“Follies” Looks Back At The Past BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If you had a chance to relive the past, would you take it? That’s the question at the center of “Follies,” which will be performed at Susquehanna Stage from Friday, July 23, through Sunday, Aug. 1. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “Follies” reunites
performers from a musical revue that ran between World War I and World War II until closing in 1941. “The theater where the Follies were is being torn down,” said Sharon Boyer, who portrays Heidi Schiller in the show and is also the vocal director. “The characters come together 30 years after the last Follies, in 1971, to reminisce.” See “Follies” pg 6

it bulls get a bad rap, and Laurie Yost is working to change that. Yost, the owner of Playful Pups Retreat, 406 Hershey Road, Elizabethtown, is also the founder of Pitties.Love.Peace, a pit bull-focused rescue and foster program. Playful Pups will host a Bully Bash Community Pawty on Saturday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to benefit the rescue. “We’ll have vendors inside and outside offering lots of different things,” Yost said. “We’ll have a food truck.” The day will also feature face painting, a dunk tank, Hershey’s whoopie pies and giveaway baskets. Adoptable dogs will also be on site. “All of the money raised will benefit Pitties.Love.Peace,” Yost said. “The money will go toward covering vet costs, because those can really add up.” Yost founded Playful Pups in 2010, followed by the pit bull rescue a year later.
“If you’re looking to adopt an animal or if you just want to check out a fun, animal-centered day, you should come out.”
Yost, who owns several dogs, including a Great Dane and a cane corso, said she can’t imagine her life without her furry family members. “I just love dogs,” she said. “They give unconditional love and devotion, and you don’t get that from humans. They love you no matter what. They don’t care what you look like or if you’re in a bad mood. They just love you.” The Bully Bash Community Pawty, which is open to any dog breeds and their owners, is the first major fundraiser for Pitties.Love.Peace, she noted. “I’m really excited for it,” she stated. “If you’re looking to adopt an animal or if you just want to check out a fun, animal-centered day, you should come out. We’ll have lots of animal-related vendors and lots of food, and who doesn’t love food? It’s going to be a fun, family-friendly day.” For more information on the Bully Bash Community Pawty, visit www.playfulpupsretreat.com or search for “Bully Bash Community Pawty” on Facebook.
“Follies” cast members include (from left) Lydia Alkinburgh, Lorraine Ford, Mike Kohler, Lindsay Bretz-Morgan and Charis McMellen.
Preserving The Past BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Maytown may be tiny, but the town’s past packs a powerful punch. “For a smaller town, we have a tremendous amount of history,” said Bob Lescallette, curator of the Maytown Historical Society’s museum and one of the founders of the historical society. That history dates to May 1, 1760 (or 1762, depending on whom you ask … but that’s a story for another day), and it’s the mission of the Maytown Historical Society to make sure it’s not forgotten.

While Pitties.Love.Peace is a foster organization, Playful Pups provides day care and overnight boarding for dogs. Yost also has a location of Playful Pups on Milton Grove Road in Elizabethtown. “Starting Playful Pups really came out of me not finding a good option for overnight boarding that offered upscale care, enrichment, activities and fun for dogs,” Yost recalled. “A dog resort is what people want. Everybody wants fivestar care for their dog.”

“I’ve always been into helping rescue dogs,” she stated. “I’m a big advocate of bully breeds. They get a bad rap. There is so much stigma associated with the breed because we see so many negative news stories about that. But they are amazing dogs. The good far outweighs the bad.”

Past from pg 1 Lescallette and some friends started thinking about forming a historical society in the mid 1980s, about the time of Maytown’s 225th birthday. In the beginning, the Maytown Historical Society met at a local church before acquiring the building of its current location, at 4 W. High St., in 2002. “This building dates to about 1760, and it’s one of the original, if not the oldest, Members of the Maytown Historical Society (from left) Bob Lescallette, Linda Good, Gordon Nell and Skip Nell structures in town,” explained are working hard to preserve Maytown’s past. young people, because when you get the kids involved, there’s hope for the future,” she shared. Good has also been instrumental in setting up an ongoing display at the Maytown municipal building focused on the historical society to help spread the word about the group. Fundraising for the society and museum includes special events throughout the year, such as Mayfest, which the group plans to host in May of 2022. The society will also present a speaker series beginning in November and will hold a picnic for members and prospective members on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. This month, the museum will be open on Saturday, July 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but there are other opportunities to see the site, said Skip Nell, president of the society. “We are really available anytime,” he noted. “If someone wants to come by, just call, and we can meet you.” Gordon said the society’s mission is not only to preserve history, but also to preserve the very organization created to fulfill that mission. “An awful lot of work, time and effort went into creating the museum and starting the historical society,” he stated. “We want to see both continue.” For more information, search for “Maytown Historical Society” on Facebook.

