Honoring Second Acts Turn Around Recognition Breakfast Held By Diane Bitting
One by one, 13 teenagers stood and told their heart-wrenching stories. One girl described how her drugaddicted parents were always fighting and told her she was an “inconvenience.” Money went to drugs instead of food and clothing for her and her sister. Another young woman said her father once locked her in her room for a week; she didn’t get to eat or have access to the bathroom. Later, diagnosed with depression and anxiety and in and out of mental hospitals, she tried to kill herself. One young man told of how he hung out with the wrong crowd,
partying and drinking. W hen he tried to join the Army, criminal charges caught up with him. These were just three in a medley of tales shared by students who had overcome challenges and moved on to successful second acts. They were honored recently at a Turn Around Recognition breakfast held by Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), a nonprofit organization that works to improve the lives of children, youths and families in the Elizabethtown area. Fifty-six students in middle school and high school were nominated, and 35 attended the May 21 breakfast, which took place at Elizabethtown College. The event, held since 2000, recognizes youths who have made significant improvements in their attitudes, grades and behaviors; recommending them

EACTC executive director, told those assembled. “But somehow, you have drawn the positive attention of your teachers, your counselors, your administrators.” See Recognition Breakfast pg 5

Gail Viscome (right), executive director of Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), stands with a student who told her story at EACTC’s Turn Around Recognition breakfast. The school district’s superintendent, Michele Balliet, also addressed the attendees. “Some of the things that all of you have overcome are things that most adults in their entire lifetime don’t have to deal with,” she said. Balliet said she was proud of these students who “have resilience, passion (and) persistence (in) seeking out great role models, great support systems.” Viscome added, “We as a community want to tell you that we care, and we really want to celebrate your lives and what you’ve done.” The guest speaker, Leo Silva, associate director of the Attollo college access/leadership program, spoke to the students about the difficulties he experienced after leaving the Dominican Republic as a youngster and relocating to Lancaster. The nominated students who shared

their stories talked about how they withstood personal trials to see success in and out of school, while realizing that people do care. The one girl, who is now living with her grandparents, reported that in addition to attending school, she is also working and has a learner’s permit for driving. She’s also been clean from drugs for nearly a year. “No matter what anyone says about you, you are not an inconvenience,” she told her fellow students. “You are worth it. You are worth being alive.” The other young woman got caught up in her schoolwork and managed to graduate; she also volunteered with students with multiple disabilities. She said that she plans to become a certified nursing assistant and work with dementia patients. Following her suicide attempt, she realized she had to change her life. “I realized I had struggles in the past and I had people who had hurt me, but the person who is always going to be there with you and always to be the one supporting you is going to be yourself, and you have to be strong to just keep pushing on,” she said. The young man also graduated, as an Elizabethtown student from Lancaster County Academy, and he is looking toward Army basic training. “You need to work hard no matter what,” he said. “Life isn’t always down; life is down for short periods of time. Only you can control how you rise up.” EACTC board member Jonathan Woodall, lead minister at GracePointe Church of Christ, Elizabethtown, asked the students to raise their hands if they could identify with the stories shared. Their hands went up. “That’s the power of story,” he said. “The power of story is, you’re not alone in what you’ve been through, ever.” The following middle school students were nominated for Turn Around Recognition: Timothy Aungst, Shawn Bachart, Christian Barnes, Shayana Buisson, Caleb Burgos-Torres, Aaron Bush, Karizma Castillo, Logan Cicero, Brianna Claar, Hunter Ferris, Paige Geiman, Alyson Gotshall, Zoey Gutierrez, Madison Harry, Shelby Hodges, Scarlette Ineich, Nicki Lathrop, Daisy Neefe, Sydney Pawling, Daquan Quickel, Landon Roark-Weymer, Gracin Smith, Isabella Stahl, Calla Stoltzfus, Michaela Taylor, Matthew Zink and Gabriella Zook. The following high school students were nominated: Ivan Albert, Rylee Bowser, Olivia Buller, Riley Bryan, Rebekah Burkett, Gabriel Cooper, Jonathan Dickerson, Katie Dugan, Tony Eckinger, Ian Franks, Julia Garris, McGwire Halter, Gerald Huber, Elvin Irizarry, Hunter King, Zackery Kolsovsky, Megan McKee, Amador Montano, Reese Montgomery, Kyle Nutter, Nicholas Port, Taylor Reigle, Stephany Rogers, Bryann Stefani, Wyatt Templin, Vivian Ulsh, Camir Velez Vargas, Britni Wagner and Jaiden Young. Hero Walk from pg 1 utility payments. Androsky emphasized that the PA Hero Walk is run by volunteers, so the money does not go toward any staff expenses - only to helping veterans. Organizers have set a goal of raising $20,000 for the PA Hero Walk this year. Androsky said that after raising $2,000 at the first Columbia Hero Walk, organizers upped their goal to raising $5,000 at the second walk and just missed it by raising $4,600. Similarly in year three, the event raised $9,600 - just barely missing the $10,000 goal. However, Androsky said that the winds shifted last year as organizers set a goal to raise $15,000, and the event raised more than $16,000. Businesses and individuals who would like to support the

