Hart To Deliver Peace Fellow Lecture Drew Hart, a professor of theology at Messiah College, has been named the 2019 Elizabethtown College Peace Fellow. Each fall, Elizabethtown College selects a Peace Fellow to host for a several-day residency that includes a lecture and other events. On Wednesday, Oct. 23, Hart will present his lecture, “Putting on Our Blue Jeans: White Supremacy, Christianity, and the Work of Racial Justice,” at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren (COB), 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown. The presentation is free and open to the public. In addition to teaching at Messiah, Hart has 10 years of pastoral experience and provides anti-racism talks and workshops across the country. He published the book “Trouble I’ve Seen: Changing the Way the Church Views Racism” in 2016, offering readers an analysis of racial injustice in the 21st century and a call to action and practical
framework for Christians committed to racial justice. Hart received the Brethren Community Ministries’ 2017 Peacemaker Award in recognition of his commitment and work for justice. Retired Elizabethtown COB pastor Ralph Detrick, who serves on the board of the Elizabethtown College Peace Fellowship (ECPF), said that the group has been selecting a Peace Fellow each year since 2006. Detrick said that both men and women have been selected for the honor, but Hart is the first African American and person of color to be named to the role. “We always try to have speakers that have universal themes that apply to a variety of times,” noted Detrick. The board members have historically alternated between selecting academicians and practitioners as Peace Fellows. “Drew Hart does both. He is the best of both worlds,” Detrick stated. The ECPF is an organization of Elizabethtown College alumni, current and former faculty and staff members, and

According to the Blood, Sweat, and Tears 5-Miler website, the event has donated more than $23,000 to the Emily Whitehead Foundation over the last three years. In 2012, Emily became the first child in history to be treated for her cancer using her own reengineered T cells. After relapsing from her bout with leukemia, Emily entered a clinical trial at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where she underwent this radical new therapy. She almost died and was on life support for two weeks and in a coma, but the doctors at CHOP fought to keep her alive while they addressed the side effects from this new treatment. Emily fought hard too and awoke from her coma on her seventh birthday. Detailed medical tests revealed she was cancer-free. Seven years later, Emily’s story continues to inspire people as doctors and researchers have built on Emily’s case, and now the same treatment is being used to save the lives of many

Willis Boyles has loved Halloween ever since he was a child. For the past three years, he has created a haunted house in his backyard for neighbors, in addition to decorating his house to the hilt. More than 1,000 people have attended the backyard event. “This time of year if people ask where I live, all I have to say is the house on Market Street with all the Halloween decorations, and they know exactly what I’m talking about,” said Willis’ wife, Nikki Boyles. This year, Willis has teamed up with Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA) to make an even bigger and better haunted attraction for the community. Haunted Marietta will be set up at the Union Meeting House, 82 N. Waterford Ave., Marietta, for individuals to experience. The haunted house will be open on Fridays, Oct. 18 and 25, and Saturdays, Oct. 19 and 26. The fullfledged scary option will run from 7 to 9 p.m, and a familyfriendly version will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. “It’s important for me to let the kids come through and know that Halloween is all in fun - we’re just people in costumes,” said Willis. There is no charge for Haunted Marietta; however, donations
will be accepted to support the efforts of MRA. Since 1965, MRA has been working to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of Marietta. When Willis reached out to MRA past president Rebecca Carroll Baltozer saying that he wanted to bring a Halloween event back to Marietta, she was immediately on board. Baltozer approached the board of MRA with the idea of hosting Willis and Nikki’s haunted house at the Union Meeting House. The vote was unanimously in favor of the idea. Willis began constructing the haunt at the beginning of September. Using the Union Meeting House gave him the opportunity to work indoors, create a unique layout, and expand his creativity. Every year, Willis travels to a Halloween convention to learn about special effects and to purchase the latest and greatest props for his endeavors. His family and friends have dressed up in costume for the backyard event and will be doing so again for Haunted Marietta. His daughters, who are 9 and 11, both help out - and have even opted out of trick-or-treating some years in favor of assisting with the backyard event instead. Nikki said that every year it seems like more homes are taking their Halloween decorations