Congratulations to 2-year-old Lyra and her human, Peggy Buhalo of East Earl. Lyra received the most votes on our 2021 Pawsome Pet contest. According to Buhalo, Lyra is pawsome because she has a unique personality. She is a resident of the University of Pittsburgh as an emotional support cat. She resides with her parents but has many uncles and aunts all around campus. The students all love her sassy ways. Her favorite place to be is with the frat boys when they are playing games. For their win, Lyra and Peggy will receive a $50 gift card to Stoltzfus Feed & Supply in Gap.

Lindsay Bretz-Morgan, who plays Sally in the show, said the musical doesn’t have a typical happy ending or saccharine sweetness to it. “The characters in this show are very relatable,” she stated. “These are people who are going through life, but they are not truly happy. They’re just going with the flow of life and where it takes them, and I think a lot of people can relate to that.” Mike Kohler, who portrays Ben, said “Follies” isn’t performed often because it’s a technically challenging show. “The music is hard, the lyrics are hard, the costumes are elaborate and there’s a lot of different styles of dance in the show,” he noted. Gagliano said that despite the challenges of putting on “Follies,” the result is well worth it. “The music is fabulous, the costumes are incredible, and the dancing is great,” she stated. “It’s just an allaround wonderful show.” “Follies” celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Broadway debut this year, and Susquehanna Stage will hold a special event, “Follies at 50,” on opening night, July 23. The event will feature a wine and cheese social before the performance and a catered event after the show. For more information or to purchase tickets to “Follies,” visit www.susquehanna stage.com.

The show focuses on two couples - Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone. The two women were showgirls in the Follies and, despite their outwardly successful lives, all four people are fundamentally unhappy. The cast features young adults who portray various Follies performers in their younger years. “They are sort of ghosts on stage, playing the performers from the past,” explained choreographer Jill Gagliano. “They are onstage, but they don’t really interact with the current-day characters.” “Follies” is a bittersweet show, said Lorraine Ford, who portrays Phyllis. “The show is a really interesting exploration of life,” she stated. “Wouldn’t you like to look back and watch a movie of your life and see, as a mature adult, how the decisions you made as a 21-yearold are affecting you now?” Gagliano noted that audience members may seem themselves in the characters. “Think about going to your high school reunion,” she remarked. “You might go in with preconceived notions of who people were or what you thought you would be or who you would become, but now maybe your life hasn’t turned out the way you thought it would.”

“We follow through with things they may have started and provide support so they don’t feel out there and alone.” Mothers who choose to actively parent often need to learn how to do that while working, but according to executive director Matthew Neff, women who make an adoption plan may be especially in need of aftercare. “When a woman makes an adoption plan, it is very emotionally hard,” said HOHC house mom and Matthew’s wife, Callie. “She may need help to navigate the roles and the relation- House of His Creation staff (from left) Michelle ships around that.” Callie Gibbs, Matthew Neff, and Callie Neff are ready to noted that when the pregnan- welcome clients at their new location in Lititz. cy was not the woman’s first, other issues may be involved. “(When a woman has) multiple children (who are) part of their story, then it becomes reunification or rebuilding relationship with children they haven’t th actively been parenting,” said Callie. “Those children wouldYard Sale: 7am-2pm n’t necessarily live here, but we would help (the woman) negoVENDORS WANTED Donation: tiate toward a goal that may $25.00 per space include parenting rights in some cases.” Aftercare proChicken BBQ gram goals include education $ 10.00 in mindful parenting, empow10am-2pm or erment to access community until sold out 1/2 Chicken, resources, and engaging parBaked Potato, ents to connect with other parApplesauce & Roll ents. In the last five years, the ministry originally known as House of His Creation (HOHC) and briefly called Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM), has been through a number of changes. After becoming FORM in 2016, the ministry moved from Lititz Pike to the Brickerville area, but as of late 2019, the name had reverted to HOHC, and in February 2021, the ministry moved to the site of a former bed-and-breakfast at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz. Through all the changes, the mission of the ministry has been to affirm life by providing women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. In its new location, HOHC will continue to provide those services through maternity housing for women age 18 and up - especially women leaving abusive situations - who are in the first two trimesters of pregnancy and have been sober for several months. The women must also be willing to consider adoption and parenting plans and to take advantage of growth opportunities, and be educated toward reaching goals. Client housing for four women is provided on the second floor of the house, where each room has a private bathroom. The family living model includes individualized case management and education about basic life skills, finances, and parenting options, along with recreational activities. Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, noted that a change from former programming models is the aftercare services that are available for one year after the mother is discharged from the program. “That means that I would come and do a home visit and assess how they’re doing,” said Gibbs.

