Mummert Named Mayor Of The Year

Elizabethtown Borough Mayor Chuck Mummert has been named Mayor of the Year by the Association of Mayors of the Boroughs of Pennsylvania (AMBP), which represents the state’s 956 borough communities.

Mummert has served as Elizabethtown’s mayor since 2010. Previously he was a borough council member from 2006 to 2010. He is active in many community groups, including the Rotary Club, and is also a member of the Lancaster County Boroughs Association. Additionally, he is a board member of the Chrostwaite Institute, which is dedicated to improving government efficiency, investment in core communities, fiscal stability, transportation, water infrastructure, and community and economic development, among other areas.

From 2016 to 2017, Mummert served as president of the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs (PSAB). He also served on the PSAB Resolutions and Policy Steering Committee, which helps to shape the legislative agenda for the organization.

Mummert has received numerous accolades over the years. He was the recipient of PSAB’s 2019 Anthony J. Defilippi Award for Outstanding Achievement in Government Affairs and the 2018 Governor’s Award for Local Government Excellence, which honors service to the community.

In his spare time, Mummert, known locally as the “Singing Mayor,” enjoys performing the national anthem for local professional sports teams and at churches and nursing facilities.

Beethoven Concert Series To Conclude

The Arts at Millersville University will present a concert by pianist Xun Pan as the multiseason series Beethoven’s 250th Birthday Celebration draws to a close. “Three Sonatas From Three Periods” will take place on Friday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Steinman Hall in the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. There is a ticket fee, and there are special rates for students.

Because the year 2020 marked the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, Pan, Millersville University’s Tell School of Music director of keyboard studies, commemorated the composer’s legacy by presenting a concert series performance of all 32 of the composer’s piano sonatas, 10 piano and violin sonatas, five piano and cello sonatas, and three variations. Pan, in partnership with violinist Simon Maurer and cellist Emilio Colón, has nearly completed the performance of all 50 works over several years, both locally and internationally.

For more information or to purchase tickets, go to www.artsmu.com.

Three local women were among the six Women In Technology (WIT) Award winners honored during a live virtual event held by the Technology Council of Central Pennsylvania (TCCP) on Sept. 8.

This year’s WIT Awards wrapped up a two-part virtual celebration of the fifth anniversary of TCCP’s continued commitment to celebrating women who are innovators, role models, trailblazers and inspirations within the technology community throughout the region.

Opening remarks were offered by Ann Hughes, president and CEO of TCCP.

Mary-Angela Kenney won this year’s WIT Impact Award Private Sector/Medium to Large Business. This award recognizes a woman in technology whose contributions have made a positive impact in the private sector/medium to large business market, which consists of companies employing 50 or more employees. Kenney is the vice president of innovation and technology with Fenner Precision Polymers in Manheim.

Kate Gallagher won this year’s WIT Impact Award Private Sector/Entrepreneurs to Small Business. This award recognizes a woman in technology whose contributions have had a positive impact in the entrepreneurial/small business sector, meaning companies that employ fewer than 50 employees. Gallagher is the chief operating officer with Advanced Metrics in Mountville.

Melissa Wall won this year’s WIT Next Gen Award. This award recognizes an up-andcoming young woman who is making a difference in technology in the region. Wall is a senior software engineer with Industrial Resolution in Lancaster.

In addition to the six awards, WIT scholarships were awarded to Caitlin Colicchio and Clair Cuvo. Colicchio is a junior at Bucknell University and Cuvo is a sophomore at Elizabethtown College.

Couple Marks “Whopper” Anniversary

Wayne and Mary Lou Lawton celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Sept. 4. The couple had originally purchased tickets to see “Queen Esther” at Sight & Sound Theatre, but received a message on Friday night that the theater would be closed that day and that their tickets would be honored at a later date.

The Lawsons’ daughter and son-in-law suggested they go to Burger King and order Whoppers so they would “have a ‘whopper’ of an anniversary and a ‘whopping’ good time.” So, Wayne and Mary Lou went to the Elizabethtown Burger King and ordered two Whopper meals. When the employees learned it was the Lawtons’ anniversary, they gave the couple a Hershey’s Sundae Pie.

The Arts at Millersville University will offer music, family events, and film in its fall season. Tickets are available for programs that will take place at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and at the Winter Visual & Performing Arts Center on the Millersville University (MU) campus, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville.

The film “Los Hermanos/The Brothers” will be shown on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Ware Center.

On We The People First Friday - Art Walk Weekend at the Ware Center, the Regitz Gallery will feature “Cultural Connection - 10 Years of Arts at the Ware.” The opening reception will take place on Friday, Oct. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., and the exhibit will remain on display through Friday, Oct. 29. The School District of Lancaster’s annual Student Exhibit will be displayed on Oct. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2 and 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

October arts events will also include Air Play acrobatics and illusion at the Winter Center on Sunday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m., with lobby activities at 2 p.m.; “Cartography,” an award-winning look at the journeys of immigrants and refugees, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Winter Center; and a performance by Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ware Center.

The season will also include jazz music performances at the Club 42 venue in the atrium of the Ware Center and America’s Got Talent winner Jackie Evancho, who will perform seasonal favorites in “Home for the Holidays” on Friday, Dec. 17, at the Winter Center.

For information on ticket purchases, visit www.artsmu .com, call the box office at 717871-7600, or stop by the Ware Center on Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
