LCFCA Seeks Volunteers With Recruitment Campaign By Chelsea Peifer

Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people - and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its numbers have slowly dwindled. Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association See Volunteers pg 7

The Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association launched a recruitment campaign this year in an effort to meet the growing need for volunteer members of the 67 fire departments and companies throughout the county.

The eighth annual Chiques Challenge, dubbed by regular participants as the “Chi Cha,” will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11. Hosted by the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC), the duathlon event includes a run on part of the Northwest River Trail and through the streets of historic Marietta, followed by a kayak journey on the Susquehanna River. Competitors will begin at the Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Perry Ligon of Harrisburg is one of several competitors who have participated in the duathlon since it began. “This will be my eighth year, and I guess the real challenge for me comes from the river,” said Ligon. “I’m an ultramarathon runner, so I consider the run the easy part. The river, however, can hold surprises.” “One year the water level was low and obstacles seemed to be everywhere from the exposed rocks that litter the river’s bottom,” continued Ligon. “Another year the river was high and flowing fast. There were just a few obstacles, they were submerged, and that may have been my fastest year in the kayak. Two years ago the humidity was oppressive, but last year’s weather was perfect from what I recall.” Individuals may register to complete the race alone or as a team with one participant handling the running portion and the other taking on the kayaking. A team of two counts as one entry. Participants must be age 16 or older. To register, interested individuals may visit www.parivertowns.com or call 717-684-5249 by Friday, July 27. Space is limited to 150 participants, and registration may close earlier if the maximum is reached. A T-shirt is included with the entry fee, and professional split timing will be provided. Volunteers will be stationed at the Marietta Boat Launch, Robert Mowrer Drive, Marietta, beginning at 6:30 a.m. to assist with personal kayak drop-off. All kayaks must have a valid launch permit per the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and each kayaker is required to wear a life vest equipped with a whistle. Kayak rentals are available through Shank’s Mare Outfitters or Chiques Rock Outfitters and

can be delivered to the site. Participants should meet at Columbia River Park at 7:30 a.m., and a shuttle bus will leave promptly at 8 a.m. to transport participants to East Donegal Township Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta. Team members who are kayaking will be shuttled to the Marietta Boat Launch. Runners will take off at 8:30 a.m. The approximately 4-mile course will follow the Northwest River Trail from Riverfront Park to its end in Marietta, then runners will continue under a railroad tunnel onto Decatur Street and throughout Marietta before finishing at the access point of the Marietta Boat Launch. A water station and restroom will be available for participants at the boat access point, where their kayaks will be waiting. Kayakers will then paddle a marked course for approximately 2 and a half miles down the Susquehanna River to the finish at Columbia River Park. Chiques Challenge will end with a brief awards ceremony at approximately 10:30 a.m. For individual entrants, trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the first-place male and female overall finishers in the 40 and under and over 40 divisions. For team entrants, cash prizes will be distributed to the first-place finishers in two categories: teams with an average age of 40 and under and teams with an average age over 40. Medals will also be awarded to the top male and female runners, to the top male and female kayakers, and to the first- and second-place male and female finishers in six age brackets. Plus, three cash prizes will be awarded in a post-race drawing using bib numbers. Chiques Challenge proceeds support SVCC and its efforts as a nonprofit organization to serve the communities of Marietta, Wrightsville, and Columbia. Pictured on front: The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce will host the eighth annual Chiques Challenge on Aug. 11. Individuals and two-person teams are welcome to participate in the duathlon event, which will include a run on the Northwest River Trail and through Marietta, followed by a kayak journey on the Susquehanna River.

Identity theft is a serious concern that affects millions of people. The 2017 Identity Fraud Study, released by Javelin Strategy and Research, found that 15.4 million consumers in the United States were affected by identity theft of some form in 2016. In those instances, $16 billion was stolen. Protecting one’s identity is not as complicated as it may seem, and it can safeguard consumers against fraud and theft. People should password protect all smartphones and other digital devices. Many are used to transmit sensitive information and may store passwords and other data that connects to financial institutions. People should never click on links in unsolicited emails. Such links may contain malware or computer viruses. People should not provide Social Security numbers, birth dates, or other personal information to unsolicited callers, no matter how official they may sound. The same password or PIN should not be used on multiple sites. Passwords should vary, and a combination of numbers, symbols, and uppercase letters should be used to make it more difficult for thieves to decode. People should not keep all credit cards or important identification cards in a wallet at all times. Private records and statements should be shredded or destroyed. People should monitor their credit report. Consumers can receive a free credit report from the three major credit agencies free of charge each year. Any inconsistencies should be addressed and reported promptly.