To protect the health and safety of all individuals involved, 4-H members and their families were unable to join in the tradition of lunch with the Rotary Club and an auction of the strawberries exhibited. However, Rotary Club members contributed over $1,500 toward the 4-H members’ projects. Through Sunday, Aug. 8, the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, will feature a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) traveling show, “Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland.” The exhibition brings to life the excitement of Coney Island, showing visitors how its world of attractions has become a touchstone for American mass culture and popular recreation. This new traveling exhibition from NEH on the Road explores America’s playground as a place and an idea, examining its persistent presence in the American imagination. The exhibition is arranged chronologically, with each section titled after contemporary quotations that also communicate changing popular perceptions about Coney Island through the generations. Throughout the exhibition, artifacts display how the modern American mass-culture industry was born at Coney Island. This exhibition investigates the rise of American leisure and traces Coney Island’s influence on amusement parks and popular culture throughout the country. Photographs, ephemera, film clips, and hands-on interactives immerse visitors in the experience of Coney Island. For tickets and details, visit www.northmuseum.org.

Lancaster County 4-H and The Rotary Club of Lancaster partnered to host the 54th annual 4-H Strawberry Roundup and Auction on June 2. Participants ranged from first-time exhibitors to repeat champion growers. Leah Brenneman of Manheim was awarded Grand Champion for her strawberries, which were sold to Andy Fletcher for $750. Reserve Champion Gabrielle Anger sold her strawberries for $375 to Tom Baum. The proceeds from the strawberry auction go to the 4-H growers and the Max Smith Scholarship Fund. At the event, 4-H members participated in strawberry DNA extraction and made homemade whipped cream for strawberry parfaits while their project record books and strawberries were being judged. Although educational goals, skill building and job attainment are always on the forefront for adult learners entering our program, skilling up after the pandemic takes on a whole new meaning and will be an important step for many workers who lost their jobs during COVID-19 restrictions. For some, it will mean improving basic literacy in reading, math, or English. For others, it will mean career exploration and sharpening skills to move into postsecondary education or training. The Success Centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties are places where adults can get the support they need to build skills so that they can transform their lives, sustain their families and strengthen their communities.* What skills and knowledge do you have to share with an adult student to help them reach their goals?

County Treasures - Heritage Press Museum noted that those studying the American Revolution or the War of 1812 are often interested in learning about that particular piece of equipment. Lancaster holds a littleknown place in American history because of its printing prowess, noted Kulakowsky. “The Articles of Confederation were written and agreed upon in York, but York didn’t have any big printers, so (the Articles were) printed on King Street (in Lancaster),” he explained. The .918 Club is working to complete the Heritage Press Education Center at Thaddeus Stevens School of Technology. The eighth annual Lancaster Printers Fair, which will be held on the 300 block of North Queen Street, Lancaster on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17 and 18, will benefit the center. A Wayzgoose and Surplus Letter-

press Sale will take place at 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster on Sept. 17 from 5 to 9 p.m. Kulakowsky explained that a wayzgoose is an event that traditionally involved printing competitions and eating roasted goose. More information about the event may be found at www.lancasterprintersfair.org.

The Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster, has its roots in the Lancaster Cultural History Museum, once located in the Lancaster Trust Performing Arts Center. Ken Kulakowsky is one of the volunteers at the Heritage Press and a member of the .918 Club, a group dedicated to preserving the art of printing and named for the height of a piece of type. Volunteers from the club man the museum when it is open Thursdays through Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., and the first and third Fridays of each month from 5 to 9 p.m. More information about the museum may be found at www.918club.org. According to Kulakowsky, in 2004, the cultural museum received a donation of printing equipment, and the organization sought volunteers who had experience with letter presses. An exhibit was set up and ran from April until the end of 2004. In early 2005, more equipment was donated, and the exhibit
opened again in April, with the display running until 2009, when a state budget cut forced the museum to close. The printing equipment was not technically part of the museum collection, so the printers sought a new home, eventually landing at Building Character, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, where the members print bags for the many crafters who sell items there. Kulakowsky said the volunteers are happy to demonstrate the presses and even allow visitors to print items such as coasters. “We have no canned presentation,” he explained. “We will spend five minutes to five hours (with visitors).” The museum asks that groups set up an appointment to visit. Among the presses on display is a 1750 common press. “This press was in the Smithsonian for a while,” said Kulakowsky, who added that when the press was found in the basement of a church in Maryland, someone who knew of the club contacted club representatives. A Ben Franklin-era press is on display, and Kulakowsky
