Old Trolley Line Park Will Celebrate Grand Opening BY CATHY MOLITORIS
he supervisors of Mount Joy Township will host a grand opening ceremony for Old Trolley Line Park on Saturday, Sept. 18, but Parks and Recreation Board chair Karen Boyer said “ceremony” doesn’t really sum up the event. “It’s not just a ceremony, but it’s really a celebration of the park being ready for the community to use,” Boyer explained. “This park is here to meet the needs of the community and to add opportunities for recreation. The population of this area is growing, and people are looking for places to go to get outdoors and have fun.” The grand opening will mark the completion of the first two phases of a four-phase renovation of the park, located at 475 Beverly Road, Elizabethtown. Phase one included two ballfields, a multipurpose field and paved walking paths. Phase two, which is nearing completion, includes a pavilion, a tot lot playground and youth playground, picnic tables and benches.
T
“There are paved paths through the park for all mobility levels,” Boyer noted. “There’s over a halfmile of trail around the park. This park has something for all ages.” The trailhead of the Conewago Recreation Trail is also accessible from the parking lot, which includes access and parking for horses and trailers as well. The festivities on Sept. 18 will begin with a Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary show from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by a grand opening ceremony. The Elizabethtown Boys Club will run baseball clinics from 12:15 to 1 p.m. Middle Creek Search and Rescue will provide a demonstration at 1 p.m. A BMX bike giveaway drawing will be held at 1:30 p.m. A Northwest Regional Police Department K-9 demonstration will be held at 1:40 p.m. Additional participating organizations will include Northwest EMS, Elizabethtown Fire Department and Walters Servcies, featuring its mascot, Walter. Food trucks will be on site as well, including Jordon Irvin, Scoops Ice Cream & Grille and Fuego Latino. See Park pg 3
Celebrating The Community
Showcasing one of the new playgrounds at Old Trolley Line Park are Justin Evans (from left), Karen Boyer, John Felix and Pat Bailey.
An American Tradition The 2021 Elizabethtown Fair kicked off on Aug. 23 with the fair queen coronation. The fair queen court comprised Gene Smith (left), Abigail O’Shell and Emma Musser. Musser was crowned queen and O’Shell was named alternate. The fair continued all week, with exhibits and competitions, games, rides, food and live music. For additional coverage of the fair, look inside this edition of the Merchandiser. Visit www.townlively .com/in-the-community to see more photos.
Last year, Rheems Fire Department marked its 100th anniversary. A celebration was planned, but the pandemic put that on hold. Now it’s happening as the department turns 101. Rheems Community Day and 9/11 Memorial will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the fire department, 350 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown. “We wanted to have a great big to-do for our centennial last year,” said Lesa Stanford, event coordinator. “When we started planning

Faith Driven Movements To Visit Lancaster County
You can make a
DIFFERENCE
in our community
For many in our community, taxes can feel like a burden. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) volunteers work to help lift that burden by offering low income families free tax preparation. Tax refunds give these families a springboard for the future by putting their hard-earned money back into their hands. It's a simple way to help in your community.
BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Want to volunteer with VITA? We need volunteers like you! Contact smethers@uwlanc.org for more details and to sign up for an Informational Session in September or October.
“Volunteering with VITA is a great way to help people save money and not be worried about the process.” -Lenny, VITA Volunteer
WHY VOLUNTEER WITH VITA?
1. MAKE AN IMPACT
VITA volunteers directly affect the community in tangible ways. Clients saved over $3 million in tax preparation fees in 2020. As a volunteer tax preparer, you can help families get their tax refunds, which helps build financial stability.
2. FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE With day, evening, and weekend hours at more than 20 locations across the county, you have the opportunity to help as your schedule allows. Plus, tax season isn't year-round, so you get to enjoy your summers.
3. LEARN A NEW SKILL No experience is necessary. As a volunteer, you have the chance to try you hand at a new skill. VITA will spend time preparing you to become certified in tax preparation through free online and classroom training.
4. GET TO KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY Once you're certified, you will work side by side with Lancaster County residents to prepare their tax returns. Our goal is to provide services for 11,200 residents this year. It's a great way to meet your neighbors and strengthen your community, and make an immediate difference.

