Food, Farming, And Family Fun At The Fair Elizabethtown Tradition To Kick Off On Aug. 20 By Chelsea Peifer
Hummelstown resident Rachael Cassel joined 4-H as a freshman in high school and was part of the Lower Dauphin Livestock Club, which gave her the chance to show livestock at the Elizabethtown Fair. Showing pigs, dairy cattle, and beef cattle at the Elizabethtown Fair make up some of her favorite 4-H memories. “I grew up on a small farm, so I naturally gravitated toward the livestock club, said Cassel. Going from a commercial standpoint as far as what is acceptable when selling an animal to learning what is acceptable in the show ring at the fair was a bit of an adjustment as she put meticulous effort into making sure each animal was
cleaned, fitted appropriately, and ready to - hopefully - wow the judges. “There’s a lot more that goes into it than someone might think, noted Cassel. “It’s been challenging, but I like being able to improve. It’s amazing what one individual - especially with some of the little kids - can accomplish with the animals. Training at 4-H and receiving encouragement from those around her helped Cassel to thrive each year at the Elizabethtown Fair. Now 20, Cassel has aged out of 4-H membership but remains involved in the organization by serving as a trained volunteer. Sale night, which occurs midweek at the Elizabethtown Fair, is one of Cassel’s favorite parts of the event as individuals and businesses come out to bid on the animals raised by the youths. This year’s Sale of Champions auction is See Elizabethtown Fair pg 6
Rachael Cassel, shown with her steer, Solomon, has been involved in showing and judging livestock at the Elizabethtown Fair for six years. The 45th annual Elizabethtown Fair will be held from Aug. 20 to 25 at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds.

MERCHANDISER - Elizabethtown Edition -
Word Of Life Chapel from pg 1 Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz (right) is one of the players featured in “The Faith Playbook,” which will be shown free of charge at Word of Life Chapel in Bainbridge on Aug. 19. Life Chapel, and youth leader Chad White were part of the audience at the live interview hosted by pastor and author Dr. Paul David Tripp on May 4 at Calvary Chapel in Philadelphia. “This whole thing about the team’s spiritual journey was in Tripp’s mind even before they won the (big game),” said Dilworth. Once the team achieved the monumental win, Tripp followed through with the idea to interview the players about learning to live by faith in both victory and defeat. On Sunday, Aug. 19, the community is invited to a viewing of “The Faith Playbook” at Word of Life Chapel, 139 Wickersham Road, Bainbridge, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free. A brief discussion will take place after the movie, and light refreshments including Philadelphia-style soft pretzels - will be served. In addition to Wentz, Tripp interviews Nick Foles, Trey Burton, Chris Maragos, Jordan Hicks, Stefen Wisniewski, Jordan
Matthews, and Scott Hanson in “The Faith Playbook.” Plus, former Eagles kicker David Akers shares briefly about sponsoring children through Compassion International. A movie trailer is available to view at http://thefaithplaybook.com. A 60-minute segment of the movie will be shown; however, its full length is three hours. Since the church secured a streaming license to show “The Faith Playbook,” Dilworth said they are also planning two home showings in September, and one of those might include the full three hours of the film. Dates and locations for the home viewings are still in the works and will likely be announced at the Aug. 19 event. Dilworth emphasized that anyone is welcome - regardless of what football team they may support - and that the event is designed for anyone who would like to hear a refreshing and challenging message about the things that really
Children’s Playroom from pg 1 up for a fourth year at Children’s Playroom this fall. “It gives you so many tools to use with kids this age,” said Mandy, adding that the setting fosters a natural “village” of support. “Everybody is going through the same stuff or will be at some point.” According to executive director Vicki Dolan, Children’s Playroom’s main function is as a parenting support group that exists to let people know that there are others who are going through the same parenting difficulties and that they are not alone. “It’s about parenting with a purpose and making each child feel a sense of belonging and significance and that they are capable,” Dolan shared. Parents and young children - from birth through age 6 - are welcome to register to attend Children’s Playroom once a week at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Sessions are offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and continuing through May. Space is limited. There is a fee to attend, but scholarships are available. To sign up, interested individuals may visit www.childrensplayroom.org.
