dren’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where she underwent this radical new therapy. She almost died and was on life support for two weeks and in a coma, but the doctors at CHOP fought to keep her alive while they addressed the side effects from this new treatment. Emily fought hard too and awoke from her coma on her seventh birthday. Detailed medical tests revealed she was cancer-free. Six years later, Emily’s story continues to inspire people as doctors and researchers have built on Emily’s case and now the same treatment is being used to save the lives of many children and adults. The Food and Drug Administration gave its approval to the new treatment in the summer of 2017 so that it could go nationwide and help save the lives of more children. Since then, it has been used internationally. Today, Emily is a healthy and cancer-free

13-year-old. Her family established the Emily Whitehead Foundation in order to help fund more innovative treatments in fighting childhood cancer. Emily has made appearances on various news shows and has had the chance to meet numerous celebrities and government leaders, including visiting the White House in 2016 to meet President Barack Obama. In addition to supporting the Emily Whitehead Foundation, the Blood, Sweat, and Tears 5-Miler will also benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Central Pennsylvania, which has a long history of funding successful treatments for pediatric cancer - including being a major force in the field of immunotherapy. Proceeds will go toward the costs of lighting the new space and the implementation of art education programs for children, teenagers, and adults. Howey

said that the Oct. 20 event will kick of the fundraising campaign for the Marietta Center for the Arts building, and the organization has set a goal of raising $100,000 by the end of 2019. Individuals interested in contributing toward the campaign may donate at www.givegab.com/ campaigns/light-the-stage. Howey explained that SSC, which has outgrown its current space in the building at the rear of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta, will continue to create unique theater experiences at the Marietta Center for the Arts, as well as at the Historic Marietta Theater, 130

W. Market St., which was acquired by the group in May. The Eater Family Foundation, a charitable trust established in honor of Gene Eater Herchelroth, presented a grant to SSC that will be used to help turn the Historic Marietta Theater into a state-of-theart facility for cinema, stage, and community gatherings. Howey said there is a five- to six-year timeline projected for the restoration of the Historic Marietta Theater. “Our major renovations (in the Marietta Center for the Arts) include building out our main stage theater space with a stage, lighting grid, orchestra pit, light and sound booth, and more,” Howey explained. Those renovations are scheduled to begin in 2019. Drawings of the new main stage theater will be unveiled

at the Oct. 20 event. The first-floor offers two performance spaces, and the Gallery Stage will be used as a more intimate setting for plays, children’s shows, open mic nights, and more. That area will also be available for community members to rent for private events. The main stage theater will be named the Eater Theater in honor of the Eater Family Foundation and will house larger audiences and productions. While the Gallery Stage will be ready for an SSC production in February 2019, Howey said the anticipated opening of the Eater Theater will be in July 2019. The downstairs portion of the building will offer space for costume storage, a sewing room, fitting rooms, and a prop area, as well as an area for art education classes.

Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) invites community members to take part in the 11th annual Craig Heisey Memorial 5K at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Donegal High School (DHS), 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. The 10th annual Victoria Heisey Fun Run for children will begin after the 5K is finished. The events are named in memory of Craig Heisey and his niece, Victoria Heisey. Craig, the husband of Linda Heisey and father of Chris, Katie, Jessica, and Jon, was an active member of Mount Joy Mennonite Church and a top salesman at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. He passed away in 2007 after a battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease along with complications of Lyme disease. Victoria, the daughter of Jim and Gloria Heisey of Manheim and the sister of Valerie, was a 2008 Lancaster Mennonite High School graduate, an active member of Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, and a Lock Haven University student studying biology. She died in 2008 due to complications from acute myeloid leukemia. REYS office manager Harrison Burch explained that the purpose of the race is multifaceted, as family, friends, and community members gather to remember and honor the lives of Craig and Victoria, as well as to have a good time and raise funds for

