Pie Sale Will Support Dyslexia Center By Dayna M. Reidenouer
T h e m e m b e r s o f t h e Va l l e y o f Lancaster Lodge of Perfection are gearing up for their biannual pie-making frenzy. In preparation for Thanksgiving, which will be observed on Thursday, Nov. 22, the Masons are taking orders for 10 types of handcrafted, 10-inch, deep-dish dessert pies. Thursday, Oct. 25, has been set as the deadline for orders. The pies will be available for pickup at Lancaster County Masonic lodges in Lancaster, Quarryville, Ephrata, Elizabethtown, and Mount Joy on Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 2 to 6 p.m. This fall’s lineup includes baked and chilled minced meat, apple crumb, cherry crumb, peach crumb, and pumpkin, as well as fresh sugar-free apple, baked frozen pumpkin, and unbaked frozen apple crumb, cherry crumb, and peach
crumb. The frozen pies may be stored until Christmas, although lodge member and pie project chair Bill Hackman said that he has successfully frozen pies for two years thanks to the heavy freezer bags the lodge uses to protect the baked goods. The Masons make their pie dough from scratch, and they use Hackman’s mother’s recipe for pumpkin pie. All of the crumbs on the fruit pies are made with butter, and the apples are peeled and sliced fresh. While some premade fillings are used, the Masons put their own twist on them, such as adding tart red cherries to the cherry pie filling. It takes at least 150 people to cover the shifts in the kitchen at the Masonic Center, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster. The lodge members painstakingly build these pies to raise funds for the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster, which has See Pie Sale pg 12
The Valley of Lancaster Lodge of Perfection is accepting orders for dessert pies that will be available for pickup on Nov. 20 in time for Thanksgiving. Orders are due by Oct. 25, and proceeds will benefit the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster.
DSAA To Hold Sober Spooktacular HMPS Apple Festival To Offer Bushels Of Fun By Chelsea Peifer
By Chelsea Peifer
As Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) chairman Stacy Emminger and assistant director Lexi Mercado brainstormed ideas and researched potential options for speakers at the organization’s upcoming fundraising dinner, they hoped to find someone from outside the local area whom people had not heard from before. When someone suggested Brandon Novak, a well-known skateboarder and MTV celebrity with a powerful testimony and commitment to the recovery community, Emminger immediately began pursuing the possibility and was thrilled when he agreed to travel to Mount Joy to share his story. Novak will speak at the DSAA Sober Spooktacular, which is set to take place from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The public is invited to attend and enjoy an evening of spooky-themed

Brandon Novak festivities. “Part of our goal is to raise awareness, and we also wanted to make it fun so that’s why we went with Halloween,” Emminger noted. Costumes are optional but certainly welcome. “We will be dressing up, so we hope everyone else will too,” said Emminger. See Sober Spooktacular pg 2
Attendees may enter to win an apple-themed gift basket at the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society’s 13th annual Apple Festival on Oct. 7 in Bainbridge. Live music, children’s activities, tours of the Haldeman Mansion, and all sorts of apple foods and beverages will also be part of the event.

The Sober Spooktacular will kick off with a social hour from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Live music will be performed by Memory Laps(e), a southcentral Pennsylvania-based band that specializes in psychedelic party music, playing both covers and original songs. A photo booth will be on hand, and ghoulish games are also planned. A silent auction will offer a variety of items and experiences for folks to browse and bid on throughout the evening, including designer purses, a lithograph print autographed by Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown, gift cards, themed baskets, and more. Winners will be announced at the close of the evening. At 6 p.m., a buffet-style dinner complete with beef, chicken, vegetarian, and gluten-free entrée options will be served, followed by a dessert buffet. Novak will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Born in Baltimore, Novak is known for being a professional skateboarder with the renowned Powell-Peralta team. He appeared in several popular MTV films as well as the television shows “Viva La Bam” and “Bam’s Unholy Union” starring Bam Margera. In 2008, Novak and co-author Joseph Frantz published “Dreamseller,” a book based on Novak’s life and experiences with heroin in Baltimore. He now travels the country as an
addiction and recovery speaker for Banyan Treatment Center in order to raise awareness and help addicts find the treatment that they need. To purchase tickets to the Sober Spooktacular, interested individuals may visit http://dsasquared.org or stop in at DSAA, 15 W. Main St., Mount Joy. DSAA hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays, noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, and 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays. Proceeds from the event will support the operating costs of DSAA as it continues to fulfill its mission to bring awareness to the community on heroin and opiate abuse. The organization’s mission, according to its website, is also to educate the community that heroin and opiate addiction is a treatable disease and to provide support to families affected by addiction and to individuals in recovery. DSAA recently celebrated one year in its current offices, and Emminger said the organization is looking for an even larger space to facilitate events it hosts, such as family support groups and educational trainings. This fall, DSAA will be adding a Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) meeting to its list of supportive approaches to addiction services. For more details on DSAA, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call 717-492-4596.

