After securing a few commercial accounts, he launched his own business, with the goal of providing superior service to area customers. Dave soon hired a helper and moved the business to a building on Gates Road in Hershey. In the late 1990s, the business started serving residential customers, and that piece of the business grew quickly. By 2010, the majority of the company’s customers were residential. Around that time, ECS Comfort purchased the old Simon Candy building in Elizabethtown and moved to the 31 N. Spruce St. location in the summer of 2010. From this location, ECS Comfort has been able to expand its services to include customers throughout the Lancaster, Lebanon, and Harrisburg areas. The business employs technicians who live as far away as Lancaster and Dillsburg, and the company’s technicians are often dispatched directly from their homes, which reduces the wait

maintenance program that allows customers to pay a small monthly fee that covers one or two system tune-ups and cleanings per year and includes discounts on any repairs or accessories that the customer needs or wants to purchase throughout the year. ECS Comfort follows a flat-rate pricing model, which means that once staff members diagnose the problem, they give customers a price to complete the work before they even start. Customers have the option to accept or decline before work begins, and there is never a surprise on the bill because a part cannot be found or because something takes longer than initially expected. The business stands behind its work, with technicians stating that if a customer is not happy with ECS Comfort’s service or equipment, the business will do what it takes to make it right. Ultimately, if the customer is not happy with a system that is installed, BCS will pull it out and refund the customer’s money with no questions asked. ECS Comfort offers 24-hour emergency service. The second event, the ninth annual Craft Fair With a Small Business Flair, will happen from 5 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 12 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 13. Local artists and craftspeople will have wares set up for folks to peruse and purchase on all three levels of the library. “It’s a fundraiser for the library and a means to showcase small businesses in the area,” explained organizer Dorinda Nolan. According to Nolan, this year’s event will feature approximately 40 vendors. “Sixteen of those are returning vendors, but all of the others are new,” Nolan noted. Handmade wheel-thrown pottery, gourd birdhouses and bowls, decorative pillows, upcycled home décor and crafts, jewelry, doll clothes, wreaths, greeting cards, and knitted, crocheted, and wooden items will be among the selection.
memberships are open to the public for a set annual fee. In addition to free entry to the annual book sale preview night, membership benefits include a 15 percent discount on the books, CDs, and DVDs that are available to purchase throughout the year in the bookstore located inside the library. Regular book sale hours will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, through Friday, Oct. 5. Books will be discounted beginning on Oct. 6, when the sale will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will also run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 12 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 13. Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted as forms of payment; however, credit card payments can only be processed during times when the library itself is open.
Proceeds from the vendor entry fees benefit the library, as well as all proceeds from a bake sale hosted by members of the MOMS Club of Elizabethtown. Additional food and beverages will be available to purchase at the Elizabethtown Coffee Company, located in the library. Several of the craft fair participants will be raising funds for other projects. For instance, Sara Risser, a missionary to Ecuador, will have arts and crafts created by Ecuadorians available to purchase, with all proceeds going back to the individuals who created the items. Other groups will raise support for a health clinic in Ethiopia and a tube well building project in Nepal. FOR PARTS - TIRES - SERVICE
Prayer Service from pg 1 with mental illness.” Cathi Myers, who has long provided leadership for the event, which will celebrate its 10th observance this year, echoed Didden’s comments. “We want to bring hope to people and help them find hope,” she said, noting that the theme of the 2018 service will be “When People With Mental Illness Don’t Want Help: Finding Hope.” “This topic is so relevant,” said Myers. This year’s service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Sponsoring ministries include No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM) and Faith Friendship Ministries. Assisting with the event is Minds Renewed, which meets at Calvary Church and is a division of Handi-Vangelism Ministries in Ephrata. Members of the organizing committee include Myers and Didden, as well as Clara Ames, executive director of NLAM, and Vicki Bollman, a volunteer with Minds Renewed. A number of experienced speakers will give presentations at the event. Dr. Karla Campanella, a family doctor and a missionary who is now a psychiatrist in the Philhaven system, will speak on the topic “Involuntary Commitment or 302.” Campanella will delve into what involuntary commitment involves, who can initiate it, and when to use it. “She will help people understand that process,” said Myers, who noted that Campanella has been well received as a past speaker. Dr. Susan Cabouli, a
psychotherapist with more than 20 years of experience, will speak about practical tips for finding hope, including an explanation of the LEAP method developed by Dr. Xavier Amador. LEAP stands for Listen-EmpathizeAgree-Partner, and the method is designed to help a caregiver gain the trust of a patient. LEAP involves empathizing without judgment. Loice Byler, founder of a ministry that helps those who struggle with anxiety and depression, especially women, will share her personal story of being a mental health consumer, including her acceptance and denial of treatment in the past. “She has seen a difference in her life when she has accepted treatment,” said Myers. “We thought that would be a good viewpoint to share.” Myers added that Byler will also offer practical tips and words of hope. Each year, organizers choose theme verses for the observance. This year’s verses include Psalm 33:22, which reads, “May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” Another theme verse is Hebrews 10:23, which reads, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Myers reported that the service will include congregational prayer, reading of the Scripture, and time for small group prayer as requested. There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. Readers who have questions may call 717-390-4891 or 717-285-5596.