REYS. “Last year’s race went really well. Since it’s in the morning and later into the fall, it’s not beastly hot out but it’s not freezing either, so it’s good running weather,” said Burch. Online registration is available at https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Mount Joy/CraigHeiseyMemorial5K, and individuals who register by Friday, Oct. 19, will be guaranteed to receive a long-sleeve tech race t-shirt. Online registration will remain open through Wednesday, Oct. 31, and race-day registration will open at 7 a.m. The start and finish lines for the race will be located near the high school track. The course goes in a large loop past DHS and Donegal Primary School before turning right, passing a golf course, and crossing a bridge. “It’s a really nice course, and you get to see a variety of stuff as you run,” noted Burch. The race is chip-timed and will be held rain or shine. Free beverages and snacks will be available at the finish line for participants and spectators. Parking will be available in both the DHS and Donegal Junior High School lots. Cash prizes will be given to the top overall male and female finishers. Awards will also be distributed to the top two finishers in various age brackets. Children age 10 and under are invited to run in the Victoria Heisey Fun Run, which will

The 22-33 win over the Lady Falcons coupled with a 25-32 win over Conestoga Valley capped E-town’s perfect 9-0 run through league play. Madeline Quinn, Cat Shontz and Katie Locker powered the final pair of victories by sweeping the top three spots. Calvary Girls Tally 14 Goals With 2 Wins, 1 Tie by Leah Sintic

There was no lack of scoring last week for the Lady Chargers, as they collectively netted 14 goals over the course of two shutout victories and one draw, and emerged from the week with an overall record of 11-3-1. Mustering up the endurance needed for a third straight day of competition, the Lady Chargers blanked Harrisburg Christian, 5-0, on Wednesday. “This week has been challenging in terms of game pace and being mentally prepared for the specific difficulties of each game, reflected head coach Kim Schmitkons. “With such a busy week and not having subs, we are trying to rotate players through positions and just take care of injuries as best we can. Five different Chargers supplied the tallies against Harrisburg Christian, with Olivia Yordy, Elena Hatfield, Gabby Frost, Brittney Taylor, and Julia Martin each getting in on the scoring action. Martin’s goal marked her 25th of her sophomore season. Tuesday’s home clash with Lancaster County Christian reached an impasse at 1-1, giving the Lady Chargers their only draw thus far on their record. Each team succeeded in notching a goal in the second half, but despite double overtime extensions neither club was able to repeat their success for the clincher. “In overtime, we played some of our best minutes as a team, acknowledged Schmitkons. “Everyone was working defensively and trying to push offensively together.

Unfortunately, we just couldn’t find the net again. On Monday, the Lady Chargers took down Christian School of York, 80, and again the MC offense displayed diversity, this time with seven Lady Chargers contributing to the goal count. Yordy put in two of the goals while Ambria Good, Naomi Ewing, Frost, Taylor, Martin and Hatfield were each responsible for one. “With playoffs less than a week away, I want the girls to really enjoy playing each game, keep striving for 80 minutes of intense play, and recognizing opportunities to support each other, concluded Schmitkons. In addition to the slew of contests, the squad took a moment to honor their three senior players, Leah Hawryluk, Ambria Good, and Brittney Taylor for their contributions both on and off the field. “My three seniors have very

different personalities that compliment each other. They are leading with words and actions not only on the field but in building team relationships and focusing us spiritually, explained Schmitkons. Hawryluk, the MC keeper, has spent a lot her time in goal, but has managed to gain enough field time to notch at least one goal on the offensive end each year of her varsity career. “Leah [Hawryluk] leads by example, and is always looking for a way to contribute to the team, pointed out Schmitkons. “On the field she demands focus and our best effort, but is also consistently encouraging her teammates’ efforts. When not playing soccer, Hawryluk is active on student council, is the senior class president and has been involved in multiple school drama productions. Hawryluk plans to attend Clarks Summit University to major in elementary education and Bible, with a minor in special education. “I would love to teach first grade or in a special education classroom, travel the world, and seek God in my daily life, explained Hawryluk of her future