The Chamber’s free ice cream social will take place on Aug. 19, while supplies last. In the event of inclement weather on the evening of a concert, the concert will be moved indoors to New Path Community Church, 22 W. Main St., Mount Joy. At the first three concerts, tickets will be available to purchase for the Chamber’s 23rd annual chicken barbecue, which is set to take place on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. There is a set cost for dinners, which will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll and butter, applesauce, a whoopie pie, and a beverage. Folks may also opt to purchase a half-chicken and beverage. The Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce is made up of approximately 200 businesses of all sizes, as well as churches, organizations, nonprofit groups, and

individuals. Members pay minimal yearly dues depending on the number of employees. Information on members is published in the Chamber’s yearly business directory and on the Chamber website. Members can also take advantage of advertising in the Chamber newsletter, email blasts, and other advertising. The Chamber holds monthly luncheons on the second Wednesday of each month, monthly mixers at member businesses, and ribbon cuttings and grand openings for its members. Every year, the Chamber awards seven scholarships totaling $4,500 to local students, and it also holds community events including Music in Memorial Park and visits with Santa. The Chamber is currently in the process of refurbishing the large welcome sign at the east end of town. The Mount Joy Chamber is self-funded with member dues and upgraded memberships and two yearly fundraisers: the annual banquet and benefit auction held each spring and the chicken barbecue held on the third Saturday in August every year. The Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce was established in 1939. For more information, readers may visit www.mountjoychamber.com or call 717-653-0773.

Summer is traditionally the time for road trips and vacations, so this themed membership show will focus on things on and off the road. Members of the art association have depicted their interpretation of roadside attractions in a variety of mediums and techniques. Additionally, Joanne Mark’s artwork will be displayed in the LCAA’s Steinmetz Gallery from July 22 to Aug. 16 in an exhibit titled “Figures: Ancient and Contemporary.” Recently, Mark has been using a limited palette to create subtly toned figures on soft backgrounds. 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, through Thursday, Aug. 9. “The students will learn vocabulary about the different modes of transportation available in Europe as well as packing items and famous destinations,” said Lisa Sempsey, who is one of four certified educators who will teach various aspects of German music and dances during the camp. “The music will be a wonderful mix of traditional pieces as well as students experiencing and creating music to accompany their ‘journey’ across the German-speaking parts of Europe. Additionally, the campers will get the opportunity to create and play instruments from some nontraditional materials,” she explained. “It’s going to be a blast!” Sommer Singspiel, which in German means “play and sing in the summer,” is in its fourth year. The camp is an outgrowth of the Cultural Grant and Scholarship Fund of the Liederkranz, which aims to provide opportunities for students

Your

to experience German language and culture. In addition to music, the camp will focus on experiences with German language, authentic food, cultural traditions, and soccer and other outdoor games. A sharing showcase on the final afternoon will give students a venue in which to share their experiences with their friends and families. “It is going to be very much a learn-by-doing camp, and while it will be very valuable and meaningful, it will be taught in a fun, kidfriendly way,” said founding director Drue Bullington. “(Sommer Singspiel) engages the younger family members and promotes in them a love of community musicmaking (and) a sense of cultural heritage and gives exposure to singing, playing, and moving - all things kids love to do naturally - in tandem with developmentally appropriate German language learning interspersed with experiences that stem from German cultural traditions.” Bullington shared one parent’s perspective, quoting the individual

Randall K. Miller

as saying, “I love that German language, music, and culture is experienced rather than taught. For instance, rather than just telling the kids the word for ‘apple strudel’’ and that it is a popular German dish and maybe giving them a taste of strudel, they involve the children in making strudel.” The Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim, was founded in 1880 as a singing society by German immigrants in Lancaster city. It continues today as a dynamic family organization dedicated to perpetuating and amplifying the founders’ original purpose through song, dance, language, art, education, and international cultural exchange. The Sommer Singspiel camp will be held at the Liederkranz. There is a cost per student to attend, with discounts for Liederkranz members and for multiple family members. Registrations may be submitted at https://llksingspiel.word press.com. For more information about the camp, readers may contact Bullington at drue.bullington@gmail.com or 717-940-9927.