Today, Mount Gretna is still visited each summer by thousands of people from throughout southcentral Pennsylvania, the U.S. and overseas. To date, the Pennsylvania Chautauqua has received nearly $850,000 in pledges from those who view the purchase of this portion of Soldiers Field as a unique and perhaps last-chance opportunity to protect and preserve this tract of land. A unified effort has resulted in pledges which have come from all sections of the Mount Gretna community as well as from around the country. Seventy percent of funds have come from individual and local businesses, with the rest being committed by the Pennsylvania Chautauqua Board of Managers and Pennsylvania Chautauqua Foundation.

A significant opportunity was recently presented to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua in Mount Gretna. A plot of land, part of historic Soldiers Field where the Pennsylvania National Guard held its annual encampment and training between 1885 and 1935 is being offered for sale to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua. Troops trained on Soldiers Field for service in the Spanish-American War and World War I. The land, originally part of Robert H. Coleman’s holdings, was donated by him for the Pennsylvania National Guard’s use. Coleman’s railroad line, the Cornwall Lebanon Railroad, now part of the Rails-to-Trails system, transported the soldiers to Mount Gretna, as well as their families and friends who came to visit them. Many postcards still exist picturing the soldiers and their daily lives while stationed at the field. On July 20, Pennsylvania Chautauqua stockholders voted to approve the purchase of the land which will benefit the Mount Gretna community in various ways: by preserving and enhancing the historical features of this portion of Soldiers Field;

Visitors will once again be able to experience the Herr’s Mill Covered Bridge in two distinct applications. The first half is slated to be completed by Saturday,
March 30, 2019, with the second half being completed approximately three years later. The opening to the public will be held on Monday, April 22, 2019, with the re-enactment of the Lincoln funeral train passing by the Herr’s Mill Covered Bridge. Tennis Team Knocks Off Donegal And Lebanon by Eric Pyles
The girls’ tennis team is riding a two-match winning streak after knocking off Donegal and Lebanon last week. The week did start on the down swing thanks to a 6-1 loss to Garden Spot on Tuesday where Tori Pollock earned the lone E-town victory. The winning started on Wednesday when the Lady Bears took out Donegal by a 4-3 count. Emily Louie and Kathryn Hackenberg picked up the lone doubles victory, topping Mary Murphy and Emma Shelly by an 8-6 final. Louie also accounted for one of the three singles wins, taking out Lyla Naqvi in three sets. Pollock needed just two sets to get by Murphy in number three singles but Araya Fahnestock needed all three sets to collect her win at number four singles. The going was much easier one day later with the Lady Bears trouncing visiting Lebanon by a 7-0
final. Lauren Masser, Louie, Pollock and Hackenberg all claimed easy singles wins with only Louie’s 6-4 second set victory opposite Everia Gonzalez counting as a close final. It was more of the same in doubles action as Elizabethtown won all three matches with ease. Masser and Pollock claimed the number one singles match while Louie and Hackenberg did the same at number two doubles and Mia Giordano and Anna Bert at number three doubles. BOYS’ SOCCER Sometimes a win is not just a win. For a test case look no further than the Elizabethtown boys’ soccer team’s past week. E-town dropped a 2-1 decision to Ephrata on Tuesday the 18th that bounced the Bears from their first-place tie with the Mountaineers, upping the ante for Thursday’s clash with LampeterStrasburg. The 2-0 bounce back win over the Pioneers kept E-town just a game off Ephrata’s first place pace and in a second-place tie with Man-