In addition to morning sessions, Children’s Playroom offers a single moms’ parenting program every other Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner is provided, and the group follows the same format, with playtime together followed by a time where parents split off for discussion while the children have supervised activities in another room. Children’s Playroom was the first place Mandy had ever left her oldest child in the care of someone who was not a family member, and she said the staff did a great job of helping to ease his separation anxiety. “It was so comforting to know he was with people who loved and cared for him and had the same parenting philosophies as we do,” recalled Mandy. Brian and Mandy’s children look forward to attending Children’s Playroom, where they not only get to play with new toys but also make a craft, have a snack, and interact with friends. “You’re always in the next room too,” mentioned Jo Hershey, who has attended Children’s Playroom for two years with her daughters. Learning new concepts at Children’s Playroom to apply in the day to day of life has given Hershey fresh perspective. “Sometimes you get tunnel vision, and it provides you with different
matter when the game is over and fans have all gone home. “Things like encouraging one another, building up one another, praying for one another, and giving glory to the One Who deserves it,” said Dilworth. “And people can ask questions in a nonthreatening environment.” According to Dilworth, compelling testimonies from the football players will be featured along with biblical teaching and discussion among the teammates on topics such as valuing salvation over anything else in life, living like a relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important thing, committing to being a lifelong student of the Word of God, becoming an active participant in a local church, viewing all of life as ministry and ministry as life, being ready and willing to suffer for Christ’s sake, and living every day with eternity in view. Word of Life Chapel also sponsored a trip to Citizens Bank Park on June 1 to watch as Eagles players competed - defense versus offense - in a softball game to raise funds for The Carson Wentz Audience of One (AO1) Foundation. Wentz founded the organization in 2017 to “uplift individuals and communities around the world by demonstrating God’s love for His people,” according to https://ao1foundation.org. Plans are already in place to take a group to next year’s benefit softball game as well, and area residents are welcome to join in. Readers with questions about any of the events may contact Dilworth at 717-4137817, pastor Mark Habecker at 717-2055335, or the church office at 717-426-1171.

tools you may not know of,” said Hershey. Hershey pointed out that having discussion with other parents who are in a similar stage of life is a great way to gather ideas and solutions and share both struggles and encouragement. “You all talk about it with unbiased advice,” said Brian. Some meetings include interactive sharing times while others feature guest speakers. A variety of relevant parenting topics are covered, such as positive discipline, child development, toilet training, bedtime routines, stress management, and relationship building. The idea that there is a reason behind a behavior is one of the fundamentals that has stuck for Mandy. “They’re not doing what they’re doing to bother you, there’s a reason for every behavior,” explained Mandy. “(Children’s Playroom) gives you so many tools to use with kids this age.” “I always want parents to realize there’s another way besides yelling at their child,” Dolan chimed in. “Children’s Playroom gives a safe haven for parents to come and open up with each other. Many families come back. Every year is a different season, so you need different tools.” Readers with questions may call 717-945-9348 or email childrens playroom14@gmail.com. ©2018 ©20 ©2018 20 RITA RITA’S T ’SS FRANCH FRANCHI ANCH SEE COMPANY COMPANY MPANY. set to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22. “That’s when you get to see how much goes into the project from start to finish. You can’t show an animal without the help of a lot of different people. It truly takes a village,” noted Cassel. Aside from all of the exciting events in the livestock arena, Cassel looks forward to the antique tractor display, the rides, and the petting zoo at the fair. Fries smothered in a blend of melted cheese and bacon from a tent manned by local restaurant employees have become one of the foods that Cassel will happily wait in line for every year at the fair. As Cassel works with children and students in 4-H, she encourages them to try different competitions and events at the fair even if they are not sure they will like them. “Some of the things you might not think you’d like could end up being your favorite,” remarked Cassel. For instance, being part of a potato judging committee was something Cassel tried out one year, and she had a great time with the experience. When it comes to showing livestock, her best piece of advice is this: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You might be intimidated by some of the older kids, but
you’ll be surprised how willing people are to help,” Cassel said. “I always felt like the Elizabethtown Fair is a fair of class-act exhibitors. In and out of the showroom, the people always demonstrated prestige. That really made me proud to be a part of (it).” The 45th annual Elizabethtown Fair will kick off on Monday, Aug. 20, and continue through Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The fairgrounds will be open to the public from 5 to 11 p.m. on Aug. 20 and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21, to Aug. 25. Admission is free; however, there is a fee for parking. Opening-day festivities will include the fair queen competition, beginning at 6 p.m. on the Kiwanis Stage. Musical duo Dan and Galla will once again serve as the masters of ceremonies. This year’s fair queen contestants include Kayla Azaroff, Nora Briggs, Amanda Ellenberger, Taylor Halbleib, and Madison Shaw. For more details, including a complete schedule of competitions, entertainment, and other attractions, readers may visit www.etownfair.org.