(LCFCA) Recruitment and Retention Committee spokesman Duane Hagelgans said that while some stations do very well, most are struggling to have and maintain enough members to provide adequate service. “Some municipalities are seeing a need and must pay for firefighters; (however), there are many municipalities in Lancaster County that can survive and provide adequate protection with volunteers, if we have enough members of our communities willing to make the sacrifice to help their neighbors,” Hagelgans stated. Earlier this year, several Lancaster County volunteer firefighters and rescuers shared their experiences in on-camera interviews for videos as part of an ongoing countywide recruitment effort led by the LCFCA to draw in volunteers for the county’s 67 volunteer fire companies and search-and-rescue squads. The videos may be viewed by searching for “Lancaster County Volunteer Recruitment” at www.youtube.com. Hagelgans said that the LCFCA has seen an uptick in volunteer inquiries since the videos were released but is still well below the number of volunteers needed. The campaign has also included advertisements on the internet and television and at movie theaters, with radio ads coming soon. “If we can find people to give a little, we can all work together for the safety of our communities,” said Hagelgans, adding that individuals should not feel like they are signing up for a lifetime commitment either - just a few years will make a difference. Plus,

Hagelgans emphasized that not all volunteers run into burning buildings. Willing individuals are needed to help with administrative functions, to serve as fire police to direct traffic, and to assist with exterior firefighting work. No special skillset is required, as training will be provided. For Lisa Breneman, who volunteers with Fire Department Mount Joy, it was seeing her father volunteer that sparked an interest in her. “Initially, I had approached it to just become a driver only and help them get out during daytime calls,” explained Breneman. That soon grew into an interest to do more than drive, as Breneman said she wanted to learn how to run in and assist those who were injured, and help extinguish the fires. That interest eventually led into a career for Breneman, who now works full-time as a fire investigator while continuing to volunteer locally. “It’s rewarding to help people in the community, to see that sense of relief in their eyes when you arrive on the scene, and try to calm the situation at hand,” shared Breneman. Providing fire prevention training at schools and watching the children’s excitement is another part of volunteering

that Breneman loves. “You feel a sense of purpose when helping to serve the community, and I’d love to see more young people volunteer,” Breneman said. Most fire companies offer junior membership opportunities for students age 16 and older. Artus and Breneman both

praised the camaraderie at their respective fire stations. “The fire service is a camaraderie and a brother and sisterhood,” Hagelgans remarked. “We are a family, and we will be your family.” To learn more or sign up to volunteer, readers may visit www.becomeafirefighter.org.

Ruhl’s UMC from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer

It is a summer tradition that cannot be missed, an event that neighbors and members of Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC) mentally mark on their calendars and plan vacations around to be sure not to miss the fun: the annual community picnic. This year’s event is set to take place on Saturday, July 21, at the Ruhl’s UMC picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim. All are welcome, and admission is free. Church members will begin selling the locally famous homemade chicken corn soup by the quart at 9 a.m. Folks are asked to bring their own containers to transport the soup. Soup will also be available to purchase by the bowl throughout the day. “It’s our traditional recipe passed on from way back,” said organizer Gail Ruhl. “This is the only time of the year that we make that recipe. It’s the old-fashioned version with handmade rivels, and it’s made in big vats and cooks for a long time so it tastes really good.” Lunch will be available for purchase beginning at 11 a.m., and the kitchen will remain open until 8 p.m. Options will include hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, sausages, fresh watermelon, homemade baked goods, and hand-dipped ice cream. A children’s tent with activities and prizes will open at approximately 11 a.m. A bounce house and barrel train rides - all at no cost - will also be part of the festivities. Volleyball courts and a playground will also be open for use.

The Unforgettable Big Band will return for the fourth consecutive year to perform a selection of big band and swing music from 5 to 8 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the show. Cake walks, which will be free and open to people of all ages, will also take place during the evening concert. Gail said that while the picnic was traditionally used to help raise funds for Sunday school initiatives at the church, in recent years proceeds from food sales have been used to maintain the picnic grove, and that will continue this year. In addition to the annual community picnic, the grove is the site of a week of evening services each summer. The Grove Services will be held at 7 p.m. each evening from Sunday, July 22 through Friday, July 27. The speakers for each evening are as follows: the Rev. Larry Dunlap, the Rev. James Price, the Rev. Rick Rimert, the Rev. Tom Kinter, the Rev. Randy Leitzel, and the Rev. Blaine Wenger. The public is welcome to attend. For more details, readers may call the church at 717-665-3400 or www.ruhlschurch.org. Pictured on front: Ruhl’s United Methodist Church will host its annual community picnic on July 21 at its picnic grove in Manheim. Chicken corn soup and a variety of food will be available to purchase. Children’s activities, cake walks, and an outdoor concert by the Unforgettable Big Band are also planned.