heim Central with roughly half the season in the books. Evan Schneider netted both scores against L-S, banging home the go head score approximately two minutes before a 61st minute insurance goal. Tyler Bixler helped out with one assist with Brecken Musser earning the shutout win thanks to a three save game. Elizabethtown was unable to find similar heroics two days priors when they fell to the Mountaineers in
Ephrata. Angel Gonzalez-Garcia put the host squad up 1-0 in the 21st minute and scored the game winner in the 53rd minute to take player of the game honors. In between the two Gonzalez-Garcia scores, Caleb Gerber found the back of the net for Elizabethtown with his goal knotting the game at 1-1 in the 29th minute. Musser finished the loss with four saves. FOOTBALL The football team dropped their
third straight game last Friday, falling to Manheim Central by a 50-0 count. The Barons used a stifling defense to limit E-town to a mere 141 yards of offense with just 19 of that coming on the ground. Zach Frank led that ground attack with seven carries for 16 yards, adding three catches for 19 yards. Cole Patrick finished the affair 14 of 25 for 122 yards with Dylan Sweger claiming favorite receiver status with his four grabs for 36 yards. CROSS COUNTRY It was a tail of two sides for the cross country teams in last Tuesday’s tri-met with Hempfield and Warwick. Katie Locker (19:13), Madeline Quinn (19:14) and Cat Shontz (19:15) claimed the top three places to lead E-town to a 21-34 win over Hempfield and a 23-32 victory over Warwick. Sierra Kapcsos finished 11th with a time of 22:11 while Kate Weissend finished up the top five for Elizabethtown with a 12th place time of 22:20. Jesse Myers (17:17) and Garrick English (17:41) picked up the top 10 finishes on the boy’s side with Myers taking fifth and English 10th. Alex Hartman just missed the top 10, finishing 14 seconds behind English and in 11th place. Nat McCloud was the next Bear to finish, doing so with a time of 17:57, good enough for 13th place. Nathan Johnson was the final scorer for Elizabethtown, taking 14th place with a time of 18:42. Back on September 15th the Bears traveled to Big Spring High School for the 23rd Annual Ben Bloser Bulldog Invitational. The Lady Bears placed four runners in the top 20 on their way to a seventh-place team finish which was the best finish out of the eight L-L teams in the AAA race. Shontz posted the top finish, taking fourth with a time of 19:14.41 while Locker slipped inside the top 20 with a 19th place run of 20:25.18. Quinn split the pair, taking 13th with a time of 19:58.33. Kapcsos was the next E-town runner to finish, taking 81st with a time of 23:04.65. Lady Charger Volleyball Collects Two Shutouts After an intense string of matches, Lady Charger volleyball had a slowerpaced schedule last week with only two games, but their tempo on the court couldn’t have been much more intense as they toppled both competitors in decisive 3-0 sweeps. Capping the week with a home court victory over New Covenant Christian, the Lady Chargers took control from the onset and never let up (25-7, 25-9, 25-8). “What I really liked about this game was that our girls came together and pulled out aggressive offensive plays even when we were out of system,” explained head coach Kate Ferrari. “If the setter was taken out of the play by taking the first pass, we had girls who stepped right up to set up the aggressive attack at the net.” Heading up the attack was sophomore Kami Mummau whose 11 kills ignited the Charger offense, and Haley Witmer was pivotal in setting up the plays and doling