Program Focuses On TCKs At Juniper Village of Mount Joy, residents gathered together to learn about the life of a third culture kid (TCK). By definition, TCKs are “people raised in a culture other than their parents’ or the country named on their passport for a significant part of their developmental years.” This term was first coined by researchers John and Ruth Useem in the 1950s, who used it to describe the children of American citizens who were living or working abroad. Grace Barton, one of Juniper Village’s Connections Associates, who is a TCK, led the discussion and shared her own experiences of having grown up as a child of missionaries in Honduras, Central America, until the age of 14, and then in Peru, South America, at the age of 17 and 19. On display for this discussion group were various souvenirs and items depicting some of the cultural arts and crafts from Central America. During this event, residents also shared their individual
definitions of culture, particularly American and local culture as well as some of their own individual customs, traditions, arts, and music from their own life experiences.
Juniper Village at Mount Joy is located at 607 Hearthstone Lane, Mount Joy. For more information, readers may call 717-272-8782 or visit www.junipercommunities.com.

The phrase ‘backing into the playoffs’ could easily be described as a backhanded compliment, after all it is typically used when a team carries a losing streak into the postseason. With that in mind, it is a phrase you never want to hear about your favorite sports team as they prepare for a postseason journey. Unfortunately, that would best describe the current state of the Elizabethtown boys’ soccer team. The Bears did qualify for the District 34A playoffs but did so as the 14th seed thanks to losses to LampeterPhoto by Cheri Sine Strasburg and Manheim Hayden Musser heads the ball for the Bears Central that also shufduring their 1-0, Section Two loss to fled E-town out of the Lampeter-Strasburg last Monday in E-town. The Bears came into the final week of the regular season clinging to Section Two’s second L-L berth but a 10 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on October 7th vaulted L-S over the Bears and into that second spot. Thursday’s 10 overtime loss to Central cemented the Pioneers place in the L-L playoffs while giving E-town a 12-day break before their D3-4A opener. JJ Oberholtzer tallied eight total saves between the two losses that left Elizabethtown with an 8-7-1 overall record and a 5-4-1 mark in league action. CROSS COUNTRY The sport of high school cross country can be incredibly frustrating. Take, for example, the E-town Lady Bears and their October 8th home meet with Lebanon and Cedar Crest. Despite occupying nearly half of the spots in top 10 the Lady Bears still fell to the visiting Lady Falcons by a 27-29 final. Elizabethtown did mange to top Lebanon 15-55 but that provided little relief from the sting of the Cedar Crest loss. Katie Locker dropped her first race of the 2019 regular season, finishing second to Crest’s Gwyneth Young and her 18:36 with a time of 19:30. Sierra Kapcsos crossed the finish line 31 seconds after Locker and in fourth place. Madeline Quinn took fifth with a time of 20:30 with Olivia Shenk slotting in seventh with her time of 21:06. Katie Hook was the lone Lady Bear scorer to finish outside the top 10 but just barely, finishing 11th with a time of 22:46. The boy’s team finished the day with he same 1-1 mark thanks to a 27-28 win over Lebanon and a 17-50 loss to Cedar Crest. Jesse Myers nabbed the lone top 10 finish for the Bears, taking fourth with a time of 16:51. Alex Hartman was the next E-town runner to finish, just missing the top 10 with an 11th place time of 17:19. Nathan Johnson (15th 17:40) and Garrick English (17th - 17:56) finished 16 seconds and two places apart while Dustin Sauder rounded out the top five with a 24th place run of 19:02. inched closer to locking up two different postseason berths with a perfect 3-0 week. The wins over Penn Manor, Lampeter-Strasburg and Lebanon have Elizabethtown at 9-1 in L-L play and firmly in the L-L field while their 11-2 overall mark has the Lady Bears sixth in D3-4A rankings, securely inside the 16 team 4A playoff field. Elizabethtown kicked off their perfect week with a 3-1 win over Penn Manor on the 7th. The Lady Comets landed the first blow by taking the opening game 28-26 but the Lady Bears rebounded with a 25-21 game two win. E-town found their grove in games three and four leading to 25-13 and 25-14 finals and the team victory. Ashley NyeSmith led the way with 15 digs and six aces while Hayden Calaman tallied 28 assists. Nine kills from Sydney Stewart and four Kallee Locker blocks rounded out E-town’s team leaders for the day. The Lady Bears had little trouble with Lampeter-Strasburg one day later, sweeping the Lady Pioneers 25-12, 25-15 and 25-11. Calaman tallied 31 assists in this victory while NyeSmith finished with nine digs and five aces. Locker finished with a team high 13 kills while Stewart matched NyeSmith’s nine digs. Krimson Dougherty posted one block. Elizabethtown’s final win of the week came on Thursday with another 3-0 final, this one over Lebanon. The Lady Bears used 11 kills and eight digs from Stewart coupled with 25 Calaman assists to post wins of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-18. NyeSmith added three aces and Dougherty two blocks in the win. FOOTBALL One week after enjoying the sweetness of victory, courtesy of a 27-19 triumph over Garden Spot, the E-town gridiron gang found themselves back on the wrong side of a final. This time it was Penn Manor inflicting the damage for Elizabethtown’s fifth loss of the season, a 37-6 final on October 11th. The Comets combined a stifling defensive effort with their Luke Braas

