Roering explained, the Market at Mount Joy is a hybrid event that’s a mix of farmers market, food truck event and maker’s market. Based on community feedback, this year’s market will feature

more food trucks and additional entertainment. “We will have Hank Imhof playing a combination of blues, jazz, gospel, folk, bluegrass and rock,” Roering noted. “Hank will be playing each Market from May through September. We encourage everyone to bring a lawn chair to sit, eat and listen.” Many of the vendors are returning from the previous year, with some additions. Food will be offered by Stoney’s Burgers & Fries, PaPa Sneaux, Dutch Country Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzels, Cupcakes by Casey, Made With Love Not Gluten Bakery and The Gathering Place. Regard’s Winery will offer tastings and sell wine by the bottle. Other vendors will include Girl Crush Company, Seed & Bloom Farm, Retherford Family

Produce, LancGoods and Matt Thompson Photography. “The market gives an opportunity to come out in Mount Joy and have dinner, do some shopping and support our local vendors, as well as relax and enjoy the music,” Roering remarked. “Mount Joy has such a fun community, and we love encouraging everyone to come together for a few hours.” For more information, including vendor previews, search for “The Market at Mount Joy” or “ Voyage Mount Joy” on Facebook or Instagram. As of April 20, a few vendor spots were still open, and sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information, visit www.voyagemountjoy.com.