out 14 assists. Service was also key in the takedown with Kara Locker leading that charge firing eight aces to a scrambling New Covenant defense. Freshman, Kacy Robinson, also stepped up big from behind the line, taking the Chargers on a scoring run in the third set and delivering three aces of her own. “I was really proud of our freshmen who stepped up in this game, it was another great night,” celebrated Ferrari. Kicking off their week in a dominate fashion, the Lady Chargers claimed their first victory of the week in three quick sets on a trip to Christian School of York (25-3, 25-4, 25-5). The contest was all about the serve, led by Haley Witmer’s outstanding 27 aces, the team never allowed CSY to gain their footing long enough to contend. “I think the key here was that the girls played their game,” noted Ferrari. “Lately we have been giving up runs in games because we get comfortable and let up. Today we played more evenly.” Witmer complimented her serving with five assists, and Kara Locker got on the board with three kills. GIRLS’ SOCCER Their overall record reads 7-2, but last week’s magic scoring combination seemed to be 6-1 for Lady Chargers soccer, as they took on three separate opponents and conquered each by the exact same count. Saturday took the Lady Chargers on a trip to Halifax, where they claimed their third set of six goals while only allowing one. Sophomore Julia Martin powered in an impressive four goals, bringing her 2018 goal count up to 15 only midway through the season. Shuffling up player positions, Olivia Yordy, typically a defensive player, got her opportunity on the offensive end of the field and capitalized with two goals against Halifax. Marlie Niedwick, a freshman, gained more experience in goal, collecting seven saves. Twenty-four hours earlier, the Mount Calvary team took down Hershey Christian. This time five different players supplied the six goals. Yordy again claimed two, while Martin, Leah Hawryluk, Brittney Taylor, and Naomi
Ewing each had one. On Tuesday night, the Lady Chargers got off to a slow start, but an explosive second half allowed them to claim the first of their three 6-1 victories, this time over the Harrisburg Christian Knights. After a relatively quiet first half, the Chargers were leading 1-0 thanks to a deep shot rocketed off the foot of Ewing, but stamina became the name of the game heading into the second 40. In the opening minutes of the second half, the Lady Chargers were awarded a free kick from well-outside the 18. Ewing sent the ball soaring
success, but defender Ambria Good stepped up to stop a Knight striker on a break-away, returning the action to the Charger offensive end of the field. “Ambria Good and Olivia Yordy in back did a great job of preventing open shots and covering some fast breakaways,” praised Schmitkons. MC freshman, Elena Hatfield, found the ball at the right place and right time and placed a shot out of reach of the Knight keeper to knock in her first varsity goal. To their credit, the Knights did not give up, though facing a 5-1 uphill battle, and continued to create offensive opportunities. On one attack the Knight striker collided with Charger keeper Hawryluk, resulting in an injury for Hawryluk that removed her from the game. Niedwick stepped in to fill Hawryluk’s position and a desperate HC team sought one more opportunity earning a corner kick. After the Harrisburg corner flew into the goal box, Taylor gained possession. Taylor and Martin worked in tandem to take the ball coast to coast catching the Knight defense off guard and Martin slipped in the final goal of