God’s Clothing Closet from pg 1 “It’s a huge event, and it’s a lot of fun.” That is how organizer Kris Gray succinctly described God’s Clothing Closet, an annual clothing giveaway held at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, held just in time for the dawning of a new school year. “We have people who come because they want something new and some people who are in desperate need of something,” shared Gray. The community is invited to shop for free quality used clothing, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and children in all sizes and for all seasons at this year’s event on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 8 to 11 a.m. Clothing is organized by size and displayed on clothing racks or tables for ease of shopping. The facility is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible, and it has plenty of parking. On-site child care will be offered while parents shop. In addition to clothing, free Bibles and devotional materials will be on
Your
hand for adults and children. A limited number of quilts handmade by Ruhl’s church members will also be available for new mothers. Once folks are finished shopping, they are welcome to relax and enjoy musical entertainment, light refreshments, and a game room in an area separate from the clothing setup. Gray noted that donations of nonperishable food or toiletries for the Manheim Central Food Pantry are encouraged but not required. Currently, items needed for the food pantry include canned fruit, canned meat and soups, peanut butter, strawberry jelly, cereal, and boxed potatoes. Last year, God’s Clothing Closet welcomed 465 shoppers - most of whom arrived in the first hour, Gray said. “The line of shoppers before we opened the doors stretched to the Prayer Garden, and some of those shoppers arrived before 5:30 a.m.,” recounted Gray. “Several shoppers who attend every year took the time to stop and thank us for this needed ministry and how it per-
sonally blessed them.” In addition to giving away clothing, approximately 220 Bibles and 37 handmade comforters were distributed to guests at the 2017 event. Five large boxes of nonperishable food donated by shoppers were given to the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Any items left over at the event’s end will be donated to Community Aid. Collecting clothing, shoes, and accessories for the next God’s Clothing Closet is a yearlong process, and donations of quality used items are welcome at any time. For more details on making a donation or about God’s Clothing Closet, readers may call the church at 717-665-3400.

