Girls’ Lacrosse Team Wraps Up The 2022 Season

E-town’s Danielle Bruno shoots and scores one of her match-high three goals in the Bears’ 9-8, L-L League loss to Ephrata, May 5 in E-town.

BY ERIC PYLES

For most high school sports teams, momentum can be fickle. A perfect example would be the girl’s lacrosse team, after snapping their 28-game losing streak on April 14th, the Lady Bears enjoyed a small 3-0-1 run only to fade over the final four games to fall to 3-14-1 overall and 2-8-1.

E-town closed their L-L slate on May 5th with a narrow 9-8 loss to Ephrata where 12 Sydney Pope saves were not enough to hold off the Lady Mountaineers. Dani Bruno paced the attack with three scores while Aiesha Rios added two. Moira Shott, Charley Lengel-Kramer, and Hailey Mertz rounded out the scoring.

One day later the Lady Bears closed their season with a 21-3 loss to South Western. Bruno netted all three goals while Pope turned away 16 shots.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

The end of the regular season was no better for the boy’s team with the Bears dropping their season finale to Hempfield by a 15-1 final. That puts E-town at 0-10 in L-L action and 1-15 overall.

VOLLEYBALL

The boys’ volleyball team took two more steps toward the end of their regular season with wins over Lebanon and Cocalico. Elizabethtown enjoyed a 3-0 sweep over the Cedars (25-8, 25-20, 25-21) on May 5th, which also doubled as senior night for the Bears. Dylan Shepherd posted a 16 assist, one block game while Damian Tobias recorded 10 kills. Billy O’Connell added five aces to the offense. Tristan Lane and Seth Rajnic matched Shepherd’s one block while Evan Ott chipped in with seven digs.

The Bears were back in action on the 9th with wins of 25-12, 25-23 and 27-25 for another sweep, this one over Cocalico. Shepherd fronted the attack with 23 assists and four aces while Bryan Murray tallied 17 kills. Eli Miller recorded 15 digs and Josh McCoy three blocks to lead the defense.

SOFTBALL

One loss does not constitute a tailspin but when it comes late in the season against a potential playoff foe, an uneasy feeling lingers. Such is life for the E-town softball team after a 5-1 loss to Solanco on May 10th. The Golden Mares not only sit above Elizabethtown in the LL pecking order, they are also a few spots higher in the District 3-5A power rankings, making the loss much more difficult to stand.

Brooke Bryan was in the circle for all seven innings and took the loss with two strikeouts and one walk to go with 15 Solanco hits. Nizaly OrtizKreiner broke-up the Golden Mare shutout with a fielder’s

townlively.com Sports frompg 8 choice in the seventh that pushed Sophia Finch across to make it a 5-1 final.

The going was much better on the 4th as E-town rolled Lebanon, 15-0, in three innings. Bryan allowed no hits and no walks, adding four strikeouts for good measure. Ortiz-Kreiner enjoyed a threehit, three-RBI game but it was Finch leading the way at the plate. The junior first baseman finished with four RBI on two hits.

TRACK

The final regular season tune-up for the track and field team did not go as planned with the Lady Bears falling to Garden Spot 89-61 while the boy’s dropped a heartbreaking 75-74 final.

The boys did their heavy lifting on the track with only Carlton Wise’s pole vault win coming in the field. Half of that heavy lifting came from relay wins with Elizabethtown taking all three. Jaycen Conrad, Patrick Boyer, Max Gerhart and Nicolas Mascia opened the meet with a 3200m relay win while Juan Lopez, Owen Dommel, Taidou N’Dikwe and Zach Verghese closed the meet with a 1600m relay win. In between it was Dommel, Lopez, Verghese and Ryan Ruth taking the 400m relay. Two of the final three wins went to N’Dikwe (400m) and Verghese (200m). Conrad finished things off with a 3200m win.