overhead dropping directing behind the HC keeper for her second goal and igniting a scoring surge for the Chargers. Three minutes later it was Brittney Taylor who capitalized, maneuvering the ball through center field traffic and placing a low ball into the bottom right corner of the net, giving Mount Calvary a 3-0 advantage. With 20 left to play, it was Julia Martin’s turn to outwit her defender with some fancy footwork giving her space in the center of the goalbox which she finished with a high-powered shot to the left for the fourth MC goal. Though in a deep deficit, the Knights retaliated with a charge of their own, taking advantage of their next possession to find the net, putting the score at 4-1. Gaining momentum, Harrisburg Christian carried the ball down field again, seeking a repeat of their

the contest minutes before time expired. “It is exciting to see some of our younger players getting more involved in the last few games,” explained Schmitkons. “All in all, this was one of our best full team efforts!” BOYS’ SOCCER Rain postponed one of the boys

games last week, but in the three remaining contests the Chargers treated their home fans to two exhilarating wins, and dropped one match on the road. Sophomore Damian Rutt had a week of great success, registering six goals in the two wins. Capping the week with a 3-2 sudden death overtime win over York Country Day, Rutt picked up a hat trick scoring all three MC goals. Though the Chargers held the majority of possession, York capitalized on an early breakaway and were the first to score to lead most of the game. Rutt’s first goal came after the ball rattled around the Greyhound goal box. Leighland Olsen dished to Rutt who connected to even the score. York struck again and sought to hold onto their slim lead as the clock wound down, but Rutt knocked in the equalizer with 12 minutes left to play. Gaining momentum in the final minutes, the Chargers continued to rocket shots at the Greyhound keeper, but the buzzer sounded with no success. Ignited by the urgency of a sudden death overtime period, it took Rutt just 53 seconds to drive the ball home and put an end to the contest. Thursday night the Chargers tasted defeat at Lancaster County Christian, suffering a 5-0 loss to the Lions. In Tuesday’s 4-3 triumph over Christian School of York, a scoreless first half gave little indication of the
slew of goals to come in the second half of the clash between the Chargers and the CSY Crusaders. The Chargers broke the goal line first, when sophomore Damian Rutt netted the first goal of the contest 14 minutes in by utilizing a corner kick opportunity and curving the ball into the goal. CSY retaliated hard, knocking in two goals within 60 seconds of each other to turn the advantage temporarily in favor of the Crusaders. Hansen Crick chipped a shot into the goal to even the tally at two apiece, but neither team was close to done yet. CSY struck next notching their third and final goal with 11 minutes left to play, but the Chargers had plenty of fight still in them-collecting a pair of goals, both supplied by Rutt, in the final five minutes of regulation to seal their victory. “Overall, the game was quite exciting for the fans, nervous for the coaches, and a memorable one for the players,” reflected head coach Marc Myers. “There were many things that we want to improve on, but we never gave up and kept pushing.” GOLF Though the golf team came in fourth in last Tuesday’s quad-match held at Four Seasons Golf Course, two Mount Calvary golfers claimed their own personal bests to give the Charger morale a boost.
Dayspring Christian Academy claimed the match followed by Lancaster County Christian and High Point Baptist. Though the Mount Calvary club came in last, they continue to keep focusing on team encouragement and personal improvement. Danny Smullen led the team with the best carded score of the day, shooting a 93. “Danny played very well, 93 is his personal best in a match,” pointed out head coach Matt Owlett. “I’m hoping he will qualify for districts.” Also rising to a personal best was Hunter Stewart’s 122 stroke game. “Hunter [Stewart] continues to improve and seems to elevate his game in matches,” added Owlett. David Ellis (132) and Tyler Masters (139) contributed the other two top four scores to the team total of 486. Wednesday, the Charger club got a chance to compete against Schuylkill Valley in a nine-hole match at Willow Hollow Golf Course. Though collectively bested by Schuylkill, the team continued to encourage each other to compete. Smullen again carded the days lowest score for the Chargers with a 43. Ellis supplied a 51-stroke effort, Stewart a 53, and Hayden Merrick rounded out the top four with a 57.

E-town’s Eric Gilbert carded a round of 92 to finish ninth in the individual scoring and help the Bears to a third-place finish in last Friday’s Section Two match at Tanglewood.
while both Eric Gilbert and Matt Pottgeiser finished their nine holes with a score of 50. The regular season finale took place on the 21st with a round at Tanglewood Golf Club. The Bears had three players in double digits for the full 18 holes putting them third on the day behind Warwick and Ephrata. Krisko capped the regular season with a round of 88, securing his place in the L-L Championships. Williams and Gilbert posted the other two double digit rounds and will be joining Krisko at Conestoga Country Club. Williams carded a 91 at Tanglewood with Gilbert one shot back. Pottgeiser (108) and Westin Kolaric (109) rounded out Elizabethtown’s top five for the day. Jolene Markley will join the trio at the L-L tournament as the lone Lady Bear representative. VOLLEYBALL The Lady Bear volleyball team bounced back from a rough 0-3 day at the Hempfield Tournament on the 15th by knocking off Lebanon and Ephrata to stretch their regular match winning streak to six. Elizabethtown had little trouble during their trip to Lebanon on the 18th, picking up the 3-0 victory with wins of 25-13, 25-6 and 25-18. Sydney Stewart led the way with six kills and seven aces. Julia Rathsam had 12 assists while Ashley NyeSmith chipped in with six digs. Two days later the Lady Bears earned their sixth straight 3-0 victory by topping Ephrata (25-19, 25-18, 25-18). Hayden Calaman piloted the offense this time around and finished with 16 assists and seven digs. Rathsam and Elizabeth Vuxta matched those seven digs with NyeSmith adding five aces and Krimson Dougherty nine kills and two blocks.