Schreiber Pediatric held its 30th annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival on Sept. 9. The event raised more than $115,000, which will go directly to support Schreiber’s array of therapy and educational services. This year’s Duckie Day at Lancaster County Central Park was curtailed because of heavy rain. Schreiber still managed a successful Duckie campaign because of higher-than-expected Duckie ticket sales and generous sponsorship support. Day-of sales fell short of the average total of $10,000 because of the weather, but supporters have helped erase that shortfall by making contributions after the event. The largest post-race gift came from Orrstown Bank, which had originally sponsored the event and sold tickets in its Lancaster County branches. Orrstown Bank contributed an additional $15,000. Donations can still be made via check or at www.schreiberpediatric.org /donate. This year’s event sold about 15,000 yellow and blue tickets. At the end of the festival, Schreiber ambassadors Kami Appleby, Giuliana and Paxton Grasso and Connery Pham randomly selected winning tickets, and local news reporter Mike Straub read the winning numbers. The prize-winning numbers from the yellow duck race are: $1,000 Visa gift card, 01826; Family Fun package, 13995; Dinner and a Movie Package, 04938; Local Fun for Two Package, 04508; Out to Eat Package, 08035; Ice Cream Package,

The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) recently bestowed Criminal Justice System for the 21st Century Best Practices Awards. The 2018 Best Practices Award in the large county jail category was presented to Lancaster County Prison for their PrisonStat Program, an active leadership strategy to achieve transparency, accountability, and efficiency at the prison, drive real measurable results, and help turnaround within the organization. First initiated in 2016, PrisonStat is modeled on the Performance Stat idea which is an active leadership model that uses an ongoing series of regular meetings during which the chief executive and/or leadership team uses current data to analyze aspects of an organization’s performance. This continuing analysis of predetermined metrics produces results by pushing the organization toward performance targets. It also provides leaders with the ability to articulate to the organization and public what improved results need to be demonstrated. Each department head is assigned a metric pertaining to their job description, and are responsible for oversight of a specific area. They are held accountable during
the public meeting scheduled every two months and their performance is transparent for the public to see whether positive or negative. An Honorable Mention in the large jail category was awarded to Berks County Prison for their Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification. With their rising mental health population, they recognized a need to improve staff training and education about signs and symptoms of mental illness, for all staff, especially custody supervisors and correctional officers. Staff was trained through Mental Health First Aid USA, an eighthour course that teaches a five-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer and self-help care. This approach is demonstrating results throughout the prison and better outcomes for both inmates and staff. The 2018 recipient of the Juvenile Alternatives Program Award is Lancaster County for their P.U.L.S.E. Evening Treatment Center. Lancaster County’s Juvenile Court, the Office of Juvenile Probation, and the Children and Youth Agency were experiencing a reduced accessibility to
specialized programs, as well as the closure of some residential facilities. This resulted in their need to seek out opportunities to keep low to moderate risk juveniles within close proximity to home and community resources which could parallel the successful outcomes of long-term placements. The Youth Intervention Center initially developed the P.U.L.S.E. Weekend Program with the objective of providing short-term, evidence-based treatment with the goal of diverting juveniles away from the need for long-term placements. The participant’s goals, program length, and groups will be determined based on recommendations from the juvenile probation officer or children and youth caseworker, consultation with the parents/guardians, and results of various assessments. The youths participate in evidence-based programs, as well as psycho-educational groups. The results are demonstrated in improved outcomes for juveniles and their families. The Partner Award recipient is Carolyn McKenna, director of development at Home of the Sparrow in Chester County. Trauma histories, substance use, housing and self-sufficiency are among the
challenges facing women’s successful reentry from incarceration in Chester County’s criminal justice system. Partnering with the County Criminal Justice System, Home of the Sparrow provides case management services to women re-integrating into their communities following the Collaborative Casework-Women Model developed by the National Institute of Corrections. Home of the Sparrow embraces the philosophy that case management for justice-involved women should be a dynamic, seamless process from entry into the system and continue until the woman is stabilized in her community with the goal of not only reducing criminal behavior but increasing the health and well-being of women, their families, and community. They provide a comprehensive case management model that addresses the complex and multiple needs of women involved with the justice system, recognizing that women have strengths that can be mobilized, while matching services in accordance with risk level and need. CCAP salutes everyone involved in these efforts for being innovative pioneers in meeting the challenges facing all county jails and juvenile justice providers.

