Lyra Named 2021 Pawsome Pet

Congratulations to 2-year-old Lyra and her human, Peggy Buhalo of East Earl. Lyra received the most votes on our 2021 Pawsome Pet contest. According to Buhalo, Lyra is pawsome because she has a unique personality. She is a resident of the University of Pittsburgh as an emotional support cat. She resides with her parents but has many uncles and aunts all around campus. The students all love her sassy ways. Her favorite place to be is with the frat boys when they are playing games. For their win, Lyra and Peggy will receive a $50 gift card to Stoltzfus Feed & Supply in Gap.

Dutch Apple To Stage “Grumpy Old Men”

Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will bring “Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” back to its stage on Thursday, Aug. 5, after closing its previous run at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The return of the show will also mark the theater’s first show operating at 100% capacity after more than a year of following the state mandates that had been in place from COVID-19.

“Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” will play at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Aug. 5 through Saturday, Sept. 4. This is a new musical adaptation of the 1993 Warner Bros. film about two aging neighbors who have been feuding most of their lives. The two grumpy retirees, whose verbal and sometimes physical altercations date back to their high school days, peak in rivalry when a beautiful, eccentric and charming woman moves into the neighborhood.

Back to reprise their lead roles is Luther Charkurian as John Gustafson, a retired history teacher and neighbor to retired TV repairman Max Goldman, played by Rob Summers. Ariel Truax, a college professor, is played by Miranda Jane.

A range of adult dinner and show ticket prices are currently available. The show is rated PG-13 due to some adult humor. Group pricing is available for groups of 16 or more. Tickets can be reserved by calling 717-898-1900, visiting www.DutchApple.com or stopping at the box office at 510 Centerville Road in Lancaster.

Move For Life Exceeds Goal

On May 8, over 550 walkers and 5K runners from Lancaster and Lebanon counties joined together at the 35th annual Move for Life event or participated virtually by engaging in an activity of their choosing. The fun family event supports the work of Align Life Ministries. As of May 17, over $316,000 had been raised, which exceeded the $265,000 goal, and donations and pledges were still being processed.

For more information about Align Life Ministries, visit www.alignlifeministries.org.

Charles “Chuck” Weymer, a resident of St. Anne’s Retirement Community and a longtime resident of Elizabethtown, was recently recognized for his military service. On Memorial Day, May 31, at 11 a.m., Chuck and four of his brothers attended a ceremony dedicating the Veterans Memorial Wall at Cresson American Legion in Cresson, Chuck’s childhood home.

Chuck was a private first class in the U.S. Army, serving from October 1943 to March of 1946. He was at the Battle of the Bulge.

Also present at the ceremony were Chuck’s brothers Paul, Edwin, and Donald - who all also served in the Army - and Leo, who was a member of the Air Force. The Weymer brothers are the sons are Charles P. and Marie Weymer.

During the ceremony, each honoree was presented with a plaque. The event also included the national anthem, an invocation, remarks from the Cresson American Legion commander, a keynote address by Cambria County president commissioner Thomas Chernisky, two verses of “America the Beautiful,” and a patriotic medley.

Chuck and his wife, Sherri, are the parents of Debra Garrett, wife of Randy, of Elizabethtown.

Charles “Chuck” Weymer (center) and four of his brothers were honored for their military service. Elizabethtown Rotary Club president Don (right) presents a check to ECHOS development coordinator Katlyn.

Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS) has received a grant from the Elizabethtown Rotary Club.

The club’s support provided a stackable washer and dryer for the ECHOS Enrichment Center as it expands into a new building in the Community Place on Washington complex, which is anticipated this fall. These appliances will allow guests in need at the Enrichment Center to have clean clothes for job interviews, work, personal hygiene, and quality of life. The local Rotary Club also advocated on ECHOS’ behalf and secured a matching contribution from District Rotary 7390, allowing ECHOS to purchase a second washer and dryer set.

Beyond financial support, local Rotarians frequently donate their time, volunteering for ECHOS in a variety of ways, including cleaning ECHOS’ offices and program apartments.