Recreational Programs Set The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee to take part in the programs, and programs will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. To register, readers may call 717-295-2055. Registration is required by noon on the business day before the event. Bird Feeder Fun will be offered on Saturday, July 21, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The event is open to all ages. Attendees will create their own birdfeeder out of recycled materials to take home to hang in their own backyard. Nature Games and Creek Play will be offered to children age 4 and up on Sunday, July 22, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Pavilion 2. A series of group games that simulate animal relationships with each other and with the environment will be played. Participants will cool down with a wade in the Conestoga River. Nets will be available to catch and examine what critters are living in the river. Munchkin Science - Butterflies and Caterpillars, open to children ages 3 to 5 with an adult, will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24. A program about caterpillars and butterflies will be followed by catching butterflies and observing caterpillars outside.

Live-Fire Exercises Scheduled Fort Indiantown Gap is scheduled to host live-fire training exercises during the month of July between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. Exercises will include artillery training from Monday, July 23, through Thursday, July 26. Fort Indiantown Gap has announced training as a courtesy to nearby residents, as it is expected to result in increased noise levels. The training schedule is subject to change based on the military training mission. Fort Indiantown Gap is the only live-fire, maneuver military training facility in Pennsylvania. It serves as headquarters to the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and Pennsylvania National Guard and offers more than 17,000 acres and 140 train-

ing areas and facilities for yearround training. The installation balances one of the region’s most ecologically diverse areas with a military mission that annually supports 20,000 Pennsylvania National Guard personnel and more than 120,000 additional personnel from other branches of service, multinational partners and interagency partners at the federal, state and local levels. To learn more about Fort Indiantown Gap, readers may visit www.ftig.png.pa.gov or www.facebook.com/ftindiantown gap. Individuals may call the installation’s community information line at 717-861-2007 to hear a recorded message with dates and times of community activities and training events.

Four days after being named 2018 recipient of the Shining Light Ellen Coach Award by Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, Lisa Wood, special education teacher at George Washington Elementary School in Lancaster, was still processing the experience. “I am still trying to find the words to express how honored I am, said Wood. “I am still floating. Wood received the award at a special event hosted by GOTR at The Inn at Leola Village on the evening of May 31. The Ellen Award, which was first given to GOTR coach Falon Doutrich in 2017, is named for Ellen McCabe, the stepmother of GOTR Lancaster program director Jennifer West. West, along with Lancaster GOTR executive director Carrie Johnson; board member Kate Mullen; West’s daughters, Alex and Regan; and Doutrich, formed the selection committee that chose Wood from more than 60 nominees. According to Johnson, coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, principals, staff members, colleagues, spouses, family members, friends, parents, and the girls who make up the GOTR teams. Wood’s relationship with GOTR began in 2012 when she started helping to coach Team Empowered, composed of girls in the School District of Lancaster with physical and intellectual disabilities. “Seeing the change in the girls was really inspiring, said Wood. “I wanted to be part of that. In 2015, Wood began coaching at Washington. During the spring season, the two Washington teams boasted a total of 33 girls. “I rallied the girls by taking them to my

classroom, and I told them about (GOTR) and showed them videos, said Wood of the enrollment. “The girls wanted to be part of this amazing thing. One of those girls, Alashana Ramos, nominated Wood for the Ellen Award. Ramos had tragically lost a cousin this year, and she wrote about how Wood was there for her during that difficult time. Wood said she has been especially impressed with components of the GOTR curriculum. “(Understanding) empathy is a huge strategy in the (GOTR) toolbox, she said. “How to make a friend and how to be a good friend is another great lesson. Wood also lauded the requirement that teams complete a community impact project. “Our community impact project (involved) a third-grader who was severely burned the day after Christmas, said Wood. “Our girls decided to put together a sunshine basket for her. After reaching out to the child’s parents, the coaches learned that the girl would need bedding and that she loves unicorns. “The teams held a flower sale and raised $305 that went toward buying new things for her bedroom in the unicorn theme, said Wood. “We got bedding, pillows, and wall decals. Johnson noted that when Ellen, who passed away in the fall of 2016, was helping to create the award, she asked that each winner be given $500 to pay it forward to a charity of her choice. Wood has chosen the Washington Elementary TEAM mentor partnership program. She will donate her winnings to that program through the Lancaster Education Foundation. Wood also received a special bracelet. Wood noted that she believes she has benefited from coaching