gently used quilts in a wide range of sizes. There will also be opportunities to win a 2018 Ford Mustang Coupe and $2,000 or $1,000 Visa gift cards. Folks who are hungry during the Labor Day Auction are invited to join the Auction Club, which is designed for anyone who loves Amish-made food, enjoys access to an all-you-can-eat array of hot and cold sweets and savories, and wants to support medical, emotional, and spiritual end-of-life care and grief support. Folks may join the Auction Club for a set fee; membership offers access to all-you-caneat food on both days of the Labor Day Auction and acknowledgment of a donation in the auction program and Hospice Horizons magazine. To join the club or to view an auction schedule, readers may call 717-295-3900 or visit www.LaborDayAuction.org. Hospice & Community Care has been partnering with local businesses, individuals, the Amish community, and volunteers to grow this successful event over the past 34 years. All proceeds from the Labor Day Auction directly benefit patients and families receiving hospice and palliative care and bereavement support through the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. For more information, readers may call the aforementioned number, visit www. hospicecommunity.org, or email info@hospicecommunity.org. Pictured on front: The

Then and now, postcards are a snapshot - sometimes literally - of everyday life. “They are windows of the past,” said Lancaster County Postcard Club charter member Jere Greider. “I’ve learned more history from postcards than (I did) in school,” added Dede Schaeffer, who is also a charter member of the club, which was formed in 1990 at the behest of Jim Ward and Charlie Griffiths. Postcards were initially developed in the 1800s, and they were a highlight of the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. Initially, they consisted of an image on the front and a space to write the address on the back. In 1907, the divided back was introduced. “Until then, they couldn’t write more than the address on the back, so often they wrote (in small letters) around the border on the front,” Greider explained. Postcards from that time period still exist, as do others produced in the years since. Uncountable postcards will be displayed and available for purchase at the 26th annual Postcard Exposition that the Lancaster County Postcard Club will host on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. A total of 25 dealers from five states are slated to offer postcards with the themes of advertising, holidays, real photos, town views, and more. Prices typically range from a quarter to hundreds of dollars. Additionally, club members will exhibit boards displaying groups of cards in the subjects of Pennsylvania views, transportation, advertising, and real photos pre-1950. “You can look at the boards and get an idea of what (the subject) is all about,” Greider remarked. The expo is popular among postcard collectors, and a line usually forms at the door before the venue opens. The club also welcomes individuals who are new to the hobby. “People come in who’ve inherited cards and don’t know what to do with them,” Schaeffer related. Postcards were a form of communication heavily used before telephones became standard in homes. Recipients tended to collect the missives in albums. “(Households) had their family Bible, a photo album, and a postcard album,” Schaeffer said. “They’d sit down and look through the albums on Saturday nights.” Both the images on the front and the text on the reverse of postcards tell stories. Schaeffer noted that club members have discovered cards bearing the signatures of famous folks, and she has personally rubbed shoulders with notable individuals who collect postcards. For club member Susan Glass, an interest in her hometown introduced
her to deltiology - the word for the study and collection of postcards. “A lot of people look for views of their hometown,” Glass commented. “Once you get hooked, then you find something else to collect.” The Lancaster County Postcard Club welcomes new members, and guests may attend club meetings free of charge. A small fee will be charged for admission to the Postcard Expo. A 4-H group will sell hot and cold food and beverages. Gift certificates to be used toward the purchase of postcards at the expo will be awarded in door prize drawings throughout the day. For more information about the club or the Postcard Exposition, readers may contact Greider at 717-413-6882 or jereg@ earthlink.net.

Hospice & Community Care’s 34th annual Labor Day Auction will be held at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 101 Park Ave., Quarryville, on Saturday, Sept. 1, and Monday, Sept. 3, beginning each day at 7:30 a.m. with Amish-made food, specialty auctions, and packed schedules. The Labor Day Auction is free to attend, with proceeds from winning bids and food sales benefiting patients and families receiving hospice and palliative care and bereavement support. The two-day event will feature new and used items up for bids, a furniture auction, an array of gift certificates and gift baskets, and five specialty auctions. The specialty auctions on Sept. 1 will feature plants, artwork, and days of care. Through the auction for days of care, folks will be able to contribute directly to patient care. On average, a day of hospice care for one patient costs $186. Auction bidders may “buy” one or more days of care. The art auction will offer original paintings from local artists as well as the debut of the 2018 Memorial Garden Ornament. Gardeners will love the plant auction, which will continue on Sept. 3 in order to accommodate the six truckloads of plants donated to the fundraiser. A high-end auction on Sept. 3 will focus on vacations, fine jewelry, handyman services, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and handcrafted items. Additional auctions that day will include sports items and quilts. The sports memorabilia auction will showcase items from regional, state, and national icons with guest auctioneer and SportsTalk host Eric May. The specialty quilt auction will offer handquilted pieces from Amish crafters, quilters’ groups, and volunteers, as well as
