Linking these efforts is intended to ensure maximum long-term impact on water quality and allow Lancaster County to continue to be the “garden spot” of the region, said the trust’s executive director, Karen Martynick. “We believe (that) a big part of the See Farmland Preservation pg 3

Farmland Preservation from pg 1 solution to Lancaster County reaching its required Chesapeake Bay reductions and improving local water quality includes protecting our farmland and finding farmers the resources to increase their conservation practices,” she commented. Lancaster Farmland Trust currently has more than 40 farmers on the waiting list for preservation. To identify the strategic farms for preservation and water quality improvement, these farms will be prioritized according to impairment of the local watershed, proximity to surface water, conservation practices already in place, and opportunities for improvement. All farms currently preserved by Lancaster Farmland Trust are enrolled in the Smart Farms program, and many are already engaged in conservation practices on their own. Because Lancaster Farmland Trust annually monitors each preserved farm, the trust’s staff members are able to track the effectiveness of conservation practices and maximize the financial investment made on each farm. Laura Brenner, communications coordinator for the trust, noted that conservation efforts utilized in Lancaster County include streambank fencing to keep livestock out of streams and reduce farm runoff and erosion into streams, physical improvements to barns with spouting to channel rainwater into designated areas, concrete barnyards, and curbs to keep nutrients in place. Additionally, larger manure storage pits allow farmers to apply manure when it
can be used by their crops, instead of when the pit is full and needs to be emptied. Lancaster Farmland Trust is an active participant in water quality efforts within Lancaster County, as well as throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The trust believes this unique approach of combining land preservation with stewardship is easily replicated in other communities throughout the Chesapeake Bay region. Through the grant period, Lancaster Farmland Trust will document the practices and findings to share with other land trusts. According to www.lancaster farmlandtrust.org, the trust works in partnership with landowners to preserve their farms and way of life for future generations - ensuring that farms will be in agricultural use forever, eliminating the threat of development, and protecting the rich, valuable soils - by placing a conservation easement on their property. A conservation easement is a legally enforceable land preservation agreement between a landowner and the trust restricting real estate development, commercial and industrial uses, and certain other activities on a property that are mutually agreed upon by the trust and the property owner. Each easement is customized to the particular needs and future plans of each individual farm family. For more information about the grant and the water quality improvement efforts, readers may call the Lancaster Farmland Trust office at 717-687-8484.

Elizabethtown College recently partnered with SAS to offer a joint certificate for students in the college’s data analytics minor. SAS is a data analytics company based in Cary, N.C. Additionally, Elizabethtown College is offering a data analytics minor along with a
capstone course providing real-world problem solving with regional firms. The certificate is available to data analytics students at no additional cost and is tied directly to classes students already take in the minor, helping them gain in-demand skills for the digital age and real-world
learning opportunities. Upon completion of the required courses, students will receive the SAS certificate at graduation along with their diploma. The certification will allow Elizabethtown students to compete at a higher level, opening opportunities to jobs
they might not have been prepared for without the SAS certificate. The partnership with SAS brings with it free teaching materials, a discount on SAS books, support services, professional development opportunities, and free and low-cost SAS software options.

A decorative sign displayed in the Willow Street home where Nathanael Groff lives with his parents, Tim and Jill, reads “Not lucky but blessed.” Since third grade, Nathanael has carried the nickname “Lucky,” but after surviving stage IV colorectal cancer, Nathanael understands just how blessed he truly is. Nathanael graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in 2002 and served in the Navy from 2004 to 2008. After moving back to Willow Street, he worked in auto sales. In the early part of 2017, however, he began losing weight rapidly and experienced debilitating stomach pains. Finally, on June 15, 2017, Nathanael went to the emergency room. Things moved rapidly from there. Along with the colorectal cancer diagnosis, Nathanael learned that the cancer had spread to his liver. A coloscopy bag was placed on June 19, and a month later, an abscess the size of a tennis ball was removed. Nathanael began chemotherapy in July, which continued into September. Surgery in October removed seven tumors from his liver. November saw the start of radiation therapy five days a week. Chemotherapy, radiation, and constant pain continued through January. On March 20, 2018, a rectal tumor was removed, and he began a chemotherapy regimen that will conclude in September. Currently, he is considered cancerfree, but he will receive PET and MRI scans every three months for the foreseeable future. Due to his illness, the Groffs which include Nathanael’s younger sister, Devon Rohrer, and her family - missed their annual trip to Ocean City, N.J. Nathanael is anticipating this year’s trip, which has been scheduled for after his final chemotherapy treatment. “Once I get there, (it will signify) I’m done, I’ve accomplished it,” Nathanael said. To support Nathanael, his classmate Justine Metzger and her father, Ron Metzger, have organized Score for a Cure, a charity basketball tournament and three-point shooting contest. Proceeds from the event will help to offset Nathanael’s medical bills and will benefit the Cancer Patient Support Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute.
“The Barshinger Center saved my life,” Nathanael remarked. “(The staff members) always gave me an option and a hope.” Additionally, the institute supplied several referrals and chemo classes and provided pain management, transportation when needed, chaplains, social workers, a nurse navigator, and financial aid. “The place means a lot to us, and I’ll be forever grateful to them, that’s for sure,” Nathanael said. Score for a Cure will be held at the Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville. The tournament will run from 5 to approximately 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, and will resume on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 8 a.m. Spectators will be admitted free of charge, although donations will be accepted. Some concessions will be available for purchase. The Metzgers hope to have at least eight teams, which will play three times and then have semifinal and final rounds. The games will be refereed by Ron and Tim’s professional PIAA colleagues. The three-point shooting contest is slated to begin at noon on Aug. 4. Anyone age 14 or older may enter the shooting contest, and the tournament is open to men’s rec league teams. Each contestant will have one minute to take 15 shots from five positions on the threepoint shooting line. The winners from each of three divisions will face off to determine the overall winner. Costs have been set to enter the tournament and the shooting contest, with a discounted price for those who also order an event T-shirt. Folks may register by following the link posted on the Facebook event page “Score for a Cure Charity 3-Point Shooting Contest.” Registrations will also be accepted at the event. For more information or to learn about sponsoring the event or making a donation, readers may contact Justine at sfaccbasketball@gmail.com or 717-371-1417.
