In 2010, Michelle McGovern went through the devastating agony of her first child, a son named Liam, being stillborn at 21.5 weeks. “They said it’s like being struck by lightning; it can never happen again,” recalled Michelle. As she and her husband, Mike, grieved the loss of their son, a co-worker whose daughter had experienced the loss of a child through a miscarriage told Michelle about Sarah’s Laughter, a nonprofit that offers faith-based support to couples struggling with infertility or the death of a baby. Since no groups were meeting locally then, Michelle signed up to receive emails from the organization, and as time went on she more or less forgot about Sarah’s Laughter. Michelle gave birth to her daughter, Violet, in 2012, with no complications. “She was a picture-perfect pregnancy,” noted Michelle. Her labor and delivery with Violet went quickly - something that Michelle laughs about now because of how much it reflects her daughter’s enthusiastic personality. In 2015 and 2016, however, Mike and Michelle suffered the loss of two children through miscarriages and again waded through the immense sorrow that accompanies such losses. To honor the legacy of Liam, as well as their other children, and to help other couples experiencing the loss of a child through stillbirth, the McGoverns donated a Cuddle Cot to The Women’s Place at Heart of Lancaster in 2016 and another to Women & Babies Hospital in 2017. “We did the two Cuddle Cot donations, but I wanted to do something more regularly (to help other women),” Michelle said. As Michelle rediscovered Sarah’s Laughter and began regularly listening to the organization’s podcast, which features interviews with people who See Sarah’s Laughter pg 10

Friends In Action International (FIA) has been busy at its U.S. headquarters in Middletown. The facility is the hub for FIA’s strategic planning, fundraising, and support efforts that enable local volunteers to complete construction projects in extremely remote nations of the world while the Gospel is shared with those who have never heard it. More than 80 percent of FIA’s headquarters staff is voluntary or supported by private funding, resulting in more donated dollars going directly to the indigenous people FIA serves. In May, during FIA’s first Children’s Day, six children helped stuff and seal envelopes with The Challenge, FIA’s quarterly newsletter distributed to more than 3,000 supporters. More than 50 veterans and friends celebrated Memorial Day by attending FIA’s veteran appreciation breakfast. In addition, Barry Horst has begun as a shipping and warehouse manager, and Kimberly Horst has joined FIA as a human

noted, “It’s really amazing some of the people you’ll meet along the way.” For Collins, that included someone trying to set a record while riding a unicycle and members of a group from Harvard University who were using bicycle touring to travel into various parts of the country to teach atrisk children. As Steinweg and Collins ride, they will be raising awareness of and money for Lifecycles, a mentoring program based in Lancaster County that uses bicycling as a means to instill character in young adults. “We wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to raise money for an organization that brings honor to God,” Steinweg shared. “We wanted to make it bigger than just ourselves.” Volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in
free hospitality - whether a place to wash up, get a beverage, or spend the night. “A lot of churches will open up their doors too, letting cyclists utilize their youth centers or other spaces like a hostel,” Collins noted. The cross-country ride is not the first incredible physical feat for either Steinweg or Collins, who first met while competing in the annual Lititz recCenter adult triathlon. Collins got hooked on triathlons in high school and recently accomplished an Ironman. Steinweg began doing triathlons during college and completed the Boston Marathon in 2018. The two are planning a May 2020 wedding. To donate toward the couple’s campaign for Lifecycles, readers may visit www.gofundme.com /coast-to-coast-campaign-for -lifecycles. Lifecycles leaders are planning to embark on a crosscountry bicycle tour with a group of boys next summer. games. Participants will also explore the Northwest River Trail. Other potential recreational activities may include bicycling on the Northwest River Trail, geocaching in Chickies Rock Park, and tubing on Chiques Creek. For parents - or campers - who may be a bit apprehensive about the campers paddling on the river, Columbia Crossing manager Hope Byers noted that safety will be emphasized in all activities. Tandem kayaks will be offered for students who may not feel comfortable navigating the water alone, and the campers will have adult guides accompanying them at all times. “It’s a progressive experience,” said Byers, adding that campers will learn skills and techniques before going out on the water. In addition to developing new skills, Scholz and Byers hope that participants will gain an appreciation for the Susquehanna River and become more comfortable on the water - perhaps making them lifelong river connoisseurs. “We find that kids who do get out on the water (at a younger age) are more likely to get back out there again,” Scholz remarked.

Sarah’s Laughter from pg 1 understand infertility and child loss, she began to consider starting a group in Lancaster. “(Sarah’s Laughter founder) Beth Forbus will say on the podcast, ‘If you’re thinking about starting a group in your town, get in touch with us,’” Michelle said. “I told Mike, ‘I don’t think I can NOT do this now.’” So in September 2017, Michelle bravely took the plunge to start a local Sarah’s Laughter infertility and child loss support group. “I knew that there had to be a need,” she said. “I knew how much I struggled with my losses, and I didn’t want anyone to walk through that alone.” Any woman who is experiencing infertility or grief related to miscarriage or stillbirth is welcome to attend a meeting of Sarah’s Laughter - Lancaster on
the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Community Fellowship Church, 200 Bethel Drive, Lancaster. “As women, (having children) is sort of a thing we expect we will be able to do, and when it doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to, it can be easy to feel shame. There are so many different scenarios, but we all have stuff in common and having those sort of ‘me too’ moments can be so helpful,” shared Michelle. “It’s the validation of having someone say, ‘I’ve thought that too. You’re not crazy.’ That validation lifts a weight off your shoulders.” In 2018, Michelle was thrilled to find out she was pregnant, but on May 24, 2018, the McGoverns’ daughter, Juliet Rose, was born still. They miss her greatly and continue
Fair Premium Books Available The Elizabethtown Fair has announced that premium books for the 46th annual Elizabethtown Fair are available at Brandt’s Farm Supply, Elizabethtown Borough Office, Groff Meats, White Oak Mills, Winters Heritage House Museum, and the Country Store. The books include information on livestock and competitive exhibits as well as contests for children and adults; some of the entries have early deadlines. Entry information is also available at www.etownfair.com. This year’s Elizabethtown Fair premium book cover artwork was created by Nancy Landis. Landis is a longtime area resident with a love for this community. About the cover, she explained, “The Elizabethtown Fair is more than the sum of its parts. It is a community-led exhibition of all that we accomplish in this corner of Lancaster County. This year’s cover is a tribute to all that the fair embraces, from rides and food to exhibits and opportunities.” The original artwork, painted by and donated to the Elizabethtown Fair by Landis, will be auctioned off at the annual Elizabethtown Fair auction on Friday, See Fair Book pg 12

Michelle encourages people who know someone experiencing infertility or child loss not to ignore it or pretend that it is not happening. “If you’re not sure what to say, just say, ‘I don’t know what to say because I don’t want to hurt you, but I want you to know that I care. I remember what you’re going through.’ And check in once in a while.” “One thing I say (at Sarah’s Laughter) is that we don’t compare,” said Michelle, emphasizing that no matter what a woman’s story may be or where she is in her journey, she is welcome. “Walking through that door is the hardest part, but you’re not alone.” For more information on Sarah’s Laughter - Lancaster, readers may visit www.face book.com/SarahsLaughter Lancaster or www.sarahs-laughter .com/lancastercountypa.