Murr snagged all three of Braas’ TD passes and added one from Aaron Gale to finish with 163 yards and four scores on just five catches. For Elizabethtown, Rice added 14 yards rushing and 14 yards receiving to his kickoff return score but it was Cole Hitz who finished as E-town’s offensive leader. The senior finished with 42 total yards that was split evenly between rushing and receiving. Riley Drager nearly matched Hitz with 20 yards rushing on six carries. Calvary Booters Earn CCAC Playoff Berth by Leah Sintic
Never quite seeming to escape a plague of injuries, the Mount Calvary girls soccer team managed to pull through their final week of the regular season, a two-game effort with spilt results. They finish with an over-
all record of 9-5-1, earning them a playoff berth in the CCAC playoffs to commence this week. Forced to shuffle positions, just trying to field a complete team, and again playing without substitutions, the squad succumbed to a 2-1 loss to Lebanon Catholic last Thursday.

The Chargers’ Elena Hatfield drives past Lancaster County Christian’s Anna Heck during Mt. Calvary’s 3-1, CCAC win over the host Lions last Tuesday.
Despite the frustration of not being able to play at full strength, fielding only 10 positions, the squad saw the event as yet another opportunity to encourage each other, stretch their abilities, and play with integrity. “Playing down has forced the girls to step up and become stronger players,” explained head coach Kim Schmitkons. Lebanon was able to find the cracks, and got control of the game with two goals, but the Chargers were able to earn one back with a successful PK taken by Naomi Ewing. The evening also signified the Lady Chargers senior night, taking a moment to honor the contributions from two vital MC athletes, Taegan Akers and Ewing. “Taegan is extremely dedicated and hardworking, willing to do whatever the team needs,” commended Schmitkons. “Her teammates and coaches can rely on her giving 100 percent in every practice and game.” Schmitkons went on to describe Akers as an individual that God has gifted with a “spirit of power, love, and selfdiscipline,” referencing 2 Timothy 1:7. “Naomi has been a leader on our team. Her tenacious play and remarkable precision with the ball have been crucial,” Schmitkons said of her other senior. “We can always count on Naomi to fight to the end of every game, and she is quick to offer teammates words of encouragement, keeping our focus on glorifying God through our play.” Schmitkons also had a verse for Ewing, pointing out 1 Peter 5:6-7, and describing Ewing as someone whose “consistent humility God will use and reward as she continues to rely on Him.” The previous Tuesday, the Lady Chargers efforts were rewarded in the form of a 3-1 win over Lancaster County Christian. Olivia Yordy displayed her skills on both ends of the field. While playing a defensive back position, Yordy managed to have a major role in all three Mount Calvary goals, finishing the contest with two goals and one assist. The first Charger goal came off a cross from deep in the right corner from Yordy, finding Ewing at the top of the six, and Ewing redirected the ball into the LCCS netting. Trading roles later in the first half, Ewing launched a cross from the left side, and Yordy put the finishing touch on it to go up 2-0. Just before the half, the Lions retaliated with a successful attack of their own, powering the ball past the Charger defenders to slice the lead in half 2-1. With only ten minutes remaining in the game, Yordy created space just beyond half field, and powered a rocket of a shot from well outside the 18, to notch her second goal of the day and seal the 3-1 outcome. BOYS’ SOCCER Wrapping up their regular season with a pair of league wins was certainly a highlight for the Charger boys’ team, taking down High Point Baptist and Conestoga Christian at home last week, and boosting their overall record to 12-4. The sports week ended on Thursday night with the Chargers blanking High Point, 2-0. Being senior night for the squad, it was fitting that the opening goal resulted from two seniors working in
tandem to create a good look at the Eagle goal just 12 minutes into the contest. Isaac Grab dished the assist, finding Sam Robinson to finish the play, and put the Chargers on the board, 1-0. Just two minutes later, the team converted a corner kick for goal number two. Rutt took the corner and place the ball perfectly into the box, finding Hansen Crick who ran in for a flying header and the second goal of the night. MC defense kept the Eagles out of range for most of the night, but the few times they were able to break through for a shot, keeper Regan Mummau was there to scoop up three saves. Grab, Robinson, Dakota Lamb, Jonah Rutt, Harrison Crick, and Hansen Crick are the six seniors the team will be losing at the end of this season, and head coach Marc Myers took a moment to point out the different skill set each one has brought to the team dynamic. “Isaac is new to MC this year, but has been a great addition to the team. His skill and athleticism rival any player on our team, but him being part of this team means more than anything else,” Myers said of Grab. “Since he was a freshman, Sam [Robinson] has been a voice of encouragement on this team. He has played many different positions and is always there to help wherever he can. “Dakota [Lamb] has always been dedicated to this team. He is a quiet leader and has never lacked determination or hard work. “Jonah [Rutt] has worked hard to improve every year. His goal against CSY this year has to be a highlight. I’m so glad Jonah was a part of MC soccer,” Myers added of the four-year athlete. “Harrison has always shown so much heart. He inspires his teammates and flat-out tells you to ‘give more’ when momentum is shifting.” “Hansen is one of the highest skilled players on the team, and he athletically can match anyone on the field,” Myers explained of the

