Old-Fashioned Fun In Bainbridge

“Parking is free, entry is free, the hayrides are free and the entertainment is free ... There is so much to see and do.” Will Smith, whose great-greatgrandfather was a blacksmith, will provide the blacksmithing demonstrations. “This town is incredibly lucky to have a building like this,” Smith said. Williams noted that the township supervisors hope to continue to use the blacksmith building for school group visits and other special events. Additional activities at the Field Days event will include hayrides to a pumpkin patch, barrel train rides for children, crafters, vendors and lots of food. A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held on Saturday.

“All throughout the event, we’re going to have bluegrass music, and we have at least a dozen food stands,” Williams remarked. “They are run by local nonprofit groups like churches, the Boy Scouts and the Lions Club.” Apple cider pressed on site will also be available. The theme for this year’s event is “Tobacco and Antique Household Items,” Williams said. Antique hitand-miss engines, tractors and farm machinery will be on display, and a roof shingle-making machine will provide demonstrations. “We will also have a Civil War reenactment camp and a Revolutionary War re-enactment camp,” Williams stated. Proceeds from the Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days will be used to fund next year’s event, Williams explained, adding that money will be raised through donations at the event as well as the auction. He encouraged everyone to come out for a fun day that celebrates the town’s history. “Parking is free, entry is free, the hayrides are free and the entertainment is free,” he stated. “There is so much to see and do.” For more information, search for “Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook.

Echo Valley Art Auction Will Showcase Local Works BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Members of the Echo Valley Art Group have a passion for their craft, but they also have a problem. Years of creating art has created an overabundance of artwork and limited storage space. To remedy the issue, the members host an annual art auction not only to clean out their studios, but also to provide the public with access to affordable, quality art. This year’s Echo Valley

“This is a heritage days event to celebrate the township and its history,” said Jeff Williams, describing the Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days. The 23rd annual event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18 and 19, at Conoy Township Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. Saturday’s festivities will begin at 9 a.m. and will include a tractor parade at 11 a.m. and a benefit auction at 2 p.m. Sunday’s event will begin with breakfast served from 7 to 9 a.m. by the Conoy Lions Club, followed by a church service at 9 a.m. “All of the township churches have a community service, which will run until 10 a.m.,” Williams stated. Sunday’s tractor parade will begin at noon. A highlight of this year’s event will be hayrides to a blacksmith shop in Bainbridge, where a blacksmith dressed in period clothing will provide demonstrations. The shop, located at 15 S. Second St., had been privately owned when it went up for sale in 2019. “The Bainbridge Township supervisors decided to buy it and save it for future generations to enjoy,” Williams

explained, noting that the building dates to 1810 and is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Bainbridge. “The township wanted to be good stewards of our history. What a rare gem we have in our little town, and we wanted to let a new generation see it and appreciate it.”

Owen Wolfe lives and breathes baseball. When the pandemic put a hold on live games, the Elizabethtown Area Middle School student turned to the virtual baseball lessons of James Lowe, known by his Instagram handle and YouTube name, Coach Ballgame. “The positive, encouraging instructions helped sharpen his skills at a time he couldn’t be out on the field,” said Owen’s father, Jeremy. Owen was inspired by Coach Ballgame’s message of giving back, so with his father, Owen created the Atta Boy Baseball Fund, giving a nod to one of Coach Ballgame’s

coached Owen, now 12, since he was 7 years old. “Kids have a (slim chance) of being drafted (to play professional ball), but they have a 100% chance of carrying over what they’re taught in the game of baseball,” Jeremy explained. “Baseball teaches respect, honor, discipline, courage and, most importantly, failure. … The first thing I teach my kids is I don’t chase the trophy. I focus on the relationships they’re going to form, the memories they’re going to make and the character they’re going to build through baseball.” Jeremy and Owen are still raising money through their GoFundMe page and plan to use some of the funds to bring Coach Ballgame back next year and hold additional free pickup sandlot games for kids. While bringing Coach Ballgame to Elizabethtown was a highlight for the Wolfes this summer, Jeremy said spending time with his son meant even more. “This experience has been just as good for me as it was for him,” he noted. “The opportunity to meet Coach Ballgame in person was great, and the opportunity to show kids that it’s OK to have fun with baseball without all the pressure to perform was even better.” To donate to the Atta Boy Baseball Fund, visit www.gofundme .com/f/atta-boy-baseball-fund.