aspirations. Ambria Good has been attending MCCS since her sophomore year, and reflects back on her deep relationships forged, specifically through her experience on the soccer team. “This team has been like a family to me ever since my first day at MCCS, and I couldn’t ask for a better one, Good explained while reminiscing on three “unforgettable seasons. Schmitkons describes Good as a servant leader, someone who is constantly watching out for the needs of others, and a quick learner. “She [Good] reads her teammates well and quietly comes alongside them to build them up, Schmitkons said of the defensive anchor. Good has also been involved in student council, media, National Honor Society, and plans to pursue accounting at Grove City College. Brittney Taylor has been attending Mount Calvary since she was in preschool, and is currently class vice president, a member of National Honor Society, praise team, and a teacher’s aide. She strongly desires to follow God’s guiding in her life and pursue elementary education. Taylor has been a part of the team

for each of the past three consecutive CCAC championship wins. “A favorite team memory is being a part of winning the league championship for the past three years-specifically last year when all our fans stormed the field, reflected Taylor. See Mt. Calvary pg 12

Junior Sam Robinson tucked in the lone Charger goal, his first of the season. The club will lose two seniors at the culmination of this season, Jesse Rutt and Ethan Niedwick. Rutt has attended MCCS since prek, has been a band member, and plans to study meteorology in college. “Jesse has grown every year as a soccer player, and this year has been no different,” noted Myers of the four-year forward. “He has always shown a servant attitude and understands how his role can help the team succeed.” Ethan Niedwick, the MC keeper, will also be leaving a lasting impact for his sacrificial actions and exemplary attitude on the field. “Ethan started goalkeeper his sophomore year when we needed to fill a void in that position,” explained Myers. “It is a big accomplishment to go from a novice to someone the team relies on to stay in the game. Ethan’s biggest strength is his attitude as he always put the team first,” continued Myers when describing Niedwick as a servant leader. Niedwick is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Charger baseball team. His post-graduation plans included Mechanical Engineering while participating in ROTC and serving in the US Army. GOLF Facing their final match of the

2018 season hosted by High Point Baptist Academy, the Charger golf club did not notch a victory in the trimatch but focused on ending strong and reflecting on their growth over the course of the year. Tuesday’s nine-hole showdown with High Point and Lancaster County Christian took the Chargers to French Creek Golf Club where High Point came out on top with a 189, followed by LCCS’ 217, and the MC club shooting a collective 260. Danny Smullen carded the best Charger score of the day with a 52. Tyler Masters and Hunter Stewart contributed 66 and 69 respectively, and David Ellis rounded out the top four with a 73. Scorecards can be deceiving, as they don’t always reflect the growth of an individual, a concept the Chargers have learned over the year. “The team has made improvements in consistent contact, playing out of the bunkers, and putting,” encouraged head coach Matt Owlett. And with even farther-reaching effects, the team’s character growth outweighs their golf statistics. “These young men showed tremendous perseverance even though this season was a struggle at times,” pointed out Owlett. “They never gave up and maintained great strength in the face of adversity. Even on the golf course they were able to model our team verse in Ephesians.” The verse reads, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10 ESV).

FREEDOM FROM VARICOSE VEINS

With two graduating seniors, David Ellis and Tyler Masters, the team will feel the loss of their leadership. “David Ellis has been a great addition to the golf team. He has been a great leader and sets a great example for others to follow,” described head coach Matt Owlett. Ellis had only recently picked up the sport, playing golf on the varsity squad his senior year, but adding much to the team dynamic. Ellis’ other extracurricular activities have included baseball, soccer, basketball, band, tech team, and class chaplain. After graduating, Ellis feels God’s call on his life to enter full-time ministry and will attend Lancaster Bible College to pursue Biblical Studies. Masters, the team’s other senior, will also leave a memorable imprint on the team. “Tyler always brings life and energy to the team. He adds a large element of fun, always brightens up practice, and has grown so much as a person,” elaborated Owlett. Masters has also been a part of media, student council, athletic council, soccer, basketball and baseball. When reflecting on golf memories, Masters and Ellis had many favorites to pick from, but the lasting impact of their coach was a standout for them both. Masters described Owlett as “a coach that I can look up to as a spiritual leader and advisor”, a sentiment echoed by Ellis.