Ryan Reflects On Battle Of Mogadishu By Chelsea Peifer
The Battle of Mogadishu took place 25 years ago, but the details remain fresh in the mind of retired United States Army Maj. Timothy Ryan. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about being over there with my guys or something that happened over there,” said Ryan. “I remember it so vividly.” The Battle of Mogadishu was fought on Oct. 3 and 4 in 1993 as various United States military elite special operations units were in Mogadishu, Somalia, to destabilize the government and bring humanitarian aid, along with the support of UNOSOM II (United Nations Operation in Somalia). Ultimately the goal of the mission was accomplished, but things became deadly during the Battle of Mogadishu. Details of the events were later published in the 1999 book “Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War” by Mark Bowden and portrayed in the 2001 movie “Black Hawk Down.” As part of Second Platoon, Charlie Company, 2-14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Ryan was a part of the rescue force for the Battle of
Your
Mogadishu. Ryan recalled being in the mess hall, and while the food on that deployment had been notoriously terrible, on that particular day the cooks told everyone how excited they were to have gotten pork chops to serve. The mood quickly changed when Ryan looked out a window and saw thick black smoke rising from the area of the Bakaara Market, a dangerous zone where Somali military commander and political leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid resided. Shortly afterward, the battalion commander informed them that one United States Black Hawk helicopter had crashed in the city and another had crashed about 1 mile south, leaving 99 United States military personnel trapped in the city. “I gathered the guys and said if it were you, you’d want someone to do everything they could to get you out of there, so that’s what we’re going to do,” stated Ryan. “I also told them that night was going to define their lives whether they fought bravely or not.” Halfway through the city, the Humvee line that Ryan was part of was ambushed, forcing the soldiers to get out and defend themselves. From
United States Army Maj. Timothy Ryan (seated, far left) is pictured with the members of Second Platoon, Charlie Company, 2-14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division of the United States Army in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993. there, Alpha Company headed to the site of the first helicopter crash while Charlie Company went to the second crash site. Ryan said that when they arrived they learned that all of the men had been killed, with the exception of Chief Warrant Officer Michael Durant, a pilot who had been taken hostage. “It had changed from search-andrescue to being on the defensive,” Ryan said. Sporadic fighting continued
through the night, but at daybreak Ryan’s unit headed for cover, as most operations are carried out under nightfall to help ensure safety and success. “We were fighting against an entire city, but there was just no question about it: We weren’t going to leave anyone behind,” said Ryan. “(The Battle of Mogadishu) is a real testament to the American soldier and their resolve to not leave anyone behind.”
Manheim resident and retired United States Army Maj. Timothy Ryan (right), pictured with fellow soldier Kenny Haines, will travel to Fort Drum, N.Y., to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu on Oct. 3. Ryan and Haines fought together in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993. Ryan emphasized that American soldiers are trained not only to fight battles, but to value and recognize humanity even in war. He noted that in Somalia, enemy combatants would use women and children as shields, sending them into the front battle lines. “They used the fact that we were decent people to their advantage,” remarked Ryan. “But it is a deep-seeded American value that we fight with honor.”
According to Ryan, the battle ended with 18 Americans dead and 78 wounded. “It was a really defining period of my life,” Ryan said. Ryan, who grew up in Lebanon, currently resides in Manheim with his wife, Gayle, and their three children. He will travel to Fort Drum, N.Y., in early October to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu.