catchphrases. Owen hoped to raise funds to send 25 kids to baseball camp who otherwise wouldn’t have the means to participate. “Owen and I talked, and he said, ‘Why don’t we help some kids around here?’” said Jeremy. “Growing up, baseball meant a lot to me, and I know there are a lot of kids out there who need equipment and camp fees to be able to take part in a game.” The pair’s fundraising efforts caught the attention of Coach Ballgame, and in August, Lowe made a stop in Elizabethtown on a cross-country tour that featured appearances in major cities, including Los Angeles, St. Louis and Chicago. He ran a free sandlot baseball camp for boys and girls and got to meet Owen in person. At the sandlot game, 70 children ages 6 through 12 turned out to meet Coach Ballgame and play baseball in a fun and relaxed environment. “It was really well received,” Jeremy said of the visit. “So many parents thanked us and said their kids had a really hard time getting out on the baseball field because of fear or anxiety, and this opened a door to them.” Along with baseball, Coach Ballgame teaches life lessons and emphasizes that baseball should be fun above all else. That’s a message Jeremy tries to impart to Owen and his teammates as well. Jeremy has

Since 1962, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation (LPAF) has aimed to enrich the quality of life in Lancaster County by providing cultural programming at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. LPAF accomplishes this goal through its Summer Music Series and Labor Day weekend Art Festival. To thank the community and offer another opportunity to enjoy live entertainment outside, LPAF will host a one-time Day of Music event on Saturday, Sept. 18. It will take place at Long’s Park and will feature both national and local acts. The venue will open at 2 p.m., and performances will begin at about 2:45 p.m. Performers will include national acts Shannon McNally, The National Reserve, and Big Sam’s Funky Nation, as well as local musicians The Wild Hymns, Tractor Jerry & The Mud Bucket, and Tuck Ryan Band. These artists will introduce the public to a

diverse array of musical genres, including soul, funk, country, and Americana. David Wauls, president of LPAF, noted that the event will give people a chance to hear familiar performers and to get acquainted with ones they hadn’t previously heard of. “Long’s Park has such a long standing tradition with providing qualified, curated, live entertainment for the community,” said Day of Music Chair Tony Kirchner. “What I’m probably most excited about is the idea of constant flow of music featuring national artists but also some regional artists as well. The goal was to stretch through genres, stretch through boundaries, but also stay true to ... what Long’s Park traditionally programs.” Day of Music will be a free event, but donations are encouraged. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on-site, and a beer garden facilitated by the owners of Trio Bar and Grill and the Queen Street Bistro - which plans to open in late September - will

offer adult beverages. “To be there, feel that energy, and get that whole sensory experience of being at a totally live event is a whole different experience than taking it in remotely or on your television,” said Kirchner. “This is something going on in your backyard, so

take advantage of it!” Wauls mentioned that this event is made possible through the support of sponsors and donors and by revenue generated by the annual Labor Day Weekend Art Festival. For more information, visit www.longspark.org/dayofmusic.

Art from pg 1 Along with the auction, the event will feature live music and a free children’s art project from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for those ages 6 to 12. “Susan Ulrich, the new high school art teacher at Lancaster Catholic High School, will be working with the kids on the project,” Shane said, noting that the project will keep children occupied while parents browse the artwork. The event will also include food for purchase. Echo Valley is a group of professional artists who meet regularly and exhibit art together, Shane said. “We currently have 23 members, and our membership is limited to 25,” she stated. “We have a wide range of artists in our group. Our youngest member is in her 20s, and our oldest is in his 90s.” Members include Ann DeLaurentis, Rob Evans,

Becky Blosser, Dick Whitson, Brant Schuller and Susan Gottlieb. The group holds the auction not only to get art into the hands of more people, but also to support young artists in the county. Proceeds will support local youth art exhibits and will fund events such as bus trips to major museums for local students. Shane said the event is a

casual, low-key way to enjoy art. “There’s no pressure,” she explained. “You can just come to look around, eat lunch and talk with the artists. We love talking to people about our art.” The event is also a way to showcase original art that’s affordable, she said, adding, “ We started this event because we believe as artists that original art enhances your life and makes your life better.” For more information on the Echo Valley Art Group Art Auction, visit www.echovalley artgroup.com.