Well, it won’t exactly be a visit, but there will be a virtual watch party. On Wednesday, Sept. 8, and Thursday, Sept. 9, Christian Business Fellowship and Mission Church will co-host a watch party for Faith Driven Movements’ two virtual conferences: “Faith Driven Entrepreneur Live” and “Faith Driven Inventors.” The mission of Faith Driven Movements is to inspire, educate, and mobilize people to use their time, talents, and other resources in the marketplace. Faith Driven Movements brings together leaders from around the world who seek to make a financial, social, environmental, and spiritual impact through their business ventures. Last year, Faith Driven Movements held its first global, virtual conference. The first day was catered to entrepreneurs and the second to investors. The same two-day format will be used this year. Watch parties in Lancaster County for Faith Driven Movements’ two virtual conferences will be held at Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. On both Sept. 8 and Sept. 9, registration will open at 11 a.m. and the event will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided both days, and the conference will conclude at 5 p.m.

this event, we decided to make it a community day so we could invite the whole community out.” Admission to the event is free. The festivities will include games and activities provided by local businesses and nonprofit groups as well as food trucks including Piper Belle’s BBQ, Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, Fuego Latino and Auntie Anne’s. Live music will be performed by RICK K. Road Trip from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will conclude with fireworks beginning at approximately 9:15 p.m. The celebration will also include a memorial service marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. “We’ll be doing a short, 15-minute candlelight service,” Stanford stated. “It’s a way to remember all those who lost their
lives that day.” The service is set to happen after the band’s performance and before the fireworks. Stanford noted that the event offers a way for people to socialize with friends while also supporting local businesses and enjoying time together as a community. “This past year, with everybody being homebound, we’re excited to offer an opportunity for people to get back together,” she remarked. “I would encourage people to come out, talk to their neighbors and celebrate our community. It’s going to be a nice event and a great time for everyone to get together.” For more information on the Community Day and 9/11 Memorial, search for “Rheems Fire Department” on Facebook or visit www.rheemsfire.com.

round park. There will even be opportunities for crosscountry skiing in the winter.” The grand opening will be held rain or shine. For more information or updates, visit www.mtjoytwp.org.

“The price to attend is kept very reasonable,” said Jeff Hostetter, member of Mission Church and Christian Business Fellowship. “People can come to one day or they get a combo ticket to attend both.” There will be 31 virtual speakers at “Faith Driven Entrepreneur Live” and 33 at “Faith Driven Inventors Live.” Among them will be Tim Keller, Cathie Wood, and Donald Miller. Keller is the founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, chairman of Redeemer City to City, founder of The Gospel Coalition, and author of “The Reason for God.” Wood is a star stock-picker and founder of ARK Invest, which invests in innovations like self-driving cars and genomics. Miller is the CEO of StoryBrand and author of “Building a StoryBrand,” “Blue Like Jazz,” and more. “This is a great way to gather, feel connected, meet someone new, and build relationships,” stated Hostetter. “In addition to the relationships, the teaching will be really high-quality. There will be stories of impact woven into the time together, and they will be very powerful and impactful.” Faith Driven Movements recently published its first book, and all attendees of the global, virtual conference will receive a free copy. August 23-28, 2021 There’s no place like the Elizabethtown Fair. That’s the message the fair queen candidates gave in their speeches during the competition on the first day of the fair, Aug. 23. Contestants spoke on the topic, “Why You Should Come to My Fair,” and their answers reflected everything that makes the fair unique – the food, the animals, the rides, the games and more. The 48th annual Elizabethtown Fair continued through Aug. 28, and the high heat and humidity did not deter the crowds who came to experience “An American Tradition.” The fair marked the official start of fair season in Lancaster County. The fair queen scholarship competition took place on the Kiwanis Stage, with master of ceremonies Galla, of husband-and-wife musical duo Dan & Galla. Candidates were Emma Musser, Gene Smith and Abigail O’Shell. Emma was chosen as fair queen, with Abigail selected as fair queen alternate. Emma is the daughter of Greg and Jodi Musser of Mount Joy. She has exhibited steers, pigs, sheep and goats at the fair. A 2020 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School, she was active in the school’s FFA chapter and was the 2020-21 state chaplain on the Pennsylvania FFA state officer team. She has also been involved in Lancaster County 4-H clubs. She plans to attend Penn State
University to major in agricultural sciences. She received a $1,000 scholarship. Abigail is the daughter of James and Christine O’Shell. A resident of Hummelstown, she graduated from the veterinary assistant program of Dauphin County Technical School in 2020. She is a sophomore at Penn State University, where she is studying animal science. She has exhibited at the fair since 2014. She received a $500 scholarship. Gene is the daughter of Jonathan and Jessica Smith. She is a member of the Elizabethtown Area High School Class of 2023 and performs with the school’s color guard. She enjoys art and loves to draw. After graduation, she hopes to become an animator. Emma received her crown from Addison Neff, the 2020 fair queen. Addison, the daughter of Dale and Janell Neff, is also the 2021 Pennsylvania state fair queen, having earned the title earlier this year. As such, she represents the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs. Live entertainment at the fair included the Taylor Zeager Band, the Jess Zimmerman Band, juggler Chris Ivey, the Josh Squared Band, the Fabulous Greaseband and more. Jeff Krick Jr. performed an Elvis tribute, the Fighting Dragons showcased martial arts and
comedy hypnotist Mike Bishop entertained. On Aug. 25, as part of Senior Citizens’ Day, the winners of the 2021 Elizabethtown Fair senior king and queen were announced. Clark Merrifield of Elizabethtown was named king and Mildred English of Frenchville was chosen as queen. As always, agriculture was in the spotlight at the fair. Displays of farming equipment were showcased along with animals, including pigs, sheep, goats and rabbits. Inside the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, competitive exhibit entries were displayed, including flowers, baked goods, ornaments, photography, artwork and needlecraft. A variety of contests were held throughout the week for both children and adults. Winners of various competitions include: LIVESTOCK COMPETITIONS Beef Competition winners included Natalie Musser, Supreme Champion Steer and Reserve Showman (ages 16 to 18); Caleb Miller, Reserve Champion Steer, Non-Sale Champion and Champion Showman (ages 16 to 18); Cohen Miller, NonSale Reserve Champion and Champion Showman (ages 13 to 15); Kayden Youndt, Champion Showman (ages 9 to 12); Waylon Kready, Champion Showman (age 8); Faith Musser, Reserve Show-