good enough for 104th place in the 162-runner field. Myers led the way on the boy’s side with English close behind. Myers claimed 29th place and English 31st with times of 17:24.24 and 17:26.80. McCloud was the next Bear to finish, doing so in 43rd place with a time of 17:45.55. Hartman was the final E-town runner to finish in the top 100, taking 82nd with a time of 18:29.04. Johnson missed the top 100 by about four seconds with his 18:44.56 putting him 104th in the 210 runner field. All together the five Bears posted a ninthplace team finish, settling in as the third best L-L team of the day. FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team picked up their first win of the 2018 season on September 21st, topping McCaskey by a 1-0 count. Jessie Zimmerman scored the game’s lone goal, with help from Cat Duncan, with 10:28 remaining in the contest. Alaina Telenko, in goal for the second half of the affair, kept the Lady Tornado at bay to secure the win. Mackenzie Atticks covered the cage in the opening half and picked up the only save necessary to keep the shutout intact. Elizabethtown found themselves on the opposite side of shutout finals in their other two games last week. The first was a 7-0 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on Tuesday while the second was a 2-0 loss to Solanco on Wednesday. Atticks and Telenko split time in goal for both of those games as well with Atticks finishing with a combined nine saves and Telenko securing 14 saves. GIRLS’ SOCCER A busy four game week for the Elizabethtown girls’ soccer team ended with the Lady Bears taking a 0-4 hit, dropping them to 2-8-1 on the year. E-town kicked off the week on Monday with a 5-0 loss to Exeter Township. Kaitlyn Snyder finished with 10 saves but she was unable to solve Jackie Richards who tallied a hat trick for Exeter in the win. Elizabethtown returned to L-L play on Tuesday by hosting Ephrata. The Lady Mountaineers left after dealing out a 5-1 loss. Snyder posted another 10 save effort but her work was undone by Ephrata’s Maddie Root who finished with one goal and three assists. The Lady Bears hosted Central Dauphin on Thursday and the Lady Rams left town after dishing out a 3-0 loss thanks to a ball control offense that resulted in a 21-1 shot edge for the visitors. Friday’s showdown with Lampeter-Strasburg could not be decided in 80 minutes and nearly wasn’t decided in 100 minutes. Snyder finished with eight saves but was unable to handle Sarah Doutrich’s shot that gave the Lady Pioneers the win with just 30 seconds remaining in the contest. GOLF The golf team closed out the regular season last week with their final two matches. The Bears opened the week on Monday with a nine-hole round at Meadia Heights. Behind Alex Williams and his second-place score of 40 the Bears finished 4-1 on the day with the only loss coming against Warwick. Connor Krisko finished six shots behind his teammate in 11th place

Nursing Program Holds Dedication Of Hands The division of nursing at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences held its second annual Dedication of Hands ceremony on Aug. 22. low. Families of choir members were able to make the final decision on whether to allow their children to participate in the trip. Nearly all of the families decided to continue with the trip as planned. Choir members used the entire year to prepare for their third international trip with EMM’s GO! Summer program, a short-term mission exposure opportunity offered during the summer. Both local and global opportunities are available. Previous international trips included locations such as Germany, Albania, and Bulgaria. The choir’s preparation included learning several Indonesian songs and visiting the Philadelphia Indonesian Mennonite Church. Multiple fundraisers were held, including a dinner featuring authentic Indonesian cuisine. Participants were required to go through a slightly abbreviated version of the EMM application process that other short-term applicants undergo. Much like EMM’s other global workers, participants experienced discipleship, culture, and language training in preparation for the trip. The choir’s mission is to train children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. MCCL’s five different groups - one of which is the Chamber Choir - have a total of approximately 170 members representing 75 congregations from 17 denominations. A program of Lancaster Mennonite School, MCCL also includes students from 53 schools, as well as homeschooled students.