School is out for Elizabethtown Area School District, but six members of Elizabethtown Area High School’s Mind and Body class recently had one last task to complete before beginning their summer. On June 4, the students, along with teacher Shane Kargo, gathered at the Community Place on Washington to donate more than $4,319 to Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC). Earlier this spring, the class hosted a community-wide 5K run on the high school campus. The proceeds from the race were earmarked for EACTC. As part of the run, the students planned the event, publicized it to the community, laid out the course, and organized race-day activities. EACTC will use the funds to support the following programs that directly impact the school district. The Positive Community Norms initiative addresses community issues by focusing on positive, healthy norms and behaviors and seeking to reduce misperceptions related to the use of alcohol and drugs by today’s youths. The Club Ophelia Program is offered to fifth-grade girls and middle school girls in the Elizabethtown Area School District to help them develop healthy relationship skills and learn successful ways of handling relational aggression. The Do The Right Thing Program honors children and youths in kindergarten through grade 12 in the Elizabethtown community who do positive things that make a difference. The Suite 360 Student and Parent Wellness Platform helps students in seventh through 12th grades and their parents navigate a range of issues related to online bullying, character development, social competence, tactical parent support, emotional wellness, restorative justice, and other areas. The Positive Experience Partnership is offered to students at Bear Creek School and led by experienced college students and Elizabethtown Area School District counseling staff. The program offers activities designed to

The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, located in the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, invites area seniors to its upcoming programs. The center, a service of GEARS and the Lancaster County Office of Aging, is open regularly on Mondays through Fridays. Interested individuals may call the center at 717-367-7984 for more information or to make reservations. On Thursday, June 13, activities will include walking at 9 a.m., craft class at 10 a.m., Mind Matters: Memory As We Age at 10:45 a.m., and pinochole at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be Santa Fe salad with mixed greens, chicken, roasted vegetables and cheese, a dinner roll, tortilla soup, and pineapple tidbits. U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker, in conjunction with the office of U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, will lead a ceremony honoring area Vietnam-era veterans with a 50thanniversary commemorative pin. Veterans from the 11th Congressional District are invited to attend and be honored at this event. This ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 15, at 8 a.m. in the library at Columbia Junior/Senior High School, 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia. Veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of station location, and who did not receive a pin at the March 29 event at Lancaster Airport will be eligible to receive a lapel pin at this ceremony. Veterans’ family members and veterans from all periods of service are invited to attend the ceremony.
Toomey co-sponsored legislation to permanently designate March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of veterans who served during the Vietnam War. The bill has been signed into law by President Donald Trump. Following the recognition ceremony, Smucker, joined by members of Toomey’s staff, will participate in the unveiling of a portrait of retired Lt. Gen. David L. Mann, the 10th alumnus of Columbia High School to rise to the rank of general or admiral in the United States Armed Forces. Columbia High School and elementary students will participate in the program. Vietnam-era veterans who wish to attend should call Smucker’s office at 717393-0667 by Thursday, June 13, at noon.