Art Group Art Auction will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Rader Park, 1899 Apostle Way, Lancaster. The grounds will open at noon for browsing, and the auction will begin at 1 p.m. “The auction is a fun, relaxed event,” said Carol Toner Shane, an artist with Echo Valley. “It’s a nice afternoon to enjoy art in a beautiful setting.” Hundreds of works by 20 artists will be up for auction at the event. Artists will be on site with their art, and Shane encourages attendees to talk to them about their work. “Every item will be marked with a minimum bid, and a lot of the art goes for the minimum bid,” Shane explained. “Some gets hyped up and there’s a lot of competition between bidders, so that’s always fun, too.”

ET Field Hockey Tops Middletown, Ties Hempfield

BY ERIC PYLES

If you look at your calendar and see September, it can only mean one thing...the return of high school sports!! For the Elizabethtown field hockey team, that return meant a busy opening weekend to the 2021 season. The Lady Bears kicked things off with a 12-0 romp over Middletown on Friday the 3rd. Mikaela Condran did the heavy lifting, collecting half of the team’s tally while Caitlin Steffie and Piper Patrick chipped in with two scores each. Alaina Telenko and Sydney Pope shared the win but faced no shots in recording the shutout. Elizabethtown had no time to enjoy the season opening victory as they were back at it one day later, battling Hempfield to a 1-1 tie. Telenko went solo to secure the Saturday tie while Condran picked up the lone score. FOOTBALL The E-town football team has season openers down to a science.

The Bears have captured six straight opening night contests with five of the six coming over their backyard neighbor, Donegal. That includes this year’s opener, a 14-7 victory on August 27th. The Bears used a Josh Rudy to Brock Belmont connection for their first visit to paydirt while Hayden Haver secured the win with his three-yard burst in the fourth. One-week later Elizabethtown found themselves on the opposite end of a 14-7 final, falling in overtime to Mechanicsburg. The Bears lone score came in the opening stanza when Rudy hit Braden Cummings for a 31-yard strike. The Wildcats tied the game in the fourth on a blocked field goal returned for a score before winning in OT. VOLLEYBALL With just one game under their belt the E-town girls volleyball team sits in a four-way logjam atop the Section Two standings. A 3-0 win over Manheim Central on the 7th put the Lady Bears in a first-place tie

beside Ephrata, Lampeter-Strasburg and Solanco. Sydney Stewart picked up eight kills in the 25-13, 25-22 and 25-17 victory while Anna Mowrer dished out 13 assists. TENNIS The girl’s tennis team has come out of the 2021 gate smoking hot, ripping off five straight wins. “I am so proud of these girls,” said head coach Brenda McBride. “The girls we have on the team have worked year-round for several years to develop as players and it is paying dividends,” continued McBride, “Yesterday’s come-from-behind win against Manheim Central was a true test that will help us in the tough matches coming against LS and Donegal. Those matches come with section title implications, and we hope to be ready.” Photo by Mark Palczewski Elizabethtown’s wins have come Hailey Mertz handles the ball for the Bears during their 1-1, over Penn Manor (4-1), Conestoga Lancaster-Lebanon League tie at Hempfield on September 4. Valley (7-0), Lancaster Country Day (5-2), and Ephrata (4-1) coupled with the 4-3 Central win McBride referenced.

CROSS COUNTRY The boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams joined in on the season opening success. Both squads posted wins over Lebanon and Ephrata on September 7th while placing all five scorers inside the top 10. Ali Fink (second) and Jordan DiRisio (third) paced the Lady Bears while Kendall Heim, Julia McAlonis and Jillian Wivell finished things up with a fifth-sixth-seventh place stretch. That led to a 23-38 win over Ephrata and a 15-50 lapping of Lebanon. For the boy’s, it was Nathan Johnson leading the way, matching Fink’s silver for the day. Nathan Gubbins, Jaycen Conrad and Dalton Fink posted their own fifth-sixthseventh place run with Jackson Kay taking the last scoring spot courtesy of ninth place. The Bears posted an identical 23-38 win over Ephrata while topping Lebanon 21-40. GOLF The golf team is all in on the fast start to the 2021 season, so much so that the Bears sit in second place in