The Lady Bears claimed two of the three relay races starting with the 4x800. Jillian Wivell, Kendall Hein, Liah Drager and Olivia Shenk enjoyed that victory while Felicia Morris, Addy Haak, Lily Heistand and Genna McDonald claimed the 400m relay. McDonald (200m) and Wivell (3200m) added solo wins to their day with Ali Fink (800m) Jordan DiRisio (1600m) rounding out the track wins.

Elizabethtown’s final two wins came in the field with Charlotte Hershey taking the shot put and Ally Rank the pole vault.

BASEBALL

In a case of too little too late the baseball team posted wins over Penn Manor, Solanco and Garden Spot on backto-back-to-back days with the result being an 8-11 mark but no playoff berth to show for their effort.

The Bears topped Penn Manor 6-0 on May 9th with Alex Baker enjoying the win. The senior scattered six hits with three strikeouts and one walk while holding the Comets scoreless over his seven innings. Mitchell Garber made the most of his one hit, driving in two with his sixth inning double. Baker, Jonathan Hinkle, Cade Capello and Cole Chrzanowski completed the offense with one RBI apiece.

One day later the Bears slipped by Solanco, 10-6, thanks to a four-run rally in the top of the seventh. Chrzanowski and Braden Cummings were responsible for that rally, each driving in two runs. Garber also enjoyed a two-RBI game, belting solo homeruns in the first and fifth innings. Kaden Kimble picked up the win despite allowing the first five Solanco runs during his six innings of work. Ben Heckman secured the win by finishing the final inning allowing one run on one hit with no walks and no strikeouts.

Playing a third game in three days did not faze Elizabethtown as the Bears topped Garden Spot 4-0 in their season finale on the 11th. Pike Burkett picked up the win, tossing six shutout innings with Kaleb Daley striking out the side in the seventh to close the game out. The pair allowed just four hits and combined for nine strikeouts. Luis Perez-Alfaro put E-town on the board with a two-run single in the third while Baker added another two-run single in the fifth.

It was not all good times for the Bears as a 7-6 loss to Lebanon on the 5th would attest. The Cedars used a three-run seventh inning rally to wipe away Elizabethtown’s two-run top half that had made it 6-4 in favor of the visitors. Garber accounted for those two seventh inning runs with a home run while Perez-Alfaro used a sac fly and a bases loaded walk to collect his two-RBIs. Kimble got the start but ended with a no-decision after leaving in the sixth. Burkett tossed the seventh and took the loss.

Best Practices For ID Protection

To help online banking users protect against spoofing, Northwest Bank has compiled a list of best practices for protection and remediation. Spoofing is the act of disguising a communication, such as a call or text, from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source like a financial institution.

If individuals did not initiate contact with their bank and are contacted by someone claiming to be from their bank, they should ignore the text or email or disconnect the call. Then, they should call their bank immediately using a phone number from a known source, like online banking or a bank statement.

People should never send personal information over instant messaging, text, or email. Requests for personal information over the phone are almost always a scam.

Banks will never contact individuals and ask them to provide a code sent by text message or email to access their account. Text verification codes should only be initiated by the customer and entered by them through channels like online banking.

Individuals should routinely check online banking to be sure there have not been any unauthorized logins. If someone identifies unauthorized logins, they should update their user ID and password immediately and review their transaction activity, reporting anything suspicious to their financial institution.

The same user ID and password should not be used to access different websites. An email address should not be used as one’s online banking user ID, and individuals should routinely change their online banking user ID and password.

Additionally, for those who become a victim of identity theft, Northwest recommends several steps. Victims should call their financial institution immediately. An identity theft complaint should be filed with the Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.ftc.gov or 877-438-4338.

Victims should also contact the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on their credit report. To place a fraud alert, call Equifax at 800-5256285, Experian at 888-3973742, and TransUnion at 800680-7289.

It is also important for people to file a police report to protect themselves if an ID thief starts using their information to commit crimes.