Church Plans Ethnic Food Festival
A variety of foods from Eastern Europe and East Africa will be available during the annual Slavic “Plus” Food Fest at Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church in Harrisburg on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 and 7.
Church tours will be available during Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church’s Slavic “Plus” Food Fest. The church was built in a style reminiscent of traditional village churches in Eastern Europe, and the interior is covered with traditional iconography. Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church, 5501 Old Locust Lane, Harrisburg, will hold its annual ethnic food festival, the Slavic “Plus” Food Fest, in the church’s fellowship hall on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 and 7, from noon to 3 p.m. The event will feature traditional delicacies from two different parts of the world, Eastern Europe and East Africa. The annual food festival will include giveaway drawings for more than three dozen themed baskets, a vendor fair featuring specialty merchants, Orthodox Christian religious articles and books available for purchase, and tours of Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church. Admission and parking are
Slavic dishes at the festival will include holubki, also known as holubtsy, halupki, or golubtsi. The name literally means pigeons, but there is no pigeon in holubki. The dish consists of a mixture of seasoned ground meats and rice wrapped in cabbage leaves and braised in a savory broth until tender. The church will also serve pirohy, also known as pierogi or varenniki, crescent-shaped pockets of fresh pasta stuffed with cheesy mashed potatoes and served with diced onions in butter. Other items will include the garlicky smoked pork sausage known as kolbassy (kielbasa); halushky, noodles sautéed with cooked chopped cabbage and onions; and Macedonian burgers
free. The event is open to the public. The foods at the Slavic “Plus” Food Fest represent the ancestral homelands and heritage of the people who founded Christ the Saviour parish in 1963. Many of these founders were first-generation Americans whose parents had immigrated to the U.S. from Eastern European countries, including Ukraine, Slovakia, Poland, Russia, Belarus, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Romania. For the past several years, the menu has also included the cuisine of the ancient African Christian kingdom of Aksum, thanks to a contingent of Eritrean and Ethiopian immigrants who constitute approximately one quarter of the parish’s membership.
known as sharska pleskavica or lovechka pleskavica, seasoned with onions, herbs, and bell peppers. Alongside these tastes of Eastern Europe will be a fragrant Eritrean and Ethiopian chicken dish known as tsebi derho in Eritrean or doro wat in Ethiopian. The dish is a stew of chicken simmered in a slow-cooked base of seasoned onions and a blend of ground, toasted spices known as berbere. This year, there will be two versions, mild and spicy. Both versions will be accompanied by a stretchy, bubbly flatbread called injera, made with the ancient African grain teff. The menu will also include alicha, a
savory Eritrean and Ethiopian vegetable stew, also served with injera. Desserts will include Slavic nut rolls, poppy-seed rolls, and apricot rolls, featuring sweet filling rolled up in a bread dough and baked into long, slender loaves. Kifli, traditional Slavic cookies with sweet walnut paste rolled up in a diamond of pastry, along with baklava and other treats will be available. The church will also serve hombasha, or himbasha, a slightly sweet Eritrean and Ethiopian bread seasoned with cardamom and made for celebrations. All food served at the festival will be handmade at the
church by parishioners, with the exception of the kolbassy, which is handcrafted by a traditional artisanal sausage shop. In addition to the food festival, Christ the Saviour’s cultural celebrations include an International Day of food and culture on Pentecost Sunday. Also, each November the Eritrean and Ethiopian community at Christ the Saviour parish hosts a fellowship hour that features East African foods and traditions. The Christ the Saviour parish community is ethnically diverse, and the worship is in English. For more information, readers may visit www.ctshbg.org.

battle. Solanco built and maintained their lead through an old school ground and pound style that accounting for every one of the Mules 389 yards of offense. Meanwhile Elizabethtown mounted their comeback behind their spread attack that accounted for 368 of their 437 yards including five of their seven TDs. Solanco’s ground attack was fronted by QB Joel McGuire who tallied roughly half the Mule offense with 184 rushing yards and four scores including a one-yard plunge that opened the scoring in the first quarter. Patrick answered back with the first of his four TD passes, this one a 24-yard strike to Alex Diahn who finished with four catches for 67 yards. The Mules, behind McGuire and Nafis Moore, exploded for a 30-13 run through the second quarter that would have KO’d most teams but the Bears regrouped at halftime to outscore Solanco 26-7 after intermission. E-town needed that big second half thanks to McGuire and Moore’s second quarter. The pair
posted matching two touchdown efforts in the frame, turning a tight 7-6 game into what appeared to be a cakewalk at 37-19. Livingston accounted for both of the Elizabethtown scores in the second quarter. The first was the first of his three receiving TDs and covered 35 yards, countering Moore’s first score of the frame. Livingston’s second TD of the second quarter came on the ground with the senior back covering 65 yards, this time countering McGuire’s first score of the second stanza. Livingston’s second quarter magic ran out as Solanco extended their lead with McGuire’s two-yard plunge and Moore’s 18-yard scamper coupled with a safety when Patrick was dropped in his own end zone. Elizabethtown made the first move of their comeback with a third quarter strike from Patrick to Luke Pierson (four catches and 110 yards) that covered 70 yards and made it 37-25. Livingston, who finished with 187 yards of offense, snagged his second receiving TD of the game to open the fourth quarter scoring, trimming the Solanco lead down to five points in the process. McGuire appeared to deliver a dagger to the E-town comeback bid when he broke off a 60-yard score to push the Mule lead back to 12 points with time winding down. Elizabethtown dodged
that dagger and kept their comeback on track with a three-yard Patrick scamper that setup the final theatrics and the one-point victory. FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team suffered three setbacks last week, the first of which was a 15-0 loss to Donegal on Tuesday the 25th. Mackenzie Allessie did the bulk of the lifting for the Indians, netting eight goals and dishing out one assist. Lily Saunders added four scores and two assists in the Donegal onslaught that forced Mackenzie Atticks into a 17 save game. Elizabethtown faced another lopsided result two days later, a 5-1 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg. The Pioneers racked up a 17-5 edge in shots and an 11-1 edge in corner attempts leading to a three-goal game for Chloe Blantz. Atticks (seven saves) and Alaina Telenko (four saves) received help in their attempts to keep L-S at bay with defensive saves from Haley Hoffman and Makenna Heisey. Jessica Zimmerman picked up the lone E-town goal, redirecting a Liz Ortiz pass into the cage early in the opening half. The Lady Bears hit the road for game number three of the week, traveling to Lititz where they suffered a 50 loss at the hands of the Lady Warriors. Meghan Quinn paced the Warwick attack with two scores while