The Chamber Choir of the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) recently participated in a GO! Summer mission assignment with Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). The 29 participating students visited Indonesia from June 26 to July 14. The choir, directed by Rosemary Blessing, performed in four airports, multiple museums, several Mennonite churches, two cultural festivals also featuring Muslim and Buddhist performances, a rice field, the tip of a volcano, two Islamic boarding schools, a palace, and one mosque. At some of the venues, the students were able to have faith conversations with Muslims. The trip challenged participants to widen their worldviews. These interfaith experiences were organized by the director of the Indonesian Mennonite Diakonal Service, Paulus Hartono, who has worked with peacemaking and Christian-Muslim relations in his city of Solo and throughout the country for the past 20 years. Following his experience with the Chamber Choir, Hartono posted a video on Facebook proposing three languages for peace: smiles, singing, and taking pictures. The trip occurred in the wake of five bombings in the Indonesian city of Surabaya in May. Three churches were among the targets of the attacks. After intensive security analyses, EMM, its Indonesian partners, and MCCL determined that the risk level for the choir was

mind, body and spirit. The Dedication of Hands is a new ceremony for Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing students, replacing the historical tradition of capping ceremonies, during which novice students would receive their cap prior to attending their first clinical experience and returning students would receive a stripe indicating their program year. During the ceremony, faculty members performed the washing and drying of hands, symbolically uniting faculty and students in the profession of nursing. Faculty member Kay Buchanan and Sage Olnick, Class of 2005, were set to offer keynote remarks during three sessions offered throughout the day. The legacy of nursing care was celebrated through the inclusion of two special guests. Cassie Kohr, a student in the threeyear Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, attended with Mary Coldren Kurian, a 1936 graduate of the school, then the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Now 103 years old, Mary is believed by the college to

be its oldest living alumna. Kurian enjoyed a long career at Lancaster General Hospital as a nurse anesthetist, retiring in 1980. Kohr and Kurian met at Homestead Village in Lancaster, where Kohr works part time and Kurian has lived since 1996. While nursing education and practice have changed dramatically since Kurian entered
the field, the two women have bonded over their shared devotion to the profession. After learning that Kurian’s 1936 class photo had been misplaced during a move, Kohr worked with the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences’ office of alumni relations to find a replacement, which she gave to Mary as a Christmas gift last year.

Johns Hopkins School of International Studies in Bologna, Italy, and served in the U.S. Air Force at Andrews Air Force Base in suburban Washington, D.C., as a medical administrative specialist. Aug. 26 was the last Sunday that Lescallette preached and led worship at St. John’s as pastor. An estimated 145 parishoners, family members, and friends attended the service, after which a reception was held in the parlor, featuring cake and other food, old photos, and more. Lescallette received
many cards and gifts, as well. Lescallette moved out of the historic parsonage in Maytown on June 26 and now lives in suburban East Shore Harrisburg. He intends to retain his membership in Maytown and occasionally worship there. He plans to do “supply preaching” at congregations throughout the area. St. John’s will be served by an interim pastor from Lancaster, the Rev. David Kreider, until a call committee is formed and a new permanent pastor is chosen.

“Paths to Prosperity: A Story of Two Generations has been set as the theme for the third annual gala to benefit Mom’s House of Lancaster. The event will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, at Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. The doors will open at 5 p.m., at which time attendees may purchase beverages and place bids in a silent auction. The plated dinner will be served at 6 p.m. A social hour will be held following the meal along with a program that will include a live auction and several speakers. Lori Burkholder will act as master of ceremonies.
The auctions will feature jewelry, getaways, fine dining, spa experiences, sports memorabilia, and entertainment. There will also be an opportunity to win a stay in a Lancaster County bed-and-breakfast. Mom’s House executive director Sara Johns and gala committee member Carole Kirchner related that the client speakers are slated to be an adult who attended Mom’s House as a child, a mother who graduated from the program, and a father who has participated in the program as well. “We give (parents) a chance to break the cycle of poverty through education and child care, Johns explained. “They offer support to the moms and dads

Conservation leaders from these states met for educational programs, tours, and networking. After the meeting, the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts Inc. Currently, 20 children and 14 parents are active Mom’s House clients. At least a dozen families are on the waiting list. The program, which has been in existence for 28 years, has recently mushroomed. “We have tripled in terms of staff and doubled in terms of children in the last two years,” said gala committee chair Dan Massey. Individual contributions are the primary source of funding Mom’s House, Johns said, and the gala provides additional support. “Community awareness (of the existence and purpose of Mom’s House) is still a big portion of why we do the gala,” Massey