four-year starter. “Injury has kept him from playing time, but more importantly he has always been there to support his teammates.” The squad wasted no time in opening an early lead over Conestoga Christian in last Tuesday’s 3-0 triumph. Grab notched the first goal after only 80 seconds on the field, Hansen Crick added a tally of his own after 18 minutes, and freshman Brett Taylor knocked in the third goal with nine minutes remaining in the contest. Lead scorer D. Rutt took on a supporting role in the contest,
assisting all three Charger offensive successes. While most of the action took place on the other end of the field, Mummau scooped up five saves in the shutout. VOLLEYBALL On the brink of post-season playoffs, the team preps for an exciting post-season, and also took a moment last week to focus on the contributions made by their four graduating seniors, whose leadership and skills, both on and off court, will be See Calvary pg 12

Company Installs Furnaces For “Feel The Love” Program HB McClure Company’s Helping Hands committee has announced the recipients of new home heating equipment via the Feel the Love program. The program is offered by Lennox Industries and is a joint effort between Lennox and its dealers to donate home heating and cooling systems to neighbors in need. Feel the Love is a community-centric
program that engages brands like HB McClure to give back to those in need, particularly as the winter months approach. HB McClure’s recipients were chosen through a nomination system based on criteria from Lennox and promotion by HB McClure. Nominees were asked to provide a brief explanation of why they were in need of a new
furnace or HVAC system. HB McClure’s installations were scheduled to take place on Oct. 4 for Edward Kyle of Mechanicsburg and Gloria Knaub of Elizabethtown. The installations were for a gas furnace with add-on AC and the replacement of an existing oil furnace. Together, the value of these jobs equals approximately $10,000 with all parts
and labor donated by Lennox and HB McClure. Through Feel the Love (formerly called Heat U.P.), Lennox dealers, like HB McClure, have installed more than 1,000 highefficiency furnaces and contributed more than $4 million in support of their local communities. DAR Grant Supports Mansion Renovation With the support of the Donegal Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), DAR approved a Special Project Grant to restore the main visitor door entrance of the Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) was awarded $2,469 on Oct. 8, 2018, for the project, which included the installation of a stone threshold. The mansion’s six-panel Cross and Bible door was renovated with its original strap hinges and forged iron door lock with an elbow lever latch. DAR was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for the nation’s children. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. DAR has more than 185,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide. Jacob was a member of the Committee of Observation from Rapho Township, which existed as a part of the preliminary political and military activity in Lancaster County at the beginning of the American Revolution.
John served in the 3rd and 7th Battalions in the Lancaster County Militia. The Haldeman Mansion and its Locust Grove property are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is known for its Native American, Colonial, Early American, and