one win and one loss. The Bears 10-5-2 record left them short of the L-L playoffs and unable to defend their two-time league champion status but they still have the district playoffs in their sights. E-town is currently the 14th ranked 4A school, making them part of the 16-team playoff field with a few days before the October 18th cutoff. Elizabethtown opened their final week with a 2-1 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg on October 8th. Fabian Beyer put the Bears up early with his score in the 14th minute. The Pioneers stunned Elizabethtown by netting the equalizer with four minutes remaining in regulation. E-town returned the favor by scoring the game winner in the 87th minute when Ignacio Bartolome found David Fry. Brecken Musser turned away four shots to preserve the win. The Bears season finale ended up a 1-0 loss to Manheim Central thanks to Carson Brenize’s early score. Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC) will host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. The menu will include spaghetti with meat sauce or plain sauce, salad, garlic bread, applesauce, homemade desserts, and beverages. The meal will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. or until the food is sold out. Separate prices for admission have been set for adults and for children ages 4 to 10. Children age 3 and under may eat for free. Takeout meals will also be available. Reservations are not required. According to organizers Chuck and Gail Ruhl, the event has gained a following over the years, with many return patrons. “We believe the secret to our success is in the sauce,” said Gail. “Since this fundraiser began, Curt Diffenderfer has been the head cook who continues to produce great sauce year after year. Some folks even ask to purchase quarts of sauce to take home and enjoy.” The Ruhls added that they believe many folks return to the annual event year after year not only for the delicious food, but because they enjoy the atmosphere. All of the funds raised at the dinner will

benefit the Ruhl’s UMC Mission Outreach Team and local, national, and global missions. “The vision for this event is to welcome the community into our church, which will give them the opportunity to speak with us personally about our mission outreaches both past and present,” Gail explained, noting that organizers hope those attending feel comfortable and relaxed and enjoy the fellowship of the meal and conversations. The Ruhl’s UMC Mission Outreach Team is still in the process of determining a destination for its mission trip in June 2019, but Gail said the hope is to have selected a location by the end of this year. Generally, approximately 20 to 25 people ranging from teenagers to adults participate in the annual summer service trips. Chuck and Gail expressed gratitude to the community for supporting the team’s past endeavors. “We greatly appreciate everyone’s generosity. Without everyone’s help, our mission team would not be able to serve communities in need after suffering a disaster such as a flood or hurricane,” stated Gail, adding that all monies raised help to provide materials for rebuilding and repairing homes. For more information on the dinner, readers may call 717-665-3400 or visit www.ruhlschurch.org.

Chicken And Pasta Meal Slated St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will serve a free chicken and pasta casserole dinner on Sunday, Oct. 21, from 4 to 5 p.m. In addition to chicken and pasta, the meal

will include a vegetable, bread and butter, dessert, and beverages. Although there is no cost for the dinner, reservations are requested. To make reservations, call the church office at 717-653-5493 by Thursday, Oct. 18.

Donegal Presbyterian To Host Celtic Evensong Service By Chelsea Peifer

Exploring and focusing on the Scotch-Irish and Celtic roots at Donegal Presbyterian Church will be one of the focuses of the congregation as it prepares for the 300th anniversary of the founding of the church in August 2021. As an advent to the various activities in the works for 2020 and 2021, the congregation will host a Celtic Evensong Service on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary at 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. Anyone is welcome to attend. Michael Wills, who is part of the Project 300, the committee of folks who are planning events to honor the grand anniversary, said that the idea for the Celtic or vespers song service had been on the table for quite a while. “It seemed appropriate to use this as a kickoff for the anniversary celebrations,” Wills remarked. The theme for the Oct. 21 service will be “Resting in the Arms of God.” Wills explained that the service is designed to help attendees to put aside the cares of the world and rest in the arms of God. Traditional Celtic music that features a harpist, along with Scripture readings and responsive prayer, will be used to center on the theme. Organizers hope to continue hosting a similarly styled service each quarter leading up to the anniversary. Pastor Matthew Randolph said that events are being planned for 2020 and 2021, including a Gaelic concert in April 2021, a formal birthday celebration in May 2021, and a Celtic festival in the fall of 2021.