Section Two, rocking a 15-4 mark. The hot start includes back-to-back, second place, 4-1 days at Iron Valley on August 19th and at Sunset on August 26th along with a first-place trip around Meadia Heights on September 7th. In between the Bears stumbled a bit in their September 2nd round at Honeybrook, dropping to third as Garden Spot used their home course advantage to move up to second. E-town actually finished that round at Meadia Heights tied with Solanco, 365-365, but claimed a 565-577 victory on the second tiebreaker. A second tiebreak was needed as the fifth scorers for both sides carded a 100. Quinn Dolan secured the win for Elizabethtown with another 100 while Solanco’s Wyatt Landis finished with a 112. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team got in on the action with a 3-2 win over LampeterStrasburg that head coach James

Sostack called “a very open game that was a typical Section 2 barn burner and very physical.” The action on the field backed up Sostack’s comment as his Bears took an early lead when Dax Kelly fed Carlton Wise in the 16th minute. L-S sent the game into intermission deadlocked at 1-1 with an Andrew Reidenbaugh header in the 36th minute. Elizabethtown appeared to grab control with just over 10 minutes remaining but the Jason Stark to Wyatt Rachael score was not enough. Lampeter-Strasburg knotted things up again less than a minute later with Dan Marcroft’s long range bomb. Hayden Flory, with help from Kelly, finished the game up minutes into the OT period. “A tough game for both teams and a great Section 2 match up. Our

“This is a day that’s all about fun, food, entertainment and history,” said Marcus Snow, describing the Pig Iron Fest and Car Show. The event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area, 1467 Long Lane, Columbia. The event will feature a car show, with categories including classic, antique and street rod cars. “We will have 12 trophies in different categories for the winners,” Snow stated, adding that people can register their cars on the day of the event. The Pig Iron Fest will feature crafters, artists, a food court, a kids’ zone, live entertainment and history tours. “Our kids’ zone is always very popular,” Snow remarked. “We’ll have lots of activities,

the pig iron industry, and we’ll be doing tours of a historic farm on the property.” The Pig Iron Fest is a way to honor the history of the region. “This area was very important in the production of pig iron,” Snow explained. “It was ideally situated along the river for easy transport. What is now the Northwest River Trail was once a big industrial zone.” The festival is sponsored by the Donegal Rotary Club, and money raised by the event will be used to preserve local historic sites. Proceeds will also benefit the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank and will be used to support veterans’ organizations, including Glenn Hope Care Farm in Felton. For more information on the Pig Iron Fest and Car Show, contact Snow at marcus @stagesplanning.com or 717-824-0694.

When Handel composed “Messiah” in the 1740s, he wanted it to be performed as a concert, said Tom Berdos, director of music at Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy. With that desire in mind, Berdos is inviting singers in the Mount Joy area to join him for a performance of the piece in December. Rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church, 1215 E. Main St., beginning on Oct. 6. “This is a new and unique opportunity for this community,” said Berdos, who has been conducting “Messiah” for about 20 years at other locations. “I do it for the glory of God, and it gives people the opportunity to sing this wonderful piece of music.” Berdos is looking for all voice parts for the concert, which will be presented with a full orchestra he assembled and will run about 70 minutes. He noted that the church can accommodate up to 90 singers and that people have returned year after year to perform the piece. In 2018, he held the concert in the metro New York area of New Jersey,

and a group from there will Zoom in for rehearsals and perform live at the December concert. Berdos said he does not hold auditions for the performance, but rather leaves it up to people to know their voice part and capabilities. “Some people come to the first or second rehearsal and think, ‘I’m not sure I can do this,’ but I encourage them to keep coming back,” he stated. “It’s a real sense of accomplishment when it all comes together.” The rehearsals are also an opportunity to make friends and connect with others in the community, he noted, adding, “I’ve had singers tell me it’s a life-changing experience to participate. They work so hard as a team, and we really bond.” Berdos emphasized the choir consists of people of all faiths, and it includes a range of ages and backgrounds. “We have at least three teenagers and at least three people who are in their 80s, so it’s a multigenerational experience,” he said. “I would love to have people who were members of their church choir, but maybe

their church doesn’t have a choir anymore.” Berdos has been the music director at Chiques UMC since June, where his wife, Deborah, is the organist. She will accompany rehearsals and sing soprano in the concert. Performing “Messiah” is an opportunity to take on a difficult piece of music, and it’s an expression of faith, Berdos said. “It’s a worship experience to conduct this piece and to sing it,” he remarked. “How can you participate with this and not feel that you’re giving to the Lord?” Tickets for the concert will go on sale to the public on Monday, Nov. 1. Anyone who interested in singing in the concert should email Berdos at ccmusic.tom@gmail.com for more information.