Jim Roberts West Main Auto, 14 W. Main St., Mount Joy, is celebrating 45 years of service to the community. The business has changed quite a bit throughout those years but still aims to provide fast, friendly service at reasonable prices. Over the years, it has helped three to four generations in some families with their needs. Owner Jim Roberts opened a Western Auto Supply Company location with his wife, Sharon, on June 5, 1974. They chose to open the business in Mount Joy to be closer to family and because they liked the town and believed the business would be successful there. The original business, called Jim Roberts Western Auto, was located at 18 W. Main St., Mount Joy. As the business grew, Jim and Sharon needed more space and purchased the former Murphy five and dime building next door at 14 W. Main St. in 1982. In 1985, the business added a four-bay garage, which broadened the scope of automotive services that could be offered. Jim Roberts Western Auto became Jim Roberts West Main Auto in 2006 after the Western Auto Supply Company warehouse closed.

Cole appreciates the importance of this work. “Up in the archives, we can preserve what we’re working with for future generations,” he said, noting that it will be important to keep up with technical advancements. “Right now, we are putting it on a hard drive, but we will have to keep moving it,” he said. In addition to recognizing the significance of the work, Cole enjoys the benefits as only a model railroader can. “The archives gave me a chance to see pictures of real trains in their environments, and I can translate that into miniature,” said Cole. “Model railroaders are out there looking at the real world to convert it to miniature.” Cole’s second day per week at the museum is devoted to the Pennsylvania Landscapes layout. “This layout is 18 years in the making,” explained Cole. The model layout offers a variety of scenes associated with the Pennsylvania landscape. “If you were traveling back in 1950 throughout Pennsylvania, these are the scenes you would see,” said Cole, who pointed out cities, railyards where trains that hauled were built, and a big city station that includes a window to the locations and happenings located underground. The layout also includes farmlands, rolling hills, mountains, and a mining town. “Here are the company-owned homes,” said Cole pointing to the row of similar houses. The layout has been a labor of love for Cole. “It was almost completed when I started volunteering here,” he said, noting that the trains on the layout were stopping unexpectedly and refusing to move. “I spent time rewiring the whole thing to reduce the complexity so it would run smoothly,” he said, adding
that the layout is more detailed than others at the museum. “(The layout) doesn’t run unless (a volunteer) is here to run it because it is a little more complicated,” he said. “You can’t just turn it on and leave it.” Fortunately for both Cole and the museum, the digital command control system for the layout is the same one Cole uses for the layout in his home basement in Lancaster. Cole noted that he has created layouts using a number of different train models and gauges over his years in model railroading. The first train he received was a Lionel Hudson 464 steam engine. “It was a big heavy thing,” recalled Cole. “It had a whistle, and it was originally for the Christmas tree, but I built a layout.” Because Cole is also a woodworker, he soon traded the train for a jigsaw. “That was the end of my Lionel train, but I got into HO size,” said Cole, who took over his father’s photo studio in the family basement for his first layout. HO did not hold Cole’s interest continually, however. “Fifteen years ago, the Ogauge trains were starting to get very sophisticated,” said Cole. “They had sound systems with realistic sounds,” he added, describing the chugging sounds and the noises of the compressors and the trains letting off steam. “They even had station announcements.” But O-gauge was eventually outdone again. “They started to miniaturize electronics and put them in HO, and I got back into that again,” said Cole with a chuckle. Cole was formally recognized as the museum’s Volunteer of the Year at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission ceremony in Harrisburg on April 27. He will be honored again at the Railroad Museum’s annual Members’ Day banquet in Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 28.