Reflections on Our Holy Holidays
I was always fascinated by the relationship between our (Hebrew) people and the eternal Creator of heaven and earth. When we as a people were obedient to our Creator’s mandates for our lives everything went well. Whenever we decided to go our own way we suffered tribulation. It seemed that we as His chosen people were always screwing up. I realize that it is because of the love of the Lord, shown to us since we were separated as a people, that the nations of the world in their jealousy persecuted us. I have made an exhaustive study of the Feast days in an effort to find our creator’s heart toward us. You must read this book. It examines the Levitical feasts and the effect our Creator intended them to have on ancient Israel, and the effect He wanted them to have on us, and all the world. It is my prayer that a better understanding of these feasts will increase your appreciation of our creator’s glorious salvation for our people and all mankind. Anyone can download a free copy of the book Reflections on Our Holy Holidays by Lloyd Elias Scalyer. You may choose a pdf file, an ePUB file compatible with most eBook readers, or both. Instructions to do this are as follows: Go to the homepage of the website for Lititz Institute, www.lititzinstitute.org. On the homepage there is a rotating picture at the top of the page. Jazmine Garcia accounted for half of the six scores with two coming during E-town’s four goal first half. Kaelynn Sheetz tacked on two scores with Carly Sedun picking up the final tally. Aivery Shuck dished out four assists while Kaitlyn Snyder faced no shots for the easy win. The Bears opened the week with a 1-0 loss to Manheim Central on Monday while absorbing a 4-1 loss to Mechanicsburg on Tuesday. Sheetz, with help from Olivia Anson, accounted for the lone goal against Mechanicsburg while Snyder tallied a combined 15 saves in the two games. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team was able to navigate their three-game slate last week without suffering a loss,
unfortunately the Bears managed just one win in those three games after playing both Manheim Central and McCaskey to scoreless ties. E-town finally broke through on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Cedar Cliff. Caleb Gerber, with help from Giani Leppler, netted the game’s lone goal in the 67th minute. The goal not only secured the win it also snapped Elizabethtown’s scoring drought that covered two plus games. Brecken Musser finished his stellar week with his second zero save game. His first came in Thursday’s tie opposite McCaskey with the senior keeper turning away three shots in Monday’s tie with Central. VOLLEYBALL The girls’ volleyball team suffered their first Section Two loss on September 25th, falling to Garden Spot 3-0. “Credit to Garden Spot, they’re a great team,” said head coach Jenna Greist. The Lady Bears dropped the opening game 25-15 but kept things closer from there with matching 25-23 finals in games two and three. “I’m proud of the fact that our team was able to refocus after set one,” said Griest. “We settled down in serve receive, got our offense going and played great defense the rest of the match. Chargers from pg 15 With the set count even at 2-2, the teams headed into the final set. “Our girls were definitely discouraged to lose the middle sets, but they came out in the fifth set with sheer determination,” acknowledged Ferrari. “They were ready to defend and once they caught fire they didn’t let up. It was a well-fought game by both teams and we are grateful to have come out on top.”

Three of the four saw their season come to a close but Alex Williams did well enough to qualify for the District 3 Championship on October 5th and 6th. Williams carded an 87 that was 17 over par but was good enough for 21st place and a spot in the distinct field. Connor Krisko nearly joined Williams, his round of 89 placing him 29th on the day and just one shot off the district cutline. Eric Gilbert finished 35th with his round of 91. Jolene Markley was the lone representative for the Lady Bears, finishing 14th in the girl’s field. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team picked up their third win of the season with a victory over McCaskey on September 27th. The 6-0 win snapped a seven-game