In Memoriam
MARK TYSON MUMMAU 1938-2021
Mark Tyson Mummau, age 83, passed away August 19, 2021, at Robin Crest Farm in Amherst, Virginia following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born May 22, 1938, in Lebanon County Pennsylvania and grew up in Lancaster and Dauphin Counties. He was the eldest son of Paul and Minnie Tyson Mummau of Elizabethtown, PA who predeceased him. He spent his entire life working in the field of agriculture and took pride in the fact that he never worked for a W-2 after the age of 20. He owned and operated several dairy, beef, and crop farms, most notably Jaquelin Hall Farm in Somerset, VA and was a member of numerous agricultural organizations. He continued to have beef cattle at Robin Crest Farm until his death. In addition to farming, he founded Token, Inc. and worked as an independent contractor for several agricultural firms as a salesman of seed corn, plant nutrients, and agricultural herbicides and pesticides, and later assisted Ownby Auction Company with numerous farm auctions. At the age of 75, he authored a book of his memoirs and continued to be a regular at the Lynchburg and Spring Lake Livestock Auctions as his health would permit. He was a founding member of Somerset Christian Church and most recently a member of Temple Baptist Church in Madison Heights, VA. He is survived by his wife Catherine Mawyer Tinder Mummau of Amherst, children, Clifford (Neth Obispo) of Amherst, Chester (Priscilla) of Spotsylvania, Crystal Nulty (Jim) of Raleigh, NC, and Curtis (Bernardine Cde Baca) of Mechanicsville. Step-daughter, Christine Tinder Rohm of Charlottesville, stepsons, Benton G. “BG”
Tinder III of Faber, and Howard Carlisle “Carl” Tinder, Sr. (Lacy) of Earlysville. Mark is also survived by a sister, Thelma Mummau, and brothers, Glenn, Paul (Barb), George, Lawrence (Evelyn), David (Millie) all of who reside in PA, sister-in-law, Rebecca Mummau of Riner, VA, brother-in-law, Joseph Nyakema of Tanzania, and Faye Harris, a special cousin, of Jefferson, NY. He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Velma Moyer (John), sister, Jeanette Nyakema, and a brother Kenneth Mummau. He is also survived by two sisters-in law, Priscilla Mawyer of Lovingston and Nancy Sapp (Chuck) of Cherry Hill, NJ and leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Catherine Mummau for her devotion, patience, and care-giving in his final years, Dave Hochstein, Eric & Ginny Robb, Trey Gainey, and numerous other neighbors for their assistance with the farm for the past decade, and the numerous neighbors, doctors, nurses, EMT’s, and therapists who provided care. A special thank you to the Centra Hospice of Lynchburg staff for their assistance in the final weeks. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at 11 AM, at Temple Baptist Church, 4465 South Amherst Hwy., Madison Heights, VA 24533 with Rev. Steve Esterline officiating. The family welcomes family and friends for visitation one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in the Amherst Cemetery, 105 Grandview Drive, Amherst, VA 24521, after which a meal will be served at the Clifford Ruritan Clubhouse, 755 Fletchers Level Rd, Amherst, VA 24521. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Wells Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston and online condolences can be posted on their Facebook page or mailed to Catherine Mummau at PO Box 96, Clifford, VA 24533. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in his name to Temple Baptist Church, the American Parkinson Disease Association, PO Box 97216, Washington, D.C. 20090, the Post Oak Education & Charitable Foundation, Inc. at PO Box 752, Locust Grove, VA 22508, or a charity of your choice.
